The new beaver sits at the entrance to Castor to greet visitors from Highway 12. The art installation was commissioned by the Castor Community Enhancement Society (CCES) and is six ft. (1.8 m) high and was made by Slavo Cech, a well know metallurgist in Edmonton and area. ECA Review/ B. Causley

Castor still seeing water loses The water and gas reconciliations to June 30 were presented to Castor town council at their regular meeting on July 27. The gas system is consistently holding its own. The water system still consistently sees losses, however, to date the town has only half the losses of this time last year.

Spraying concerns

Council received a letter from a local resident voicing her concerns with the

town’s current practice of weed control. The resident does not want any spraying done near her property but CAO Sandi Jackson says that the town only sprays municipal lands, including alleys and property owned by the town. “The town is careful not to spray when there is a wind and we never go onto private property unless authorized. We will continue to follow our spraying practice”. Council will be sending a letter outlining the above to the resident.

Ongoing radio repairs

The communications group is proceeding with the radio repairs. Councillor Nichols, CAO Jackson and the fire chief met with members along highway 12 that use the Nose Hills tower. The analog repeater is not functioning properly and will need to be replaced. Options are being investigated and there will soon be another meeting to discuss the options.

Jackson said she received a call from Lakeland Communications requesting payment for the changeover from digital to analog as the technician feels he performed the job he quoted and should be paid for it. The cost to change back to analog was just under $3,000. “Once we are assured that the radios will work properly and once we receive our privacy codes, Council will review the invoice,” said Jackson.

Pleasington Church sustains hail damage

One of the massive bays of the Hanna Roundhouse was used to serve dinner and for an evening of reminiscing and story telling at the CN Retiree Railroader Reunion on Aug. 8. ECA Review/B.Causley

CN retirees attend railroader reunion Beth Causley

ECA Review Reporter From the outside the roundhouse in Hanna looks derelict and forgotten and there were many people who thought the building was an eyesore to the town and should be knocked down. Sandra Beaudoin felt differently. To her the old building, built in 1913 was a piece of history that shouldn’t be forgotten so she decided to do something about it. Along with many volunteers, they formed the non-profit, Hanna Roadhouse Society and decided to rescue the building. Due to their efforts, the Roadhouse was named a Provincial Historic Resource in June 2015, giving the group access to matching funds from the Alberta Historic Resource Fund and access to the technical expertise of Heritage Conservation Advisors, amongst other benefits. The semicircular building was used by railroads to service locomotives. In the back of the building still lies the old turntable that the engine would pull into which would be turned to allow the trains to go into different bays. While the building was used by the railroad until 1961 and then from 1974 to around 1992 used as a cattle auction market, it has sat unused since then. A group of windows along one side of the building lay open to the elements and birds. With massive amounts of help from volunteers, the Roundhouse was cleaned up and on Aug. 7 - 9 held the CNR Retiree Reunion. On Aug. 8 one of the huge bays was strung with small lights and two of the massive doors at one end were left open, flooding the room with light.

Tables were laid out and a dinner was served for the people who used to work on the railroad, their families and the volunteers who made it all happen. The night was filled with memories from people who had worked on the railroad and in the very building they were in. Martha Robinson stood on the stage, which was surrounded with signs from the old Hanna line and railroad crossing flashing lights. Robinson spoke of what it was like to be an engineers wife and what the railroad meant to her family. With her father and brothers working on the railroad she said she never thought she’d marry a railroader but she did. “It’s been a wonderful life,” she concluded. While some of the building was torn down, the rest of the building needs work done on it and Beaudoin said that the cost was estimated at $810,000. Turn to Different, Pg 16

by Jamie Geddes Pleasington Church sustained substantial damage as hail pummelled the country church. The Pleasington Historical Society (PHS) reports that Pleasington Church located just a little east of Forestburg has sustained significant hail damage from a storm that passed through the area on Monday, July 20. The hail primarily damaged the west and north walls of the church and lifted some shingles. Darol Felzien, the president of the PHS awaits a formal assessment from an insurance adjuster; therefore, the exact cost of repair is not available. Felzien provides an annual accounting of issues pertaining to the Pleasington church and

cemetery when the patrons gather for a special summer program. People donate generously at special public events that the society hosts throughout the year. The donations are used to maintain the needs of the church and cemetery. “We have been so blessed with people who generously support the PHS,” said Rose Marie Oberg, secretary. Throughout the history of the this church whenever a need arose local patrons have offered their time, expertise and money. “We are thankful for those who give so freely to us. They seem to value how the PHS maintains the church and cemetery. They trust us to keep the church going and to continue providing a service for area residents.”

Sarah Halversen, right, and Karen Sernecky of Stettler Gymnastics Club are gearing up for the next preparation phase for October 1 startup of classes. The club will host a couple of volunteer work bees in August to get the building ready. Cleaning, painting and outside yard work are required to spruce up the building. Following that, the club plans to raise enough money for basic equipment and floor coverings, and then add more equipment as funds become available. ECA Review/D.Johnston

Gymnastics Club returns to Stettler Debra Johnston

ECA Review Reporter The Stettler Gymnastics Club is a step closer to starting classes in October with the lease of a building. Sarah Halversen joined Coun. Karen Sernecky, who stepped away from her councillor duties briefly at the Aug. 4 Stettler Town council meeting, to give a progress update to council on the club. A number of coaches and volunteers have stepped forward to assist the club. One of the final hurdles is equipment. Just over $51,000 is needed to outfit the club with enough equipment to host 30 students per session with three coaches per equipment station. According to Sernecky, federal grants are available but the club must raise matching grants in order to apply for them. The club raised $3600 through a online auction and plans to hold other fundraising events throughout the fall. The club also accepts donation through electronic money transfers to stettlergymnastics@gmail.com, or

directly at Vision Credit Union, or by contacting Karen Sernecky at ksernecky@stettler.net. Currently, 150 students are waiting to enroll in the program.

New RCMP member

Council welcomed the newest addition to the Stettler RCMP detachment, Corp. Ryan Koehli. Acting Sgt. Cam Russell introduced Koehli to council, who was previously stationed in Ponoka. Koehli’s addition brings the number of officers at the detachment to eight. Coun. Darcy Bachman asked Sgt. Russell if the reason for the increase in staff was due to more crime or something else. Russell explained that the crime rate has not increased, but the detachment has been short staffed for quite awhile and has finally reached a full compliment. Russell asked the councillors for particular areas of concern. Council agreed that traffic enforcement through school zones and higher visibility were top priorities.

Charges laid in impaired driving causing death

Sheila Taylor, Chair of the Hanna Historical Society waves to the crowd during the Hanna Fall Fair parade on Aug. 7 ECA Review/B.Causley

Coronation receives Canada 150 grant The Town of Coronation received $7,075 for upgrades to the Coronation Recreation Dam Campground under the Government of Canada’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program on July 29. The Town of Coronation will install a line from its water system to the campground, providing the campground with greater access to drinking water.

“The Coronation Dam Campground is a very vital recreational facility within the Town of Coronation. With the help of this funding contribution we will be able to improve the water quality which will complete our present upgrades and solidify the facility as a top-end campground,” said Barry Brigley, Recreation Director for the Town of Coronation.

Criminal charges were laid against a 19 year-old Castor man on Aug. 10 by Coronation RCMP after a lengthy investigation into a single vehicle collision that killed a 21 year-old man from the Northwest Territories on a range road in Paintearth County near Castor on August 30, 2014. The victim, who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the collision, later died in hospital. Dylan Blaze Charpentier has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over .08 per cent causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. He will be making his first appearance in Coronation Provincial Court on Oct. 16, 2015.

Mischief to Vehicles

Seven vehicle tires have been slashed sometime in the night between Aug. 6 - 7 causing $5000 in damages. Provost RCMP received numerous calls between Provost and Hughenden regarding tires slashed on vehicles and are following up on possible suspect vehicle leads at this time.

Mischief under $5000

Suspects damaged the lock of the skating rink in Hayter, Ab. between July 31 and August 3 and damaged a shed door. RCMP responded and found that the door had been damaged by suspects attempting to enter the building and the lock had been pried off. Nothing was stolen from inside the building.

Break, enter, mischief to residence

A person or persons broke into a trailer on 56th Avenue in Provost on the evening of July 22 or the morning of July 23 and caused damage to the inside of the house and an antisemitic mark was left in the residence. The damage to the residence is estimated at over $1000.

Mischief under $5000

The Provost RCMP were called to investigate damage that had occurred at a residence on Railway Ave in Metiskow, Ab. On July 30 it was reported that a residence had its front door kicked in, damaging the door. Nothing was taken from the residence and there was no one home at the time of the incident. The damage is estimated at under $5000.

Theft from residence

Provost RCMP were notified of a break and enter, theft and mischief that occurred on July 30 at a residence in Metiskow. Sometime in the previous three weeks the culprit(s) gained entry by forcing the front door of the residence and caused damage to the inside as well as throwing multiple items around the residence. A camper was parked outside the residence, which was turned on its side and sustained damage. A number of items were also stolen from the location. The residence was not occupied at the time of the incident. The value of the items taken is estimated to be over $3500 and the camper is no longer usable.

Alberta supports producers as they manage challenging growing conditions The Government of Alberta is taking steps to help ensure agriculture producers dealing with dry conditions have resources to feed and water their livestock. Rental fees have been cut in half for Agriculture and Forestry’s Water Pumping Program. The program provides pumps and pipes to help producers get water for

domestic and livestock use by filling their dugouts or other suitable catch basins from nearby water sources. “It’s clear that many producers are facing challenges because of the dry conditions this year, and that’s why we are finding common sense ways to help out farmers during these difficult times,” said Oneil Carlier, Minister of

Great optimism Cont’d from Pg 13 These are just a few examples demonstrating great optimism in the future of Canadian agriculture. The economic benefits delivered by agriculture research and development is part of the Canadian DNA. In 1904 Dr. Charles Saunders’ first planting of Marquis Wheat was 12 seeds. Less than 20 years later there were 20 million acres of Marquis grown in Western Canada and the U.S. This research, these 12 seeds, opened up the Canadian Prairies, delivered jobs and growth and was the backbone of communities that seemed to spring up overnight. Marquis Wheat is a powerful demonstration of what research delivers. I have a sheaf of Marquis Wheat (a little sheaf) on my mantle at home. To me, it is a symbol of what agriculture research will accomplish again

– if society lets it happen.

Agriculture and Forestry. The emergency waterpumping program provides assistance to between 400 and 1,400 clients every year. The fee reduction will apply to anyone who uses the program in the 2015-16 fiscal year and will be retroactive to April 1. Environment and Parks is also working with municipalities to identify additional public lands for grazing purposes to

help increase producers’ access to livestock feed supplies. The measures will allow temporary grazing or haying permits in suitable locations. “We are committed to supporting farmers during this challenging year. Identifying more access to vacant public land for grazing is a practical way to help out farmers who are struggling with the high cost of feeding their livestock,” said

OBITUARY

Her heart was always in Canada If you had the good fortune to know Elaine McKay you would surely consider yourself among the lucky. She died peacefully on July 27, 2015 at Heritage House in Stettler, AB. Elaine Leona Gladys McKay (Hall) was 92 years young. She leaves behind her daughters, Barbara-Ann Clement of Stettler, Darlene Bedel of Hayward, CA; and her son, D’Arcy (Lisa Stringfellow) McKay of Portland, OR; eight grandchildren, Camille Clement, Sheila (Chuck) Scheerschmidt, Tanya

Clement, Ryan Bedel, Derrick Bedel, Margaret Duncan McKay, Ian McKay; and her precious great grandchildren, Trevor Dahl, Levi Owchar, Ally Scheerschmidt, Kenzie Scheerschmidt; her only cousin, Jean Prunkl; numerous nieces, nephews and many other dear friends. Elaine is predeceased by her mom and dad, Tracy and Susan (Wilson) Hall; beloved sisters, Beth LaRose, Bernice Elliot; younger brother, William Hall; Bernard Kelly; husband, Keith McKay; and

son-in-law, Garry Clement. Born in Calgary, Ab. on January 18, 1923, Elaine grew up in and around the Skybo School District. Her family moved to the Peninsula on Buffalo Lake in the late ‘20s and eventually ended up at the Heater Place in early 1940s. Her family were farmers but Elaine didn’t want to settle down; her romance and imagination had a different target. She joined the Canadian Women Army Corps – CWAC ‘42. She served until May ‘46 primarily in Ottawa, On.

Upon discharge from the army, Elaine married Bernard Kelly on December 25, 1946 and to this union a daughter Barbara-Ann was born. Later she met and married Keith Winston McKay on August 19, 1950 and to this union her children, Darlene and D’Arcy were born, and together the family resided in Calgary, Ab. In 1959 Keith was transferred to Seattle, WA, where the family resided for five years. Another job opportunity took the family to Hayward, CA in 1964, where they lived for the next 45 years. Her heart was always in Canada and she returned often for weddings, reunions, new babies and for friends that had passed on. She retired from Kaiser Hospital in Hayward after a long celebrated career of 20 years. Elaine moved back to her home land of Stettler in 2008. She lived in Paragon,

Points West and Heritage House. Elaine’s presence will be missed; her always cheerful light will be remembered forever by all the lucky ones who knew her. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, August 7, 2015 at the Brennen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lyn Lamers of Stettler United Church, officiating. Elaine was laid to rest with her husband, Keith McKay in the family plot in the Donalda Cemetery, Donalda, Ab. The family has requested memorial donations may be made to the Donalda Cemetery, S.T.A.R.S. or a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.brennenfuneralhome.com. Different sections to massive building Cont’d from Pg 2 There are many different sections to the massive building that Beaudoin says could be used for a variety of different functions. The room where the dinner was held could be used for weddings and various functions. The doors open wide enough to allow food trucks to enter for an event. A casino could be held. “Bring in portable seating and you could have any event,” said Beaudoin. The area where the cattle auctions used to be held has had some interest from a theatre group and Beaudoin says that development potential for the spaces are endless. She hopes that various organizations and businesses get involved to help make the Roundhouse active again. The society would like to see historical information throughout the building with an interpretive centre showing a video of people sharing their stories of the railroad, the Roundhouse and Hanna. There are many aspects that the society would like to save in the building, one of them being the scale that was used for the cattle auctions along with the gigantic doors at the back entrance from the turntable, which need to be repaired. People involved with the restoration of the doors wanted to take them out of province to their shop but Beaudoin will suggest that they bring the equipment they need here and involve local people with the craft. Her thoughts are that the company come here and teach classes on restoring the doors. It would bring another resource and job potentials to

residents of Hanna while doing the job of restoring the doors. “It’s not just the doors,” Beaudoin says, “there is a lot of work for them to do here.” All the work will be done in different stages keeping it as original as possible and non of the funds are from tax dollars. Those who need to sell livestock because of feed shortages can defer a portion of their 2015 sale proceeds of breeding livestock for one year to help offset the cost of replenishing that stock in the following year. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has a number of online resources at www.agriculture. alberta.ca to assist producers with decision making, including crop and moisture reports, planning information for dry conditions and a hay and pasture directory.
