CASE STUDY JULIANA SALVATTI For Juliana, originally from Brazil, the Travel & Tourism Foundation Degree has been her first experience of Higher Education in the UK. “At first I was quite worried because I was 26 and most of the other students were 18 or 19 but everyone was so friendly and respectful which made it so much easier to settle into the course”, says Juliana. The education system is very different in Brazil and the tutors have been really flexible and patient to help me adapt and progress with my studies. It was quite hard in the beginning but I think my English language skills have improved a lot, as have my study and research skills. I particularly enjoyed studying tourism destinations and it’s got me thinking about the marketing side of tourism because the tutor made the subject really come alive. I’ve now become interested in pursuing tourism marketing in my future career.” As part of her course, Juliana has got six months of hands-on experience working in the tourist industry at the ‘Visit Brighton’ Visitor Information Centre, which has included the busy summer season.“My work placement has been an amazing part of the course”, she enthuses. “My colleagues are fantastic and I’ve learnt so much about Brighton and the UK and the different needs of domestic and international customers. I’m also gaining skills in administration and customer service that blend perfectly with what I’ve been learning at City College”
