Location and Territory Bulgaria is located in South-Eastern Europe and occupies the Eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. To the North the country borders with Romania via the Danube River, to the East it touches the Black Sea, its southern neighbors are Turkey and Greece and to the West it borders with the Republics of Macedonia and Serbia. The total territory of the country is 110 993 sq. km and Bulgaria ranks 15th in size among the other European countries.
History
The Bulgarian state was founded circa 681 as a union of the new-settled Proto-Bulgarians, of seven Slavonic tribes that were already settled in this territory and with the inclusion of some smaller ethnical groups (Thracians and others). The Thracians were a tribal society who inhabited a vast area in Central and Southeastern Europe. They were well-known in the Ancient world for making filigree gold and silver jewelry. The great Homer described in his masterpiece Iliad a Thracian king, having “the biggest and the most handsome horses I have ever seen, /whiter than snow and swifter than the winds/and a chariot finely wrought with silver and gold.” The newly established state acquired political recognition from the Byzantine Empire in 681 A.D. The state was ruled by its founder Khan Asparuh, the leader of the proto-Bulgarians and the first Bulgarian capital was Pliska. During that period the Slavic alphabet was created in 855. It was called Cyrillic alphabet, named after St. Cyril, and corresponded perfectly to the phonetic riches and needs of the Slavonic-Bulgarian language. As of today more than 250 million people in Europe and Asia use the Cyrillic alphabet for their national languages and half of them are from Russia. With the accession of Bulgaria to the EU, the Cyrillic alphabet became the third official language in the union.

Bulgaria in Brief 5
6 Bulgaria in Brief Another major historical landmark took place in this period when Knyaz Boris I converted the state to Orthodox Christianity in 864. The First Bulgarian State stretched gradually from Transylvania in the north, to the Aegean Sea in the south, from the Black Sea in the east and to the Adriatic Sea in the west. It fell to the Byzantines in 1018, after it had been conquered by the Emperor Vassileios II. The Second Bulgarian State, established in 1185 at Veliko Tarnovo, reinstated the borders of the First Bulgarian Kingdom and a second Golden Age began during which Bulgaria expanded its borders to the shores of Black, Aegean and Adriatic seas. From 1396 to 1878 the country was under the rule (the so called ‘yoke’) of the Ottoman Empire. Sofia became the capital of Bulgaria after the Veliko Tarnovo Constitution was accepted in 1879. From 1878 (liberation from the rule of the Ottoman Empire) to 1944, Bulgaria enjoyed a brief but unstable period of relative freedom. After 1944 the Communist Party, led by its leader Georgi Dimitrov, took the power as a result of almost bloodless coup d’état and proclaimed Bulgaria for a “People’s Republic” in 1946 after a controversial referendum. The Communist regime lasted until November 10th, 1989 when Bulgaria peacefully ousted the Communist Party leader Todor Zhivkov. One of the first signs of Bulgaria’s democratization after 1989 was the establishment of a multi-party system. The new Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria, adopted on July 12, 1991, proclaimed the country as a parliamentary republic. On March 29, 2004 Bulgaria joined NATO, and on January 1st, 2007 the country became a member of the European Union.
Religion A full freedom of the religious denominations is proclaimed in the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria. According to the census from 2011, 76% of the population are Eastern Orthodox Christians, 10 % are Muslims, 0.8% - Catholics, 1.1% are Protestants and 0,2 % belong to other religions.
National Holidays 1 January – New Year’s Day 3 March – National Holiday /The liberation of the Bulgarian land from the Ottoman Empire is celebrated on this day/ 1 May – Labour and International Worker’s Solidarity Day 6 May – St. George’s Day (Gergyovden) and the Bulgarian Army’s Day 24 May – Bulgarian Education, Culture and Cyrillic Alphabet Day 6 September – Unification Day 22 September – Independence Day 1 November – Day of the Bulgarian Enlighteners (Holiday for all educational institutions) 24 December - Christmas Eve 25, 26 December – Christmas Days

8 Bulgaria in Brief Monthly Holidays 8th – November – St. Archangel Mihail’s Celebration In folk beliefs human’s soul can be celebrated from the body, if only St. Archangel comes and takes it. He is called a tormentor because he harasses human’s soul. This day is celebrated in honour of the death for the man to be at ease when his life is harassed. In many places on this day a sacrafice is made for the Saint. Ritual table includes ritual bread, red wine and mutton. The oldest in the house breaks the bread in the form of a cross, sprays it with some wine and blesses the family. Corn is handed which everybody takes in pairs for the year to be bounteous and he or she utters: “As much are the grains, as many are the bowls and health.”. On this day is the Archangel’s service for the dead – one of the biggest during the year. Official service is carried out in the church. Name day celebrate all those called Angel, Angelina, Mila, Milka, Mihail, Michaela, Rangel, Rayna.
6th December – St. Nicholaus St. Nicholaus is among the few saints commemorated in both the Eastern and Western beliefs. For many children from the northern countries he is associated with the giftgiving figure of Santa Clause. Every year on 6th December the Bulgarian Orthodox Church holds a festive liturgy devoted to St. Nicholaus during which ritual loaves of bread, fish and wine are sanctified. St. Nicholaus is considered to be the patron saint of sailors, fishermen, merchants and pawnbrokers. He is also regarded as the protector of children. According to old legends he is the one who stirs up the sea storms and hurricanes. For this reason all sailing boats stay at peace on this day. Even today fishermen believe that the observance of this feast day protects people from drowning. Name day celebrate all those called Nikolay, Nikolina, Nikola.
30th – November – Andreevden According to the calendar it is considered the beggining of the winter holiday cycle. It is connected with the belief that the day starts to grow like a millet grain from this day on and the sun starts to move like a chicken in an egg. The day is celebrated in honour of the bear. Corn, which is left in water over the night, is boiled in a cauldron early in the morning on this day. The boiled corn is tossed up into the chimney and people say: “Bear, take that boiled corn so that you will not eat the raw one, the cattle and the people!”. They also put in the cauldron a few grains from everything that is soughed in the field and in the garden: beans, lentilsm millet, wheat, barley, oats and etc. This is done so that everything that is soughed grows big. Ritual table includes boiled wheat and beans grains, fresh bread. Name day celebrate all those called Andrey, Andrian, Andriana, Andrea.
20th December – St. Ignatius Long time ago, the New Year was celebrated on St. Ignatuis Day. Nowadays this day marks the beginning of the Christmas festivities. From St. Ignatuis Day till Christmas, Christians would observe a strict fast,
Bulgaria in Brief 9 excluding even vegetable oil from their diet. On 20th December we should not welcome into our houses people with evil intentions otherwise we will be steeped in unhappiness throughout the forthcoming year. However it is considered a good sign if a domestic animal enters your home. We should not go on a visit empty-handed, nor lend money on that day. Under no circumstances should parents reproach their children. If that happens, they will be in constant conflict during the New Year. Name day celebrate all those called Ignat.
Tips and Features About Bulgarians One unique feature is that Bulgarians most often nod for ‘no’ and shake their heads for ‘yes’. It can lead to a funny confusion. It is common courtesy to take flowers when invited to someone’s home. These should be an odd number ( i.e. 3, 5 or 7 stems). The even numbers (2, 4 or 6 stems) are taken only at funerals. If you are invited on a Birthday party it is expected to bring a present for the host. He will make sure that there is enough food and drinks for everyone and will treat you as a very important guest.
24th December – Christmas Eve The night before Christ’s Nativity is a family celebration. Everything put on the table symbolizes fertility and prosperity. Bread takes place of honor – large, beautiful, with the lucky coin hidden inside, it “speaks” of wealth. Rakiya and red wine are drunk. Only vegetarian dishes are served, mostly pulses – and an odd number of those as a rule. The night of new beginnings and bright expectations is connected with fortune-telling for personal happiness and fertility. Name day celebrate all those called Evgeni, Evgenia, Bozhan, Bozhana, Biser and Bistra. 25th December – Christmas Day, the birth of Christ Christmas is an official holiday in Bulgaria and the whole family is at home to celebrate the birth of Christ - a symbol of the never-failing hope for salvation of human soul. The aroma of magnificently decorated fir-trees permeates the air, children are impatient to receive their presents and housewives are busy preparing many culinary surprises. According to the tradition, as of midnight a group of people, called “koledari”, go from house to house and sing Christmas songs to the hosts, who in return give them walnuts and sweeties. Name day celebrate all those called Hristo, Hristina, Kristian and Kristiana. 1st January – St. Vasily According to tradition, on the first day of the year people honour St. Vasily. Early in the morning young boys called “sourvakari” perform rituals for good health and rich harvest. They go from house to house wishing people a Happy New Year. On December 31st, maidens put their “kasmeti” (fortune slips) in a copper pot. On January 1st, they gather and start drawing the slips predicting who will get married and who will give birth in the following year. As a ritual, the young girls sing carols and perform a traditional dance called “Vasilino horo”. Those named Vasil and Vasilka celebrate their name day on January 1st.
Bulgarians are quite a hospitable nation and they will lay a plenty of food on the table for you. Do your best not to leave anything on your plate or you will hurt your hostess. If your hosts have young children, remember to bring a bar of chocolate or some treats for them. Homemade “rakia” – A type of high-grade liquor is a magic drink no one can resist. If you are invited to a Bulgarian home, your host will proudly offer you some aged „slivovitza“ (plum rakia) or „grozdanka“ (made of grapes). The very first glass is certain to raise your spirit but after the third one you may have a splitting headache on the next day. „Drink in moderation” is a recommendation left to everyone’s best judgment. Prices in shops and markets are fixed do not try to bargain it usually is not taken good from the stuff but negotiations are acceptable at antique shops and bazaars, also when you buy a second hand car or a house. Tipping in a restaurant is expected – around 10-15%, even when the service has been dire. Taxi drivers expect a tip too, in the same percentages. Smoking is permitted at the restaurants. Usually they have a smoking area for their customers. It is allowed to smoke in open public areas. Drinking in public spaces is also acceptable in consideration to not violate the public order and tranquility. Parks are not locked during the night and they become an alternative party space during the summer. If you follow the last advice and had a great night with friends in park or in music club Bulgarians have their own solution for the hangover on the next day – try to have “shkembe chorba” for a breakfast or drink “sauerkraut juice”– it helped to decades of people.

14 overview VARNA CITY AND BEACH RESORT
Apart from being a significant beach resort, Varna rivals the great cities of Sofia and Plovdiv, in its abundance of cultural attractions and historical landmarks, buildings, museums and art galleries. It also provides access to some of the quieter scenic spots along the seashore, including the nature reserve of Kamchia, the royal palace of Balchik and the hillside Monastery of Aladzha (open every day from 09.00 till 18.00, phone: 052 355 460). Varna is an ’around-the-year’ holiday destination. Beyond the high season its balneotherapy facilities can help you unwind, relax and enjoy the many natural sights and sounds in peace. Seaside Park - this is the biggest park in Varna, situated by the beach. Its construction was commenced in 1878. Within the park area one can find the Seaside Baths, the Naval Museum, the Natural Science Museum, the Aquarium (with a unique exhibition of water organisms – mainly Black Sea, freshwater and tropical fish species), the Astronomical Observatory and the Planetarium which organizes observation sessions for its visitors, the Dolphinarium with an amusing show where the main stars are the most intelligent water creatures on Earththe dolphins, etc. The Church of the Assumption - this church is the second largest one in Bulgaria after St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. The imposing temple was erected in 1884-1886 by the master builder Gencho Kunev in honour of the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke. The Church of the Assumption is declared monument of culture of national significance and impresses with its modern Byzantine architecture, spacious interior, woodcarver iconostasis by masters belonging to the school of Debur and stained glass. The church was painted in 1949-1950. The 2nd century thermae (warm baths) are the main part of the remains of the largest Roman public building in Bulgaria. During this century a large part of this historical site has been revealed by the archaeologists. Thus a very thorough and exact description of this important landmark has been achieved, though some parts of the building remain hidden under the streets nearby. Coming across an extensive ancient building amidst the streets and houses of a modern city is not unusual in Bulgaria, but it is always a delight. Further from the center, a granite monument commemorates the Battle of Varna, which took place in 1444. Here 30,000 Crusaders were waiting to sail to Constantinople when they were attacked by 120,000 Turks. The Polish King Ladislas was killed in a bold attempt to capture the Ottoman Sultan Murad. After his heroic death the nickname Varnenchik was attached to his given name. The subsequent retreat foreshadowed Christendom’s general retreat before the advancing Ottomans.

It is the first official Bulgarian Black Sea Resort and is one of the best known and most beautiful of our resorts. The first holiday facilities here were built in the 1908. The resort is only 8 km away from Varna and situated in an old deciduous forest, reaching almost all the way to the sea, perched on a natural terrace above the sea, 10 - 15 m high. The main natural resources of the resort are: • Mild climate - temperatures during the season ranging from 23º C to 35º C • 3,5 km of natural beaches with fine-grained sand • 7 mineral springs with temperatures of 40 - 60º C with total capacity of 175 l/sec • River bisecting the entire resort in East - West direction and flowing into the Black Sea • Location in a wooded area which saves the tourists from the summer heat. The trend is for the greenery to cover at least 3/4 of the area.
overview 17 Golden SANDS Location
Located in a picturesque and environmentally - clean bay in the Northern part of the Black Sea coast, only 18 km separate the Golden Sands Resort from Varna. It is located in Golden Sands Nature Park, 277 m above sea level on an area of over 1320 hectares. It was declared a protected territory in 1943. Golden Sands tourist complex covers a territory of 177,13 hectares. Thus the larger part of the park is preserved in its natural state, untouched by human hand. The proximity of the sea, the mild climate and the sea breeze have influenced strongly the flora and fauna in the park, which is why it differs greatly from the other national parks. The thick deciduous forest with entwined creeping plants in places gently descends to the seacoast. Among this magnificent greenery nestle over 100 hotels. There are many eating, sports and entertainment facilities, not only along the beach but also in the beautiful woods. The golden beach starts right in the foot of the forest. The resort also boasts a number of healing mineral springs. Golden Sands is the winner of a Blue Flag - a prestigious international award for environmentally clean resorts. The major microbiological, physical and chemical readings of the atmosphere, sea and sand are monitored monthly. Within the resort, several types of transportation are at the disposal of the guests: velorikshaws, bicycles, minitrains, and solar-battery powered taxies.

ALBENA Located between the Batova River, the Black Sea and the slopes of the Dobrudja plateau, ALBENA Resort Complex is only 36km north of Varna and 11km south of Balchik. The unique nature of the region has attracted settlers here from ancient times. Historical data indicate that as early as 2 or 3 century AD a fortified settlement called Geraneia was founded here. In the early 1960s, the level coastline, the wide sand strip, the favorable climate and the exotic vegetation of the area were deemed suitable for the development of national and international tourism in Bulgaria. The six-kilometer long beach line, 150 m wide, is conducive to a family sea holiday and unforgettable fun in the sun.

BALCHIK What To See And Do The Palace (phone: 0579/2559, 2 kilometers - west of town) - Queen Marie of Romania had this Italiandesigned palace villa built in 1924 and summered here from 1931-38 when the Dobrudzha was part of Romania (1913-40). The Quiet Nest as it was known was supposedly also a love nest for the 60-yearold monarch and her 20-year old Turkish lover, Hasan. Marie belonged to a sect whose aim was the reconciliation of the Christian and Muslim religions and she apparently practiced what she preached. The villa architecture is primarily oriental, but includes old Bulgarian and gothic styles as well. The botanical gardens were begun in 1955 by horticulturist Daki Yordanov, remembered by an attractive caretaker-cottage just inside the main entrance. In the past, 3000 species of plants graced the extensive grounds, including many white poplar - some over 300 years old - and 1000 cacti, the second largest such collection in Europe. Some 450 botanical gardens worldwide contributed to the collection. Revival Complex (4 Hristo Botev Str., phone: 05792177; off-season, contact the museum for access) - This National Revival-style house, rebuilt in its entirety in the 1980’s, contains a one-room mutual school that functioned until 1909. History Museum (3 Vitosha Str., phone: 05792177, daily 08.00 - 12.00 and 12.30 - 17.30) Ethnographic Museum (opposite the history museum, same hours) - The exhibits in this authentic 1860 house are as diverse as those across the street.
