Welcome to one of the oldest European states with 6000-years old gold treasures, a center of ancient civilizations, a country that hosts the sanctuary of the mystical singer Orpheus and gave to the Slavonic people the Cyrillic alphabet. Bulgaria is the only one country in Europe that hasn’t changed its name since it was first established. The Bulgarian army has never lost a single flag in battle. The flag of Bulgaria is a tricolor consisting of three equal-sized horizontal bands of (from top to the bottom) white, green and red. It was first adopted after Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), where Bulgaria regained independence. The current flag was re-established with the 1991 Constitution of Bulgaria.

HISTORY The Bulgarian state was founded circa 681 as a union of the new-settled Proto-Bulgarians, of seven Slavonic tribes who have already settled this territory and with the inclusion of some smaller ethnical groups (Thracians and others). The state was ruled by its founder Khan Asparuh, the leader of the proto-Bulgarians and the first Bulgarian capital was Pliska. The Thracians were a tribal society who inhabited a vast area in Central and Southeastern Europe. They were well-known in the Ancient world for making filigree gold and silver jewelry. The great Homer described in his masterpiece Iliad a Thracian king, having “the biggest and the most handsome horses I have ever seen, /whiter than snow and swifter than the winds/and a chariot finely wrought with silver and gold.”
Important & significant events 681 – The Bulgarian state acquired political recognition from the Byzantine Empire. 718 – The Bulgarian Khan Tervel has stopped the Arabic invasion to European continent. 855 – The Cyrillic alphabet by the brothers Cyril and Methodius. It corresponded perfectly to the phonetic riches and needs of the SlavonicBulgarian language. As of today more than 250 million people in Europe and Asia use the Cyrillic alphabet for their national languages. 864 – During his rule Knyaz Boris I converted the state to Orthodox Christianity. 893-927 – During the Golden Age of Tzar Simeon The Greatest the First Bulgarian State stretched gradually from Transylvania in the north, to the Aegean Sea in the south, from the Black Sea in the east and to the Adriatic Sea in the west. At this time Bulgaria gradually reached its cultural and territorial apogee, when it developed into the cultural and literary center of Slavic Europe, as well as becoming one of the largest states in Europe. 1018 – The Bulgarian army fell to Byzantines and after that the Bulgaria State had been conquered by the Emperor Vassileios II.

6 Bulgaria in Brief 1185 – The Second Bulgarian State was established at Veliko Tarnovo, reinstated the borders of the First Bulgarian Kingdom and a second Golden Age began during which Bulgaria expanded its borders to the shores of Black, Aegean and Adriatic seas. 1396-1878 – The country was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. 1878 – Liberation from the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Establishment of the Third Bulgarian State. 1878-1879 – As the result of the Treaty of Berlin, the Bulgarian State was divided in two territories. An autonomous Principality of Bulgaria was created, between the Danube and the Stara Planina range, with its seat at the old Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo, and including Sofia. An autonomous Ottoman province under the name of Eastern Rumelia was created south of the Stara Planina range, whereas Macedonia was returned under the sovereignty of the Sultan. 06.09.1908 – The establishment of the Independence of Bulgaria. On that date Eastern Rumelia rejects the rule of Sultan and announced that joined the Principality of Bulgaria. Two days later, the Prince Alexander Battenberg First signed a manifesto to approve the accession of the field and taken to be titled as a future prince of Northern and Southern Bulgaria. 1944 – The After Communist Party, led by Georgi Dimitrov, took the power as a result of almost bloodless coup d’état and proclaimed Bulgaria for a “People’s Republic” in 1946 after a controversial referendum. 10.11.1989 – The Communist regime ended when Bulgaria peacefully ousted the Communist Party leader Todor Zhivkov. 1989 – The establishment of a multi-party system and the begging of the Bulgaria’s democratization. 12.07.1991 – The new Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria was adopted and it proclaimed the country as a parliamentary republic. 29.03.2004 – Bulgaria joined NATO. 01.01.2007 – The country became a member of the European Union.

St. Constantine and Elena is a beautiful resort located 8km from Varna and it is the oldest Bulgarian complex, named after the famous monastery. It offers the unique combination of sandy beaches, clean sea water, mountain air, mineral springs, balneology complexes and healing thermal baths. The landmarks include the Botanical Garden and the Eastern Orthodox monastery of St. Constantine and Helena where the visitors can stay. Albena Resort is located 30km north of Varna, built in 1969 and designed by Bulgarian architects. Albena is one of the purpose-built resorts on the Black Sea coast with unique architectural style. The stepped pyramid hotels allow rooms to have sea-facing views and maximum sunlight. Many of the hotels are situated on the beach itself, providing direct access to the beach and sea. Albena is a Blue Flag winning resort, famous for its 5km long and 150m wide beach with clean sand and warm sea water. The resort offers 43 modern hotels and first-class food, clubs and entertainment places, swimming pools, water skiing, jets, underwater fishing, yachting, surfing, tennis, horseback riding, diving school, mini - golf, beach volleyball, aerobics. The national park of Albena is an ideal place for walking and bicycle tours.There are many concerts, contests and yacht trips in the resort. Albena is connected by bus transport with such resorts as Balchik and Golden Sands and offers the so called “Little Train” in 2 different routes - a wonderful way to see the area. Balchik
is a small but very beautiful and romantic Bulgarian seaside town and resort located 45km north of Varna. With its white rocks, and houses, standing in tiers, it is a preferred place for rest and tourism by the people of art and culture.
The main sights of Balchik are the residence of the Romanian queen and the botanical gardens. The Palace, called Quiet Nest was used by Queen Maria - the wife of King Ferdinand and mother of the last king of Romania – Mikhai. The Residence, designed by the Italian architects Amerigo and Augustino was completed in 1931. The mix of architectural styles with the main building’s extravagant minaret and a Christian chapel, perfectly describes the queen’s desire to bring religions closer together. The complex consists of a number of residential villas - intended for the Queen’s guests, a smoking hall, a wine cellar, a monastery, a chapel and a park that is today a state-run botanical garden. These days many of the former royal villas and other buildings of the complex are reorganized inside and used to accommodate tourists. The Botanical Gardens contain a variety of fountains and ponds, watermills, thrones, hewn of stone. There one can find about 3,000 varieties of rare plant species from all over the world. Among the masterpieces of the art of the park design are the rose garden and the cactus garden which is the second largest cactus collection of Europe – over 250 different species. Later, the Residence was turned into museum.

10 Bulgaria in Brief Kavarna
is a small port town and it is one of the ancient places on the Black Sea coast. It is placed 64km northeast of Varna and 43 km south of the border with Romania. The town was founded in the 5th century BC by Ancient Greek colonists who settled on the Chirakman Plateau in the colony Byzone. These days you can find a resort complex with beautiful beach and fishing base. Three 18-hole golf courses, villas and marinas are being developed nearby. In Kavarna you can visit some of the culture places such as the Sea Display /small maritime museum/, The Town and The Ethnographic museums, the church “St. George”, „The Dormition of the Theotokos” church and the old fountains, situated along the valley to the port. The town became famous with the annual Rock Fest featuring famous rock bands as “Uriah Heep”, “Nazareth”, “Rainbow”, “Black Sabbath”, “Deep Purple” and many others. The landmark Cape Kaliakra is located just a few kilometers to the east and it is one of the most beautiful natural sights along the coast. The Kaliakra Cape Fortress is one of Bulgaria’s best cultural attractions. Bulgaria’s National Archaeological Reserve “Yailata” is located 18 km northeast of the town of Kavarna. It is a rocky coastal terrace towering 50-60 meters above the Black Sea level and it features archaeological and historical monuments from different periods. One should visit the small and romantic resort of Rusalka. The place occupies the coast of Taouk Liman - “Bay of Birds” in Turkish. There one can enjoy the natural mud-curative bath on the salt-water lake, the sun and the clear sea waters. Kavarna is connected to Varna and Balchik with the regular bus transport and private minibuses and taxis.
Durankulak
is located 100km north of Varna of and it is part of Shabla Municipality. The place is a great combination of history and nature. A necropolis rich in artifacts is placed in Durankulak’s lake proves the existence of ancient civilization on the north-west coast of the Black Sea. The coastal lake is a nature reserve of major international importance for the protection of rare plant and animal species. It is located on a migration route and provides a place for nesting and wintering of different migratory birds. The lake is separated from the sea by the beach strip. In the village one can see a cultural centre, a museum of local history, a small art gallery and a library. There are several monuments dedicated to the peasant revolt of 1900. The local Bulgarian Orthodox church was built in 1942.

В Каварне вы можете посетить некоторые из культурных объектов такие, как Экспозиция “Добруджа и море” / Малый морской музей/, городские и этнографические музеи, церковь Святого Георгия, церковь Успения Богородицы и старые фонтанчики, которые расположены вдоль причала. Дуранкулак
находится в 100 км к северу от Варны, административно он относится к муниципалитету Шабла. Место это является прекрасным сочетанием истории и природы. Некрополь, богатый артефактами, находится на озере Дурнакулак, доказывая существование древней цивилизации на северо-западном побережье Черного моря. Прибрежное озеро является природным заповедником с большим международным значением для сохранения редких видов растений и животных. Он расположен на пути миграции различных перелетных птиц, обеспечивая им место для гнездования и зимовки. Озеро отделено от моря песчаной косой. В селе можно посетить культурный центр, музей краеведения, небольшую художественную галерею и библиотеку. Там находятся и несколько памятников, посвященных крестьянскому восстанию 1900 года, местная болгарская православная церковь, построенная в 1942 году.

The town of Devnya is situated 25km west of Varna at the western shore of Lake Beloslav in the end of the Devnya Valley. Two rivers, Devnya and Provadiya, empty into the lake nearby. There are 30 karst springs used for water supply for Devnya, Varna and the local industries. One of the largest springs is open for visitors. Devnya is one of the centers of Bulgarian chemical industry.

Pliska
is the name of both the first capital of the First Bulgarian Empire and a small town situated 20 km northeast of the provincial capital Shumen. Under Ottoman rule, the village was called Aboba until 1925, when the name was changed to Pliskov - a variant of the current name. Pliska is an archaeological site in Bulgaria - housing the ruins of what was the country’s first capital. The ruins of the city of Pliska lie 3 km north of the modern village. The site of the city is currently a National Archaeological Reserve. Pliska was an impressive early medieval city. The stone architecture and the buildings from this era show a clear Byzantine influence in their design and function. It acted as the main city of the First Bulgarian Empire from 681 until 893, when the capital was moved to Preslav by Tsar Simeon I. Ruins of the Great and the Small Palace, the strong stone fortifications and the Great Basilica, used both as a royal church and as a national patriarchal cathedral, can be seen in Pliska.

THE AGE OF TSAR SIMEON COMES TO LIFE
Tsar Simeon I (893 – 927 AD) was one of the most erudite European rulers in the Middle Ages. The victories on the battlefield allowed him to strengthen the international authority of Bulgaria, leaving behind a powerful state. is located in the northeastern part of Bulgaria and reaches to the Black Sea. The region includes 12 municipalities.
Land
The landscape is dominated by hilly landforms. The climate is moderate continental, with Black Sea influence along the coastline. Inland rainfalls do not occur very often and summers usually see dry spells. The prevailing vegetation is deciduous. The area of Kamchia River mouth is a dense forest reserve with rare plant species being preserved.
People, Towns And Culture
The geographic distribution of the population is strongly uneven. The settlement agglomeration formed by Varna, Beloslav, Devnya and Provadia has concentrated over 75 percent of the residents in the region. The process of urbanization has been very active especially in the last 30 years and the urban-rural ratio is 82:18. The ethnic composition is as follows: 371 048 Bulgarians, 30 469 Turks, 13 432 Roma and 5 638 of other ethnic groups. Varna (population 334 870) is an ancient town of centuriesold traditions. Today it is a large industrial, transport and academic center, as well as an international sea tourism hot spot. The towns surrounding Varna- Beloslav, Devnya and Provadia have obtained in the last 50 years a typical industrial urban scenery and atmosphere, whereas Dolni Chiflik and Vulchi Dol are specialized in agriculture. 20 overview Symbols of Varna The Assumption of the Mother of God Cathedral
Situated on St. Cyril and St. Methodius square in Varna, The Cathedral of Holy Assumption is one of the main symbols of the city. It is named after the Russian Empress Maria Alexanrovna, benefactor of Bulgaria and aunt of the Prince. It is famous by its rich frescoes, the stained glasses and the roof construction enriched with a shade of gold and silver which symbolize the city. Address: 1, “Cyril and Methodius” Square
Orthodox Church “Sveta Paraskeva Petka” It is the only temple in the center of Varna that has not been destroyed. Its walls were icon-painted in early 1973 when most of the churches were not painted at all. The church was functioning even before its inauguration. Address: 36, “Georgi Rakovski” Str. Armenian Apostolic Church “Saint Sarkis” The Church Is located next to the Shishkova Garden in downtown Varna. Interesting fact is that from flight sight the temple has the shape of a cross with a multiwall pyramid- dome, the common style of the Armenian churches. Address: 15, “Han Asparuh” Str. Aziziye Mosque The Aziziye Mosque is located next to the Boteva Garden in Varna. It was built in 1869 and today it is an acting Muslim temple. The “Saint Archangel Michael” Church The temple is located in the building of the first Bulgarian school, opened in July 1862. Aladzha Monastery
“St. Athanasius” church The church “St. Athanasius” was built in 1838 and it is situated near the Roman Baths in Varna. A peculiarity of the temple is that there are no domes but despite that fact it has exceptional good acoustics. Address: 19, “ Graf Ignatiev” Str.
Alazadha Monastery is located 17 km north-east of Varna and it is the most famous medieval cave monastery and interesting destination on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The name of the temple means “motley, bright” but its Christian name is yet unknown. The monastery caves are hewn on two levels into an almost 40mhigh limestone rock. The Palace of Culture and Sports is complex with 6 training and competition halls, recreation center, two gyms, press conference center, and modern shopping and business center. Drama Theatre “Stoyan Buchvarov” Varna is founded in 1921, finished in 1932 and occupies a historic building in the center of the city. It is named after the famous theatre actor Stoyan Bachvarov and it maintained 14 titles, 6 with premiere each month for their salons with 3,500 viewers. Drama Theatre - Varna accepts the current trends in art and the constant staff counts 22 of talented actors. Varna Theatre is hosting the International Theatre Festival “Varna Summer in June. Varna Open Air Theatre Varna is located in the central part of the Sea Garden. In the summer it hosts many national and international events, such as Opera in the Summer Theatre, Varna Summer Festival and various music concerts. Museum, the Aquarium (with a unique exhibition of water organisms – mainly Black Sea, freshwater and tropical fish species), the Astronomical Observatory and the Planetarium which organizes observation sessions for its visitors, the Dolphinarium with an amusing show where the main stars are the most intelligent water creatures on Earth-the dolphins, etc.
Further from the center, a granite monument commemorates the Battle of Varna, which took place in 1444. Here 30,000 Crusaders were waiting to sail to Constantinople when they were attacked by 120,000 Turks. The Polish King Ladislas was killed in a bold attempt to capture the Ottoman Sultan Murad. After his heroic death the nickname Varnenchik was attached to his given name. The subsequent retreat foreshadowed Christendom’s general retreat before the advancing Ottomans.
The Sea Garden The Sea Garden is Varna’s largest, oldest and best known park, also said to be the largest landscaped park in the Balkans. It is located along the city’s coast, next to the center and it is important attraction and a national monument of landscape architecture. There you can visit the Natural Science Museum, the Naval Museum, the Copernicus Astronomy Complex planetarium, the Zoo and the Terrarium. Thermae The 2nd century thermae (warm baths) are the main part of the remains of the largest Roman public building in Bulgaria. During this century a large part of this historical site has been revealed by the archaeologists. The singing fountain on Independence square in Varna is the tallest fountain in Bulgaria with its impressive water jet of 41m height and beautiful combination of lighting and sounds. The water landmark includes 400 LED lights, 52 water pumps and a modern computer system. This incredible show, created by more than 2, 000 color combinations, spectacular water jets and alltime music hits, became a favorite attraction for all the people in Varna, both residents and tourists. Residence Euxinograd The Residence of Euxinograd is located on the Black Sea, 8 km north of Varna and it is one of the finest examples of post-Liberation architecture in Bulgaria. The complex includes palace and park and used to be a royal summer residence for the monarchs Alexander Battenberg, Ferdinand and Boris III. The remarkable palace in Bulgarian Revival style includes winery, offices, two underground levels, a household wing, a laboratory, a bottling workshop and a degustation room. The area is surrounded by vineyards. The park of Euxinograd Residence occupies over 500 acres of land and it is one beautiful home to over 300 species of plants from France, Asia, Africa and America in a combination of English and French styles. It has two bridges and a small lake full of lilies and figures of bronze sculpture of Neptune. Pobitite kamani Pobitite kamani known also under the Turkish name “Dikilitas” is an exceptionally rare geological phenomenon not only for the Bulgarian lands but also for the entire continent. There are many rare plants and animals at that place. Pobitite Kamani are only 18 km west of Varna, next to the Hemus highway. The Eco Park is also called “The University Botanic Garden” and offers the beautiful view of exotic plants from the whole world like sea oaks, roses, tulips, ginkgo biloba, evergreen oak and many others. The Wonderful Rocks This landmark is just 80 km away from Sunny Beach and Nessebar. It consists of rock cones and pyramids reaching 40 -50m of height. The rocks can be reached by foot after 5-10 minute walk from the place you can leave your car. The lake near the place is great for fishing.

The preselected passages from contemporary European authors are read simultaneously in each city every half an hour from 18:00 to 22:00 h.

11.05 - 14.05 Since 1967 the competition is conducted under the name May choir festival. After the year 1989 the main organizer is the Municipality of Varna with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture, the Bulgarian choir union, Union of the Bulgarian composers. Since 1973 it has become famous as International Choir Competition. The competition is member of the International association who bestow The Big European prize for choir singing – “Grand Prix Europe”, that takes place consecutively in Arezzo (Italy), Debrecen (Hungary), Tour (France), Varna (Bulgaria), Tolosa (Spain) and Maribor (Slovenia). The events take place in the Festival and Congress center.

The initiative will include museums, a large number of galleries, creative spaces, restaurants.

The National Ballet OF SPAIN 14th of June 2017 at 19:30 Palace of Culture and Sports The National Ballet was founded by the Ministry of Culture in 1978, under the direction of Antonio Gades. Throughout the years, it has evolved to meet the times, interpreting highly diverse choreographies for flamenco, stylised Spanish dance or the Bolera School, among others. The institutions works excel in the coexistence of traditional and modern styles. The Spanish National Ballet also maintains an active commitment to education. Some of its directors have been Antonio Ruiz Soler, María de Ávila, José Antonio, Aída Gómez and Elvira Andrés. The success of its performances has brought the ballet to interpret in the most prestigious theatres worldwide, with emblematic works such as “Medea” by José Granero, “El Concierto de Aranjuez” by Pilar López or “Fuenteovejuna” by Antonio Gades. Furthermore, the Spanish National Ballet is widely acclaimed by both critics and the public, obtaining numerous awards.

The Georgian National Ballet has been represented by world’s many well-known impresarios and companies. The Georgian National Ballet has appeared at the Albert Hall, The Coliseum, The Metropolitan Opera, Madison Square, and dozens of famous venues. In 1967, La Scala welcomed them - it is the first and the only time a folklore group was given a chance to perform there. The curtain was lifted 14 times, wich is a record.

Art Gallery Le Papillon is located in the cultural center of Varna in its pedestrian area. It presents a special selection of talented Bulgarian artists of different generations and expression - painting, graphics, sculptures, as well as a permanent exhibition of author’s jewelry. In the gallery you can find works of young talents as well as of already established and proven artists - the majority of them are well known, recognized outside the country, including artists who rarely can be seen in Bulgarian galleries. Various solo and group exhibitions are presented each month in the Art Gallery Le Papillon’s exhibition hall. Priority in the selection of authors is the presentation of the most comprehensive Bulgarian art in the present.

ON THE OPEN STAGE IN THE BEGINNING OF MAY The Barber of Seville May 4, 19:00, Main Stage The most famous barber of Seville, immortalized in the music of Joaquinino Rossini, will be in the salon (understand Main Stage) on May 4 at 19:00. The production of the Italian team, directed by Antonio Petris, stage designer Greta Podesta, costume designer Salvatore Rousseau and choreographer Giuseppe Parenta, experienced his emotional premiere in 2012 and until now he retains his place in the top repertoire titles of the Varna Opera Theater. This is the fifth production in Varna of this great work, and the historical reference shows that for the first time in Varna “The Seville Barber” was played in 1950 under the direction of Petar Raychev - the first world-famous Bulgarian tenor, founder and first chief artistic director of Varna Opera House. This year we celebrate 130 years since his birth and 70 years since the opening of Varna Opera.

Under the direction of Gancho Ganchev, with the participation of the irreplaceable Stratsimir Pavlov, Valeri Tsenkov, Toni Ricev and the great soloists Antoanella Petrova, Ilina Mihaylova, Zvezdimir Keremedchiev and Neicho Petrov - Reggie, as well as with the orchestra and choir of Varna State Opera, the vocal group of Foriya University and the choir of the Varna Children’s and Adolescent Opera.
The 26th International Discovery Music Festival 2017 “Discovery” Music Festival is one of the few preserved Bulgarian and European festivals for international expression of young comrades, arrangers, songwriters and performers of contemporary pop and rock music. The 26th International Discovery Music Festival will be held on May 14th at 19:00 in “Stoyan Bachvarov” Drama Theatre. The audience will have the opportunity to see part of the “Stars of Discovery” - winners of song and performer contests in previous festival editions and some new and young talents. At the gala evening one will see Olawumi (UK), Bobi Mojsovski (Macedonia), „Mania“ duet, Dessy Dobreva, Janice (Malta), Olga Gornichar (Belarus), Stefan Mitrov, Yagmur Koroglu (Turkey). In its accompanying program “Discovering 2017” will again offer the presentation of music movies and books.
CULTURE 45 Varna’s finest Neicho Petrov - Reggie is a talented young artist and performer who lives and works in the city of Varna. His styles are jazz, funk, soul, R & B, bossa nova blues and ethno. Well-known with his sophisticated style at the club scene, he earned the admiration of the audience also with his performances in the opera. He has been actively involved in the creation of numerous musical projects such as REJOIN, Out-Of-The-Box and GO + SPELL along with many famous musicians in Varna. Neicho Petrov won the award for a young and creative performer with his song “Say” at one of the most famous contests “Golden Spring”. Today, he is one of the best and most respected artists on the Bulgarian stage, with many fresh and ambitious projects. Here’s what he told us: *What Varna means to you? Well, Varna is a great place to be for sure! Although it’s not my hometown, it feels like it is. Especially in the summertime - the sun, the sea, the beach and all the life that’s growing. It’s a perfect place for various events also - many beautiful places to perform, great artists. I would say it’s becoming a culture-friendly environment! *You decide to stay and work in Varna, why so? I started my professional career in Varna, a matter of circumstances at first. After while I just met the right people to make music with. Stunning proffessionalists, skilled artists and amazing friends. Varna had the potential for cultural development and we’ve been trying to accomplish that ever since. Maybe it’s love for the city. You name it! :) *Do you see the progress in the culture in Bulgaria and especially in Varna? I think there is, but it’s still kind of
underground. What I mean is mainstream culture in Bulgaria does not develop any signifficant level, something good artists in general want to reach. There are amazing ones, musicians for example, who aren’t the most popular in our country but they stand for world-class. Culture has to grow! It has to progress, to be innovative, to provoke. And that’s made by people, by artists, by consumers, by government - all togehther! It is a politic! In Varna, I think there is a signifficant change for the past 10 years. Lots of people united for this idea. Slowly but surely. *What would you say to people, who live here? If you want Varna to become a better place you have to act! Think out of the box, be creative, persue your goals, work hard, don’t be negative and try to smile more often! Any change comes within us first! And support local cultural products! *And what you would say to people who visit Varna for the first time? You’re gonna like it here!It is beautiful-the view, the calming sea, lots of interesting, warm people, gorgeous places to be - art spots, nature and historical ones, as well as clubs, restaurants and rich cultural life.
