PUBLISHER’S NOTE
LIFE ABOUNDS WITH
SWEET MOMENTS ... IF ONLY YOU ARE NOT TOO BUSY TO NOTICE.
If
there is one thing I miss about my childhood in Italy, it is living life as if it were a holiday. When was the last time you lived life like this? Yes, going to work and looking after your kids and your parents, all the while trying to fulfill all the other 88 things on your to-do-list, can make this type of lifestyle unattainable.
We too often live life to the speed of a Ferrari. Yet life would be more enjoyable and rewarding if we were to cruise in a Fiat 500. How can you enjoy the sights and sounds of what makes your existence so unique and special if you do not take some time to take in all its beauty?
‘‘
Makeup artist Dee Daly applies some finishing touches to Lisa Ray’s already pristine complexion.
Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.
’’
– Sophia Loren
I couldn’t help but take a photo of the cluttered makeup table.
A true testament to this mantra was Giuseppe Ruscica, a hard-working man who was never too busy to listen or lend a helping hand. On behalf of his memory, The Giuseppe Ruscica Endowment Fund was set-up to raise generosity towards The Patient Amenities Fund at the Hospital for Sick Children. Ask those who met Ruscica and they will explain how he always knew how to have fun and celebrate life. Our cover star is yet another person that defies definition. How would you describe her decision to fight head-on in her predicament and come out a ‘cancer graduate’ and a teacher of why we need to fight for our lives with everything we have – and more? I loved Lisa Ray’s energy and radiant inner beauty in her quiet and almost private way. A big shock came a few days later when she called to tell me that she had a surprise for me. She had managed to get Kabir Bedi – an actor I revered as a child – on the phone. This world-renowned actor was somewhat of a James Bond in Italy during the ’80s, appearing in films and in the Sandokan series. Hearing his voice was a great joy for me, and yet another example of Lisa’s big heart. Sweet moments are indeed everywhere. The trick is to take note of them. A list of home décor specialists (see page 20 – 26 and 52 – 56) can first set the foundation of sweetness in your own home, so you won’t have to leave town. To think sweet memories abound only when we are holidaying would be a mistake – they begin in our backyards. We hope you enjoy the latest issue of City Life Magazine.
As the photo shoot comes to an end, the always-radiant Ray and I pose together for one last shot, while I also promise to do more yoga.

Fema had a front tooth that was falling out from gum disease. Her gums were infected and extensive bone loss was present. Using the new technologies of guided tissue regeneration, Dr. Sclodnick reconstructed the bone of her upper front jaw. Once healed, implants and implant-supported crowns were fabricated.

CORRECTION In the April/May issue of City Life Magazine, an article on Vivian Risi and the Yellow Brick House titled “Aiming Higher” misstated York Region to be the location as to where there have been no abuse shelters for women and children up until now, when in fact, it is specifically the town of Markham in York Region. York Region currently offers three shelters that assist abused women and children. Apart from Yellow Brick House, ETA Vaughan (Empowerment Through Achievement) Women’s Shelter, and Sandgate Women’s Shelter of York Region, are committed to sheltering, counselling and supporting women and children of abuse. A shelter alerted City Life to the error on April 21, 2011. www.etavaughan.com www.sandgate.ca www.yellowbrickhouse.org

We had the exclusive privilege of walking the pit lanes, exploring the Red Bull Racing garages and listening in on Sebastian Vettel as he chatted with engineers,” says Dolce Vita Magazine’s publisher, Fernando Zerillo. ANDREW Q&A WITH BOCKNER Q: What’s one feature of outdoor furniture customers should always keep in mind?
The Backyard BROTHERS :ULWWHQ %\ 0LFKDHO +LOO
If
summertime barbeques and backyard parties are on your menu, don’t just settle for the traditional passé plastic of big box store furniture – add some style and comfort. And where better to liven up your alfresco living space than at Andrew Richard Designs (ARD). Founded by brothers Andrew and Richard Bockner, the team at ARD feels backyards and patios are extensions of the home and should create the same comfortable feelings as any other room in your dwelling. “It’s about lounging and enjoying it, having the space to do so, letting your mind go, distressing and relaxing. That’s what I believe outdoor living is about,” says Andrew Bockner. Striving to refurnish dated outdoor memes, Bockner crafts furniture for the modern individual who craves tranquil feelings from their outdoor seating.
20 City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011
Brothers Richard (right) and Andrew (left) Bockner founded Andrew Richard Designs in 2005.
A: Durability, I think. This is an investment in yourself and in your home. It has to be strong. It has to be durable. Remember: outdoor furniture has to be built much differently than inside stuff because it’s going to take more abuse … So the most important thing to do is to buy a few quality pieces that you can have over a period of time … This doesn’t have to be ‘throw away stuff’ after one year.
“The way to go is to get some deep ome d seating. Get something comfortable. Grab a sectional and a couple of chairs. There’s nothing wrong with doing your barbecue in a more relaxed casual environment. People appreciate that,” says Bockner, who also designs furnishings for many commercial projects, including The Ritz-Carlton in Toronto and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. To keep a mellow mood and bodies at ease, Bockner leans towards larger pieces, like outdoor daybeds, large-scale sofas and massive sectionals. It’s about bringing indoor luxuries outside, as he adds, “You can create the comforts of your indoor environment outside with everything from refrigeration to music and stereos.”
After all, it’s your leisure time so why not indulge? “We work so hard every single day, why not have an oasis to come home to at the end of the day for the three or four months we can enjoy it in this town. I think it’s such an important part of life.” 416.298.4770 www.andrewricharddesigns.com www.citylifemagazine.ca

reater Toronto Area homeowners know that every square foot holds great value. With limited residential space and a 9 to 5-plus work life that can often confine you to an overcast cubicle, there’s never been more of an incentive to make use of your sunny backyard space. This is where gardening guru Jennifer Hayman comes in. “In Toronto, space is at such a premium that rather than having neglected, unused lawns and gardens, why not make it a series of outdoor rooms that flow and connect and allow you and your family the opportunity to relax and really maximize your time outside.” Hayman is the founder of Toronto’s award-winning landscape design-build firm Jennifer Hayman Design Group. While Hayman’s firm fulfills a diverse array of landscaping dreams, she says that a rising trend in outdoor space solutions is to take existing abandoned garages
22 City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011
and transform them into functional escapes. One of her most recent projects was retrofitting an unused double garage by creating an L-shaped storage area with French doors, an elevated cathedral ceiling with a chandelier and a stone patio with sectional seating. “We essentially created a true outdoor structure or room using what was already on their property,” says Hayman, who has a garden design degree from the Oxford College of Garden Design.
JENNIFER Q&A WITH HAYMAN Q: W What are your favourite plants and flowers to work with? A: I love textural plants. I love a lot of the ornamental grasses and the sedges. I o llike to use a strong palate of greens and whites – I find that very calming. Green and w white tends to stand out and brighten up w a dark garden. Hydrangeas are one of my favourites; it’s the sedges and really creating that combination of textures and colours that will give you interest throughout the year.
Herbs of Napoli combines oregano, rosemary and thyme.
Since it’s the season of patio furniture purchases, Hayman has a few wise words. “It’s like a wardrobe: you have your staples and then you have your fun, hot trend pieces. You certainly normally don’t invest in those trend pieces – you want to invest in the staples.” So take the time this summer to stop and smell the roses – in your own backyard. 1.888.969.4029 www.jhdg.ca www.citylifemagazine.ca

ED GIBBS Q&A WITH Q: What are some tips for first-time pool buyers?

A: “Research, research, research, and don’t buy on impulse. Most important, get a master plan, do your homework, really do some soul-searching of what you’re looking for, why you’re looking for it, how it will bring the family together, how it will bring friends together, and what are you going to be using it for now and as you move forward.”

ave you always wanted to spend your summer days in a lush tropical lagoon instead of an ordinary backyard? This longing need not remain a mere fantasy – you can transform your yard into a sultry oasis with a breathtaking pool as the focal point. “It’s like having your own waterfront property,” says Ed Gibbs, president of Gib-San Pool & Landscape Creations. The world’s first ISO-certified pool company and a member of the coveted Master Pools Guild, Gib-San is more than just a pool-builder. For over 40 years, it has been designing and creating pristine properties, renovating backyards into little pieces of paradise. “You really have to have designers

and architects involved if you want to achieve something more than an average backyard and pool,” he adds. From landscaping to barbeque and dining areas, it’s all part of the Gib-San package. “It’s the feel, the touch, the smell, the sounds, the lighting – all of those things really complete that circle of what everyone should be thinking of when putting in a backyard resort,” says Gibbs, who was also the former president of the Pool and Hot Tub Council of Canada. But a well-made pool is more than just stunning esthetic; it’s also a means of bringing family together. “Really, the important aspect of a pool is health, wellness and family time,” says Gibbs.
Water features, such as waterfalls, diving rocks and fountains are all great additions to bring your pool to life.
Pattern concrete, interlocking brick, natural stone and artificial grass are just a few of the ways to finalize your backyard.

hen the sun goes down, playtime begins, and what better place to get the good times rolling than in the privacy of your backyard? Without proper lighting, however, your once-exciting celebration can turn into a shadowy game of Marco Polo. With the right luminosity, this outdoor locale can become an intimately lit escape.
Prima Lighting co-owner Sam Folino knows great customer service shouldn’t leave customers in the dark.
There once was a time when you strung some patio lanterns here, threw a spotlight there – no big deal. Today, the team at Prima Lighting understands that the art of illumination takes more than arbitrary lamp placement. “You have to be very careful with the number of lights and where they’re positioned,” says Luca Filice, co-owner of Prima Lighting. “Every light has it’s own job and it’s own unique style.” Lighting should blend into the surrounding, feel organic and not obstruct movement. W hether employing landscape-irradiating spotlights, ground-lining well lights, walkway-illuminating path lights, or simple wall-mount fixtures, arrangement is key. “It’s important to use the right light for the right application, obviously not to over do it and do it in a subtle way,” adds Filice. “It has more to do with lifestyle; with how you’re going to use your backyard,” says Filice’s partner, Sam Folino. “Let’s organize the lighting around that, figure

A: “Well, first you’re going to have modern landscaping and modern décor, so I would highlight the focal points. You’re going to be layering the lights according to how the backyard is designed. The pathways would be lit up; if there is a pool that would be lit up as well. If a customer has a waterfall, there are LED lights that go on a waterfall that can change colours. If there’s a tree you’re going to up-light the trunk of the tree only, and that will go up. Sometimes you might silhouette the shadow of the tree on the house. There are so many possibilities.”

With a self-assurance and practiced poise that’s poetically performed, you would never guess that the spirited 39-yearold considers herself an introvert. “I need time alone. I’m quite shy at my core and at my being and I don’t really invite attention,” says Ray. That’s not the case, however, when the red light is flashing. “I enjoy being in front of the camera, and in a weird way that’s a way of deflecting attention. It doesn’t sound like it obviously would be, but it is, because you’re actually just interacting with the camera,” she adds. A resident of Toronto’s Beaches, her mellow vibe and sunny disposition are radiant. An admirer of iconic Italian movie stars Claudia Cardinale and Sophia Loren, Ray bears a surreal resemblance to the latter Old Hollywood heroine. Aside from both being lauded for their natural beauty, the ‘two women’ actually have a lot in common. In many ways, Ray’s life is evidence that there are lessons to be learned everywhere, reflecting a similar sentiment to a famous Loren quote: “It’s a mistake to think that once you’re done with school you need never learn anything new.” Referring to herself as an “accidental actress,” Ray was discovered by a fashion magazine at 16 while vacationing in India with her Bengali father and Polish mother. Practically overnight, she torpedoed into a successful career as a model,

Lisa Ray is in her own world right now. The acclaimed Canadian actress appears faraway from the photographer, videographer and stylists that have formed a tight circle around her. Even the intense stare of studio lights can’t assuage her green gaze as she ironically sways to the orchestral sound of Arcade Fire’s Empty Room. Wearing Christian Louboutin shoes on her feet, a white silk-chiffon Réva Mivasagar dress on her body and the lyrics When I'm by myself, I can be myself on her face, Ray’s angelic feathers are as unruffled as it gets.

with her face strewn across magazine covers and her name inscribed in several publications, including a Times of India poll, which named her the ninth most beautiful woman of the millennium. “Through a combination of circumstances and twists and turns, I thought I’d maybe model for about six months in India, and that turned into a decade,” says Ray, who had aspirations of becoming a journalist at the time. Having shot to superstardom in India, Ray eventually made the next natural career move and starred in the film Kasoor in 2000, followed by Bollywood/ Hollywood. “In a weird way, acting and the profession I’m in is almost out of default … I mean, I love acting, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not as terrified of failing at it as I would be at writing,” she says.
mother, she spontaneously decided to enroll in whatever course was concurrently running. The enlightening topic turned out to be death and dying. “It was fascinating … We actually did a visualization where we’d talk through the scenario where you enter the doctor’s office, you sit down and the doctor says, ‘Listen, bad news, you have six months,’ and then you try to figure out what you’re going to do with those six months,” says Ray, still surprised by the serendipitous circumstance. Instead of dwelling over her subsequent diagnosis, Ray began a witty, cerebral

After getting her feet wet, Ray stepped onto a global platform, starring in Deepa Mehta’s Oscarnominated film Water in 2005. Despite receiving critical acclaim for her social-politically driven portrayal of an oppressed widow in 1930s India, she believes her best role was actually in a South African movie called The World Unseen, in which she plays a married mother who falls in love with a woman at the onset of apartheid. “I was just so much more in control of my craft by then and you can just feel the difference as an actor. I kind of know how it was flowing and how authentic it was for me,” she says.
As genuine as her performance might have been, some would say that Ray’s most significant role is actually her most recent one, as a real-life “cancer graduate.” Her life took a turn from actress to activist shortly after she was told in 2009 that she had multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. Horrifying words for anyone to absorb, but in another series of twists and turns, Ray had a chance dress rehearsal prior to her doctor’s daunting diagnosis. blog called The Yellow Diaries, where she discussed her near-daily experiences with multiple myeloma and the chemotherapy, steroids and stem cell transplant that coincided. In an excerpt called “Mane Tamer” from an entry dated Nov. 23, 2009, she writes about her liberating decision to shave her head before side effects shackled her freedom of choice: ‘My stem cell procedure begins on Monday. Tomorrow. So I donned a disciple’s robe and surrendered my hair … I can transcend now. A reinvention. A purification. And a transformation. From the inside out.’ Her site attracted attention from all corners of the globe, with a comment board that howled heartfelt support of all forms, from poems to video
montages. Her blog became something much more than a personal outlet of expression. “It was a big breakthrough for me because a lot of my life has been spent on the road and it’s been a very solitary life and now at this phase of my life I’m understanding the power of community and support and reaching out,” she says. Now cancer-free, Ray credits her stem cell transplant as a saviour and has become a major advocate and philanthropic force for what she believes is, “going to be the next big leap or big wave.” A globetrotter for awareness, she’s not only a face but a voice for stem cell technology in India and Canada, and recently completed the national Make Myeloma Matter media tour. In addition to her charitable endeavours, Ray is currently in the process of penning her first book, and she’ll be stepping onto the stage again in June with Luminato’s Taj, around the same time Toronto plays host to the International Indian Film Academy conference. She’s also transformed her passion for yoga, which she tributes as a fundamental part of her healing process, into a business by partnering up to launch Moksha Yoga Brampton. “This gives me the opportunity to share and give back something that I feel strongly about,” she says. Back at the photo shoot, you would never guess that Ray is someone who recently had a life-threatening illness That is, you would never guess, unless you knew – in which case, you’d understand – that the 5-foot-4 firecracker, perched in a warrior yoga pose, is exactly who she is today because of her experience with cancer. “It is very powerful because it changes you on every level … It’s just sort of a renewed engagement with life now.” Like words written with sparklers in the air, lyrics to another Arcade Fire song leave a lasting impression: “My mind is open wide, and now I'm ready to start.” www.lisaraniray.com City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011

hen you’re an actress-turned-mom-turnedblogger-turned-singer, you’re bound to have a lot on your plate. But Gwyneth Paltrow just couldn’t resist adding yet another entree to her CV – a cookbook author.
With her statuesque figure and peaches-and-cream complexion, the award-winning actress is just at home in her kitchen than she is on the stage, having developed a passion for food after sharing treasured moments cooking alongside her late father, filmmaker Bruce Paltrow. Stretching beyond her role as actress, Paltrow’s adoration for food imparted by her dad culminates in My Father’s Daughterr (Grand Central Life & Style, 2011), which is now a bestseller.

LIFE’S
SIMPLE PLEASURES “For me, I kind of feel like everybody in the whole world has passions that they should be pursuing … if people see me doing different things … maybe they would think, well I’ve always wanted to, you know, do something like that and they would. I just think none of us should stay in our box and if we have passions we should explore them,” said Paltrow in a recent interview with Jian Ghomeshi on CBC’s Q radio show. As a teenager, Paltrow would watch the cooking channel with her father to recreate dishes in the comfort of their California home. Paltrow soon gained success in the film industry, receiving an Oscar in 1999 for her portrayal of Viola de Lesseps in Shakespeare in Love. Her most recent performances include gracing the stage of the 2011 Academy Awards to sing Country Strong, and Cee-Lo Green’s Forget You at this year’s Grammy Awards. But Paltrow won’t fail to remember the contended, concentrated look on her father’s face as they cooked up love and togetherness with food for family and friends. “He helped me realize it’s all about the here and now, that happiness happens on a freezing winter night or in the garden when the weather’s warm, often with a good bottle of wine, and always with the people you love. You just need some good ingredients and a few simple recipes,” she writes in My Father’s Daughter. Her collection of 150 recipes melt the heart just as they do the palate, staying away from the ostentatious to instead venture into the oh-so-familiar, with dishes like Crispy Potato and Garlic Cake, and Cheesy-Stuffed Turkey Burgers adding new twists to comfort food. The foodie finds balance by using organic ingredients and including healthy dishes such as Slow-Roasted Tomato Soup and Classic Chopped Salad with Anchovy Vinaigrette, along with breakfast treats and delicious family meals such as Oyster Po’Boys and Seafood Paella, Spanish Mama
CRISPY POTATO & GARLIC CAKE
A guilty pleasure with a nostalgic touch, this delicious dish is a recreation of one served at Chez L’Ami Louis in Paris – Bruce Paltrow’s favourite restaurant. Gwyneth suggests pairing the pie with roast or duck confit.

A quality wood stain will give your deck and fence a rich and durable finish.

No St ain, NO GAIN If
there’s one thing that can tarnish your backyard’s good name, it’s a poor-looking deck and fence. Over time, sun and moisture can damage exposed decks and fences, giving an undesirable weathered look. To ensure the longevity and durability of your wooden deck and fence, applying a good quality wood stain is a must. But before the brushing begins, there are a few important points to consider.
3KRWRV %\ 9DOHULD 0LWVXEDWD
First and foremost, the wood must be prepared. If your deck and fence has seen a few winters and you’re looking to recoat the lumber, cleaning is crucial. “It removes any mould, grime and dirt from the wood, and gives the finished product a more pristine look,” says Claudio Grisolia, owner of Steeles Paint. If this is the first season for your timber, you’re in luck: no cleaning is required. However, if you just recently built your deck and fence, Grisolia highly recommends sanding the wood. “This removes the mill glaze – the polish left by the saw from the mill – and opens the pores to allow the stain to soak deep into the wood.” Weather and temperature also play key factors when applying stains. The wood
34 City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011
needs to be completely dry, but if it is too hot outside the product won’t properly penetrate, either. “When the sun is beating down on the surface, it’s actually heating the wood,” says Grisolia, who first opened Steeles Paint in 1988, and has over 30 years in the paint business under his belt. “What happens is the stain will start drying the minute it hits the wood and won’t soak deep enough in.” The ideal time to apply a stain is early in the day or later in the evening when the sun is away from the deck. For the environmentally conscious consumer, Steeles Paints also carries a variety of eco-friendly, waterborne stains from companies such as Timber Pro Coatings and Benjamin Moore. These biodegradable products give a spectacular look, while remaining gentle on the environment.
Á Since opening Steeles Paint in 1988, owner Claudio Grisolia has maintained his exceptionally high standards for customer service.
Steeles Paint is an eco-friendly retailer with an extensive selection of biodegradable products.
If you’re still apprehensive towards the process, Steeles Paint’s more than knowledgeable staff can guide you stepby-step, as Grisolia concludes, “We won’t sell anybody anything unless we walk them through it.” 416.743.4040 www.steelespaint.com www.citylifemagazine.ca

very celebration hass an ending, but not before cakee uries,, is served. For centuries, baked desserts have served erved d n the a traditional role in pe – celebratory landscape h to from birthdays and bar mitzvahs weddings and anniversaries. Yet, cakes have evolved from their conventional role of edible accessories to the main event themselves, reflecting innovation and uniqueness in baking craftsmanship. Surmounting the pressure that comes with creating good-looking cake is Robert Bozzo, owner and executive chef of St. Phillips Bakery in Maple, Ont. The scent and sight of freshly baked cakes topped with Callebaut chocolate; creamy pastries oozing with chilled cream, festive treats and hot crispy breads has generated crowds of customers yearning for a bite of St. Phillips, a multi-faceted bakery renowned for all things sweet since 1989.
With bread on the brain and cake on the conscience, Joseph Bozzo inherits his passions from father Robert Bozzo, owner of St. Phillips Bakery.
Every masterpiece commissioned by St. Phillips comes alive with personality and character, with lifelike features crafted by Swiss-trained pastry chefs and the magic of the ever-popular fondant icing. Penetrating eyes, the toned abs of a belly dancer or the sporty curves of an F1 Ferrari make it hard for you to take your eyes off a St. Phillips cake. “You just look at people’s faces and you just know you’re doing it right,” says Bozzo, who recommends light cakes layered with fresh strawberries for summer weddings, and lemon yogurt cake after a backyard BBQ. Red velvet is also a popular choice, with Bozzo’s recently revamped cream cheese frosting turning the flavour-favourite into one of the best available at St. Phillips. “I want people to say ‘wow,’ what a great cake.”
“I’m as good as the last time you came here.”
A peek at St. Phillips’s repertoire of voluptuously crafted custom cakes gives testimony to how Bozzo pushes past conventional liquor-soaked slabs to create cakes like those seen on popular shows such as Cake Boss and Wedding Cake Wars. Last year, St. Phillips Bakery was commissioned to create an edible passport for celebrity guest Jim Carrey to use during his shtick on Conan O’Brien’s comedy tour stop in Toronto. During an average week, the bakery produces 1,600 cakes, extending tiers of joy to repeat customers, heads of corporations, restaurants and foundations.

It was in 1979 when Bozzo’s father, Joseph Bozzo, launched the first St. Phillips store in the north end of Toronto. Decades later, Bozzo continues his – Robert Bozzo father’s vision of European quality while blazing a trail in the world of baking. Bozzo’s delight for dessert has extended to his sons, Joseph and Sandy, who look to their father as a role model in life and business. “He is passionate because he knows that he has seen the best in the world and that he can always try to achieve better to be at that level. He has taught me that there are no short-cuts around achieving a good-quality product,” says Joseph, the manager at the St. Phillips’ Maple location. His brother, Sandy, leads the team at the St. Phillips Bakery in Woodbridge, which opened in 2001. Additional locations are anticipated in Schomberg, Ont. and downtown Toronto. While the flavour of success is certainly a taste Bozzo is all-too familiar with, the baker remains dedicated to providing his customers with consistent quality. “I’m as good as the last time you came here,” he says with a smile. www.stphillipsbakery.com Maple: 905.832.5688 Woodbridge: 905.893.2863 www.citylifemagazine.ca

THE STUDIO SPOSA
Bride
A charming consultation room is just the beginning of an experience that will turn you into a Studio Sposa bride.
Sposa are the prologue to your own S personal fairy tale. pe
Studio Sposa founders Mary D’Aversa and Mariangela Muia vow themselves to couture gowns and exceptional service.

ere comes the bride, all dressed in a predicable gown worn by others before her: a fashion no-no committed on the most important day of her life. Luckily, these cookie-cutter bridal looks play second fiddle at Studio Sposa. Bringing some of the world’s best designers home, the warmly romantic boutique offers rare collections for a unique and beautiful approach to modern elegance and traditional affection in bridal wear. Amidst tufts of tulle and delicate silk duchess rises a Studio Sposa bride – a woman who fittingly swathes her silhouette in fine beauty, expert craftsmanship and handmade couture. “We always thought that if we were to do something, how would it be different. We then started doing research on wedding dresses and designers,” says Mariangela Muia, who met Mary D’Aversa while both worked in the financial sector.

The duo waited a year before they opened the doors of their boutique in the intimate village of Kleinburg, a treasured photo shoot location for newlyweds. During this time, Muia and D’Aversa carefully selected renowned bridal houses that design one-of-a-kind semi-custom dresses by hand. What soon filled their showroom were the accoutrements of David Fielden’s simple prettiness; the ethereal romance of Katerina Bocci; Claire Pettibone’s delicate vintage looks, and more. “The designer that really inspired us the most was Atelier Aimée,” says Muia. “Through our visions of what we saw in regular bridal, this was above and beyond what bridal was.” The whimsical, enchanting creations of this European brand sparkle with Swarovski crystals, the finest French lace, hand-sewn rosebuds and flowers. A Grace Kelly inspired dress by Atelier Aimée rivals the intricacy of Sara Burton at Alexander McQueen’s wedding dress for the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middelton). Your first steps into Studio

What’s more, the boutique offers designer trunk shows starting in January, where brides get to meet the designers of their dress and inquire about additions such as crystals, flowers and rosebuds to their dress. From metal bins to flimsy bags, separating the junk from the gems is an arduous task. Enter U-Box-It: A unique idea that raises the bar with a revolutionary bin that satisfies eco-conscience clients. “While most people are trying to think outside the box, I focused my efforts on the box itself,” Mammone famously says of the delivery, pick-up and disposal concept that’s cleaning up the GTA. An ambitious do-it-yourselfer and advocate of green living, Luana found U-Box-It to be aligned economically and ethically to her project and needs. “I could not believe how simple it was. nnovations in modern home entertainment provide a plethora of possibilities for families to enjoy their media however they see fit. Although fascinating, today’s technology can be the source of much confusion. Celebrating 25 years of home audio/ video experience, who better than the experts at Audio One to provide valuable insights into how new technologies are creating exciting prospects for household entertainment. “Home entertainment is becoming so customizable it’s no longer a question of, ‘what can I do with this room, but rather, ‘what do you want to be able to do in this room?’” says Gino D’Ascanio,
42 City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011
home audio/video specialist and partner at Audio One. With extensive expertise in high-calibre home theatre and music systems, the team at Audio One is well aware of the latest trends in home electronics. One of these leanings is a buzzing industry catchphrase: Internet-enabled TV. Manufacturers like Panasonic and Samsung are now fitting TVs with the capability to directly surf and stream online content, like music and movies, straight through your big screen. “It means individuals can access websites like Facebook, Youtube or Netflix, right from their television,” says Anthony D’Ascanio, brother and partner at
Audio One. “Some of them even have built-in web browsers.” You might start kissing your DVD collection goodbye with all that digital content at your fingertips. But what’s video without the audio to back it up? Audio One may house a range of high-quality surround sound audio systems that will have your home theatre pumping, but multi-room music systems are what’s really electrifying. A single system powers a multitude of speakers throughout the home so you can rock your tunes anywhere. More sophisticated systems even allow separate music sources to play in different rooms at the same time. “The good news is that wireless music systems from companies like Sonos are affordable and easy to set-up,” says Carlo D’Ascanio, the third brother and partner at Audio One. “It’s really amazing how much more you enjoy music when you www.citylifemagazine.ca
have the choice to listen to and control it anywhere in the home.” Let your daughter dance to Bieber in the living room while you enjoy The Beatles in your home office, all through a single audio system, a beautiful thing. All these enhancements are spectacular ways of customizing your home entertainment, but to fully master your domain, you’ll require control; and what better way than through a home automation system. As Gino explains, “Control systems for homes are becoming more and more mainstream. Through a single keypad you can control your home’s audio, televisions, lighting, security, climate control, and more.” Once reserved for the affluent, home automation is becoming far more affordable and increasingly smarter. These systems put the power in the homeowner’s hands, and companies like Creston and Control 4 even have downloadable apps for iPads and other tablets for wireless use. Interestingly enough, lighting control is one of the key features driving home automation, as Anthony adds, “A lot of people come looking for home automation as much for the lighting control as the audio/video.” Apart from eliminating “wall scar” caused by light switches, home automation systems have a simple pre-set feature, allowing homeowners to adjust their lighting’s intensity at the push of a button. Hosting a dinner? Pre-set a party mode and slightly dim the lights to an intimate level. This feature also makes home automation a great green alternative as you can lessen your light’s strength, helping to save money on energy bills. All these technological possibilities may seem overwhelming and complicated, but Audio One is more than just a specialty retailer of high-calibre home audio and video systems. Their knowledgeable staff includes programmers, network/IT specialists and designers to coordinate a home entertainment plan that not only fits your budget but reaches the epitome of performance. “We will, from startto-finish, work with the client on the www.citylifemagazine.ca

Their impressive showroom includes multiple demonstration rooms that allow customers to “audition” various set-ups to find a system that suits their taste. The Foundation diligently accumulates funds to afford organizations like Canada Company and True Patriot Love with much-needed finances that will provide Canadian soldiers with a shoulder to lean on. This includes aid for families of fallen and injured soldiers, and scholarsh scholarships and bursaries for soldiers wishing to pursue an educational career. “W “What we decided to do was not only raise money for the regiment,” says F Fogarty, “but raise attention to some of th the areas where the government isn’t able to help out and support families.” Fogarty explains how the Foundation has also supported an initiative with major Canadian universities to waive tuition fees for soldiers and their families; the importance of safeguarding civilian careers for soldiers; and the need for adequate resource centres for veterans, as he makes clear, “We’re going to have lots of soldiers come home, and each soldier is going to have their own set of needs depending upon their families. They ’re going to need counselling and assistance.” Although still relatively young, the 33 Signals Foundation has currently raised roughly $50,000 for these initiatives,

While the 33 Signals Foundation’s admirable work is commendable in the highest regard, Martin understands that not every citizen can dedicate that much time and money to a cause. However, philanthropy isn’t limited to mere monetary pursuits. Sometimes spending an afternoon at a veteran’s home, a local legion hall or just saying “thank you” to a soldier on the street are all significant means of expressing appreciation for our fellow Canadians in arms. It’s
hard not to wince at the thought of a child undergoing plastic surgery. Indeed, I cringed when ABC’s Good Morning America aired a story about seven-year-old Samantha Shaw – a South Dakota first-grader – who recently received surgery to pin back her cup ears. At such a young age, how could a parent allow an innocent child be subjected to that kind of invasive change? It’s far too easy, however, to zealously preach such a seemingly high moral platform. It’s far more difficult to be the one on the receiving end of vicious namecalling and social ostracizing. Unlike adults who tend to be more comfortable with their social standing, children generally desire acceptance from their peers and to be part of the crowd. This is made all the more challenging with a noticeable disfigurement. “I’m very much an advocate to support any form of surgery that helps to reduce the stigmata of a visual facial difference,” says Dr. Christopher Forrest, chief of the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children. “Children get teased at the best of times and having a visible facial difference like that really makes it much, much harder, and there’s good evidence to support that children that do have, for example, outstanding ears, are at risk of things in terms of self-esteem perception and levels of psycho-social distress.”
46 City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011
INNOCENCE UNDER THE KNIFE Written By Michael Hill
In Samantha’s case, although she personally never attested to being picked on during the interview on Good Morning America, her mother allegedly claims she was often teased, with adults as the main source of ridicule. As a result, the surgery she received was more of a preventative measure, a means of easy integration into societal norms. Medically known as an otoplasty, this common procedure has been in practice for years, taking roughly an hour and a half to complete and yielding immediate results with little risk of serious repercussions. Today, the terms “plastic” or “cosmetic” instantly signify negative connotations. Thoughts immediately turn to breast augmentation, liposuction, facelifts or Botox, but as Dr. Forrest explains, with a child, that’s simply not the case. “Unfortunately, in this day and age, the term ‘cosmetic’ as its applied to plastic surgery has some fairly negative connotations because we tend to think of body contouring procedures.” Dr. Forrest continues by explaining that the majority of surgery performed on children revolves around normalization procedures that correct deformities, such as abnormally shaped heads, cleft lips and pallets, burns, abnormal
growths, and as mentioned before, otoplasty – certainly acceptable and commendable work. But while substantial deformities like cleft lips are arguably a necessary treatment for normalization, Samantha’s case closely dances near a slippery slope. We may accept this type of safe and simple surgery, but it raises concern over a much more conspicuous ideology, specifically our championing of an unrealistic level of physical appearance. Adults, and more importantly children, are told, ad nauseum, what beauty is, and what “attractive” is. We are taught by the media that something is wrong with the face in the mirror and that it can and should be corrected. “We are allowing our girls to believe at an early age that they are not good enough as they are – and that the most valuable thing about them is how well they conform to the cookie-cutter ideal of ‘hot’ modern womanhood,” says Tanith Carey, author of Where Has My Little Girl Gone (Lion Hudson, 2011). Indeed, many public figures on television, movie screens and in magazines are all physically attractive and readily have work done to “restore” that youthful www.citylifemagazine.ca
appearance or “enhance” their painfully normal bodies. We celebrate physical beauty more than intellectual exploits and just as much as athletic accomplishment – perhaps even more so. For Carey, this is all part of a “perfect storm,” where children are constantly bombarded with images of supposed perfection. Celebrities are role models, and many children aspire to reach those pinnacles of stardom. “This creates an unrealistic expectation among young girls that they should also try to look the same way. But when so many can’t without airbrushing, stylists, trainers, etc., they feel they are not good enough.” It’s true that young girls have always tried out their mother’s makeup, but as Carey adds, there are numerous children – as young as six – on YouTube that give thorough tutorials for applying makeup. “I think the fact that I have met little girls who feel they need makeup because they are not good enough as they are – instead of just trying it on to see how it feels to play dress-up – shows it’s gone beyond a game.” According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there has been a decrease in the number of cosmetic procedures performed on teens (ages 13 – 19) since 2006. However, from 2009 – 2010, there was a three-per-cent increase in total cosmetic surgical procedures, including a four-per-cent increase in breast augmentation. This going beyond what Carey mentions can be seen in examples such as Sarah Burge, a.k.a. The Human Barbie, who recently made headlines in various news sources, such as The Daily Mail and The New York Daily News, after revealing to Closer Magazine that she gave her daughter Poppy a £6,000 (just over $9,500 Cdn) breast enlargement voucher for her seventh birthday. The voucher is only good when Poppy, who allegedly wanted this procedure, turns 16. Or the shocking case of Sheena Upton (a.k.a. Kerry Campbell), who revealed to the British paper The Sun that she allegedly injected her daughter Britney with Botox to give her a leg-up on the competition in beauty pageants. This case is shrouded with controversy as Upton allegedly claimed later in a TMZ interview that she fabricated the story for money. These two disturbing instances are just a few stories that have circulated through news sources regarding the embracement of cosmetic surgery as a means of achieving the elusive beast of physical perfection. In the end, what adults do with their bodies is their decision, even if that means looking like Jocelyn Wildenstein (Google her). However, while some may crave that plastic Barbie esthetic, we should be weary of the message this sends to children. Procedures like otoplasty or the correction of cleft lips are acceptable means of reducing visual stigmas, but the shallow and misguided pursuit of physical perfection is simply a blemish on our supposedly enlightened culture – one that could use a moral facelift. www.citylifemagazine.ca

massaged and moulded onto your skin, then quickly, but gently, flicked off. This ensures all of your unwanted hair is taken right out from its roots by removing it in the same direction as your hair growth, not the opposite as waxing does. The process of sugaring eliminates the likeliness of injury, damage or bruising to your skin, which is a common result of strips being ripped off your skin through waxing. This makes it a perfect choice for hair removal in your most sensitive areas like the bikini area, Brazilian, underarms and face. Only 2 to 3 millimetres of hair growth is required for this procedure, so there’s no embarrassing period spent waiting for an acceptable amount of hair regrowth. No matter your hair texture, skin type, age or gender, an appointment to Sugar Blossom will leave you hair-free and silky-skinned for weeks. 905.832.2964 www.sugarblossomsalon.com 9222 Keele St. Suite 17 Vaughan, Ont.

THE PRACTICAL PRINCESS: ELIKA GIBBS
T
he day of the Royal Wedding was fitting to interview a princess – a practical princess, that is. “I am probably the most boring person in the whole-wide-world,” says the sweet English voice on the phone. “I promise you darling, I am.” With years of experience in the fashion industry and elite clients Kate Moss and Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon, wardrobe guru Elika Gibbs is far from lacklustre.
LEFT Adapting to space is one of the first steps in a successful closet makeover.
Her personal shopping and wardrobe organizing company Practical Princess gives women the help they need to feel confident in their clothes and happy in their closets. The knowledge Gibbs has been sharing with celebrities is now available for everyone to enjoy. Her new book, Practical Princess Perfect Wardrobe hands us her winning formula on a silver platter. With posh closets and designer clothes spread across the pages, Gibbs makes it an easy, if not indulgent, read. “Clothes do hold memories and we do sort of have attachments,” says Gibbs. “The energy changes in the room when we finish what we do.” Despite the celebrity wardrobes she has skillfully handled, Gibbs is called practical for a reason. “I tend to spend less money on the fashion pieces – the one-season wonders,” says the down-to-earth businesswoman. The essentials, like generic coloured T-shirts, cardigans and jeans are the most important. “It’s like building a house,” says Gibbs. “You’ve got to have the foundation.” A fluid and functional wardrobe is one that aligns with your lifestyle. “I do believe that what we have in front of us has to be key to our lives at that point.” Gibbs’ book is a step-bystep guide on how to revamp your closet and decide what to keep, what to archive and what to edit. Sharing everything from what to wear for a successful shopping trip, to what types of hangers to choose, this practical princess is your wardrobe’s perfect companion. A COLOURFUL SITUATION: SABRINA ALBANESE Moving from fashion to furniture, Sabrina Albanese designs pieces and spaces with various creative disciplines. :ULWWHQ %\ $WKDLQD 7VLIOLNOLV

reativity isn’t born out of someone who plays it safe. “If I’m not scared when I’m doing something, I’m not doing it right,” says interior designer Sabrina Albanese.
Graduating from Ryerson University’s School of Fashion in Toronto and Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London, England, Albanese went on to co-own a clothing label called Wolves. After living in New York to pursue her fashion career, Albanese eventually moved back to Toronto where she realized her true calling. Now, she is a successful businesswoman and interior designer, who lends her talent to anything from commercial projects to vacation homes. “One thing about me is that I love design in general, so I embrace every discipline,” says Albanese. Describing her style as eclectic, this multi-dimensional individual loves antique shopping and watching old movies for décor inspiration. “I like finding unusual things.”
Unlike when she was in the fashion industry, following trends is not a vital component of her design system. Albanese only uses trends she finds unique, such as natural wood-top tables with painted metal legs. Adding character to an industrial look is a great design technique that you don’t see in every home. “I never regurgitate projects,” says Albanese. “I always do something new and fresh.” www.sabrinaalbanese.com

Albanese often starts designing a home by building a colour palette that complements the overall look she wants to achieve. In a recent project, she opted for various pastels to create a country cottage feel, proving that she has never been afraid of experimenting with different hues. “A lot of people, when I first started, told me not to abuse colour, and I use and abuse it,” she says.

MAKING LASTING FIRST IMPRESSIONS: ROULA THALASSINOS
‘‘
:ULWWHQ %\ $WKDLQD 7VLIOLNOLV
Growing up, Thalassinos always had a love of beautiful things. “My mother was a custom dressmaker and I would always see luxurious fabrics and one-of-a-kind pieces.” Following in her mother’s footsteps, this businesswoman first started as a fashion designer for her own successful line of children’s clothing. After years of compliments on the look of her home, it was time to apply her knack for decorating and creative vision to yet another endeavour.

I can’t live without my imagination,” says Roula Thalassinos, the owner and visionary behind Stagedfx. With a presence and passion for the home staging and interior decorating business, she doesn’t have to.
Thalassinos soon became an expert in the home staging industry and a successful interior decorator. “When staging a property, we create an emotional connection with the potential buyers,” says the certified Canadian Staging Professional (CSP®). “We help homes sell faster and for more money.” She maximizes space and appeals to everyone’s visual palate by opting for warm and neutral colours while creating a ‘wow factor’ in each room. When designing for living, Thalassinos gets personal. “I really like to listen to my client’s likes and dislikes, and I even interview the kids if I’m doing their rooms,” says Thalassinos. “My decorating style is transitional – a marriage of modern and traditional.” She leans towards black and white as her backdrop, adding punches of bright colour with throw pillows and bold accessories. This designer diva takes risks and incorporates trends, while always aiming for looks that last.
RIGHT: The focus lingers on clean and crisp architecture. BOTTOM: A modern and trendy look is achieved with a high iron table, chic pillows and simple accessories.
Thalassinos believes everyone deserves to have a home they love. “There’s a misconception that hiring a decorator or designer is only for those who are well-off,” says the talented entrepreneur. “I believe that it’s achievable and affordable for everyone.” Describing her designs as fresh, unique and timeless, Thalassinos combines her visual expertise with her clients’ ideas to create magical spaces. www.stagedfx.com

CRISPY POTATO & GARLIC CAKE INGREDIENTS: 2 1/4 cup 1/4 cup 3 1 tbsp
large baking potatoes (2/3 pound peeled) plus 1 tablespoon duck fat (tablespoon for the pan) or butter extra virgin olive oil cloves peeled garlic, 2 crushed, 1 ďŹ nely minced Coarse salt ďŹ nely chopped fresh parsley
1. Preheat the boiler. 2. Boil the potatoes for 20 mins and let them cool before slicing them into 1/8 inch thick slices. Heat a spoonful each of the duck fat and the olive oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Add 1 of the crushed garlic cloves and as many potato slices as can ďŹ t in one layer. Cook for about 3 mins a side, or until lightly browned. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate and repeat with the remaining fat and potatoes, switching out the garlic cloves when they get too brown. 3. Coat a small (6-8 inch) cast-iron skillet with the tablespoon of duck fat. Line the bottom with a single layer of potato slices, sprinkle with salt, and add another layer. Repeat this process, pressing each layer down hard with the back of a wooden spoon and lightly salting as you go until you’ve layered all your potatoes. Pressing them down is what will keep the cake together, so don’t be too gentle. Stick the cake under the broiler until really browned and crispy, about 5 mins. Invert it onto a plate and scatter with the 1 clove of ďŹ nely minced garlic, parsley, and bit more salt if you like. Cut into wedges and serve. www.citylifemagazine.ca

Mention the magical name ‘Mitsubishi EVO’ or ‘Evolution’ and suddenly ears perk up – especially from the car enthusiast crowd. This is a special car that has been designed to excel in one thing only, which is to go extremely fast from corner to corner! Here’s a car that earned its street cred competing in the World Rally Championship (WRC) and has four world titles on its belt, thanks to rally driver Tommi Mäkinen.

Now in its fourth generation, the EVO is packed with the latest go-fast hardware that allows it to compete in a rarified crowd that includes Porsche 911, BMW M3, Mercedes AMG, and other supercars. Its main rival with similar performance and pricing is the Subaru STI, which is also built off a humble compact econobox. performance. Using the compact Mitsubishi Lancer sedan as its platform, the EVO adds a high-strung 2-Litre turbo-charged engine with intercooler, which brings horsepower up to 291 and torque to a very strong 300 lb. ft. – a killer combo when taking into account that the car weighs under 3,600 pounds. The Lancer Evolution GSR, which is the base grade, gets the standard 5-speed manual transmission, while the higher grade MR is equipped with the 6-speed automated Dual Clutch (TC-SST) transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters for lightning-quick shifts. For a car that has fast reflexes and a lively chassis that revels in sideways cornering styles, the dual clutch transmission is actually preferable, as the driver can operate the transmission via the steering wheel paddles and not have the hands off the helm during banzai manoeuvres! Talking about the chassis, the EVO’s suspension with forged aluminium arms is fully modified and tuned with very aggressive settings for total driver enjoyment and exploitation. The MR grade adds performance name brands like Eibach for the springs and Bilstein for the shock absorbers, which take the handling performance to an even higher level that

FROM CITY HALL TO CITY LIFE WE SIT DOWN WITH THE MAYOR OF VAUGHAN TO DISCUSS HEALTH CARE, INFRASTRUCTURE AND TAXPAYERS’ DOLLARS. ,QWHUYLHZ %\ 0DGHOLQH 6WHSKHQVRQ
Q: Is being mayor of Vaughan everything you expected after 22 years in federal politics? A: Actually it’s a lot more, it’s more exciting than I thought it would be. The issues are issues that touch people in a very real way every day, whether they are related to seniors, recreation, or dealing with transit and traffic, and economic development. I think the most exciting part about politics today is the evolution of cities – they are becoming the magnets for investment, creating jobs, providing the quality of life and standard of living for the people – it’s been a very fascinating experience. I’m really happy that I came back to the city of Vaughan to take on this role because this is a city where many things are happening. We have a new subway coming up, we have the future development of a downtown core, we’re going to see many exciting things occur in the area of culture, sports, the arts, and it speaks to a dynamic process that is taking place in this city that will make it truly a world-class city. Q: I know that many residents, including yourself, have at one point or another voiced concerns over a cost overrun of building Vaughan City Hall – do you have an update for taxpayers? A: Well, the reason why I called for an audit is because there’s a cost overrun, but there are two issues here: there’s the governance issue, which is the audit, and then there’s the actual structure
62 City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011
which is an architectural marvel. It’s an award-winning building. People from all over the world will come to see this building. I have no doubts about it and we are so confident and we are so proud of this building that I’m implementing an idea, which of course comes from my days in Ottawa, where we are actually going to promote tours of City Hall, that’s how much I believe in this City Hall. As for other issues related to the cost overruns, we want to obviously get to the bottom of it because we do have a fiduciary responsibility to the residents of Vaughan who justly deserve answers to their questions. Because at the end of the day, one of the things that I bring to this position is a great belief in the respect of hard-earned taxpayers’ dollars – that’s extremely important. Q: What are your thoughts on the controversy that arose over the federal government’s $10 million donation for a new hospital in Vaughan, specifically towards the Vaughan Health Campus of Care? A: There’s only one story, the story is that the city of Vaughan needs a hospital. I’m not a political leader that gets distracted by noise and static. I’m very focused and my focus is that the residents need and deserve a hospital. If people, for whatever reason, political or otherwise, want to be distracted by this type of dialogue, so be it. I’m certainly not being distracted by it. I appreciate the $10 billion that came in for a life science
cluster from the federal government; we’re certainly not going to return that money, I think the life sciences cluster makes sense from a strategic point of view. I obviously praise the citizens of Vaughan for taking the leadership role with the purchase of the land, but I also want the provincial government to understand its responsibility very clearly – that is that they need to come up with $1.3 to $1.5 billion, so that the residents of Vaughan can in fact have a hospital. That is the issue, not the noise, the noise is not the issue, the noise and the articles, that’s not going to build a hospital, what’s going to build a hospital is the political will to make it happen and we, as residents of the city of Vaughan, will continue to engage in fundraising and we’ll continue to work together with York Central Hospital to make sure that we do build this hospital. Am I distracted by the noise? Not at all. Do I think that this type of noise is healthy for the process? Absolutely not. Q: You’ve been a big proponent of infrastructure and finding solutions for traffic in Vaughan, what changes can residents look forward to? A: In this particular issue, you have to work with major organizations like Metrolinx, York Region and all levels of government. Of course, with the downtown core, we’re going to have a transit system there that’s going to be world-class with the subway but also other means of transportations, other, I should say, avenues to alleviate some www.citylifemagazine.ca
of the traffic. Now we have to also be very frank with the citizens of Vaughan; we need to understand that we are now a city, we are no longer a small town, we’re a city where intensification is going to occur, but intensification is also going to draw the best transit system to it, and there has to be an excitement, there is a buzz about the city, and what I sense is that with intensification – when you have a downtown core and you have 30,000 people living in it and working and playing, and raising families and attending functions, at our performing arts centre – there’s going to be a new vibrancy to the city.

ashion luxury jewelry is for those with an innate desire for high fashion. They’re the modern-day movers and shakers, social butterflies and reputed gift givers who appreciate timeless pieces but are also in tune with trends. Cupido’s contemporary interpretation of luxury brings brands like Pandora, Michael Kors, 3H Italia and Hermès to the table. Cupido is now introducing three new lines, ensuring its long list of luxury products never stops growing.
With eye-catching gemstones, Designs by Hera offers fashionable and versatile pieces for any occasion.
Taken from the Latin word for desire, Cupido stays true to its name. Jeff Karadjian, Cupido’s co-founder, swears by featuring products that he is passionate about and that customers long for. As a leader in the jewelry industry, Cupido prides itself on being the first to carry a product. “We are at the beginning of the trends overseas, so that we are the trendsetters in the Canadian marketplace,” says Karadjian. Tsovet is the contemporary watch line that Cupido has recently adopted. Exclusively distributed, this product pushes the boundaries with industrial design. Perfectly complementing the well-received 3H Italia brand, Tsovet appeals to the trendsetting male. “It’s more avant-garde,” explains Karadjian. With diverse designs and interchangeable straps, Philip Stein watches will give you a sophisticated or laid-back look this summer. But with Philip Stein, looking good is only half of the equation. A study published in the Sleep Diagnosis and Therapy Journal has proven that Philip Stein watch owners are sleeping more soundly at night, thanks to its Natural Frequency q y Technology, which leaves the body relaxed. Bringing brands to Canada from around the world, Cupido will also be carrying a Londonbased collection. Robert Tateossian is the man of the hour, being the first to put watches on cufflinks. The self-titled line has now expanded to include a wide range of jewelry. With these brilliant new brands, Cupido is staying at the forefront of the jewelry industry, sharing with its customers only the most desirable. www.cupidodesigns.com Locations: Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre: 905.669.8522 Bayview Village Shopping Centre: 647.346.2176

nown wn for elaborate beading and Swarovski-encrusted gowns, Tony Bowls continues to create dresses that turn girly girls and lovely ladies into stars. He opts for feminine designs that play with beautiful colours and flattering silhouettes. American Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina wore his designs on the show, proving that he continues to flawlessly create for the young female consumer. This summer, Bowls will be launching his first shoe and accessory line. Looking towards celebrities like Lady Gaga and Twilight’s Ashley Greene for style inspiration, Bowls has set out to create fashion-forward pieces. “It’s like a whole new generation of young social customers out there,” says Bowls. “They make it challenging, which is why I love it.” As the official designer for Miss America 2011, Tony Bowls is the king of formal fashion. After many years in the retail industry, he now has more than a handful of his own clothing collections. “[They’re] fresh and innovative, ” explains the visionary. His new and exclusive bridal collection for Mon Cheri unveils exquisite couture wedding dresses.
Bowls creates a dress that mixes elegance with attitude. A high slit and bold colour make this gown a show-stopper.
Unlike most designers, Bowls always aims for wearability. “I’m not the type of designer that just sits in a corner by myself in hopes that I’m going to create something that a consumer is going to like,” explains Bowls. “I really like to hear from the actual buyers themselves.” Growing up as a dedicated dancer, fashion was never an area that he thought would consume his resumé. Bowls stresses the importance of letting go of the expected in order to make room for the unexpected. “Don’t try and control your destiny,” says Bowls. “Take With a sweetheart advantage of any job that might come your neckline and soft way.” It was this attitude that turned him into nude colour, this a well-known designer who dresses celebrities, dress will make you look stylish and pageant contestants, and fashionistas from graceful. around the world. www.tonybowls.com

The president and founder of the long-established real estate and development firm Guizzetti Developments Inc. partners with Holborn Developments Inc. to bring the height of glass couture to the community of Richmond Hill. Like a champagne flute overflowing with celebration, a gleaming façade of glass encases exquisite interior design of imported granite and marble-polished surfaces, top-of-the-line amenities and spacious suites. Future residents are welcomed with a European approach to lifestyle, grand with a swimming pool, an outdoor terrace, a state-of-the-art gym, harmonious winter garden and waterfall to wash away hectic days. In a world fraught with global warming, the Grand Genesis stands tall in its environmental endeavours as a Gold-certified building in The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. “You don’t see a building like this in Richmond Hill. Open House for
+A Q First-Time Buyers
WITH
VIVIAN RISI
Here’s what you need to know when purchasing your first home: Q: What key factors should first-time newly newlyweds yweds urchase? pay attention to when making a home p purchase? A: The key is to consider their lifestyle for the next three to five years. If they decide to stay in the home longer, they need to pay attention to whether or not the home will suit their future lifestyle. If they decide to have a family, for example, then they must take into consideration whether the area will be suitable for children. Are there schools or parks around? Will the home provide accommodating space for children?
In
life and love, there are possibilities that you’ve never imagined, and what better location to nurture that potential than in your very own home? After vows have been exchanged and cake has been served, the most important experience for newlyweds is purchasing their first family home together. An investment for the future, real estate continues to be the most tangible, stable and secure asset one can make. According to the Annual RBC Homeownership Study conducted by Royal Bank of Canada, Canadians, supported by a strong banking system, have a strong interest in purchasing a home over the next two years. This is a positive sign for buyers in 2011: new government mortgage regulations ensure a more stable housing market; as prices rise, equity increases, making for better long-term home investments. The low-interest rates we currently see are enticing, and greater consumer confidence results from stable employment and rising incomes. All this translates to good news for first-time buyers purchasing in a housing market free from fear and bustling with optimism. Once the decision to purchase a home is made and lifestyle and financial requirements are calculated, buyers are halfway to home ownership – but not without a few hiccups. The biggest hurdle when purchasing a home today is the lack of inventory. Once a desirable home is found, there are usually five or six other buyers vying for the same property. A real estate agent with strong negotiating powers and knowledge of market trends will guide you through a sellers market towards your dream home in no time – all while listening to your needs and checking off your list of wants. After all your questions surrounding the biggest purchase of your life are answered, pride of homeownership and family security ensues, all thanks to a real estate agent who knows her way around every neighbourhood.
Q: What are some common mistakes new homeowners often make? A: Quite often, new homeowners don’t thoroughly research the area. They do not take into account factors that may affect the value of the home they are purchasing. Hiring a realtor that is knowledgeable in his or her market is an essential step. Lack of thorough research and knowledge of the market could result in a financially stressful situation. Q: What are the factors to consider before one buys? A: Location. It doesn’t matter how you turn it: Whether it is your decision to be close to work, family or your children’s school, proximity with respect to your current lifestyle is key in our busy and demanding society. Q: Is it better to buy a less expensive house in a more expensive neighbourhood, or the opposite? A: Generally speaking, you will see greater return and a lower risk in buying a less desirable home in a desirable neighbourhood. Q: How can a buyer secure a quality mortgage product? Is it important to look beyond the interest rate to the true cost of the loan, both now and in the future? A: The best way a buyer can secure a quality mortgage product is to hire a qualified mortgage broker. They will search all the available mortgage products and match your needs to a suitable mortgage product. In addition, a buyer must ask questions in order to determine the true cost of the loan. Rate is an important factor in selecting a mortgage product. In addition, the pre-payment terms and conditions are equally important. It is important to be aware of locked mortgage loans and potential penalties if they decide to sell prior to the mortgage maturing. Being informed regarding this will save the buyer thousands of dollars. Q: What are three reasons to purchase a home in 2011? A: The cost of borrowing is at a historical low. The real estate market in general is strong – different areas will display this differently; and long-term real estate is a great equity builder. Canada, internationally, is a safe destination that is driving foreign investors. This attracts more buyers into our marketplace, therefore affecting our supply and demand, and ultimately, driving our prices up.

horoscope By Richard Ravenhawke
st ars
The
this month!
Gemini
ÅThe Duke of Cambridge turns 29 on June 21.
Cancer
MAY 21 - JUN 20
Be careful … pretty masks can sometimes be hiding the hungry wolf who seeks to devour! You have to step back and ask yourself who has truly always been there for you and who is in it for him or herself. Stop rowing, and if the boat still moves, then everyone is doing his or her part. If it stays still, then you were the one doing all the work.
JUN 21 - JUL 21
It may be time to make a move. If you have been thinking about changing residence or perhaps career location, the stars may be holding a bit of favour for you over the next few months. Plan carefully and before you know it, you could end up exactly where you have always wanted to be. It is time to make a choice!
Leo
JUL 22 - AUG 21
Your ‘bat senses’ have been pretty good as of late, so trust your instincts. An intuitive sense seems to be opening for you and there are answers that may be right in front of you. Believing these answers may be your personal challenge, however, trust in your senses and the truth shall definitely set you free!
Virgo
AUG 22 - SEPT 21
There are those around you who may be playing games, yet they do not see the folly ahead. Someone who truly loves you will be waiting for you at the end of summer. Eyes tell the real story, as they are the windows of the soul. Open your heart and trust what it tells you. Patience is a virtue.
Libra
SEPT 22 - OCT 20
Money, money, and money … all will work out in time. Take a break from that which seems to be constantly monopolizing your attention and see the world around you through different glasses. We all must step
82 City Life Magazine Jun/Jul 2011
back and look objectively from time to time, lest we be the last one to see things for ourselves.
Scorpio
OCT 21 - NOV 21
Things are looking good! Patience is about to pay off in a big way, and new influences turn out to be more productive than previous ones. Watch for an Aquarian figure that has some very valuable advice – it’s time to ‘think and grow rich.’ If you play your cards properly, opportunities are about to become very impressive.
Sagitt arius NOV 22 - DEC 21
It is time to watch, listen and learn. Reflecting on old friends and acquaintances may bring to mind just the right person to ask for advice. You have been working hard at your goals, and it is time to see the fruits of your labour begin to bloom. Take a close look at the smiles around you to be certain that the eyes are smiling, too.
Capricorn
DEC 22 - JAN 19
Your practical side has been showing itself as of late, and people around you are beginning to see your wisdom. It is time to let your hair down now and shake things up a bit! All work and no play can make Capricorn a dull sign. If you use your imagination just a little, there should be enough fun around the corner to cure all.
Aquarius JAN 20 - FEB 18
Take your time and weigh your options carefully. Travel is prominent on the horizon! Embrace each opportunity with a sense of adventure. Your spirit is about to shine as all comes together and settles exactly where you have always felt it should. Enjoy it responsibly.
Pisces
FEB 19 - MAR 20
Relationship changes may be drawing near. For those already attached, it could be a time to reconnect or re-examine connections. For those who are still looking for that special someone, there could be a bright smile just around the corner. Take time and listen to your heart – the spirit always knows the truth!
Aries
MAR 21 - APR 19
Watch for good news from an old friend and a Piscean figure that bears an opportunity. It’s time to make certain that you haven’t faltered from your original path.
Taurus
APR 20 - MAY 20
There has been a lot going on behind the scenes. Watch as an observer and the truth will reveal itself to you. Take a breath and step back from your daily routine. Richard Ravenhawke 416.898.HAWK (4295) richardravenhawke@yahoo.com www.ravenhawkpsychic.com
