Location and Territory Bulgaria is located in South-Eastern Europe and occupies the Eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. To the North, the country borders with Romania via the Danube River, to the East it touches the Black Sea, its southern neighbours are Turkey and Greece, and to the West it borders with the Republic of Macedonia and Serbia. The total territory of the country is 110 993 sq. km and Bulgaria ranks 15th in size among the other European countries.

History

The Bulgarian state was founded in 681 as a union of new-settled Proto-Bulgarians, Slavs and with the participation of the local Balkan people and Thracians. The Thracians were a tribal society who inhabited a vast area in Central and Southeastern Europe. They were known for making filigree gold and silver jewellery. The great Homer described a Thracian king in Iliad, having “the biggest and handsomest horses I ever saw,/whiter than snow and swifter than the winds/and a chariot finely wrought with silver and gold.” The so called Proto-Bulgarians came to the Bulgarian lands from the steppe region of the Volga River basin. They were nomads and in IV c. AD were associated with the Huns. Although being a tribe of equestrians protoBulgarians, in VII c. AD they allied with the sedentary people of the Slavs, who had spreaded all over Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans in 6th century, mainly shepherds and farmers, to form the The First Bulgarian State. It gained political recognition from the Byzantine Empire in 681 A.D. The state was ruled by Khan Asparuh, the leader of the proto-Bulgarians, and its capital was Pliska.

История

Болгарское государство создано в 681 году в результате слияния пришедших из Азии протоболгар и славян с участием местного населения на Балканском полуострове - фракийцев. Фракийцы были племенные общества, населяющие обширную территорию в Центральной и Юго-Восточной Европе. Они были известны мастерством в работе с филигранным золотом и серебром. Великий Гомер описал фракийского царя в Илиаде как владетеля имеющего “самых больших и красивых лошадей, которых я когда-либо видел, / белее снега и быстрее ветра /и колесницу, искусно сделанную из серебра и золота.“ Так называемые протоболгары пришли на болгарские земли со степей Поволжья. Они были кочевниками и в IV в. до н..э. и были связаны с гуннами. Несмотря на то, что они были племенем наездников, протоболгары в VII в. н.э. объединились с оседлым народом славян, который уже в VI в. занимал земли Центральной и Восточной Европы и Балканах и в основном были пастухами и земледельцами. 8 Bulgaria in Brief This First Bulgarian State stretched from Transylvania in the north to the Aegean Sea in the south and from the Black Sea in the east to the Adriatic Sea in the west. It fell to the Byzantines in 1018. During that period, in 855 was created the Slavic alphabet. It was named Cyrillic alphabet, after St. Cyril, and corresponded perfectly to the phonetic riches of the Slavonic-Bulgarian language. As of today more than 250 million people in Europe and Asia use the cyrillyc alphabet for their national languages, half of them are in Russia. With the accession of Bulgaria in EU, Cyrillic became the third official alphabet of the union. It was in 864 that Tsar Boris I converted the state to Orthodox Christianity. The Second Bulgarian State, established in 1185 at Veliko Tarnovo, reinstated the borders and a Golden Age began during which Bulgaria bordered on three seas. From 1396 to 1878 the country was under the rule (the so called ‘yoke’) of the Ottoman Turks. Sofia became the capital of Bulgaria after the Veliko Tarnovo Constitution was accepted in 1879. From 1878 (liberation from the Ottoman Turks) to 1944, Bulgaria enjoyed a brief but unstable period of freedom. After 1944 the Communist Party, led by Georgi Dimitrov, took power and proclaimed Bulgaria a People’s Republic in 1946. The Communist regime lasted till November 10th, 1989 when Bulgaria peacefully ousted the Party leader Todor Zhivkov. One of the first sign of Bulgaria’s democratization after 1989 was the establishment of a multi-party system. The new Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria, adopted on July 12, 1991, proclaims the country as parliamentary republic. On March 29, 2004 Bulgaria joined NATO, and on January 1, 2007 the country became a member of the European Union.

Religion Full freedom of the religious denominations is proclaimed in the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria. According to the census from 2011, 76% of the population are Eastern Orthodox Christians, 10 % are Muslims, 0.8% - Catholics, 1.1% are Protestants and 0,2 % are from other religions.

Population and Ethnic Groups Bulgaria is a country with a population of almost 8 millions people. According to the 2011 census, 83,9 % of the people in Bulgaria are ethnic Bulgarians, and the biggest minorities are the ethnic Turks (9,4%) and the Roma (4,7%). The remaining 2% include smaller minorities like Armenians, Russians, Romanians, Ukrainians, Greeks and Jews.

Official Language and Alphabet Bulgarian. Other spoken languages are English, German, French and Russian.

The country’s relief is varied (from 0 to 2,925 m above the sea level) and about 60 percent of the territory are hilly and mountainous. The most famous mountains are: Rila (with the highest mountain peak on the Balkan Peninsula Mussala – 2 925 m), Pirin (Vihren Peak – 2 914 m), the Central Balkan (Botev Peak – 2 376 m), the Rhodope Mountains (Golyam Perelik Peak – 2 191 m) and Vitosha Mountain near Sofia (Cherni Vrah Peak – 2 290 m). Numerous natural phenomena are scattered across the country: mountain passes and gorges rock-pyramids and bizarre rock formations, numerous caves and waterfalls, beautiful lakes. Some of the most famous are: the Melnik Pyramids, the Fossil Forest, the Belogradchik Rocks; the gorges of the rivers Trigradska in the Rhodopes and Erma near the town of Tran, Vratsata; the valleys of the rivers Iskar, Struma and Mesta, the canyon of the Roussenski Lom River; the Srebarna Lake; the rock monastery Aladja off the city of Varna, etc. There is a great diversity of karst forms, among these some 4,600 caves. The deepest cave in Bulgaria is Raichova Dupka (387 m deep), and the longest is Duhlata (17,600 m long). The best known are: the Ledenika, the Magurata and the Saeva Dupka Caves in the Balkan range; the Snezhanka, the Yagodinskata, the Dyavolsko Garlo, and the Uhlovitsa Caves – in the Rhodope Mountains.

Climate

The climate is moderate continental with Mediterranean influence to the South. The average annual temperature is 10,5 degrees Celsius. Four seasons are distinctly expressed – winter, spring, summer and autumn. January is the coldest month of the year. July and August are the hottest summer months and sometimes temperatures go above 30 degrees Celsius. Bulgarians enjoy 2000 to 24000 hours of sunlight per year.

Waters

Bulgaria boasts a huge variety and number of mineral springs of different chemical composition, suitable for prophylaxis and treatments of many diseases. There are about 600 mineral water deposits in Bulgaria with more than 1,600 springs, located mainly at the foothills of mountains. There are many spa resorts in Bankya, Velingrad, Sandanski, the mineral baths of Stara Zagora, Narechen, Sliven and Haskovo, as well as in Kyustendil, Varshets, Hissarya, Merichleri, Momin Prohod and Kostenets. Beautiful lakes lie hidden in the cirques of Rila and Pirin Mountains. There are also dams, surrounded by impressive nature, such as Iskar, Batak, Dospat and many others.

Flora and Fauna

Bulgaria is rich in places where nature has been preserved almost unspoiled and vegetation demonstrates remarkable diversity. A total of 12 360 species have been found in its composition. Январь – самый холодный месяц в году. Июль и август – самые жаркие летние месяцы и иногда температуры превышают 30 градусов Цельсия.

Воды

Болгария может похвастаться огромным разнообразием и количеством минеральных источников разного химического состава, показанных для профилактики и лечения многих заболеваний. Существует около 600 местонахождений минеральных вод в Болгарии с более чем 1600 источников, расположенных в основном у подножья гор. Многие курорты предлагают СПА процедуры - Банкя, Велинград, Сандански, Стара Загора, Наречен, Сливен и Хасково, Кюстендил, Выршец, Хисаря, Меричлери, Момин Проход и Костенец. Communication

The country offers a highway network, including six international highways, which meet the international standards and link Europe with the Orient, and the North with the South. Four out of the ten Trans-European corridors cross the territory of Bulgaria – IV, VIII, IX and X. The first airline in the country, Sofia-Burgas, was opened in 1947. Today there are four Bulgaran airports, servicing commercial airlines: Burgas Airport (BOJ), Plovdiv Airport (PDV), Sofia Airport (SOF) and Varna Airport (VAR). Inter-city and long distance bus transport are also well developed. Urban transport services are provided mainly by bus lines, trolley buses, subway and tramways. Petrol stations on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria offer petrol with octane numbers 92, 98 and 95 H-unleaded, as well as diesel fuel. There are petrol stations at each FCPP, along international and secondary roads, and in towns and villages. Railway roads – 6 500 km, the better part of which are electric power operated.

On the 1st of January 2007 Bulgaria joined the European Union. Visitors arriving from the EU don’t need a visa, but should carry a passport or other valid identity document confirming the nationality of the bearer. Citizens of some non-EU countries may travel to Bulgaria for tourism and business purposes without a visa if the planned stay in Bulgaria does not exceed 90 days. For further information visit the website of the Bulgarian Embassy or Consulate in your country. All other foreigners may cross the border of the Republic of Bulgaria if they hold a valid passport and an appropriate visa (Airport Transit Visa, Transit Visa, Regular Visa or Work Visa). As of 2012, Schengen visa holders have the right for a stay of up to 30 days within 6 months period, withut a short-stay Bulgarian visa.

1-ого января 2007 г. Болгария вступила в Европейский Союз. Прибывающим из ЕС не нужна виза, но они должны иметь при себе паспорт или другое удостоверение личности подтверждающий гражданство предъявителя. Граждане некоторых стран вне пределов ЕС могут ездить по Болгарии в целях туризма и деловых целях без визы, если запланированное пребывание в Болгарии не превышает 90 дней. Identification should be carried on you at all times. In case of stolen or lost documents, you must go immediately to the nearest police station where a protocol of the accident will be made. Be sure to take a copy of it with you otherwise you can not leave the country.

12 Bulgaria in Brief Customs Regulations Across the border passengers may import and export commodities, which, by their nature, type and quantities, are not of commercial nature (passenger is any individual crossing the state border of the Republic of Bulgaria). These do not include items the passenger carries for personal use and consumption. Passengers have the right to import at zero customs duty or import fees the items they need during their stay in the country, which, in type and quantities, correspond to both purpose and duration of the stay.

Traffic Regulations Traffic rules on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as road signals, are in compliance with European Standards. Drivers, who exceed the specified speed limitations, are fined in the cases, when they have not threatened the safety of other participants in the traffic. Participants in a road accident driving a car with foreign registration are obliged to remain on the site and wait for the traffic police to come. Drivers are banned from driving after consuming alcoholic drinks (over 0.5 percent per 1000 in the blood) and/or when they are under the influence of other intoxicating substances.

Правила дорожного движения Правила движения по дорогам республики Болгарии, как и дорожные знаки, соответствуют европейским стандартам. Водители МТС, превышавшие допустимую скорость без непосредственной опасности для движения, наказываются штрафом. Участник дорожно-транспортного происшествия, управляющий МТС с загранрегистрацией обязан оставаться на месте происшествия до прибытия компетентных органов - дорожной полиции. Водителям МТС запрещено управление МТС после употребления алкоголя (выше 0,5% на тысячу в крови) или если находятся под воздействием наркотического средства.

Vignette System

Система виньеток

The Vignette system is valid for the National Road Network, except for the ring roads and by-pass roads of populated areas as well as the roads within populated areas. Buying a vignette, you have the right to use over 300 km of motor ways and over 18 000 km of roads for the period specified in the vignette.

Система виньеток (виньетка – наклейка– стикер - вид дорожного сбора) за проезд по республиканским дорогам, кроме кольцевых дорог рядом с населенными пунктами и в них. Покупая виньетку, вы получаете право использовать около 30 км автострад и более 18 000 км дорог в течение периода, указанного на виньетке.

Where to buy a vignette from? You can buy a vignette from all border-crossing points (BPCs) of the Republic of Bulgaria. There you will find the units of REA (designated with the relevant mark). These units are open 24 hours. The prices of vignettes are in Euro (EUR). Apart from Euro, in the border units of REA you can pay for the vignette in USD as well.

ATTENTION: Driving road vehicles on the Vignette Network without a valid vignette, is a violation and subject to sanctions in accordance to the Road Traffic Law. Assess carefully the duration of your stay and buy appropriate vignette.

TIPS Features About Bulgarians

One unique feature is that Bulgarians most often nod for ‘no’ and shake their heads for ‘yes’. Watch out! It can lead to a great confusion. It is common courtesy to take flowers when invited to someone’s home. These should be an odd number i.e. 3, 5 or 7 stems. 2, 4 or 6 stems are taken only at funerals. Many public places charge small fees to use their washrooms, usually 0,20-0,50 leva.

Beggars Although not common, beggars can be found in some of the tourist resorts. Although they might be disturbing, ignoring them is the most effective way of coping with the situation.

Crime

Bulgaria has a middle crime rated compared the other European countries. It make good sense to stick with sensible anticrime measures that you would normally carry out in your home country, such as leaving valuables and passports in the hotel safe and being discreet when handling cash in crowded areas. 16 Bulgaria in Brief Albena The resort is located along a wide beach with shallow waters. It is a preferred location for family recreation. In terms of accommodation it has 20 000 beds in 44 hotels which are mainly three and two-star hotels, villa settlements, and a camping site. The health centre at the four-star hotel Dobrudzha offers medical services all year round. Very close to the resort is one of the few dense forests, which have been preserved - Baltata preservation area.

Balchik Balchik is a small attractive old town in which it is worth spending some time to explore it and enjoy the atmosphere of the street cages or shops in the market. Ancient Greeks traded here and Bulgarians exploited a flourishing Black Sea port for 700 years until the invasion of the Turks in 1396. It was a town populated mainly by Muslims until the last century. Many old buildings have survived and, as you walk down the steep main street to the harbour, there are tantalizing views of clock towers, a minaret, terraced gardens, old granaries, and the sea beyond. There are many traditional Balkan style houses around the market place and a Turkish Mosque nearby. The Museum of National Revival includes the first Bulgarian church in Balchik and a 19th century school or boys. The two museums display interesting exhibits of traditional costumes, pieces of local craftsmanship and pottery.

Russalka The resort is located in the exotic Bird’s Bay (Taouk Liman) among the centuries-old oak forest. It has 350 separate houses, restaurants and a recreation centre with professional tennis courts, mini football and volleyball playgrounds, table tennis, a horse-riding club, and a yacht club.

Burgas REGION

Burgas region occupies the farthest southeast part of the country. To the south it borders to the Republic of Turkey, with Malko Turnovo checkpoint being the direct link to Istanbul. To the east, the region reaches the Black Sea coast. The region includes 13 municipalities.

Land

The landscape is varied and characterized by lowlands with rolling hills and mountains. The climate is transitional continental with strong influence of the Black Sea along the coast. There are often droughts in summer. The mountains are forested mainly by deciduous trees, and some evergreen Mediterranean species could be found to the south. The territory of the region contains a number of natural phenomena and protected sites. The coastline is covered with spacious sand beaches.

People, Towns And Culture

The region is characterized by a considerably varied population structure and distribution, In general, migration from all municipalities is directed to the center of the region - Burgas (pop. 212 902), which is the reason for the town’s growth. Burgas is the country’s major seaport. The town is also a cultural center, with established academic institutions. 22 overview Burgas city and beach resortS The town of Burgas is situated on the Black sea coast, by the Burgas bay, on a flat plain, known as the Burgas plate. It lies at an average elevation of 17 m above the sea level. Salt lakes cover the areas south and north of town. They are a protected territory as part of the south-migrating birds’ route, also known as Via Pontica. The climate is moderately continental with a clearly expressed sea influence. Summer is usually pleasant and fresh due to the permanent breezes. During the summer air temperatures in the daytime average 26.4°C, and that of the seawater is 24.7°C. The number of sunny days in the summer varies between 24 and 27 per month, with an average of 10-11 hours of sunshine per day. Winter is mild, mostly without any snow. During the winter season the average air temperature is 4.6°C, and that of the water is 7.4°C. Due to the sea influence, autumns here are long and significantly warmer than in inland regions, while springs tend to be cold and arriving a month later.

History

The favourable living conditions on this fertile plain, close to the sea, have brought people to this region from early antiquity. The earliest signs of life date back to the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age. The region of Burgas is rich in archaeological finds, relating to the Thracian period (4th c B.C.). The name of Burgas derives from the Latin word burgos, meaning a tower. Local legends speak of a roman travel post, which used to lie in the area of today’s Burgas Port. 15 centuries later, then under the name of Pirgos, the settlement was mentioned in the works of the Byzantine poet, Manuel Phil. In 18th c. Burgas was the largest port, south of the Balkan range. The first map, showing the outline plan of Burgas dates from 1854. The first Bulgarian school and an orthodox church were opened in 1868. On 6th Feb 1878 Burgas was liberated from Ottoman rule by a contingent lead by Colonel Lermontov, brother of the great Russian poet, Mikhail Lermontov. The first City Hall was founded on 7th Feb 1878. A public library was opened in 1888 and three years later, the first outline city plan of Burgas was approved. Over the first few decades of 20th century the town underwent some fast industrialization. The beginning of an unprecedented cultural boom was marked by the establishment of reading halls (cultural centers), an archaeological society, a town museum, and the opening of the High School of Trade and the state School of Mechanics and Technology. A new boost to industrialization was given by the expansion and modernization of the town port, the airport construction, and the building of the Oil refinery, the largest one on the Balkans.

overview 23 Contemporary Burgas At the turn of 21st c. Burgas was a regional and municipal center, as well as the fourth largest town in Bulgaria, with a population of 212 902 inhabitants. Burgas is rated second among Bulgarian administrative districts in its industrial potential. Over 15,000 companies have been registered here, while unemployment is the lowest in the country - 4.3%. Burgas is an important industrial, commercial, transport and tourist center. The largest oil refinery on the Balkans - Lukoil Neftochim EAD - operates from here. The Burgas production palette is richly diverse in colour fuels and synthetic fibres, ships, cables and conductors, railway carriages, fans, construction materials, fish tins, vegetable oils, confectionary, biscuits, knitwear and clothing. Burgas has the largest port in the country with the only oil terminal south of the Balkan range, with a well-developed railway and road network. The airport boasts the best atmospheric conditions on the Balkan Peninsula and is the only one adapted for receiving supersonic planes. Since 1989 the Duty Free Zone of Burgas has been in operation. Burgas in itself is a tourist center, but also a starting point for visiting the Black sea resorts of Sunny Beach, the holiday villages of Elenite and Duni, the museumtowns of Nessebar and Sozopol, the Ropotamo Reserve and the Strandzha Nature Park.

Structure of the economic complex

The period after 1989 can be described with vital changes. There are 20 000 firms registered on the territory of the area, including Burgas - 19 295. The dynamic in opening and closing companies is big. 30 of them are with state property, 15 – with public property, 22 – with co-operate property, 80 – with share capital, 10 – with foreign property, 58 are mixed. All the rest are Bulgarian private companies. The companies in private sector are distributed mainly in the following branches: Industry; Construction; Transport; Trade. The extent, to which the production funds are used, is the lowest in the industry (around 50%) The extent of wearing long term material assets in the industry is around 55%. The district can be described as one of the highest concentrations of fundamental production funds in the country. This is due to the correspondence between local potential and realized economic activities. The economy has diversified character, which makes the district an economic leader and important center for the development in the area of 150 km around it. There is a conflict because of incompatibility between the basic economic functions. The development of a number of industrial activities is in contradiction with development of tourism and protection of the environment. There is a pressure in the balance of resources in the district because of the strong dominance of the heavy industry.

Современный Бургас На рубеже 21 века Бургас является региональным и муниципальным центром, как и четвертым по величине городом в Болгарии с населением 212 902 жителей. Бургас второй среди административных областей по промышленному потенциалу. Здесь зарегистрировано более 20 000 фирм, а безработица самая низкая в стране 4,3%. Бургас важный индустриальный, торговый, транспортный и туристический центр. Здесь работает самый большой нефтеперерабатывающий завод на Балканах – «Лукойл Нефтохим» ЕАД. Бургасский регион отличается разнообразием производств: различные виды горючего и синтетических волокон, кабели и провода, железнодорожные вагоны, вентиляторы, строительные материалы, рыбные консервы, растительные масла, кондитерские продукты, печенья, одежда. Бургасский порт самый большой в стране, где находится и единственный нефтяной терминал к югу от Балканских гор, с хорошо развитой железнодорожной и шоссейной сетью. Аэропорт гордится лучшими атмосферными условиями на Балканском полуострове и единственно он подготовлен для посадки сверхзвуковых самолетов. С 1989 г. существует Свободная беспошлинная зона Бургас. Бургас – туристический центр, отправной пункт для поездок на черноморский курорт «Солнечный берег», туристические поселки «Елените» и «Дюны», городамузеи Несебр и Созополь, заповедник Ропотамо и природный парк Странджа.

Структура экономики

Период после 1989 г. может быть описан как период жизненно важных перемен. На территории области зарегистрировано более 20 000 фирм, притом в Бургасе – 19 295. Тридцать компаний объекты государственной собственности, 15 – общественной, 22 – кооперативной, 80 – долевой, 10 – иностранной, 58 – смешанной, а остальные являются болгарскими частными фирмами. Фирмы в частном секторе, в основном, распределяются в следующих отраслях: индустрия, строительство, транспорт, торговля. Степень использования производственных фондов самая низкая в индустрии (около 50%). Уровень расходования долгосрочных материальных активов в индустрии – 55%. В регионе наблюдается самая высокая концентрация основных производственных фондов страны. Это связано с соответствием местного потенциала реализованным экономическим видам деятельности. Экономика отличается разнообразием, что делает регион экономическим лидером и важным центром развития области в радиусе 150 км. Существует конфликт из-за несоответствия основных экономических функций. Развитие ряда промышленных отраслей препятствует развитию туризма и наносит ущерб окружающей среде. Напряженность баланса ресурсов в регионе связана с доминированием тяжелой индустрии.

Существует технологическая и рыночная инфраструктура современного типа, как и беспошлинная зона, бизнес центры, агентства регионального развития и др. Здесь есть множество высших учебных заведений и исследовательских центров, институтов, которые стимулируют инновационную деятельность с возможностью создания технологических парков и других форм сочетания науки с производством. Есть условия для привлечения инвестиций в проекты в области портовых видов деятельности, воздушного транспорта, наземного транспорта, промышленности, торговли, туризма и др.

The main structure determined multibranches are chemical and petroleum refining industries, food, wine and tobacco industry, electrotechnical and electronic industry, as well as mechanical engineering and metalurgy. The chemical and petroleum refining industry are absolutely predominating. It provides 84,5% of the realized incomes with tendency its percentage to grow up. The amount of long term material assets is approximately 71% of the total for the branch in the area. The main representatives of the chemical industry are Lukoil Neftochim JSCo and Hemus Ltd. Infrastructure and Transport The town of Burgas has the typical structure and outline plan of Bulgarian towns in general - a central part incorporating the main administrative buildings and public establishments, cultural institutions and commercial outlets, and a periphery of residential districts with adjacent infrastructure and areas for recreation. A characteristic feature is the town’s east-facing aspect, towards the sea. Burgas’ old part has the shape of a crescent, open to the beach, and together with the seaside park they are the town’s two main attractions. Nearby are the administrative buildings, the central pedestrian and shopping areas, all the cultural institutions and the majority of entertainment outlets. Around the town center are the residential districts primarily concrete-panel high rises with adjacent transport infrastructure, schools, shops and gardens. Nowadays, along the coast, a string of low rising residential neighbourhoods is gradually emerging to allow the town a more typical seaside resort look. Well-defined pedestrian areas within town allow a non-motorised access to the central areas, via the seaside park and into the town beach. Public buses and trolleybus lines link the center to the residential areas.

Химическая и нефтеперерабатывающая промышленность является доминирующей. Она обеспечивает 84,5% всех доходов с тенденцией к увеличению. Объем долгосрочных материальных активов приблизительно 71% всей этой отрасли в Бургасской области. Основные представители химической промышленности – это “Лукойл Нефтохим” ЕАД и “Хемус” ООД. Пищевая и табачная промышленность – это вторая важная отрасль в экономической структуре. Есть еще мельницы, консервная промышленность, винодельческая и пивоваренная промышленность, производство мяса и молока. Здесь находится также единственная в стране фабрика по производству рыбных консервов. Электротехническая и электронная промышленность – это третья основная отрасль в экономической структуре. Представлена она в основном производством кабелей и инструментов. Станкостроение и производство металлов – это четвертая важная отрасль. Представлена судоремонтом и судостроением.

Инфраструктура и транспорт Город Бургас отличается типичными для болгарских городов инфраструктурой и планом застройки – в его центральной части сосредоточены основные административные здания и общественные заведения, культурные институты и торговые объекты, а в периферии – жилые районы с соответствующей инфраструктурой и местами для отдыха. Характерная особенность города то, что он обращен к морю. Старая часть Бургаса имеет форму полумесяца, обращенного к берегу. Она и Приморский парк являются основными аттракционами города. Поблизости расположены административные здания, центральная пешеходная зона и магазины, все культурные институты и большинство мест для развлечения и отдыха. Около городского центра находятся жилые районы – это в основном высокие панельные дома с прилежащей транспортной инфраструктурой, школами, магазинами и сквериками. Сегодня у самого берега строятся новые жилые районы с низкими домами, что придает городу вид типичного морского курорта. Хорошо оформленные пешеходные зоны предоставляют доступ к центральной части, через Приморский парк и к городскому пляжу, без необходимости пользования транспортным средством. Общественные автобусные и троллейбусные линии связывают центр с жилыми районами.

The main potentialities for tourism development in the area are: the beach resources, bioclimatic resources, wooden resources, mineral water, medical mud, protected natural territories. Burgas territory area includes attractive parts of East Balkan Mountains, the northern mountainspurs of Strandja mountain, NP “Strandja”, east parts of the Upper Thracian Plain, Burgas plain, etc. On the east there is the South Black Sea coast, which is attractive for tourism development. The region offers a combination of popular sea tourism, familiar routes, village, culture and eco tourism in one region with exceptional diversity of nature and anthropological tourist resources. The geographical location of the region is extremely good and the transportation to the main tourist places in the region is completely guaranteed by international airport, railway station, highway transport. The Black Sea municipalities have the best potential for tourism development and because of this fact, the developed tourist infrastructure, which served to the visitors, is concentrated mainly on their territory. The material base for the tourism is concentrated mainly in town territories and resorts on the seaside. On the seaside there are dominated resort complexes, private accommodations, family boarding-houses and holiday complexes. Places and resources for accommodation on the territory of the region are concentrated mainly on Black Sea seaside – in the resort complexes Sunny Beach, Elenite, Duni, MMZ - Primorsko, holiday town Lozenets, camping sites South, Oasis, Aralia, Nestinarka, Dolphin, Kavatsite. Together with the tourism and opportunities for holiday, Burgas region has various natural sights, cultural and historical monuments, authentic traditions and customs and hospitable people, which are important condition for tourism development. Really important for the development of different tourism practices is the availability of diverse of natural resources – sea, mountains, rivers, lakes. The region has many protected territories in the country. Here the biggest natural park in the country – Strandja is situated, which has an amazing and really diverse nature, also the only in the black Sea region salt-cellars, Sea-salt Museum, Wine Museum, places included in the list of UNESCO, opportunities for balneotherapy, territories with international importance.

В Бургасской области находятся привлекательные места в восточной части Балканских гор, на северных хребтах Странджанских гор, в природном парке «Странджа», в восточных частях Верхнефракийской низменности, в Бургасской равнине и др. На востоке находится южный черноморский берег, который привлекателен для развития туризма. Регион предлагает сочетание популярного морского туризма, знакомых дорог, сельский, культурный и экологический туризм с исключительным природным разнообразием и антропологическими туристическими ресурсами. Географическое положение региона исключительно благоприятное, и транспорт, с помощью которого можно добраться до основных туристических объектов, полностью гарантирован наличием международного аэропорта, железнодорожных связей и шоссейными дорогами. У черноморских муниципалитетов лучший потенциал для развития туризма, поэтому здесь существует сильно развитая инфраструктура, подходящая для туризма. Материальная база для туризма сконцентрирована в основном на территории города и на курортах, расположенных на черноморском берегу, где преобладают большие комплексы, возможности размещения в частных квартирах, в фамильных пансионатах и в туристических поселках. Места и ресурсы размещения на территории района, прежде всего, на черноморском берегу – в курортных комплексах «Солнечный берег», «Елените», «Дюны», ММЦ «Приморско», в курортном городке Лозенец, в кемпингах «Юг», «Оазис», «Аралия», «Нестинарка», «Дельфин», «Каваците». Наряду с туризмом и возможностями отдыха в Бургасском регионе есть и различные природные объекты, культурные и исторические памятники, аутентичные традиции и обычаи и гостеприимные люди, что является важным условием для развития туризма. Snacks (‘zakuska’) are available all over town in tiny shops or from stands on the street. banitsa - fillo dough pastry filled with white cheese gevrek - like a very dry bagel, sold from big bags on street corners kifla - croissant usually filled with jam pirozhka - dough stick filled with white cheese and fried. For the really adventurous, try: boza - a thick malt drink with a distinct smell. (It’s said to be an acquired taste!)

It is located in a former Jewish synagogue, which itself is a remarkable architectural monument that was built in beginning of 20th century by the Italian architect Ricardo Toscani. The exhibitions in the building are set up on three floors and comprise more than 2500 works of art, including paintings , sculptures and line art. One of the Art Gallery’s most valuable collection is an icon collection with exhibits dating back from the 15th to 20th centuries.

Cultural Centre Sea Casino

After Burgas Municipality announced a competition for a project of a casino in the city’s Sea Garden in the early 1930’s, the official opening of the landmark took place in 1938. Then, after more than 40 years, the Burgas Municipality launched a renovation of the building and now it is one of the most beautiful and visited places in the city. The renewed cultural center comprises various in size and shape modernly equipped halls, located on different levels. It is a venue for many concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, exhibitions, creative workshops and other art and cultural happenings. From the highest part of the building visitors can enjoy a magnificent panoramic 360-degree view of Bourgas bay.

Found in 1912, the Regional Historical Museum (RHM) in Burgas is the biggest museum in southeast Bulgaria. Until 1946 it was a private archaeological museum, but after that year was declared a People’s Museum of Burgas. In the recent years RHM is an active cultural and scientific institution which is a network comprising four major museum exhibitions: Archeological, Ethnographic, Historical and Nature&Science Exhibitions. They all are situated in four separate buildings in the city center. This year, from June 4, the museum offers all interested in the Bulgarian tradition to join in this year’s ethnographic workshop at Brakalov’s house (Burgas, 69 Slavyanska St). The participation in these ethnographic workshops will bring you close to the Bulgarian folk culture, to the games and handicrafts of Bulgarian ancestors: weaving on a tile or on a vertical loom, making rag dolls, pompons, tassels, necklaces and woven flowers, crochet and Bulgarian embroidery, sewing and decorating small bags. Each activity lasts 2 astronomical hours, which can be selected depending on the willingness of the participants and working time of each workshop. The cost of each activity is 7 LV/BGN. The price includes also a ticket for optional visit of one of the four expositions in RIM Burgas.

There are more than ten art galleries in Bourgas. The undisputed leader is the Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery. Its exhibition has been arranged in a former Jewish synagogue, now listed as a cultural monument. The Gallery holds works from all Bulgarian classics, some contemporary Bourgas painters, as well as a most extensive collection of icons from the region of Strandzha.

FESTIVALS

Bourgas is a well-known festival center in Bulgaria. Every summer the Seaside Park’s open-air theater houses the Bulgarian Popular Song Festival entitled Burgas and the Sea, acknowledged as an event at which musical hits are inevitably ‘born’ every time. The open-air theater also hosts the Annual Summer International Folklore Festival. At openair stages within the Seaside park are convened the Beer Fest, the Bulgarian Rock Music Festival Rock-Explosion, a Blues festival, the On the Beach Theater Festival, etc. In October of each year Bourgas hosts the Autumn Literature Days. Every few years the town becomes a venue for the Sea Week with an extensive cultural programme. Another traditional event is the Music Festival, held under the name of Emil Chakarov, the early deceased Bulgarian conductor, a pupil of Herbert von Karyan’s. Twice a year - in May and September, Bourgas turns into a paradise of flowers. The international exhibition and bazaar of Flora-Bourgas is held in the open, at specially erected pavilions in the Seaside Park. Bourgas’ patron saint is St. Nicolas the Wonder-maker. Every year, during the week preceding and following St. Nicolas Day (6th Dec), the town celebrations are held under the auspices of Bourgas Municipality, which find their natural extension in the Christmas holidays, which becomes the occasions for many cultural events.

MUSIC

Bourgas is a town of diverse musical history, and an even more diverse present. Here live and work the best selling Bulgarian female pop-singer, the most popular pop-group, and some of the highest awarded composers and musicians. It could be said, that apart from the capital of Sofia, Bourgas is the only Bulgarian town, which has managed to bring back and retain its own musical talents over the post-communist era. Concert gigs are particularly active over the summer season, when the sea becomes the main drawing point for culture and the Bulgarian bohemians.

OPERA AND CLASSICAL MUSIC

Bourgas is one of the few Bulgarian towns with an own opera and ballet theater. Its repertoire includes classical and Bulgarian works, as well as Operetta classics. The Bourgas Opera House, also used by the Philharmonic orchestra, has a vanguard design and excellent acoustics.

Фестивали

Бургас – известный фестивальный центр Болгарии. Каждое лето в Летнем театре в Приморском парке проводится Фестиваль болгарской популярной песни „Бургас и море”, на котором по всеобщему признанию всегда „рождаются” новые музыкальные хиты. Летний театр каждое лето является хозяином Международного фольклорного фестиваля. На летних сценах в Приморском парке проводится Пивной фестиваль, Музыкальный фестиваль болгарского рока „Рок эксплозия”, Фестиваль блюза, Театральный фестиваль „На берегу” и др. Каждый год в октябре Бургас является хозяином Осенних литературных дней. Город становится и центром Недели моря с богатой культурной программой. Другое традиционное событие – это Музыкальный фестиваль, названный в честь Емила Чакырова, нашего дирижера, который умер очень молодым и был учеником выдающегося Караяна. Два раза в году – в мае и сентябре, Бургас превращается в рай для цветов. Международная выставка – базар флоры Бургаса проводится под открытым небом, в специально сооруженных павильонах в Приморском парке. Св. Николай Чудотворец – патрон города Бургас. Каждый год на неделе, предшествующей дню Святого Николая (6 декабря) или на неделе после этого праздника проводятся городские торжества под эгидой Бургасского муниципалитета, которые находят свое естественное продолжение во время рождественских праздников, а они являются поводом многих культурных событий.

Музыка

Бургас – это город, у которого разнообразная музыкальная история и еще более разнообраное настоящее. Здесь живет и работает самая известная болгарская поп-певица-Тони Димитрова, самая популярная поп-група Тоника и некоторые из наиболее награждаемых композиторов и музыкантов. Можно сказать, что кроме столицы Бургас единственный болгарский город, в котором в посткоммунистическую эру его собственные музыкальные таланты не уехали из него, а остались в родном городе. Концертные постановки особенно активны летом, когда море становится притягательным местом для болгарской богемы.

Оперная и классическая музыка

Бургас один из немногих болгарских городов с собственным театром оперы и балета. Его репертуар включает классические и болгарские произведения, как и классическую оперетту. Здание Бургасской оперы, которое используется и Филармоническим оркестром, отличается авангардным дизайном и отличной акустикой.

The Adriana Budevska Drama Theatre is named after one of the best-known Bulgarian theater actresses. In its long history it has given to Bulgaria an invaluable array of names of great directors, actors and stage managers. The Bourgas theater is one of the town’s brightest symbols and part of its magic appeal. Theoretically the active season in Bourgas runs from October to May, but in practice it is an on-going affair all the year round, with a lot of the national cultural life events moving to the resort centers over the summer. The Bourgas theater runs shows both on its own stage, and on the stage of the Opera House. Touring shows are hosted by the halls of the Garrison Military Club and the Neftochim Cultural Home.

MUSEUMS

The ancient history and archaeological heritage discovered in the vicinity of today’s Burgas Municipality are presented at the Burgas Museum of Archaeology, while history from the Bulgarian Revival to-date can be followed at the History Museum. The diversity of national culture and way of life has been incorporated into the exhibition of the Ethnographic Museum. A chance to a get closer look at the beauty, specifics, and exceptional diversity of natural specimens within the region of Burgas is offered by the Nature and Science Museum.

SPORT

There are two stadiums as well. A local pride is the Lazur Stadium, which has 24,550 seats, 13,000 of which covered, a grassed up area and lighting that meet the world standard requirements. This in fact is the most modern sports complex facility in Bulgaria. Within it operate a gym, tennis courts, training halls, open-air training grounds and a hotel. Burgas has also two sports halls. The Izgrev [Sunrise] Hall is mainly suitable for holding team events. The Mladost [Youth] Hall is multifunctional and is also used for cultural events. It has been known to host some continental and world youth competitions. Every year it hosts rhythmic gymnastics and modern dance tournaments. Burgas is well-organised for amateur sports and fitness exercise. There are over ten fitness halls, well-equipped with the necessary facilities and specialist trainers. All services may be used on a subscription basis, either individually or as a family, in which case the price is a bargain. The swimming fans will find two 50-metre long swimming pools, as well as a warm sea from May to October. For the tennis lovers, there are three courts in town (an entry fee is charged). The favourite ones among them are the Seaside Park tennis courts, which offer the largest facility around with a combination of good surface, sea air and affordable prices. Joggers will find that the Seaside Park offers the ideal environment for running with a suitable climate (temperatures in Burgas rarely drop below 0ºC), well-maintained alleys, and nearness to the sea. There are also special alleys designed for cyclists. The park is a nice place for walks and socialising. During the season surfing and water skiing can be practiced in the Burgas bay.

Театр драмы имени Адрианы Будевской носит имя одной из самых известных болгарских театральных актрис. На протяжении своей истории он дал Болгарии бесценную плеяду имен больших режиссеров, актеров и постановщиков. Бургасский театр – один из самых ярких символов города и часть его магнетической сущности. Теоретически активный сезон в Бургасе с октября по май, но на самом деле он продолжается в течение всего года, потому что летом большая часть национальной культурной жизни переносится в курортные центры. Бургасский театр выступает с постановками, как на собственной сцене, так и на сцене оперы. Спектакли из других городов бывают в залах Гарнизонного военного клуба и Культурного дома „Нефтохимик”.

Музеи

Древнее исторического и археологическое наследие, открытое недалеко от сегодняшнего Бургасского муниципалитета, выставлено в булгасском Археологическом музее, а историю Болгарского возрождения до наших дней можно проследить в Историческом музее. Богатая национальная культура и быт – это тема экспозиции в Этнографическом музее. Возможность поднакомиться с красотой, спецификой и исключительным разнообразием природных видов в бургасском районе предлагает Природоведческий музей.

Спорт

Город располагает и двумя стадионами. Предметом гордости является стадион «Лазурь» на 24 550 мест, причем 13 000 из них под навесом. Футбольное поле и освещение отвечают мировым стандартным требованиям. В сущности, это самое современное спортивное сооружение в Болгарии. В нем функционируют: гимнастический зал, теннисный корт, тренировочные залы, поля для тренировок под открытым небом и отель. В Бургасе есть два спортивных зала. Зал «Изгрев» («Восход») подходящий, прежде всего для соревнований команд. Зал «Младост» («Молодость») многофункционален. Он используется также и для культурных мероприятий. Каждый год в нем организуются турниры по художественной гимнастике и спортивным танцам. Зал «Младост» многофункционален и оборудован для любительских видов спорта и фитнеса. Он хорошо обеспечен необходимыми сооружениями и специалистами. В нем есть более 10 фитнес-залов. Всеми услугами можно пользоваться по абонементу, индивидуально или с семьей, причем цена договаривается в зависимости от конкретного случая. Почитатели плавания найдут здесь два 50-метровых плавательных бассейна, как и теплое море с мая по октябрь. Для любителей тенниса в городе есть три корта (оплачивается входной билет). Самые любимые среди них – это теннисные корты в Приморском парке, которые представляют собой самое большое сооружение в окрестностях в сочетании с хорошим настилом, морским воздухом и приемлемыми ценами. Любители джогинга убедятся в том, что Приморский парк – это идеальное место для кросса с подходящим климатом (температуры в Бургасе редко падают ниже нуля), хорошими ухоженными аллеями и своим расположением близость к морю. Есть также специальные аллеи для велосипедистов. Парк приятное место для прогулок и встреч с друзьями. В высокий сезон в Бургасском заливе можно кататься на серфинге и водных лыжах.

IN T ERN A T I O N A L FOLKLORE FESTIVAL BURGAS August 18 - 22, 2014 The International Folklore Festival is organized by the Municipality of Burgas under the patronage of the mayor and its slogan is :”Let’s preserve the legacy of our ancestors and pass it to our children!”. Bulgarian and foreign folklore songs and dances, folk choirs and orchestras will be part of the programme of this so rich in cultural diversity event. International Folklore Festival will include concerts at the stage of the Summer Theatre - Burgas, also at open-air stages across the city. There will be festive shows and traditional crafts exhibits as well.

VIII Международный молодежный фестиваль искусств МузыСозополь 5-го - 11-го июля, 2014- I сессия 11-го - 15-го июля, 2014 - II сессия ММФИ “Музы” включает в себя различные виды искусства: танец, музыка, театр, изобразительное искусство, фотография, фокусы и цирковое искусство, боевые искусства и т. д. В фестивале принимают участие любые творческие коллективы и солисты из художественных школ, театральных студий, детских и молодежных центров в возрасте от 10 до 30 лет.

Международный фольклорный фестиваль БУРГАС 18 - 22 августа, 2014 Международный фольклорный фестиваль организован мэрией Бургаса под патронажем мэра под лозунгом “Сохраним наследие наших предков и передадим его нашим детям”. Со-организатором является Министерство культуры. В фестивале примут участие болгарские и иностранные народные песни и танцы, а также народные хоры и оркестры. В рамках Международного фольклорного фестиваля будут концерты на сцене Летнего театра - Бургас и на открытых сценах по всему городу. Предусматриваются праздничные показы и демонстрация традиционных ремесел.
