you’ll be happy if you get the job of your dreams. But according to recent studies in the field of positive psychology, it is actually the other way around — meaning that if you are happy then you will be successful, not the other way around.

MAY YOU REJOICE IN THE PRESENT!

Top psychologists have found that only 10 per cent of our long-term levels of happiness is based on what is happening in the world around us. Ninety per cent of our happiness comes from how our brain perceives the world and processes that “reality.”

But where does happiness come from at all? We often hear people say “Work hard and you will be successful” (and therefore happy because — of course! — success equals happiness), or that

But how can we achieve that goal of feeling happy? Where will that happiness come from to begin with? Well, we can learn to be grateful for the simple things in life … such as pausing, even for an instant, to notice a sunrise or a sunset. We can rejoice in our ability just to wake up every morning and be alive to enjoy another day. We can reconnect with our childhood excitement and take a moment to really see the beauty and hear the stillness when fresh snow blankets our neighborhood in winter. We can enjoy a meal with our family, a kind word from our peers or clients or a stranger’s compliment. These are all small things, but they can elevate our mood if we take the time to acknowledge and truly allow ourselves to feel them.

With the busy holiday season fast approaching, it can be difficult to carve out a bit of time just for ourselves. But allowing ourselves to live in the present can really be a gift.

In our interview with our cover star Mike Holmes and two of his kids, Michael and Sherry, it was evident that they have mastered the art of enjoying the moment and staying in the present. Needless to say, most cover stars are always pressed for time and so were they, so their attitude wasn’t due to the lack of meetings or appointments in their calendar. Instead, it seems to be their ability to adopt their “do it right the first time” philosophy — not just as a slogan but as a way of life.

They love what they do, and it shows: they radiate happiness as they live in the moment and seem to approach everything they do with the same level of care and attention — in this case, allowing our team to conduct an exclusive interview and photoshoot for our readers. Mike Holmes is a figure we have long watched and admired, not simply for his building abilities, but mainly for the goodness of his character, which viewers can see in each episode. He’s living proof that when internal happiness shines through the result is success, not just in our jobs but within our families and within our own hearts.

As we continue to publish City Life we feel fortunate to be able to experience connections with so many positive, inspiring, empowering individuals. We strive to maintain our awareness of living in the present. It really is worth the effort, for when we reach that level of attunement, we open ourselves to seeing the real world, which is the most miraculous gift.

Wishing you a most blessed Holiday Season and may you rejoice in the present!

Celebrating the legacy of the remarkable athlete, Air Canada unveils a special Vince Carter livery

We are aware of the exceptional contributions made by Vince Carter in his incredible basketball career. Sharing his emotions, Vince Carter said, “The city of Toronto, and Canada as a whole, has meant so much to me throughout mycareer.” He added, “I am deeply touched by this tribute from Air Canada and can’t wait to share the excitement with all the incredible fans across the country.”

Carter has shared a special bond with Air Canada he was nicknamed after the airline during his seven seasons with Toronto Raptors. He also performed in the arena where Air Canada was the first named sponsor at the time, strengthening the bond between the athlete, the airline and Canadian basketball.

As the country’s national airline, we’re proud of our long-standing support for Canada’s teams and exceptional athletes. Vince Carter’s legacy shows that in addition to his number taking its place in the rafters, it is also meant to fly.”

Carter’s silhouette, signature and jersey number will be prominently displayed in the livery, the designs adorning its aircraft. The airplane’s undercarriage will also display Carter’s name and number to showcase the immense contribution and impact made by the athlete on his Canadian fans.

Estiatório M ilos:

GRAND OPENING INTHE HEART OF TORONTO

At Estiatório Milos Toronto, Greek food is elevated to the highest level, a celebration of both its cultural heritage and its status as the one of the world’s favourite cuisines

Ona 2021 episode of ITV’s Gordon, Gino and Fred Go Greek!, famously skilled and belligerent British chef Gordon Ramsay confidently declared, “Greece never gets the look-in that France has or the Italians … Honestly, I think Greek cuisine is better than Italian cuisine.”

Naturally, this left Italian celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo in shock, but Ramsay didn’t expect to shock the entire world or spark the rivalrous Mediterranean cuisine debates that continue to this day. Meanwhile, the cuisines of Greece and Italy (mainly southern Italy) both feature fresh vegetables, fruits, olive oil and seafood.

As of recently, that debate may have shifted in favour of Greece, courtesy of Estiatório Milos Toronto. Led by

chef and founder Costas Spiliadis, Estiatório Milos, located at 330 Bay St., is redefining our understanding of Greek cuisine, which, unfortunately, has often been gravely misrepresented by quickto-make ubiquitous, greasy and gyros wraps. Estiatório Milos is, without a doubt, the finest Greek cuisine, made with high-quality ingredients prepared with respect and simplicity.

Spiliadis was born in Patras, a port city near the ancient Greek site of Olympia. As a child, the family values he learned in the kitchen were that Greek cooking is born out of respect for nature and love for everyone and that it is a form of artistic expression for us to share with our loved ones.

“I wanted to create a place where everyone feels welcome, where the joy

of dining is embraced in a refined yet warm and inviting environment. Toronto is the ideal city to continue this journey, and I hope everyone will enjoy the authenticity and heart of our cuisine and our experience,” says Chef Spiliadis.

Milos Toronto’s menu showcases signature dishes including the Milos Special, paper-thin zucchini and eggplant lightly fried and served with saganaki cheese and tzatziki; the Greek Spreads, a selection of taramasalata, tzatziki and htipiti accompanied by grilled pita and raw vegetables; and Octopus, sashimigrade Mediterranean octopus that has been charcoal-broiled to perfection. Two more standouts are the Grilled Heirloom Onions that have been flown in from the Greek island of Zakynthos and drizzled with 25-year-aged balsamic vinegar, and the popular Astakomakaronada, Athenian-style lobster pasta.

As fine Greek cuisine continues to gain recognition, it will undoubtedly alter the story of what we too often mistake “Greek food” to be.

www.estiatoriomilos.com

@milostoronto

Milos Toronto is also the first to offer a family-style menu, celebrating Spiliadis's deeply held belief that “sharing food at the table brings people together and enriches the culinary experience.”

The architectural beauty and interior design of estiatório Milos Toronto is a stunning tribute to both Toronto’s heritage and Greece’s ancient past

Central to the Milos experience are its light-filled atrium and signature fish marketplace, a vibrant and visually captivating focal point presenting immaculately fresh Mediterranean fish and seafood

Life and Food CHEF LAURA PANARESE

Chef Laura Panarese gets candid about her journey, love and passion for food and life

Are you looking for inspiration to start your journey as a chef? Are you interested in what a successful chef’s life is like? Would you like to know what attributes, choices and values govern the kitchen? All these questions can be answered by just one name: Chef Laura Panarese.

She is the Executive Chef of DI LA Dining at Speducci Mercatto in North York, and four years ago she became the Chef Ambassador at Pastificio Felicetti Canada. Chef Laura’s journey is one to celebrate and to learn how important it is to set one’s heart and soul on work that will produce the best results and, in her case, make customers relish every bite on their plate.

Panarese was six years old when she first saw her grandmother cooking pasta. Everyone in her family, including her parents, were good cooks, and this is where her love of the craft started.

Panarese started working as a company manager but still loved to

cook, which led her to prepare a meal for everyone at lunchtime. Finally, deciding that she had to heed her inner calling and do what she loved best, she went to Milan to learn the nitty-gritty of cooking and learn all that she could about food. In 2018, she was invited to be a guest at an event in Canada and the rest is history.

For the past four years, she has been the chef up front at DI LA Dining. She reminisces how her little kitchen room became her second home. This is also where she paints at night.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that her kitchen has become a representation of herself. She adds, “All my emotions are on my plates. Every plate has something from my life.”

For instance, one of her dishes is octopus. She feels the creature resembles her in terms of having a sensitive personality. Another one is risotto, which she says represents her country and family.

In her kitchen, all customers are welcomed as part of the family. She

loves to have her customers come to the kitchen. She strongly believes that “eating here is not just dining; it’s a whole experience full of emotion.”

Paranese wants her customers to have a feeling of being at home. She recalls the experience of hosting a family one evening and warmly recounts how seeing them celebrate and have an amazing evening together filled her heart with joy. It always makes her day when customers leave smiling after having had a good time with their loved ones.

Speaking about the most important attributes that drive her, she says, “Everything I do in my kitchen is about love and passion.” Without these two traits, it is hard to grow in a profession like hers.

She adds that one can’t do everything for money cooking is a tough job demanding many hours of service, and it’s easy to lose heart in the process, so it’s only a deep underlying passion for the work that gets you through those difficult times.

when you treat other people well that you can work in collaboration and give customers a valuable experience.

It is her dedication and immense love for her profession that have helped her achieve tremendous heights in her career. As an avid lover of pasta herself, she was delighted to be named the ambassador for Pastificio Felicetti Canada, having used the brand both in Italy and now in Canada.

When she is not working, she loves spending time with her dog, who she brought to Canada from Italy five years ago and considers her “baby,” she says.

However, when asked about the greatest gift she has ever received, she said, “It’s my daughter. She’s my everything, and every single thing I do is for her.”

When asked about her dolce vita, she added, “We have only one life, and we should enjoy it.” Her dolce vita is her passion for cooking and love for her family.

Canadian Olympian Brandie Wilkerson feels empowered and healthy on and off the court ... what’s her secret?

Aprofessional athlete’s intensity, no matter which sport they play, can inspire fans and intimidate competitors. But one thing is certain: an athlete’s work ethic is not only reflected in their performance but also influences their lifestyle when they’re not competing. It is those non-training days, filled with limitless temptation, that can make

all the difference!

City Life was honoured to sit down with one of Canada’s most beloved Olympians, Brandie Wilkerson, to get the inside scoop on how an elite competitor stays physically and mentally ready to perform at the highest level on the role of confidence in her life and what inspires her to continue doing what she loves.

Q: What are some wellness tips or practices you swear by to stay physically and mentally fit both during the volleyball season and in your off time?

A: For me, movement is a big part of my physical and mental health. Finding ways to move my body, whether it’s weight training, yoga, a walk around town or even dancing, helps to keep my activeness as a lifestyle rather than restricting [it], and helps even

my moods when I’m not feeling my best. I also love including healthy foods like beets, turmeric and ginger in my daily routine. During the season, a big thing is dedicating time for rest, whether it’s a 20-minute power nap or taking a weekend off to shop or hang out with friends. It allows me to show up, ready to train at my fullest.

Q: What are your top three essentials for your rest days?

A: A cosy bed. Sparkling water and a snack. And a detoxifying face mask.

Q: Confidence plays a significant role in any athlete’s life; what is its role in yours? What are some of the ways your rest days contribute to your confidence?

the journey I’ll be on heading into the next Games and looking to capture that gold medal. I think consistency is such an impressive goal, so that takes a lot of time and work. I think setting goals that will set you up to be a better, more loving, self-aware, capable human being will never get old.

Q: What is one piece of advice related to lifestyle that you wish you had known earlier in your life and career?

A: I can rest comfortably knowing I gave my all in training, and I have the confidence to build and benefit from rest. That’s something I had to learn while becoming professional. I also think confidence is a choice, so I am mindful of how I speak to myself, the people I surround myself with, my goals and doing the work at my best.

Q: What has the transition been like for you after the Olympics, and how are you adjusting to life beyond competitive sports?

A: Since I haven’t finished my season yet, I’m still competing at a competitive level. It’s been tough, both mentally and physically, to keep training after a long season, but also so encouraging and freeing to play, knowing what I’m capable of and being completely supported by so many fans around the world.

Q: Tell me about Project Worthy Scholarships. Why is this cause/ organization special to you?

A: Project Worthy started as a scholarship for BIPOC [Black, Indigenous and people of colour] volleyball athletes to play at a club level without the financial burdens. Now, it’s

growing into a mentorship program where we run volleyball clinics specially catered to BIPOC athletes so they can learn how to manage the world of an athlete both on and off the court. I believe representation of all stories and cultures are deeply important to the growth of the sport and society.

Q: I know you love the brand Westmore Beauty. Tell me about it. Why is it your goto brand?

A: Westmore Beauty has always been a go-to brand for me when it comes to my beauty regimen. One of my favourites is the Supreme Cream, which evens out my skin, hydrates it and makes my skin glow without looking overly made-up during matches. I also love their Body Coverage Perfector for body to conceal any imperfections and make me feel like my most confident self on the court. I can always count on the product to stay in place no matter how long I have it on for and how intense and sweaty a match can get.

Q: How do you set new goals for yourself after achieving something as significant as competing in the Olympics?

A: As a student of life, I know there is so much more to learn and grow from similar to the Olympic Games, and I look forward to

A: To listen to your intuition. First, learning how to hear that deep inner wisdom and then trusting to follow it through no matter how different it may seem from what others are saying and journey, because everyone’s journey is so unique.

Q: Who or what inspires you the most in your athletic journey, and how has that influenced your approach to both sports and life?

A: I’m inspired by Serena and Venus Williams’s story. I can relate to their beginning, coming from a low-income neighbourhood, without the background or access to the sport until later. So, I’m inspired by their impact and force in the sport that was traditionally reserved for a certain culture and how they have undeniably become the best, overcoming race, gender or any limitations. Of course, I also love that they’ve become businesswomen and have such an interest in fashion, like I do!

Q: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the next few years, both in sport and outside of it?

A: I’m looking forward to training and qualifying for the LA 2028 Olympic Games with my teammate, Melissa. Outside of sports, I’d love to buy my dream car, a vintage Bronco, and, more importantly, spend quality time with my friends and family and some epic spa days.

ARCHITECTS OF STORYTELLING: DANNY BERISH & RYAN MAH

The profound, much-anticipated documentary by Danny Berish and Ryan Mah, ArthurErickson: BeautyBetweentheLines , had its world premiere at ADFF Toronto

On October 23, 2024, Toronto’s cinematic landscape glimmered with the premiere of Arthur Erickson: Beauty Between the Lines, a profound homage to the iconic Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. Directed by the visionary duo Danny Berish and Ryan Mah, this documentary transcends conventional architectural discourse, presenting a complex narrative of a man whose vision reshaped landscapes and lives.

As the theatre dimmed, the audience emanated palpable anticipation. Over 500 attendees — esteemed colleagues and fervent admirers alike — filled the space with a rich atmosphere of nostalgia. “It was a big thing. Bigger than

I expected,” Mah reflected, recalling the heartfelt reunions sparked by the event. This gathering was more than a celebration of architectural prowess; it served as a poignant homage to the enduring connections forged through Erickson’s remarkable legacy.

The premiere resonated deeply, especially among those with personal ties to the architect. “You could feel the sensation... yes, he is Canada’s Frank Lloyd Wright,” Mah remarked, capturing the reverence that permeated the air. The project emerged from Mah’s serendipitous encounters with Erickson’s masterpieces in Vancouver, which ignited his fervent ambition to shine a light on this architectural

luminary. “We have to make a movie about him,” he declared, recognizing the deeply personal narratives intertwined with these structures.

The filmmakers unearthed an Aladdin's cave of archival treasures from Erickson’s family. “The family was ready to unveil that part of his life,” noted Berish, and the film deftly navigates between Erickson’s public acclaim and his private struggles. The documentary explores the delicate terrain of his life — his battles with dementia, the profound effect that the loss of his partner, Francisco Kripacz, had on him, and the shadows cast by professional decline.

Arthur Erickson: Beauty Between the Lines emerges as a lyrical exploration

of love — both for architecture and the intimate connections that shape it. “Ultimately, it’s a story about architecture, but it’s really a love story,” Mah emphasized, referring to the emotional currents that enriched Erickson’s genius. This first feature for Berish and Mah, forged through nearly a decade of collaboration, radiates their shared vision. “Our relationship is very shorthand ... there’s never any creative battle between us,” Berish stated, describing at their seamless partnership.

As audiences departed, many were struck by the documentary’s depth. “A lot of people didn’t realize Arthur had dementia,” Mah noted, referring to one of the film’s revelations. Arthur Erickson:

Beauty Between the Lines invites viewers to appreciate Erickson’s legacy while reflecting on the personal sacrifices that fuelled his creativity.

Set for theatrical release in Vancouver and streaming on the Knowledge Network in January 2026, this documentary serves as a meditation on the interplay between artistry and existence. It beckons viewers to peer beyond the façades of Erickson’s creations and illuminates the profound relationship between artist and art, as well as inviting contemplation of the intricate tapestry of human experience that informs artistic vision.

Using intimate interviews, unseen archival footage and an exploration of his architectural masterpieces, the film weaves together the complexities of Erickson’s personal life, his sexuality and his public-facing professional life
The Holmes family legacy: passing it down from one generation to the next

worked with me for two summers, he was hooked. I was hoping that would happen. And with Sherry, I told her we were going down to New Orleans to help the people there and asked her if she wanted to come. Next thing you know, she was hooked, too. And now Michael, who was 14 when he started, and Sherry, who was 16, have been with me for 16 to 18 years.”

Holmes aficionados who want to have a deeper, more intimate experience of the interactions and interpersonal relationships of the Holmes family members can tune into the new sixpart series Holmes on Homes: Building a Legacy, which premiered exclusively on Cottage Life on November 12, 2024. The new six-parter is an intimate, family-centric addition to the long-standing Holmes on Homes TV series. Viewers get a bird’s-eye view of how Mike mentors and interacts with his kids, as well as clear examples of what Mike’s trademark “Make it Right” mandate is all about. The new show is embedded in strong everyday family experiences and profiles new smart-home technologies to educate homeowners about how they can make their homes healthier and more efficient. State-of-the-art film technology, including the use of drones, is also featured as the trio of Mike Holmes, Mike Jr. and Sherry work with Canadian homeowners on their renovations.

Sherry concurs that the recent version of Holmes on Homes: Building a Legacy is a different take on the original show, Holmes on Homes.

“It is nice to get back to our roots,” Sherry says. “However, in this new show, there is a little bit more family involvement, and viewers will have a window into parts of our personal lives. We still teach some construction aspects and educate homeowners, but viewers will see more of our personal lives.”

The Holmes family mission statement, which in fact is the cornerstone of every job that Mike, Mike Jr. and Sherry are involved in, is “Make it Right.” In other words, the trio set their intentions to do

“It launched me into working another 10 years with my kids so I can help them move in the direction they should go,” Mike says.

And while Mike has often wondered why he is still doing what he’s doing, it is the deep appreciation and gratitude on the faces of people that he and his kids are helping that makes it all worthwhile.

“It is that end day, when you give the house back, that it feels so right,” Mike says. “Michael and Sherry started to experience those same feelings. When you see the tears in their eyes, you know that they have both been affected. Helping families and changing their lives forever is a wonderful thing we do. People think it is just a television show,

‘‘ ‘‘

THERE IS DEFINITELY ROOM FOR FEMALES IN OUR INDUSTRY AND WE MAKE IT A POINT TO MAKE ROOM FOR THEM

— Mike Jr.

Both Mike Jr. and Sherry liken the new show to going back to their original Holmes on Homes roots.

“We are big on educating people. We want the audience to learn how we are doing it right, why we are doing it the way we are doing it,” Mike Jr. says. “And then we want to give them takeaways as to what we are doing and the products we are using. But what I am really excited about is that there is a lot more personality and personal stories injected into this show. It’s the best of Holmes on Homes and the best of everything else we have done, put together. I like to say that we have all the ingredients to make a cake, and this cake is delicious.”

the job right the first time so it doesn’t have to be redone or revamped.

Having worked hard for so many years and achieved the success that he has, Mike knew that if he could get his kids interested in the trades, they’d basically be good for life.

“Being a contractor, I don’t have any days off,” Mike says. “So, the only way I could see my family was to have them work with me. Michael and Sherry are good kids, and they love helping people. They’ve become so good in front of the camera that I am hoping one day they will have their own show.”

The only problem with that, Mike shared with a laugh, is that now he has to keep working.

but it’s not. We actually change people’s lives. We make them better; we make it right. Having my family help these families — you can’t buy that feeling. You cannot put that kind of thing in the bank.”

The strategy behind Holmes on Homes: Building a Legacy is focused on continuing to build the legacy of helping people — passing down that philosophy from Mike to his kids, and for them to do the same thing — to pass down the legacy to their kids.

Indeed, the Holmes family legacy is growing, with Mike Jr. and his wife having another baby. And while Mike senior quips that he was a little afraid at first of his burgeoning family, which

will soon include six grandchildren, he says he is now embracing it as an opportunity for the family to start their own baseball team.

When Mike Jr. and Sherry started working on their first show, they were apprehensive. Working with their dad was a different world, and they were surrounded not just by the camera people, but also by people from production and construction, as well as homeowners.

“I told them to ignore the camera,” Mike says. “I kept them in the background to protect them while I was teaching them, and then after about three years, all of a sudden, they were naturals in front of the camera.”

Sherry, who has been an ambassador for Habitat for Humanity’s Annual Women Build event and a mentor for young women through Conestoga College’s Jill of All Trades and WIST (Women in Skilled Trades), has been instrumental in changing perceptions about how women in the trades are regarded, and in fact, accepted. She has been influential in sparking respect in a male-dominated industry, as well as winning admiration from the women who are coming up behind her.

“Sherry’s strength is that she is funny. She brings a sense of humour

and lightness to the construction site, which eases the tension,” Mike Jr. says. “I forget that Sherry is not only my sister but also a female contractor, which is so important for young girls to see. Because it is a male-dominated industry, it has been really important to have a female contractor on the show, a positive female influence. There is definitely room for females in our industry, and we make it a point to make room for them. We want to set that bar for everyone else and show them that women can do this job as well as men.”

Just as Mike has shared his construction and renovation experiences with his kids, so, too, does Sherry want her two girls to know their way around the business.

“I’ve told my girls that they can do and be whatever they want to be in their lives,” Sherry says. “If they want to be involved — if the business is something that they are interested in doing — I will help them. They can do and be whatever they want in their life, regardless of their gender. My oldest daughter has already laid vinyl flooring.”

Because they work so closely together, Sherry — who says it’s great working together as a family even though they sometimes bicker — also says that all three of them realize that it’s “important

to keep work life at work and home life separate.”

Sherry says the greatest thing that she’s learned from her dad is that happiness is a choice.

“Dad told me that the only one that can make me happy is me,” she says. “And that if I go into a day feeling negative, that is how everything is going to turn out.”

To that end, Sherry makes it a point to wake up every day with a positive mindset and a smile on her face.

“Smiling is my favourite activity. I like being around people, and I love that I am not doing the same thing on a daily basis,” she says. “And I’ll let you in on a secret. Mike Holmes is a giant

It Right” both at work and with family is the overriding Holmes family philosophy

teddy bear. When he is at home, he’s not the Mike Holmes you see on the construction site. He loves kids and music and dancing. He likes making food and playing with his grandkids.”

The legacy of passing it on to the next generations is of foremost importance to the senior Mike. Sherry shares that her dad, who always wanted her and her brother to be involved on the construction site, now wants to take a step back and let her brother and her come into their own.

The younger Mike brings to the site his expertise with woodworking and the fact that he is a licenced carpenter, not to mention, he says, “my charm, wit and muscles.” Mike Jr. also says that his

dad’s superpower is that he is a fountain of knowledge and has the answers to all of their questions.

“Dad works, sleeps and dreams work and building,” he says.

As far as the best lesson that he’s learned from his dad, Mike Jr. says it is his father’s guiding philosophy. “When you’re doing something, do it right the first time so you don’t have to do it again,” he says. ‘Make it right’ has been a family philosophy since we were young; it was how we were brought up. There is no cutting corners. How we do one thing is how we do everything.”

The journey from there to here, from Holmes on Homes to Holmes on Home: Building a Legacy, has meant the world to

Michael, Mike Jr. and Sherry.

“A lot of people don’t know that we grew up very poor and that we lived in my dad’s friend’s basement,” Mike Jr. says. “Dad was a contractor — he was always our hero — so to watch him grow and work his way up and build something incredible, based on helping other people, has been the best journey. And to be a part of that has been extremely rewarding. And now, along with my family and my wife and daughter, helping other people inspires me daily, allowing me to be the best version of myself for them.”

II BY IV DESIGN takes another leap forward in contemporary interior design with Auberge on the Park luxury residential condominiums while paying homage to a storied legacy

It’s not only “location, location, location” that is important in real estate, but the quality and setting of that location, which distinguishes some residential developments from others. In the GTA, the lush parklands surrounding the Don Valley offer some of the most attractive pieces of property in the city and will soon to be home to Auberge on the Park, a luxury multitower condominium development with stunning contemporary interior designs by II BY IV DESIGN that will create a European aesthetic and grand hotel ambience in the heart of the city.

The rolling property of 600 acres of parkland near the Don Valley Parkway, Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue has a storied history. It was the site of the former Inn on the Park resort hotel that was opened in 1961 by legendary hotelier Isadore Sharp in the earliest days of his fledging Four Seasons Hotel company.

The hotel was known for its fine dining, Olympic-sized pools in the resort-like setting and one of the first on-site fitness clubs, a breakthrough amenity for a hotel at the time, more than 60 years ago. Another first for the Inn on the Park was that it was the site of Canada’s first discotheque and one can only begin to imagine how impossibly groovy that must of have been in the mid-1960s.

Developed by Tridel and designed by Graziani + Corazza Architects, Auberge on the Park will feature two towers — one of 29 storeys one of 45 storeys — atop a shared podium, creatively designed to take advantage of the rare urban topography and to offer stunning views of the surrounding parks and Toronto’s skyline. The residences will integrate expansive open-air terraces into vertical living spaces. The distinctive cascading terraced balconies draw inspiration from historical European towns and villages known for their sun-soaked terraces and

natural countryside settings.

II BY IV DESIGN’s interior design includes a grand, light-filled, doublestorey lobby, which transitions from sleek modernism to rich, traditional European details. This hotel-inspired lobby space is adorned with sculptural forms, a soft colour palette, custom art installations by local artisans and plenty of seating areas to make it a social gathering spot.

The contemporary aesthetic celebrated by II BY IV DESIGN continues throughout the public areas, amenities and interior suites with an acute attention to detail, quality and impeccable execution that the interior design firm, a winner of more than 450 awards, is globally known for. The interior design is accented with bold statement pieces and nods to old-world charm used and combined in modern ways. The soft organic forms and natural colour palette perfectly complement the surrounding natural parklands.

Specializing in multi-residential complexes, hospitality, retail, marine interiors and bespoke designs, II BY IV Design has always crafted memorable, tailored spaces, staying committed to timeless design and excellence so it can remain at the forefront of the design industry by creating environments that resonate with clients and their extended communities.

Auberge on the Park will be just

such an urban residential community, offering an impressive array of amenities to enhance the living experience for its residents by promoting a socially interactive experience. The shared podium features 3,000 square feet of lifestyle-inspired amenities that include a theatre, multipurpose spaces, as well as a dining room and party room ideal for entertaining.

A state-of-the-art fitness facility is part of an additional 5,000 square feet of amenities on the fifth level, which also contains a whirlpool spa, yoga and spin studios. These spaces open onto a 5,000-square-foot outdoor swimming pool deck and terrace, which provide flexible areas for dining, lounging and entertaining while offering spectacular views.

In total, Auberge on the Park offers

residents access to a combined 27,600 square feet of health and wellness amenities in an elevated urban lifestyle. Additionally, the residential development adheres to Tridel’s “Built Green Built for Life” standards, featuring eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient lighting and green technologies. Thoughtful in-suite finishes promote a healthier indoor environment and long-term sustainability for the betterment of all community residents.

By blending European design elegance with modern sustainability, Auberge on the Park will honour the historic legacy of the Inn on the Park while setting a new standard for modern urban resort living in one of the most scenic parkland settings in the City of Toronto.

Early puberty is associated with an increased risk of psychosocial problems, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and breast cancer

CHEMICAL EXPOSURE CAUSING EARLY PUBERTY IN GIRLS

New research published in Endocrinology suggests early puberty in girls linked to endocrine-disrupting chemicals

Puberty is undoubtedly an integral part of a teen’s life, marking both physical and psychological transitions in a young person’s life. Endocrinology, a peer-reviewed journal of the Endocrine Society, recently published new research that indicates

that exposure to some chemicals may be contributing to early puberty in girls.

Co-authored by Natalie Shaw, M.D., MMSc., of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Menghang Xia, Ph.D., at the National Center for Advancing

Transnational Sciences (NCATS), which is part of NIH, in Bethesda, Md., the study is also based on research by Shu Yang, Li Zhang, Jameson Travers, Ruili Huang, Vukasin Jovanovic, Rithvik Veeramacheni, Srilatha Sakamuru, Carlos Tristan, Carleen Klumpp Thomas and Anton Simeonov of NCATS;

Kamal Khan and Erica Davis of Northwestern University in Chicago; and Kristine Witt of the NIEHS Translational Toxicology Division.

Early puberty often leads to a higher risk of breast cancer, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and psychological problems. This study focuses on how certain endocrinedisrupting chemicals (EDCs) obstruct or interact with hormones in the body. Said co-author Shaw, “We conducted a comprehensive screen of 10,000 environmental compounds with extensive follow-up studies using human brain cells that control the reproductive axis, and our team identified several substances that may contribute to early puberty in girls.”

The research team discovered musk ambrette, a fragrance found in perfumes and personal care products, to be potentially concerning. Recognizing the risk of this fragrance, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken it off its “generally recognized safe” list. Similarly, FDA counterparts in Canada (Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and Europe (the European Medicines Agency and European Food Safety Authority) restrict its use because of its possible risks. However, the product is still available in some personal-care products.

“This study suggests that, out of an abundance of caution, it is important for parents to only use personal care products for their children that are federally regulated,” Shaw said.

She further pointed out, “More research is needed to confirm our findings [...] But the ability of these compounds to stimulate key receptors in the hypothalamus — the gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor [GnRHR] and the kisspeptin receptor [KISS1R] — raises the possibility that exposure may prematurely activate the reproductive axis in children.”

Using a human cell line that overexpressed GnRHR or KISS1R, the research team tested a 10,000-compound library of approved medications, environmental pollutants and nutritional supplements using Tox21. Following up with zebrafish and human hypothalamic neurons, they discovered that musk ambrette boosted the quantity and expression of GnRH neurons.

“Using human hypothalamic neurons and zebrafish provides an effective model for identifying environmental substances that stimulate the KISS1R and GnRHR,” said coauthor Xia.

She added, “This study was a multidisciplinary team effort, and it showed that we can efficiently reduce the time and cost of assessing environmental chemicals for their potential effects on human health.”

The study, “Identification of Environmental Compounds That May Trigger Early Female Puberty by Activating Human GnRHR and KISS1R,” was released online before it was published in Endocrinology.

KIMMBERLY CAPONE INTERIOR DESIGN: THE ART OF TRANSFORMING SPACES

Discover how Kimmberly Capone masterfully blends creativity and functionality to elevate every room, transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences that reflect your style and lifestyle

Ina world where design often feels impersonal, Kimmberly Capone stands out not just for her artistic vision but for her deep-rooted family history in the industry, a family that has always prided itself on its commitment to a personal and hands-on approach.

The journey began over 40 years ago when her parents opened a chain of gift and furniture stores. Capone, originally pursuing a business education, soon found her passion for design through her family’s transition from retail to custom furnishings.

“We had so many clients asking us if we wanted to do design work for them,” she recalls, highlighting the organic evolution of her business. “It just wasn’t something that we were doing at the time. One thing led to another

and we started taking on design projects, and now we have our own factory and we produce, maufacture and design all our own upholstery.”

Today, Kimmberly Capone Interior Design thrives as a full-service design firm, proudly showcasing its custom upholstery crafted in-house, with a design style of “quiet luxury” that emphasizes elegance and sophistication in every detail.

With an acute understanding that the industry was lacking comprehensive design services, Capone was determined to make such services her defining feature.

“Our business is focused on where most designers stop — they stop at the furnishings because they either don’t have the resources or the clients get exhausted with the selection process. So, that’s where we take over,” she

explains, emphasizing her commitment to a seamless experience that goes beyond what looks good to whether it suits your lifestyle.

Because her team incorporates 3-D renderings into their design process, clients can visualize their spaces in real time, selecting from furniture pieces they can physically experience in the showroom. This immersive process not only lets her clients accurately visualize the pieces as they’ll be in their homes, it also allows for immediate adjustments, making it easier for them to see their dream space come to life.

“Seeing it in 3-D is a game changer,” Capone says. “Most people are visual; they need to walk through their space as it will be.”

In a marketplace overwhelmed with quick-fix solutions, Capone prioritizes quality.

“We only use commercial-grade fabrics that

will last,” she notes, rejecting the disposable nature of cheaper alternatives. This ensures that her clients invest in pieces that will only enhance their homes but also stand the test of time.

What truly sets Kimmberly Capone Interior Design apart is the company’s personalized service. From 3-D presentations to an accessory program that includes the final touches of lamps, art, mirrors, and pillows, her team ensures every detail is curated. As part of the accessory program, they bring the aforementioned items to the client’s home and set them up to reveal the completed room. The client can then purchase the accessories they like on-site. Clients experience a simple stepby-step shop-at-home service that many other designers do not offer.

Capone’s reputation in the industry is so distinguished that iconic Canadian builder and TV personality Mike Holmes is featuring her work in the next three seasons on his latest popular television show, Holmes on Homes: Building a Legacy, which will premiere November 12 on Cottage Life. This opportunity allows her to give back to families in need through design initiatives. “We’re helping people and that just lights my world on fire,” she says.

Despite her success, Capone remains grounded, crediting her small but dedicated team. “They’re all committed to excellence,” she emphasizes.

From colour palettes to custom furnishings, Kimmberly Capone Interior Design creates environments that reflect your unique taste

From designers to installation teams, every member shares a passion for delivering exceptional results and is focused on creating spaces that clients will love and live in.

Ultimately, Kimmberly Capone Interior Design embodies the philosophy of “live in rooms you love.” By focusing on creating fully curated spaces, Capone ensures that every client leaves with a room they cherish. From consultation to project completion, Capone ensures clients have an above-and-beyond customer service experience.

The customer service team — Teresa Vu, Angel Nguyen, and Aamna Ahmed — are each assigned to double-check for quality assurance and client specifications at various stages of the process, ensuring that all the steps involved after the client places the order are completed smoothly. This is a unique feature as the majority of interior design businesses do

not have a dedicated administrative/customerservice team.

After the products are delivered, Capone reaches out to each client personally via text from her cell phone, inviting them to share any concerns. This thoughtful approach ensures that every client feels heard and fully satisfied throughout the entire process.

With over 40 years of experience, she continues to set a standard that is difficult to rival in today’s marketplace. A true transformation begins with understanding and artistry, and Capone delivers both with a personal touch that makes a house truly feel like home.

We ensure every trade is carefully vetted and scheduled well in advance, and materials are ready on-site before the project even starts. It’s all about delivering exactly when our clients need us most,” Di Palma notes.

This adaptability and meticulous planning mean projects are completed on schedule, whether transforming a basement for a special celebration or delivering a family’s dream home just in time for the holidays.

MAPLE BAKERY: A FOUR-DECADE JOURNEY OF SWEET DELIGHTS

For 41 years, Maple Bakery has been a staple in the York region, cherished for its family values and community spirit. When the bakery was founded, in 1983, Maple was just a small, quiet Ontario town. So, when the Russo family decided to set up shop in the town, they’ll humbly admit that they didn’t expect the community to grow and the region to evolve so substantially over the decades since then.

As Assistant Manager Stephanie Russo proudly reflects on the bakery’s journey, it’s clear that this family-owned establishment is much more than just a place to buy baked goods — it’s a beloved gathering spot where generations come together.

The entire Russo family plays a role in the bakery’s daily operations, from crafting pastries and cakes to baking fresh bread. This hands-on approach ensures that 95% of

“We make everything that we do,” Russo emphasizes, showcasing their commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Regular customers often treat the bakery like a second home, stopping by not just for treats but to connect with staff and fellow patrons. “It’s a family place,” Russo notes, highlighting the friendships that have blossomed over the years. Many customers have been loyal since the bakery first opened, bringing their children and now their grandchildren to share in the experience.

Reflecting on their greatest accomplishment, Russo points not to sales figures but to the enduring relationships built over decades. “It’s crazy. You grow with everyone’s family,” she says, capturing the essence of what Maple Bakery truly represents — a sweet spot of community loyalty.

As they continue to serve Maple and neighbouring communities, the Russo family’s legacy of warmth, quality, and connection remains sweeter than any pastry they create.

programs, their comprehensive model caters to students of all ages, from elementary to secondary, also offering university support, making IVY ED a versatile option for families.

“We know how to educate,” Nazzareno asserts. “Parents are looking for professional support. They’re looking for someone who knows the education system and who knows how to plan to move forward to help their child. Our goal is to implement teachings that the student will use for the rest of their lives.”

Director of Operations Laura highlights their commitment to a nurturing environment. “We aimed to create a versatile teaching staff. There are not that many places that can do the elementary teachings from J.K., for example, teaching a child how to read yet be able to teach Grade 12 physics and chemistry,” she says. This approach is further enhanced by their small teacher to student ratio and personalized learning plans, ensuring that each student receives the attention they deserve.

The Fiscalettis are particularly proud of the long-lasting relationships they have cultivated with families over the past two decades. “We have students that have been with us from grade one through to university,” Nazzareno points out. That’s a testament to the profound impact IVY ED has had on the legacy of families. “We’re in the business of changing lives,” Laura adds.

As they look toward the future, the couple remains inspired by the “aha” moments they witness from their students daily. With a reputation for excellence and a mission to adapt and grow, IVY ED Learning Centres stands poised to continue making a difference for many years to come.

Stephanie Puntillo is going against the wave of traditional learning methods to help each child master their milestones

Stephanie Puntillo, founder and owner of Steph’s Study Stars, is on a mission to reshape educational support in her community.

Puntillo’s approach focuses on customized lesson plans tailored to each student’s learning style. “Every child learns differently and at their own pace,” she explained. This

“Our curriculum focuses on returning to the fundamentals of teaching,” she noted, emphasizing hands-on learning that fosters essential skills. “My overall goal is to continue breaking the stigma surrounding tutoring and to let families know that homeschooling is okay, too. Many families have been inspired by this, and they’re happy to have home-schooling available, where our

BRIXEN DEVELOPMENTS INC. WINS BILD AWARD FOR HOME BUILDER OF THE YEAR

Brixen Developments Inc. has achieved meteoric success due to its ‘people first’ philosophy

nIa notable achievement for the flourishing company, Brixen Developments Inc. has been awarded the prestigious BILD Award for Home Builder of the Year 2024, just five years after its founding. Co-founders Alexander D’Orazio and Andrew Iacobelli expressed their excitement about this recognition, highlighting its significance in affirming their commitment to quality, social responsibility and customer satisfaction.

“This award is not just an honour; it reflects the trust our purchasers place in us,” says Iacobelli. “The satisfaction of our purchasers motivates everything we do, from product quality to service.”

The award is significant as it is informed by a purchaser survey, showcasing the direct impact of their work on the clients they serve. “Winning against established names in the industry feels like a David and Goliath moment for us,” says D’Orazio,

underscoring the company’s rapid ascent in a competitive marketplace.

Since its inception in 2019, Brixen Developments has faced its share of challenges, including the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic shortly after launching its first project. However, D’Orazio and Iacobelli noted that their team’s dedication and resilience helped them navigate these obstacles, allowing them to emerge stronger. The importance of their team is proven every single day, as they are caring, positive and professional workers who love working together.

Reflecting on their growth, both founders emphasized. “Our team is absolutely everything,” says Iacobelli, highlighting how the camaraderie and entrepreneurial spirit among the staff have fuelled the company’s success. “We’re fortunate to have experts who believe in our mission and who have left other notable companies to want to be part of Brixen because of how special it is.”

Brixen’s core philosophy revolves around a “people come first” approach, extending beyond their team to the communities they build in. “We aim to create homes that foster connections and enrich lives,” says Iacobelli, stressing their commitment to social responsibility and sustainability in every project.

Looking ahead, Brixen is poised for further growth, with upcoming projects including Duo Phase Two in Brampton and Exhale Residences, now under construction in Mississauga. Both projects are designed to complement their burgeoning communities, with connectivity to higher-order transit and local amenities. In the case of Exhale, its surrounding parks and Lake Ontario in the backyard provide a sense of respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As Brixen Developments continues to make its mark in the home-building industry, its commitment to core values and community engagement positions it as a company to admire. The founders envision a positive legacy that will resonate with families across communities for generations to come. But above all else, their defining feature is that no matter how much they grow, their values of putting people first will never diminish.

THE WOODBRIDGE SCHOOL OF DANCE: NURTURING PASSION AND COMMUNITY

42 years of providing confidence, personalized instruction and opportunity through the art of dance

Nestled in Market Lane Shopping Centre, the Woodbridge School of Dance has become a cornerstone of artistic expression since its founding in 1983. Owners, directors and sisters Deandra Filippo and Olivia Filippo-Paternoster, both former students at the school, are dedicated to continuing its legacy. “We were absolutely in love with dance and ballet,” Deandra recalls of their early years. Their connection

to the school, originally established by Gilly Chaplin, is both personal and profound.

The sisters initially knew Chaplin as a neighbour, but it wasn’t until an unexpected run-in that they discovered she ran a dance school nearby. From ages 4 to 18, the sisters attended her school under her tutelage. However, it was during the sisters’ university years that their inherited family entrepreneurial spirit would spark.

So, with the intention of creating their

own dance school, they sought out Chaplin for advice. It was during that conversation that she revealed she was ready to move on and retire from the school and pass it on. The sisters became a part of her succession plan, and the rest is history.

The sisters emphasize the school’s philosophy of prioritizing education over competition. “One of the big things that sets us apart is our core values,” Olivia explains. “We don’t actually participate in competition or competitive dance.” Instead, they focus on creating a nurturing environment that fosters personal growth, resilience and a love for dance. With approximately 350 enrolled students, their commitment to high-quality dance education is evident.

A key component of their success lies in their faculty. “Our faculty means the world to us,” Deandra asserts. Their instructors’ diverse backgrounds and expertise enrich the students’ experiences, allowing them to explore various styles and disciplines. This collaborative spirit extends to their students, whom they describe as “dedicated and committed to their craft.”

As the sisters work closely together, their dynamic enhances the school’s atmosphere. “We have a lot of fun together,” Olivia says. “I couldn’t see doing this with anyone else. We’re best friends and best colleagues,” Deandra adds.

Their unique balance of management and creativity has led to the Woodbridge School of Dance being an institution that allows its students to thrive in dance and as individuals. The Woodbridge School of Dance stands as a beacon of community, resilience and passion for the arts in a world that often prioritizes accolades.

Inan era where women’s health is often placed into specific categories, Dr. Timea BelejRak’s approach at FemWellness -Integrative Women’s Fertility clinic stands out as a beacon of holistic care. Her journey into this vital field began in high school, inspired by a passion for biology and women’s health. At the heart of her philosophy is the belief that health cannot be compartmentalized. As she explains, “Functional medicine identifies the root causes of problems, treating the body as a connected system rather than dissecting the body into separate parts.”

This perspective is crucial especially in a world where medical advice can vary dramatically and lead to confusion and frustration for patients.

Working alongside her father, Dr. Gagliardi is eager to introduce her unique expertise and compassionate care to the WoodbridgeVaughan community.

Dr. Gagliardi was inspired to pursue optometry by witnessing the profound impact of patient care. “I’ve done every

job in this practice,” she reflects, “I grew up in my father’s practice, and so I got to see all the patients that he got to make a difference with.” Her passion for specialty contact lenses, particularly during her Cornea and Contact Lens Residency and training at BostonSight and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, has driven her to focus on transformative care for patients with complex conditions like keratoconus and dry eye syndrome.

founder, thought of the name “Cirque du Soleil” (literally translated as "Circus of the Sun") while watching a sunset in Hawaii. He then researched the significance of the word “sun” in a dictionary of symbols and found it referred to youth, energy, and dynamism words that defined the troupe perfectly. OVO is a perfect example of their dedication to creating unforgettable dynamic experiences with acrobatic acts that redefine the limits of the human body.

Dedicated Member of Parliament Anna Roberts champions the changes Canadians desperately need

Well-known for her opposition to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Roberts clearly states her advocacy of a “commonsense Conservative” government: “Axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget and stop the crime!”

True leadership is distinguished by transparency, accountability and compassion. Canadians may feel they have been deprived of these virtues for far too long and need their leaders to demonstrate them now more urgently than ever.

Long-time public servant MP Anna Roberts sat down with City Life for an exclusive interview to explore ways in which she was moulded as a leader from a young age, the dramatic challenges Canadians are battling to overcome and what the future has in store for us.

Unsurprisingly, her time is split between her beloved King Vaughan riding and Ottawa, where she represents and voices the concerns of the community in the great halls of the House of Commons. Unlike other leaders we have seen in similar positions of privilege and power, MP Roberts intimately understands the challenges her fellow Canadians face. Many Canadians believe that things have really gotten out of hand and that now is the time to make several critical decisions regarding leadership. After all, who we put at the top reflects the Canadian quality of life.

Q: What does leadership mean to you, and how do you embody that in your role as an MP?

A: In my role, being a leader is listening to my community and being their voice in Ottawa.

Q: How would you describe your childhood?

A: I had the pleasure and privilege of growing up with my grandparents and great-grandmother. My grandfather was a bricklayer and my grandmother raised me. They came to Canada from Italy in the 1950s for Canada’s promise: if you worked hard, you get a nice house, good food and a great life in a safe community. It’s the promise my family received and the promise that I want to restore for [your family].

Q: What role has your upbringing played in your professional career?

A: I was raised by Italian immigrants who came to this country with nothing. They taught me to work hard, be respectful and always help those around me. These values have stuck with me throughout my life and now, as an MP, have helped me embody being a servant of the people.

Q: What makes the King and Vaughan neighbourhoods special to you?

A: The King and Vaughan neighbourhoods are special because of their vibrant communities, rich cultural heritage and the hardworking, resilient people who live here. It’s a place where tradition meets progress and community spirit thrives.

Q: What three words would best describe and capture the essence of a resident in the King Vaughan riding?

A: Resilient, community-minded and hardworking.

Q: Could you share a meaningful story from a recent encounter with a resident that touched you the most?

A: A few weeks ago, while knocking on doors in my community, I met an 89-year-old senior who immigrated to Canada from Italy in the 1960s. He worked tirelessly throughout his life to support his family. However, after nine

years under Trudeau’s government, he is struggling to survive. He showed me his heating bill, revealing that he pays more in carbon tax than for the actual gas to heat his home. During the winter, he has to lower the temperature in his home to save money. He also has to shop very carefully to find the best deals on groceries because he can barely afford food. Unfortunately, stories like his have become all too common after nine years of Justin Trudeau’s leadership.

Q: As you look ahead to 2025, what are your personal goals as an MP?

A: Ultimately, my goal is to defeat Justin Trudeau and the NDP-Liberal government to form a common-sense Conservative majority government with Pierre Poilievre as Prime Minister. This will allow us to eliminate the carbon tax, build the homes that Canadians desperately need, fix the budget and keep repeat violent offenders in jail to stop the crime. Additionally, my private members’ motion M-123 has been put forward, which would recognize March 21st as National Down Syndrome Awareness Day. I would love to see this motion pass.
