Home for the holidays
By Lynn Still, Promotions Director Clarkson BIA “Home for the Holiday’s” means something different things to each of us, involving family, friends, good times and traditions. Perhaps you are planning to visit where you grew up, or maybe you are anticipating family members coming home to you over the holidays. Many of us have sons and daughters away at school and are looking forward to their return with all the noise and commotion that accompanies them. Younger children are even more excited about being home with no school to attend! The Holiday Season is a time for traditions. Our family tradition is to host Boxing Day Dinner for our extended families. Last year, after over 30 years of Boxing Day dinners, I thought it would be nice to host Christmas Dinner instead. My two sons were aghast! It would be unthinkable not to host Boxing Day, it was a part of who we are! And so the tradition continues… Whatever family events you are planning for this holiday season, the over 150 businesses of Clarkson Village, along with the Clarkson BIA, wish you a very magical and happy time filled with laughter, smiles and great memories. And whilst you are “home for the holiday’s” we invite and encourage you to visit and re-acquaint yourselves with what your village has to offer and shop local.

Issues associated with shopping on-line. BEWARE!
Fake Online Reviews – Be skeptical of reviews that lack detail, or are too positive. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter may provide a stronger, direct relationship to people’s opinions. Check the source - does it link to the reviewer’s profile and previous reviews or a social media page that shows the reviewer is real? Lack of Full Cost Disclosure – Additional fees like shipping, may be hidden until late in the checkout process. Remember there is “no free lunch”, in other words you’re going to pay for delivery one way or the other. Counterfeit Goods – If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Order Never Arrives – Millions of items get lost in shipping every year. Identity Theft – Identity theft and fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain. If someone steals your debit card number, your entire checking account is exposed. Within minutes, identity thieves can drain your account and set you back financially for years.

Clarkson Village BIA Halloween Fun F Fest By Albert Peres
On October 31st the Clarkson Village BIA held a Halloween Fun Fest. The event was supported by over 65 businesses, organizations and the churches located along Lakeshore Road West, between Inverhouse Drive and Meadow Wood Road. Many area families turned out for this very popular annual event. The fun was held between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, and started with an initial surprise and loot bag. Children were encouraged to visit merchants in the village to collect more goodies and engage in activity along the way. This year the activities included an Italian singer, a pumpkin carving display, carnival games, colouring contests, a photo booth, bouncy slides and helpings of cookies and hot chocolate. An afternoon of sunshine contributed to the success of the event. The families, volunteers, merchants and the Business Improvement Area Board of Management had a tremendous amount of fun. All participants were encouraged to collect and donate two or more nonperishable items for the local Food Bank. The Clarkson Village BIA consists of a team of like-minded business people and property owners from within the Village who volunteer their time to promote the community as a shopping district. The Association and its staff along with the Councillor for Ward 2 maintain a constructive relationship with Mississauga City Council, the Peel Regional Police and other groups and organizations that affect the Clarkson community. Councillor Karen Ras, Ward 2 Update Clarkson Village Study Since being elected as your Councillor, I have had numerous contacts with residents on the subject of the Clarkson Village Study.
for the City to now argue for 4 storeys on the entire property when the City had previously agreed to 8.
The appeals of the Clarkson Village Study Official Plan Amendment 9 are scheduled to be heard by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) on November 23rd, 2015. There may or may not be an outcome by time this article gets published, but I would like to take the opportunity to update you on this subject.
City Council felt there was a greater merit to defend its previous decision at the Ontario Municipal Board to limit the height on the south side, west of Meadow Wood Road. This matter is far from completed and at this point, the future is uncertain but I am determined to ensure that we get this right and build a Clarkson village that is worthy of the neighbourhood we love.
The Provincial Government’s “Places to Grow Act requires that official plans have intensification in certain corridors especially near transit hubs. The nearby Clarkson GO station is a critical transit hub and Clarkson was identified as a Community Node capable of accepting greater density. That is why, in 2010, City Planning Staff recommended through the Clarkson Village Study that there be up to a six-storey built-form in the area. In 2014, the previous Council voted to cap the height of all buildings up to four stories, setting the stage for the appeals by some of the land owners to the OMB. The City, through independent legal counsel, met with the property owners to attempt to reach a compromise and failing that, to prepare for the hearing. City Council accepted a negotiated settlement for the RioCan site (the Homesense plaza). One part of the proposal calls for an eight storey residential building which would also support ground-level commercial retail uses. The building would be stepped back to overcome any shadowing concerns for the neighbours. The settlement plan also calls for the development of a community square on the site that would become a hub for the entire Clarkson Village. It is important to note that in 2010, the OMB issued a decision approving an eight storey retirement residence containing ground floor commercial uses. This development did not proceed at the time but legally it is difficult

Southside Shuffle 2016
Is Christmas Sustainable Submitted by Michael’s Hair Body Mind
Celebrating 18 years The Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle, Port Credit’s Annual Blues and Jazz Festival has been bringing world-class performers to the banks of the Credit River in Mississauga for 17 years. The brainchild of Juno Award winning bluesman Chuck Jackson of Downchild Blues Band, the festival has presented performances from the likes of Grammy Award winners Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Funk Brothers and many many more.
We all often reflect back on Christmas when we were children. When the magic of Christmas was truly appreciated. There were no Gameboys, no iPads, no cell phone, no computers, and no concerns in over indulgence about the décor, the gifts, the meal or the waste. The latest technology at that time was the introduction of the television and this was a fortunate luxury afforded by few. The rest of us enjoyed undistracted quality time with those we loved while Elvis sounds were the background of traditional Christmas fare. Our Christmas list to Santa was shorter. We always received the necessities our parents knew we needed and waited with baited breath and fingers crossed that something on that short list would magically appear under the tree. Perhaps this is the year you decide to make Christmas simpler. Maybe this is the year you want to make a difference. What can you do and where do you start? Think GREEN. Is your tree sustainable? The stats are in, a real tree is actually more environmentally friendly. Artificial trees have 3 times more impact on climate change and resource depletion. Look to choose trees grown without pesticides and herbicides. Illuminate your tree with LED lights. Open your heart and your home to many. Cooking your Christmas feast in one kitchen is more energy conscious then in 3 stoves. Do some of your shopping online to reduce wasting gas and carbon emissions. Let’s not forget all of those impulse purchase gifts that you give which will eventually end up as landfill. Make your gift giving more appealing and thoughtful by starting or finishing with something homemade. Consider echo friendly wrapping options. Craft it yourself and make the presentation unforgettable. Look outside the “present”. Perhaps it’s a beautiful scarf or a holiday table cloth to be enjoyed for years to come to adorn your gift. Maybe you purchase some lovely keepsake boxes or baskets that can be used for other purposes, the sustainable memory of the treasure it once beheld will last forever. Maybe your present requires nothing to adorn it. Tickets of any kind for movies, shows, events and gift certificates for the much needed me time once the festivities and the season wind down. If none of these suggestions appeal to you then consider purchasing quality gifts that will endure the test of time and can be passed on and enjoyed by future generations.
Preparations are already underway for our 18th annual festival and there are a few ways you can get involved. Friends of The Festival Show your support for the Southside Shuffle by becoming a Friend Of The Festival. You receive acknowledgement on the Festival website and in the official Shuffle program and help keep the Street Shuffle free! 2016 Festival Sponsorship Position your business as a community leader with your involvement in this world-class international event. Reach tens of thousands of customers through a customized sponsorship of the Southside Shuffle and our many year-round events! We approach sponsorships as true partnerships, designed to hit the mandates of our sponsors, our audience, our vision and mission. Corporate Hosting Entertain groups of clients, employees, prospects and new recruits at one of the Festival’s premier VIP venues. Enjoy reserved seating at an optimal vantage point for you and your guests.
Just remember on December 25 after all the hustle and bustle of putting it all together, the worry, the shopping, and the cooking for this much anticipated day…….your family still could survive with fewer presents and a sincere celebration. The greater pleasures at Christmas are found in the simpler things. Enjoy a sustainable Christmas, celebrate the people we love, remember the ones we’ve lost and treasure the moments we share.

Heart House Hospice Bring It Home sign unveiling
Charles Sousa and BIAs Recognize Outstanding Businesses
By Albert Peres
Star of Mississauga South Awards Ceremony Honours Local Entrepreneurs
A grassy field, the former location of the old Pheasant Run School, was the site of a sign unveiling and the new Bring It Home capital campaign launch announcement. Heart House Hospice is purchasing the property that sits amidst a beautiful park located in the Winston Churchill Boulevard and Burnhamtorpe Road West area. The location will become the future permanent home of the organization.
In a ceremony on Wednesday, October 14th at Lakeshore Convention Center, Mississauga South MPP Charles Sousa, the Port Credit BIA and the Clarkson BIA awarded outstanding local small businesses. Winners of the fourth annual Star of Mississauga South Awards were recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the community. Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey and Ward 2 Councillor Karen Ras were also on hand for the celebrations. Members of the public nominated their favourite local small business. Nominations were reviewed by an independent community panel, including Mississauga Board of Trade, City of Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre, and the Ontario BIA Association.
Hearth House Hospice provides a unique and much appreciated service to residents of the City of Mississauga. A Hospice brings a multi-disciplinary approach and provides the special kind of medical care needed by people who are terminally ill. This level of care attends to a patient’s pain and physical symptoms as well as to their emotional and spiritual needs.
“Small and medium-sized businesses do more than provide good jobs. They are really the backbone of our entire community here in Mississauga South. Congratulations to all the award winners and nominees who are the best and brightest in our vibrant local small business community.” — Hon. Charles Sousa, MPP Mississauga South
Heart House Hospice currently provides wellness programming, complementary therapies, spiritual care, and counseling, as well as, in-home and caregiver support, an understand grief program directed to children living in a home where someone is dying, and bereavement support. The Bring It Home campaign with its ambitious $18 million fundraising target, will allow Heart House Hospice to build a well-designed modern facility that will include the addition of ten specialized hospice beds as a residential component to their program and start a sustainability fund that will ensure hospice care will remain in the place for the residents of Mississauga and surrounding area.
“Port Credit BIA is proud to champion entrepreneurship and small business. We appreciate the passion that drives them and the contributions that they make to our local economy and community. The Stars of Mississauga South business awards give us an opportunity to recognize small businesses that make an impact on our community.” — Ellen Timms, General Manager, PCBIA “The Clarkson BIA is thrilled to have worked alongside Charles Sousa and the Port Credit BIA to recognize and celebrate the achievements and amazing business talents that make up our incredible community in Mississauga South. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and nominees and thank you for your contribution to our community.” — Daniel McCartney, Chair, Clarkson BIA
John Snobelen, former MPP stated, ‘This project will address an important need in our community. It will not only provide ten residential hospice beds but it will insure that family care and support is provided. I am very impressed with the breadth of services and the engagement of volunteers in the provision of those services.’ Mayor Bonnie Crombie noted, ‘Mississauga is a growing City and residents need important frontline healthcare, including modern and accessible residential hospice care here in our community.’
Stars of Mississauga South Winners in the following categories: • Go Green Business Excellence – The Little Green Schoolhouse; • Community Impact Excellence – Marcie Costello Photography; • Service Excellence – Lowe’s School of Music; • Hospitality Excellence - Shore Grill and Grotto; • Rising ‘Star’ – Kamp K-9; • Networking Excellence/ MBOT Business Connector – Lynn Still, Sutton Quantum; • Home-Based Business Excellence- Johnny Max Entertainment Services
The organization faces two challenges, both of them monetary. First they must complete the purchase of the property, which is currently held under a lease-to-buy arrangement. Once this is done, they must collect the funds for the construction of the residential hospice. President of the Board of Heart House Hospice, Colin Campbell said, ‘It is a great honour to have Mayor Bonnie Crombie take a leadership role with our campaign. We are also tremendously pleased that John Snobelen will lead our journey. They join a growing cabinet of committed community leaders including Saverio Di Mondo, Rabbi Lawrence Englander, Paul Fletcher, Doug Kilner, Todd Ladner, Norm Loberg, Jim Murray, Myles Robinson, Kirin Singh, Cheryl Englander, Domenic Ruso, Charlene Shevlen and Randy Wright. Divorce and the Matrimonial Home By Theresa Baird – Broker Keller Williams Realty Solutions 647-298-0997
In continuing with my series to showcase my highly capable and effective service provider team whom I work with, I wanted to introduce you to a very unique aspect of Mary Krauel’s business.
education to Certified Financial Planners. But what allows Mary to really relate to my divorcing clients is her own painful experience of divorce. It was after spending 4 years in the legal system trying to reach settlement in her own divorce that caused her to believe there was a better way for couples to end their marriages and relationships. It is this motivation that drives her to help people avoid the same experience and cost, and instead focus on creating healthy new beginnings with financial security.
One of the primary reasons for real estate transactions is brought about as a result of clients who are facing a divorce. I have entrusted Mary Krauel, owner of PRM Mediation and a highly skilled, empathetic divorce mediator, with my clients. They need her to guide them through one of the most difficult journeys in their lives.
Here is what some clients have said about Mary: “My husband and I met Mary Krauel when we were in the process of separating after a twenty-nine year marriage. Mary showed us how we could indeed deal with this difficult, emotional and life-altering situation with dignity, and negotiate with each other in good faith. For someone considering separation and/or divorce, I would highly recommend mediation. I do not believe you could find a mediator more competent, gracious and knowledgeable than Mary. She made our experience as amicable as possible and we are both very thankful and appreciative.” “No other avenue and/or person has done what Mary Krauel has done for us during our uphill battle of our divorce process. Mary helped us eliminate conflict and bitterness with each other during the parenting plan phase and helped us to focus on the main priority: our children. …. I have and will continue to recommend Mary to anyone in the same situation so they do not have to experience what I went through with a lawyer/court. THANK YOU and my children thank you too as they see a more friendly relationship between their mom and dad!”

Mary says that the largest asset for most people is the matrimonial home. It is also the one that has the greatest emotional attachment. It is where the couple raised the kids. Mary explains it is also the most illiquid asset. A divorce can result in one, two or three real estate transactions if one party cannot afford to keep the matrimonial home. But how do you decide? How can you afford to keep the kids in the same school area? How does the matrimonial home impact my cash flow? What are my options? These are only a few of the many questions Mary helps my clients get answered.

The Gratifying Harvest Journal
By Gordon O. Stockman, BComm., CPA, CA, CFP, CIM Vice President – Financial Planning, Efficient Wealth Management Inc. Efficient Wealth Management has created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. We thought a column devoted to this pleasing idea would be great. Below is a repeat of a popular article previously published.
We want our clients’ money to last as long as needed to support enjoying their lives to the fullest. Spending patterns are unique to all families and will never match the timing of the portfolio performance. Your trip to China may well coincide with the year after the poorest results experienced by the portfolio. Do you delay the trip until the portfolio rebounds, or do you go and then adjust for it in the future? Will you be more active in your 50`s and 60`s or should you delay your dreams until your 80`s when the funds will be more certainly be available?
Spending Is Life! In a previous Value for Money Investing, we wrote about the concept of Gamma. Gamma attempts to quantify the increase in investment returns from making “intelligent financial planning decisions” during retirement. One of the key “decisions” is having a dynamic withdrawal strategy. In simple terms, this is an adjustable plan for using the wealth represented by your investments. A common rule of thumb (and I just hate rules of thumb) is to use a withdrawal rate of 4% of the portfolio at start of retirement (a static approach). You then adjust this initial amount for inflation. A dynamic strategy would adjust based on market performance or expected investor longevity. Annually, you adjust your withdrawals to maintain portfolio survivability and changing mortality data.
The pattern of your life may well dictate that you need to use your retirement funds more in your 50`s than in your 70`s, to say support early retirement. Government benefits kick in during your 60`s. Many of our clients have a declining withdrawal plan that starts high and finish low due to this. They are active as early seniors, but less active and less travelled as they age.
The above observations about using a dynamic withdrawal strategy are correct and we embrace them, but as set out, apply to research bunnies interested in dying having spent the later part of their life slaves to the different quantity of money (theoretically) available each year. The Gratifying Harvest notion. Our clients are people, not research bunnies. Thus their lifestyle needs, each and every year, will drive the future resultant portfolio survivability, not the other way around. The changing mortality data is for the population as a whole and my clients, being unique, will not die on that prescribed day. In other words, we need our money to last until we are done with it, which might not be when we die. We also need to use our money both unevenly and in a pattern very different than that prescribed by the research, to enjoy our life. So, in practice, we do annually examine the portfolio performance and our client`s withdrawals to retest portfolio survivability and changing mortality requirements.
So your portfolio survivability per the mortality tables is dependent on uneven performance patterns that require adjustment to the withdrawals being made. In contrast, your lifestyle needs dictate a withdrawal pattern that is unique to your family, uneven, ever changing and sometimes unforeseen. Our challenge is to assist clients in matching THEIR needs to THEIR portfolio to obtain the optimal balance between portfolio longevity, portfolio performance and enjoying life. Our clients are just like you. Middle class families, with hard earned and hard saved retirement assets, which are essential to the enjoyment of their lives each year. As an investment professional, I should be pleased to report, that in the last year their portfolio results were great and most achieved X% in their portfolios. But that is not important. The real proud moments came from their lives. We had clients visit China, cruise waterways in Russia, explore Africa, relax in the Greek Islands, and so many more places. Second homes were purchased in Florida, Mexico, and further afield. Clients moved to sunnier locales. Weddings were paid for. Children received help with home purchases. Universities were entered and left. Golf games improved. Sailboats, airplanes, RVs and fancy cars bought (no trains that I know of ). Life has been lived and FUNded.
