city plus As a student at City College, one of our main objectives is to prepare you for the world of work or higher level study. When you enrol with us, you will be joining a Programme of Study. As well as working towards achieving your main subject qualification, we aim to provide you with the skills that are essential for employment and for University. These skills are about being able to: • work in a team • solve problems • communicate effectively • understand how businesses work • manage your time effectively Your Programme of Study will be made up of: • Your main subject qualification or qualifications • City Plus which will develop your wider skills of employability, citizenship and intellectual and social development • Functional Skills or GCSE English or Maths if you have not yet achieved a Grade C in both subjects. Underpinning everything you do in your adult life are the skills involved in English and Maths. Employers and Universities recognise that having a GCSE Grade C or higher in English Language and Maths provides them with a strong indication of a basic level of ability that they are looking for. If you do not achieve a Grade C in Maths and English Language at school then at least half a day per week of your course will consist of an English or Maths class. If you are on a Level 1 course you will work towards a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in both English and in Maths. Level 1 students that have a D in either English Language or Maths will be given the opportunity to gain a Grade C. If you are on a Level 2/3 course you will work towards either a GCSE Maths or a GCSE English language qualification. 12
The English and Maths team offer Functional Skills qualifications as a ‘stepping stone’ towards GCSE in both English and Maths for those students with a GCSE grade E or below. Studying English and Maths is an integral part of your programme of study at the College. Our specialist English or Maths lecturers will work with you to identify which is the best qualification, subject and level for you, based on your previous study and the relevance to your vocational course. We will also provide specialist additional support, both in and outside the lesson, to those of you who need some extra help. If you are exempt from this part of the programme of study you will be required to be involved in the other ‘Getting Involved’ activities outlined below. You will need to provide evidence of all GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications attained prior to starting at City College, no matter what the grade or level.
City Plus
This programme is about making sure you get the most out of your time at City College and that you have the best opportunities for future employment or study. Getting Involved: Student Voice - represent your fellow student’s views on College and course matters at Student Council meetings. There are also opportunities for you to meet with the Principal on a monthly basis as well as attend College Corporation meetings. By doing this you will be influencing College decisions at the highest levels. Citizenship - are you interested in fund raising or getting involved with supporting your local community? We will help you to find and participate in local, national or international projects.
Progression Support: UCAS Support: If you are thinking about going to university, this programme will make sure you have the information you need to choose the right place to study, successfully apply and be prepared for interviews. We will also provide you will information and advice about Higher Education funding applications. Employment Support: We want to make sure you have the best chances of finding your dream job when you leave us. This programme will help you create a first class CV, research the careers you are interested in, apply for jobs and help you prepare for interviews. Our great links with local employers will ensure we provide you with the latest advice about what skills they are looking for and what jobs are available.
Entrepreneur - are you a budding Entrepreneur? Why not get involved in our Young Start Up Talent programme. We will support you to find and develop your ideas, seek investment and will give you opportunities to sell. You will have access to a wealth of advice from experienced professionals, including our Entrepreneur in Residence - a successful local Entrepreneur who is in College at least once a week to support our students. Sports & Fitness - Our students successfully play in football, netball, mixed and mens hockey and girls football leagues. We also offer our students many other sports and fitness activities such as badminton, keep fit and aerobics classes. Activities - You can also get involved in a range of fun activities such as Paintballing, Lazer Quest, trips to theme parks, theatres and shows.

btec advanced vocational studies A 2-year programme equivalent to 3 A-levels Explore 3 subjects over 2 years For those of you who are looking to study at Level 3 and would rather generalise than specialise at this stage then we have a fantastic provision that will do just that. In this programme you will be able to select three subjects from the 14 on offer - finishing the first year with three BTEC Level 3 National Certificates (equivalent to three AS Levels) and the second year with three BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas (equivalent to 3 A-levels). These qualifications will give you a wide variety of skills and experiences that will really impress both employers and Universities - the perfect vocational solution. Students who gain a BTEC Level 3 National qualification will earn UCAS points at the same time. UCAS points count towards entry on to a higher education / degree course in the UK. What’s Next

applied science Do you want to gain the skills and knowledge to work within the Science sector? This course, taught by industry experienced tutors at our Central campus, will provide you with an overview of the science industry, especially the work of the forensic analyst. The course is traditionally weighted towards science but also includes police investigations and psychology, providing the academic and practical skills for a role in the science and forensic science industry. You will study areas including forensic photography, evidence collection, criminal investigation procedures, forensic psychology, genetics and physiology of the human body. The College has excellent laboratories including access to category II containment facility and state-of-the-art industry equipment including a gas chromatography unit. The course also provides you with opportunities to hear from guest industry speakers and visit a micro brewery and pathology laboratory.

We work closely with employers and advertise their vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Vacancy Service and have a high street presence through our City Skills & Jobs Shop. Why should I take an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are a fantastic way of learning on the job. While taking an Apprenticeship, you will be working for a real company in a real job. You will gain the skills, knowledge and experience of your chosen industry. You will also work towards either an NVQ or another nationally recognised qualification. Flexible training As an employee, you will be in active employment for most of your time as most training takes place on the job. The rest of your training will take place at City College - usually once or twice a week. There are many different Apprenticeships you can take not just the traditional routes that you might imagine. An Apprenticeship is a valued and recognised qualification for many industries.

Art & Design Art and Design courses are taught in our vibrant Visual Arts department at the College’s Central Campus. The courses are fast-paced, exciting and varied and have been graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. The assignments will allow you to develop skills and knowledge in a variety of 2D and 3D art and design contexts such as in drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D design and craft, graphics, textiles and fashion. You will develop visual and conceptual awareness while developing research and evaluation skills and strong critical judgement. The department stages spectacular fashion shows involving cross-course student collaboration. carpentry & joinery Carpentry is a rewarding, challenging and creative career. There is a great sense of satisfaction to be gained that you can create something that is long-lasting and is a testament of your skill and talent. The aim of Carpentry courses at City College is to provide you with the skills, underpinning knowledge and a broad understanding of the diversity of the Construction industry. You’ll explore the roles and responsibilities of the people who work in the industry and the possible career progression routes. These courses are designed to develop your practical skills, knowledge and understanding of Site Carpentry or Bench joinery and the construction industry in general. The courses will provide you with the knowledge and skills to confidently apply for work within the construction industry and you will also get the opportunity to get hands-on experience in real-life projects such as the Waste House project at Brighton University and the Stable Yard project at Brighton Racecourse. department offers a range of practical catering courses that have been specially designed to prepare you for a successful career in this challenging but rewarding sector. Our Catering department, based at our Central Campus, benefits from modern facilities such as industry standard training kitchens and our training restaurant ‘The Gallery’. This is open to the public providing a top of the range dining experience. We also have excellent links with famous venues including The Gingerman, Seattle Hotel and Hotel du Vin, which accept a number of students on Apprenticeships and work experience every year. You will learn principles and then advanced techniques that will prepare you for your career. Depending on the path you choose, these can include safety and hygiene, table service, nutrition, cooking techniques, costing and creating a menu. If you progress with us through to Level 3, you will be able to develop your supervisory and management skills and can choose to focus on event management too if you wish. Catering - Foundation Level Offers the possibility of a 2 year catering programme at E3 and L1. Smaller classes with TSA support for those interested in catering but needing initial support with confidence and skills. Opportunities for an exciting and varied programme that may include a catering experience in France and the chance of a real work situation in the College cafe. All learners will be interviewed and assessed for suitability for this course.

This could include nurseries, children’s centres or pre-schools. Depending on the level you are studying, you will learn about food and nutrition, child development, caring for children, working with parents, communication skills and emotional and social development. Our high-quality, vocational, early years training will give you the skills to have a significant impact on the development of children and the Childcare department at our East Campus is highly respected within the industry. All our childcare lecturing team have worked in the industry so that they can also provide students will real life experience and training. 60% of the course is theory and class room based and 40% is practical in a nursery setting.

electrical Are you interested in being part of the exciting and growing electrical industry? The UK construction industry is a major employer and if you enrol onto our courses you could be a part of it. You will gain technical skills and knowledge to secure employment within the electrical industry. Our courses will allow you to complete the theory units of the full diplomas you need to be fully qualified (employment within the electrical industry is essential to becoming fully qualified). You will be taught by qualified electricians who have a wealth of industry experience and you will have access to up to date workshop facilities. Depending on what level of training or education you are currently at, you will develop skills and experience in working safely in an engineering environment, forming and assembly of cable containment, wiring and testing electrical equipment, maintaining electrical systems and assembling electronic circuits. Usually, our students progress from our full-time courses onto apprenticeships in Electrical Installations.

The Film, TV and Video industry offers many exciting opportunities including

camera operation, sound operation, editing and script writing. Gaining skills in filming, editing and screening films in the digital format, our Filmmaking courses at our East Campus prepare you for further training and employment in an expanding industry. We prepare our students so well that many move straight into the industry or towards the top university courses for film - for example Ravensbourne College, Bournemouth Institute and the University of Sussex. You will have the opportunity to work in all areas of a Production team and develop your understanding of the TV and film industries. You will also develop your creative filmmaking skills using the latest production equipment, including Sony NX5 HD cameras and Mac editing suites running industry standard Adobe Premiere (CS6). Throughout the course you will work with real-life clients, covering and broadcasting live events and creating promotional videos. Foundation Learning If you are unsure of what subject to study or need some support with college or study confidence, have been home educated or not gained qualifications, our Vocational Studies Level 1 and 2 courses can give you a stepping stone to progression. Vocational Studies offers the chance to study in smaller classes with specialist teaching staff and TSA support in every class. This gives you an opportunity to improve on your study skills and build confidence for the next step. multi-trades Someone skilled in multi-trades will have lots of different opportunities within the construction industry. You will train across brickwork, painting and decorating, plastering and tiling. With job opportunities and apprenticeships open to City College leavers, a Multi-Trades Diploma will provide you with an excellent chance of entering employment after college. Multi-trades students are based at our East Campus in a specialist construction centre where you will find industry standard facilities. You’ll gain practical skills and technical knowledge which will enable you to build and make things you’ll be proud of while working alongside other student groups training in related fields for a multi-discipled approach - replicating a construction site. You will train in safe working practices, building methods and construction technology, masonry repairs, decorative and plastering repairs, plumbing and wood amongst much more. taught in our vibrant Visual Arts department at the College’s Central Campus in the North Laines. The Photography courses provide you with a broad and challenging programme of study and have been graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. You will develop technical skills and ability to create an exciting photographic portfolio. Using fast past live industry standard briefs, you will also develop visual and conceptual awareness, skills of investigation and idea generation, research analysis, evaluation and critical judgement. You will be working in well-equipped photographic studios, editing suites and darkrooms with a dedicated teaching team that have a wide range of professional expertise, skills and industry experience as practising photographers. Your tutors will encourage a strong work ethic, enabling you to be self-motivated and well-prepared for working in the creative industries.

plumbing The Plumbing industry continues to grow and is very competitive. Therefore our courses have been designed to give you the skills and confidence to get out there and work for yourself, winning jobs and contracts. Depending on what level you are studying, you can expect to learn about the principles of health and safety, environmental awareness, plumbing theory, plumbing practice, cold and hot water processes, sanitation, central heating, and employment rights. Our Level 1 course will give you the basic knowledge and skills of plumbing and electrical, but if you want to gain employment you will need to progress onto our Level 2 course. You will gain technical skills and knowledge to secure employment within the plumbing industry. Our courses will allow you to complete the theory units of the full diplomas you need to be fully qualified (employment within the plumbing industry is essential to becoming fully qualified). You will also receive the wisdom of an excellent teaching team with a wealth of industry experience. The Prince’s trust If you feel that you need to develop confidence, motivation, communication and life skills, then joining the Prince’s Trust TEAM programme could be perfect for you. It’s a free, intensive 12-week personal development course for 16-25 year olds, offering exciting challenges and providing new skills and qualifications. The Prince’s Trust is a highly-respected charity that helps young people in the UK who are not in work, education or training. On the TEAM programme, you’ll work as part of a small team based at one of our sites in Brighton, Hove, Shoreham or Bognor. Our friendly and supportive Team Leaders will guide you through the projects and help you to learn new skills. The programme involves spending a week at a residential centre and taking part in a TEAM Challenge where you will be caring for others. You’ll also complete a work placement, work on a community-based project and plan and stage an end of Team presentation to celebrate your achievements. This is usually held at the world-famous Grand Hotel on Brighton seafront. The course lasts for a period of 12 weeks with Teams starting in September, January and May each year.

Access to higher education If you want to prepare yourself for degree-level education in a supportive environment, an Access course is the ideal route. The courses last one year and involve approximately three days a week at College. A recent moderation report by LASER commented that “City College is clearly demonstrating best practice and offering a great service to Access students”. To succeed on an Access course, you’ll need to be 19 or over, motivated, enthusiastic, be able to manage your time effectively and be ready to study. You will be part of a group of adult students who are excited about learning and are willing to work hard with other members of the group and participate. We offer a wide range of Access courses, all of which provide an opportunity to learn more about a specific subject area as well as core skills, so they are excellent preparation for study at university. Forget school you will be learning in a friendly, community-spirited college environment. All of your classes will be highly engaging and enable you to be involved and assessed by a range of methods including presentations, essays, reports, case studies, short answer tasks, and for some courses, practical work. Entry requirements Access courses are designed for people without the appropriate skills and qualifications to prepare for higher education. If you do not already have a GCSE grade C in English and GCSE Maths grade D you will need to demonstrate literacy and numeracy at an appropriate level for the course by completing an initial assessment at interview. You will need to show a good level of motivation, be fully committed to the course and be able to spend a minimum of 8 hours per week studying at home. Safeguarding At City College we have the strongest commitment to making sure our students experience a secure, safe and welcoming environment. In our last Ofsted inspection this work was recognised as Outstanding. Through our Safeguarding work we help each individual student fulfil their potential by having robust policies and procedures in place to safeguard young people and vulnerable adults including antibullying, e-safety and health and safety. We have clear ways to recognise and refer any issues of concern, we take all reasonable steps to minimise risk and follow up with appropriate action to address any welfare concerns.

Financial Support All courses in this prospectus are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2014. The only fees you may have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the College’s Learner Bursary Funds or you can arrange to loan essential items from the College. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your course offer letter. Please contact the Student Centre for more information - 01273 667709. Other student benefits There are a range of financial support packages for those students who would otherwise find it difficult to attend college. You can receive help with your transport costs and your course costs (see page 90). You can also benefit from cheap haircuts in the College Revival Salon, reduced priced meals and drinks in the college refectory and low priced stationery in the college shop. Our East Campus has a fully equipped gym that is also available to students outside of lesson times. All students aged 16+ can apply for an NUS Extra card. These cards give student discounts in a wide range of high street shops and some online retailers. Cards can be purchased online from www.nus.org.uk

Bursaries City College may be able to offer you financial support if you meet certain criteria. The information below is for students who will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August 2014. Here is a summary of the funds that may be available to you:
The Guaranteed Bursary This is a payment of up to £1,200 per academic year if you are: • In care • A care leaver • In receipt of Income Support or Universal Credits in your own name • Disabled and in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) plus Employment Support Allowance (ESA) or Personal Independence Payments (PIP) in your own name
Local Authority Travel Support Your Local Authority may offer travel support if you are aged between 16 and 18 on the 31st August 2014 and you or your family are in receipt of a means-tested benefit or Child Tax Credit, on a low income and you live more than 3 miles away from the College.
College Bursary for Travel If you do not qualify for Local Authority Travel Support, you live more than 2 miles away (as the crow flies) from the College and your family is on a low income then the College may be able to help you with this cost.
College Bursary for Kit and Uniform Some courses require a kit or a uniform. If you are studying a course with one of these costs and your family is on a low income then you can apply for help with these costs.
Care to Learn If you are a young parent aged 19 or under when you start your course then Care to Learn may be able to help pay for your childcare costs.
Residential Support Scheme If you are moving to Brighton to study because the course you want to do is not available closer to home, then you may be able to get financial help with the cost of your term-time accommodation.

Being eligible to submit an application does not guarantee an award. • If you are awarded funding for kit or equipment then the College will order and supply these items for you. You will not be given funds to purchase these items. • The application form asks for personal and financial information. You sign this application form to confirm that the information you have given us is correct. If you are awarded funding on the basis of false information then you may have your funding withdrawn and you may also be asked to return any funds you have received. • You will not receive an award from the College if: - You are under 16 years of age on 31st August 2013 - You have any outstanding debts to the College - You are planning to enrol on a course that does not receive government funding (you can check this with a Student Advisor at the College) - You are receiving funding for a Higher Education course - You are on a waged apprenticeship - You are on an Adult and Community Learning course - You are in prison or a young Offenders institution and are attending College on day release

how to apply Before making an application to us, we offer all students the opportunity to come to the College and talk to our staff and tutors about coming to City College and the subject options available to you. Application Form Simply fill out your details using the enclosed application form or download a copy from our website (www.ccb.ac.uk). We will acknowledge receipt of your application with 7 working days. If you are in a Brighton and Hove Secondary School, you will be able to complete an application form with the support of your tutor.
Choosing your subject area Look up all our subject areas on our website at www.ccb.ac.uk where you will find in-depth information about the courses we will be running in 2014/15.
Visits to Schools We visit schools in the Autumn Term to talk to Year 11 students about vocational learning, our College and course options. If you are not sure whether we visit your school, just ask your Year Head or Careers Co-ordinator.

Welcome Days If you are offered a place on a course you may be invited to our ‘Welcome Days’ during July. You will come to college to meet the other people on the course, prepare for your start in September and you’ll have fun too!
If English is not your first language There are minimum English language entry requirements for enrolment onto College courses. Your English language level (reading, writing, speaking and listening) will need to be one level lower than the course you are applying for. You may be required to attend an assessment prior to enrolment to ensure the level of your English is suitable for the course you wish to enrol on. If you require support to reach the required level, you may be referred to ESOL classes.
