Meet Awesome

Auggie Our Mascot! It’s hard to resist a character as warm, wonderful, and woolly as Auggie—Fort Saskatchewan’s charming mascot. Auggie’s job is to make sure everyone who crosses his path feels that they are part of the Fort Saskatchewan flock. No matter how big or small you are, feel free to give this cuddly sheep a friendly hug or high five (or three). Auggie’s full name is Augustus, after Fort Augustus, the North West Company fur trading post built here in 1795. He’s a natural choice to link Fort Saskatchewan’s lively past with our stimulating present. Don’t ewe agree? Look for Auggie’s guest appearances at events throughout the year, including the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce Trade Show & Sale, Legacy Park Family Festival, Canada Day Celebrations, Farmers’ Market Opening, Co--op’s Movie Under the Stars, Neighbour Day and the Santa Claus Parade. Follow Auggie (@AuggieFtSk) on Twitter to learn about events and happenings in Fort Saskatchewan. You can invite Auggie to your special event by calling the Sheep Hotline: 780.992.6261. 8

Our Historic River Valley

The City of Fort Saskatchewan entered history well over 200 years ago with its original industry of canoe building. Near the mouth of the Sturgeon River was an ideal location for raw materials and the First Nations people named the area "Birch Hills." It was there that Anthony Henday camped in the spring of 1755 to prepare for his trip back to Hudson Bay.

Fort Saskatchewan Timeline 1795 – the North West Company built Fort Augustus across the river from present day Fort Saskatchewan. In the fall, the rival Hudson’s Bay Company established Edmonton House within musket-shot range of Fort Augustus 1802 – the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company relocated to Edmonton 1821 – the two companies joined forces and established the fifth and last Edmonton House south of Edmonton’s current-day legislative buildings

In the late 1700’s, the North West Company and Hudson’s Bay Company arrived in the area that came to be Fort Saskatchewan. They established fur trading posts but by the early 1800’s, the fur trade was no longer profitable. The North West Company and Hudson’s Bay Company relocated to Edmonton, eventually merging as one company in 1821.

1874 – the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) arrived at Fort Edmonton

In 1874, the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) arrived here after a grueling march across the prairies. Led by Inspector W.D. Jarvis, 19 men of ‘A’ Division wintered at Fort Edmonton. In the spring of 1875, Jarvis looked for a strategic down-stream location to build a NWMP fort and thinking the Canadian Pacific

1872 – Francois and Joseph Lamoureux arrived in the district and occupied land on the north side of the North Saskatchewan River

Our Historic River Valley Railway would cross the river here, built Sturgeon Creek Post where modern-day Fort Saskatchewan is located. The name of the fort quickly changed to Fort Saskatchewan and although the railway’s plans changed, the fort positioned the community as a key northern police garrison. During the 1885 Riel Rebellion, the Seventh Company of the 65th Montreal Rifles protected the fort. The police fort was enlarged to become ‘G’ Division headquarters, but in 1913, the division was transferred to Edmonton.

Fort Saskatchewan Timeline 1875 – Fort Saskatchewan was founded when the North West Mounted Police built a fort on the current site of modern-day Fort Saskatchewan 1885 – Fort Saskatchewan became the headquarters on the 100-strong NWMP “G” Division 1889 – a house was built for the commanding officer of the North West Mounted Police in the northwest section of the old fort 1893 – the community boasted a general store, church, telegraph office, post office, hotel and bakery. 1894 to 1906 – Fort Saskatchewan’s population grew from 140 to more than 500 1899 – Fort Saskatchewan was incorporated as a village 1903 – an exceptional year for construction occurred with 53 new buildings constructed in the summer including Fort Saskatchewan’s first bank, the Union Bank, which later became the Royal Bank of Canada 1904 – Fort Saskatchewan was incorporated as a town. 1905 – residents jubilantly welcomed the arrival of the Canadian Northern Railway and the distinctive wood frame Fort Saskatchewan train station was built 1909 – the brick court house was erected

1875-1885 NWMP Fort

Today, the City of Fort Saskatchewan is committed to preserving its history and has opened the first phase of the 1875-1885 NWMP Fort. The Men's Quarters, Officers' Quarters and the Divisional Kitchen/Guardroom are open for visitors and are home to educational and interpretive programs. The next phase of the project is almost complete and will include the stable. 12

HISTORY

1911 – 49 businesses and an $8,000 opera house were in operation 1913 – most of the NWMP “G” Division was transferred to Edmonton and fire swept through a large portion of Fort Saskatchewan’s business section, destroying $24,000 worth of buildings 1914 – hopes for an inter-urban street railway between Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton were dashed when war broke out in August. Many young men from the area enlisted.

Our Historic River Valley In 1913, the same year ‘G’ Division was transferred to Edmonton, the Alberta Government began to build a gaol (jail) in Fort Saskatchewan. It was used to hold criminals sentenced to two years less a day, as well as prisoners awaiting trial. Between 1916 and 1960, 29 prisoners were executed here. The prison operated an 800 acre farm to grow the inmates’ food, a gymnasium to maintain fitness, and carpentry, autobody and license plate shops. Old Gaol

Fort Saskatchewan Timeline 1914 – the North West Mounted Police fort was dismantled and the provincial government built the $200,000 provincial gaol on the NWMP site to replace an overcrowded NWMP guardroom. 1917 – an Alberta Provincial Police Force detachment with one member was established 1926 – The trail between Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton was graveled. 1930 – The trail between Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton was oiled.

One of Alberta's oldest Euro-Canadian communities, the settlement grew and became an agricultural distribution centre for the region. In 1904, Fort Saskatchewan became a town. Travelers to and from Edmonton had to make their way along a rough dirt trail that snaked around swamps and woods until the much celebrated 1905 arrival of the Canadian Northern Railway. The railway station was built near the town centre, near several grain elevators and a stockyard.

Warden’s House

1937 – The 1889 house built for the commanding officer of the NWMP was replaced by the current Warden’s house, with hardwood floors and French doors, making it one of the most luxurious homes of this period. 1950 – the trail between Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton was paved 1955 – Sherritt Gordon transferred its Research Division to Fort Saskatchewan from Ottawa. The Fort Saskatchewan site began its cobalt refinery, which still operates. The Sherritt nickel refinery is also still running. 1958 – the Fort Saskatchewan Historical Society was established 1970 – the three-acre Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site was established

Our Historic River Valley In 1911, an addition was built on its west side to accommodate the community’s growing population and it became a significant stop on the transcontinental line from the east and an important transportation hub for this fertile farming district. It served Fort Saskatchewan until the late 1980s.

Fort Saskatchewan Timeline

The railway was also an important factor when Sherritt Gordon Mines was looking for a place to locate its nickel refinery in the early 1950s. Alberta’s natural gas deposits, needed for the ammonia leach process, was also a factor in attracting this company to the area. The community grew even more and welcomed additional industries after Sherritt Gordon Mines moved here in 1952.

1990 – the 1909 Courthouse was designated a Provincial Historic Resource

1985 – the site of the original 1875 North West Mounted Police fort was designated a Provincial Historic Resource 1988 – a new facility south of Hwy 15 was built to replace the old gaol

1992 – the City of Fort Saskatchewan began using sheep to maintain turf areas

Herding sheep

1994 – all gaol buildings were demolished except for the Warden’s house, gym, trades centre, workshop and management office 2007 – our city hosted 1,200 athletes and visitors at the 2007 Alberta Seniors Games 2008 – the original Canadian Northern Railway station was designated a Provincial Historic Resource

1909 Courthouse

The Courthouse at the Museum provides a structural reminder of the city's long tradition of law and order. It was constructed in 1909 as part of the government's ambitious program to develop the administrative and legal infrastructure of Alberta shortly after the province's creation. The courthouse originally heard both the criminal proceedings of prisoners from the Provincial Gaol and the disputes and issues of the local citizenry. The main floor also served as a residence for a member of the Alberta Provincial Police. 16

2010 – The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay was welcomed into the City by 5,000 spectators. Many of the residents celebrated the Olympics with the “Spirit of the Torch” celebration at the Dow Centennial Centre. 2010 – the City of Fort Saskatchewan celebrated 25 years as a city on July 1st 2011 – Dow Canada celebrated 50 years in the Fort Saskatchewan Community 2011 – The Men’s Quarters and Officers’ Quarters of the 1875-1885 NWMP Fort opened 2013 – New City Hall opens 2014 – Shell Canada celebrate 30 years in Fort Saskatchewan and Sherritt International celebrates 60 years 2014 – the Dow Centennial Centre and Shell Theatre has been open for 10 years

Sheep Grazing

Our Best-Loved City Sheep It started out as turf control but ended up as a major tourist attraction. If ewe haven’t already heard, the City of Fort Saskatchewan uses a flock of sheep (Finnsheep to be exact) to keep the grass trim in city parks. This eco-friendly way of looking after lawns has garnered regional, national and international acclaim since its beginning in 1992. The sheep are an irresistible delight to Fort Saskatchewan residents and visitors alike. It’s quite the sight to see a shepherd in the city, herding the flock of about 50 warm, friendly, and fuzzy sheep between Fort Saskatchewan’s parks. Border collies work to help keep the flock together.

CULTURE

Join the Finnsheep Flock! Hours: Although subject to change without notice, the grazing schedule is 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Thursday to Sunday, and statutory holidays, from June 7 to September 1, 2014. Locations: The area next to Legacy Park (100 Avenue and 101 Street),

You’re welcome to come up close and meet the living lawnmowers. The quiet sheep love attention and you can expect the whole flock to surround you! The sheep keep park grass trim and neat, their manure improves soil quality and the grazing sheep can reduce the use of pesticides and fossil fuels. The friendly sheep symbolize the perfect mascot for Fort Saskatchewan—a community known for friendliness, warmth and hospitality. The animals always return to the farm healthy and well fed. In fact, the sheep thrive so well on park grass, they have to be loaded into two trailers to go home, though they fit in just one upon arrival!

Beside the Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site in Peter T. Ream Historic Park (100 Avenue and 101 Street), Around the Rotary Amphitheatre in the river valley.

Downtown Public Art The City of Fort Saskatchewan's Downtown Public Art program cultivates, connects and encourages a community rich in artistic and cultural opportunities and to breathe creativity and life into the heart of our downtown.

Mural The mural depicts the story of Fort Saskatchewan. A story of a fort on the North Saskatchewan River beginning with Aboriginal peoples, explorers, and fur traders. By 1874, the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) built Sturgeon Creek Post, which came to be called Fort Saskatchewan. Settlers followed and stayed to establish commerce, trade, and Inspector Jarvis industry. Still on the site of the original fort, The life-sized bronze statue of Inspector Fort Saskatchewan has become a thriving Jarvis is located in the Historic Precinct city, proud to honour its original settlers with overlooking the 1875-1885 North West this mural. Mounted Police Fort. Inspector Jarvis was to find the perfect spot for a new NWMP Fort. And he chose the new site about 30 kilometres downstream from Fort Edmonton near the junction of the Sturgeon and North Saskatchewan rivers.

Art Benches Olive Over twenty years of the wildly popular sheep grazing program in Fort Saskatchewan is now enshrined in a new bronze sheep statue fondly named “Olive” after the longest serving member of the grazing crew who retired to farm life after the 2012 season.

46

The art benches are a very unique Youth Art project completed by art students from the JP II and Fort High Schools. The students designed and painted fun benches that are located throughout downtown to be enjoyed by all. There are five colourful benches with themes ranging from superheroes to candy!

Fort Saskatchewan

Prairie

Fort Saskatchewan Prairie, located in West River's Edge Park on the western edge of our city and bordering the south side of the North Saskatchewan River, is one of three remaining native prairie remnants in the Capital Region. The City of Fort Saskatchewan acquired this 13 hectare parcel of land to protect its natural heritage for the community and visitors to enjoy. The Prairie’s main entrance gate is located southwest of the Red Coat Landing boat launch, next to the West River’s Edge Wetlands Conservation Area. Thanks to a grant from BP Canada Energy, interpretive signs were added throughout this natural landscape to guide and educate visitors about the native plants and animals that still live here. One sign honours Dr. G. H. Turner who was one of the first doctors here in early 1900. He was an avid botanist, finding and naming 10,000 different plants in the area. He dedicated his collection to the University of Alberta Herbarium for 63

conservation. Botanists from the Edmonton Naturalization Group, have collected seeds from rare plants in Fort Saskatchewan Prairie to grow in their nursery and to help preserve the species. While walking in the Fort Saskatchewan Prairie, you might come across deer, porcupine, skunks or a moose. Several kinds of birds come through on migration and nest here either in the trees or on the ground. To protect this natural preserve, only foot traffic is permitted. Also there are no campfires allowed and dogs must be kept on a leash.

For information about helping with restoration activities or to book a guided tour or school field trip, contact S. Benoit at 780.998.1657. For more information about the Fort Saskatchewan Naturalist Society contact Art Hughes at 780.920.0090.

Santa Claus is Coming to Fort Saskatchewan! Don’t miss this wonderful start to a season of delight! Saturday, November 29 11:00 am There’s nothing like a wintertime parade to kick off the festive holiday season! Santa loves to visit the friendly folk of Fort Saskatchewan. Every November, they join the array of colourful floats making their way through the downtown core, happy to greet the many excited children and photo-snapping adults. Previous years have seen more than 1,000 spectators and nearly 40 parade entries. Watch out for the Mayor, dressed in costume and of course, Auggie—Fort Saskatchewan’s beloved City mascot. Remember to bring your letter for Santa! Volunteers of the Chamber of Commerce walk the parade route to collect the letters, which they deliver to Santa so he can personally answer each one. Be sure to return Santa’s cheerful wave and catch some candy, then follow the sound of sleigh bells through downtown starting at 99th Avenue at 108th Street and winds through the city centre. Join jolly Santa Claus and his hard-working elves at this celebration of the most magical season. It’s a charming start to this season of delight!

Christmas Marketplace Saturday, November 29, 12:00 pm Visit and shop from 100 unique vendors at the Dow Centennial Centre. This is a must attend shopping event with local artisans, photographers, sculptors, jewellery, chocolate and unique Christmas decorations. Bring the kids for free photos with Santa.
