www.clarksonbia.com

The Friends of the Museums of Mississauga are pleased to announce another summer of great music “On the Verandah” at Benares Historic House. Come early and enjoy the beautiful grounds of this magnificent house, wander the lawns, enjoy the flowers and the atmosphere of peace and serenity. Bring along your lawn chairs, perhaps a picnic supper and choose your spot on the lawn in front of the Verandah. We even have a few picnic tables for your use and a concession stand for light refreshments. Every Friday evening we welcome a new musician or musical group; some love playing “On the Verandah” so much that they return season after season. This year we celebrate our 10th anniversary of these concerts and some of our musicians have been with us each year. We have a wonderful selection of music; something to suit all tastes. With thirteen concerts it is impossible to name them all, but we have a brass sextet, several folk singers, A Children’s Choir and a Youth Orchestra, a clarinet quartet, acoustic guitars, a jazz vocalist, a classical violinist, an award winning guitarist and more. You will hear music from Beethoven to Gershwin; from the 18 century to the 21st. Our musicians have performed around the globe and have won recognition and awards for outstanding concert performances. Benares Historic House is located at 1507 Clarkson Road N. in Mississauga. At intermission, we bring around our collection baskets for your donations. We suggest $5.00 - $10 per person, $15-$20.00 per family. I promise they are worth much more. After expenses, the money we raise provides busses to transport Peel students to the Museums for our inspiring educational programmes which introduce the children to Mississauga’s interesting local history. For more information, call the Museums of Mississauga at 905-615-4860, ext. 2110 or visit www.museumsofmississauga.com.

Heritage Mississauga Announces Project Celebrating Mississauga’s Cultural Heritage

Beauty and history of pearls By Vanig Jelilian, Lorne Park Jewellers

By: Lindsay Howe

Pearls represent beauty, pearls represent elegance, and pearls are the magnificence of the sea

Heritage Mississauga’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Thursday, May 15th at “The Grange”, the historic Robinson-Adamson House located at 1921 Dundas Street West.

Pearls are long known as the Queen Gems and for centuries, have always been a part of a Royal look. Before the creation of cultured pearls, natural pearls were so rare and expensive that they were reserved almost only for the noble and very rich. In the history of Egypt, decorating with mother of pearls was used as far as back 4200 BC. The Romans and Egyptians praised pearls above all other gems. In Roman history, Vitellius financed an entire military campaign just by one of his mother’s pearl earrings.

The business meeting was held, followed by the annual organizational review, and election of members of the Board of Directors. Following the business portion of the night, Heritage Mississauga made a surprise announcement involving plans for an exciting new project in the works! Celebrating Mississauga’s Cultural Heritage Project aims to preserve and celebrate Mississauga’s diverse cultural heritage. The goal of the three-year project is to build awareness by supporting community partnerships and developing a citywide cultural network. The project is made possible by a very generous grant from Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). At the AGM Margherita Bialy, volunteer for OTF presented a commemorative plague to Heritage Mississauga President Barbara O’Neil and offered her congratulations.

In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered the new World. We will always remember how pearls have played a part in our history. When Christopher Columbus wanted to discover the horizon and new routes to East, he was looking for financier. Queen Elizabeth of Spain gave Christopher Columbus her pearls to finance the trip of Santa Maria, then discovering the west, the new World and now here we are.

The Board of Directors had an opportunity to speak about Heritage Mississauga’s plans for the upcoming project, as well as express their gratitude to Ontario Trillium Foundation for their generous support. Jayme Gasper, Executive Director of Heritage Mississauga discussed the project’s initiatives to showcase the fascinating and rich cultural heritage of our city. Outcomes of Celebrating Mississauga’s Cultural Heritage Project include an exciting Heritage Film Series, a set of educational resource booklets, and a Cultural Guide. What is unique about the Cultural Guide is that it will bring together members of all communities and groups, providing material, images, text and data for the guide. This collaboration of cultures celebrates each group’s unique contributions to Mississauga life.

South Sea pearls, Tahitian pearls, fresh water pearls, and natural pearls are different in colour and shape depending on the region. In the early 1900 cultured pearls were created in Japan by farming in the seas. Along with the natural pearls, South Sea and Tahitian pearls are the most expensive. The luster, cleanness and size are the most important part of the value. Pearls come in different colours and shapes.

Heritage Mississauga is a not for profit charitable organization dedicated to promoting our local heritage. Heritage Mississauga brings awareness to our heritage, while working to foster and maintain Mississauga’s sense of community, pride and history. Visit Heritage Mississauga online to stay up to date on news and events www.heritagemississauga.com.

Tahitian pearls often called black pearls, are found in the turquoise coloured lagoons of French Polynesia in the South Seas. They are shimmering with peacock green and purple overtones that give beauty on a ladies neck or for jewellery designs combined with precious gems and metals. Pearls are admired. If we pay attention, most of ladies with a title wear pearls on their neck or ears. It is the trend and tradition that follows. Visit Lorne Park Jewellers where you will find fine selections of all varieties of pearls in all colours, qualities and prices. In jewellery making, pearls have taken a popular place in combination with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Another popular combination is with different kinds and shapes of semi-precious gems, set in yellow or white gold. It has become very creative, with beauty of colours in rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets or necklaces. The jewellery designees introduced to the beauty of the sea, can see and feel the life of beauty. For more information on pearls and other precious stones, contact Lorne Park Jewellers at 905-891-0001 or visit www.lorneparkjewellers.ca.

CLARKSON Red Day Renew, Energize and Donate is a Keller Williams world-wide initiative dedicated to improving local communities. On May 8th, Keller Williams Real Estate Offices around the world closed their doors for the sole purpose of giving back to their community. Keller Williams Realty Solutions staff set out to take on two projects with special requirements. The first was a family in need of a major change to their home in order to bring their 1 year old son, Cristiano, home from The Hospital. Cristiano was born 26 weeks early, weighing only 910g and was transferred to the NICU unit. The combination of a complication with premature lungs and a condition called Omphalocele (organs growing into his umbilical cord), concerned the doctors. The doctor’s outcome was that Cristiano is incompatible with life and that they should consider end of life care. The family decided to give their son the chance to live, irrespective of how it may affect their lives. The second initiative of the Keller Williams Realty Solutions team was to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Society, and to spend time with the Day Program Participants. The Keller team and volunteers set out their spring cleaning efforts at the Alzheimer’s facility, with raking, weeding and cleaning the yard and area. Decks were power washed and in perfect shape for the Day Program participants to enjoy the spring and summer months of the facility inside and outside as well.

Of course, no program can be successful without the initiatives of the organizers, support staff, participants and sponsors. Keller Williams proudly acknowledges sponsors who donated food, equipment, supplies, services or their time. A special Thank You to Benjamin Moore, Mr. Sub, No Frills, 241 Pizza, Rabba, Move By Design, The Clarkson Pump, Real Wealth Mortgage, Home Coach, Toronto Metro Painting, RBC, Canadian Tire, Dominion Lending Centres, PMG Print Production, Image & Design and The OddJob Guy. On Saturday, May 3rd Walden Circle Retirement Community in Clarkson hosted an exciting 1st Anniversary CIRCUS-themed Celebration to thank their friends, neighbours and residents for a tremendously successful first year. Guests enjoyed live entertainment by magicians, acrobats, clowns and more. Shortly after the Anniversary Celebration, Walden Circle Retirement introduced “Make a Wish” program for their residents. Residents were asked them if there is something they’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had the chance yet, and the staff would do their best to grant those wishes. On May 22nd the first wish was granted. Kathleen Wood enjoyed a screening of the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a special Mango Lassi “mocktail” and a delicious Indian themed dinner. In addition, local community partners have been a huge help and support in making other wishes happen. Two residents wished for a relaxing spa massage and these are being sponsored by Sandra Elsie- Devine- Retirement Financial Planner, Evelyn Thoy from Downsizing Diva, and Scott McNabb from Homewatch CareGivers Mississauga. Sheridan Club Condominiums By J. Knox On Sunday, March 23rd, Sheridan Club Condominiums at 1271 Walden Circle in Clarkson, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the official opening of the condominiums that took place on March 11, 1989. Sheridan Club Board members and residents Ron and Andrea Kawchuk, Cathy Banks and Judy Tutty organized a wine and cheese reception in the lobby of the 112-unit condominium, for both current and former residents.

Lorne Park Library Presents On June 19, 2014 at 7 pm, Lorne Park Library will present, Nepal’s Wild West: A Slide Presentation on the Dolpo and Mustang Region. Home of the elusive snow leopard and a flourishing medieval Tibetan culture, Dolpo is a wild and magical land hidden behind the Himalaya and inaccessible for much of the year.

Resident Mary Lou Paul who decided to move to Sheridan Club Condominium a little over two years ago says it’s the best decision she has ever made. “I love it, the lifestyle here is great. I was in Port Credit in a house when we downsized and moved here. I researched a lot of places and found that common areas are not available in a lot of condominiums. We often come down in the afternoon and just sit and chat and meet people,” says Mary Lou. Sheridan Club is a uniquely social condominium whereby residents pitch in to run and attend bi-weekly coffee socials, barbeques and other gatherings. Recently the condominium was able to install a chair lift on a flight of stairs leading to the building’s main floor common party room, allowing easy access for all residents. Among those proudly enjoying the afternoon’s anniversary was the condominiums builder Peter Shiskov of Napev Construction. Peter and his wife Nina have lived in the building for 26 years. “That’s a testament to the quality of construction of the building right there, that Mr. Shiskov, the builder himself lives here. The construction is holding up very well, condo fees are very low and we have a very large amount of money in the reserve fund for all kinds of contingencies. I think it was pretty well built in terms of the quality,” says Ron Kawchuk. In terms of lifestyle “Everyone here is great, very nice and sociable. This place is like a village inside a village (Clarkson)” says Ron. Congratulations to all at the Sheridan Club Condominium!

The neighbouring Kingdom of Mustang offers traditional Tibetan culture set against a backdrop of stunning high-altitude desert scenery. The evening’s presentation will provide an in-depth look at the landscapes, mountains, people, cultures, monasteries and wildlife of these fascinating and infrequently visited regions. The show will be presented by Chris Beall, a freelance photographer, writer, lecturer and Himalayan mountain guide with more than 20 years’ experience in Nepal. Although Chris is a resident of Stayner Ontario, he spends most of the year travelling and photographing overseas. His photos and articles have been published in books, magazines and newspapers around the world, including National Geographic, Time Magazine, BBC Publications, the Globe and Mail, and Lonely Planet Publications. Tickets are $10. Please phone 905 615-4845 for more information. Lorne Park Library is located at 1474 Truscott Dr. Putting an end to violence and sexual abuse against women, one step at a time Local residents and business groups walked the streets of Clarkson for the 4th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraising event. This event took place on Saturday, May 31st at Clarkson Crossing (Southdown Road and Lakeshore Road). Walk a Mile in Her Shoes raises money for abused women and children and promotes awareness of this abuse. The money raised goes to Armagh House, a second-stage housing resource in the Peel Region for women and children who have suffered abuse or sexual violence.

Inspiration at Camp Enterprise Students from across the city converged on the University of Toronto – Mississauga Campus for a unique business workshop during Camp Enterprise 2014, which was held from May 7-10. Organized by The Rotary Clubs of Mississauga, the four-day workshop taught high school students in Grade 11 and 12 important leadership and business skills, and included keynote speeches by inspirational speakers, panel discussions, workshops, creativity sessions, business games, presentations and an introduction to the professions and career opportunities facing young people.

Men literally walked a mile in her shoes, as they were expected to walk the mile distance in a pair of high heels. Countless males came out in support of The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. According to the Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse, 1in 4 women will experience abuse in a relationship in their lifetime, and only 25% of these abuse incidents are reported. The walk raises awareness for men, so that they can better understand and appreciate women’s experience. The walk helps to open communication and discussions about sexualized violence and its causes. A special thanks to all of the men who came out to Walk a Mile in her Shoes to support putting an end to violence against women and girls.

Camp Enterprise has provided high school students with unique experiences in teambuilding, leadership, business principles and dealing with the challenges of life and business. The objective of Camp Enterprise is to explore, expose, challenge and awaken interest and imagination on the whole concept of business and private enterprise. The Top 3 Landscaping Trends Thinking of Selling Your Home? Your Curb Appeal or that Amazing Backyard could net you more Money in Your Pocket. 1. Livable Outdoor Spaces Many homeowners are treating their patios and backyards as another room of the house. By adding outdoor kitchens with pizza ovens and using decorative planters and garden art, you can put your unique stamp on the space. How can you make your space more livable?

3. Gardening for Wellness It’s no secret that whole foods are the key to good health. Many people have turned to their own yards to grow the fruits and vegetables required for good nutrition. Not only are you able to see the fruits of your labor grow and flourish, but gardening can also burn up to 400 calories an hour. So get outdoors and get growing. Preparing your soil is the key to yields of healthy plants. To check if your soil is healthy, dig a hole and look for earthworms. The more worms you see, the healthier your soil is. Or, send a sample to a lab for a complete analysis of the nutrients in your soil. Plant what you love. Make a list of the fruits and vegetables that you love, before you shop for seedlings. This will help to ensure that most of what you grow is consumed. Some popular plants to start with include pole beans, squash, tomatoes, peppers, salad greens, collards, herbs and strawberries.

Add a deck or patio. Great for entertaining or for lounging during your free time, a deck or patio is a must-have feature. If natural stone or brick patio pavers are out of your budget, concrete pavers are a budget-friendly alternative. Enhance your lighting. Set the mood and enjoy your patio into the evening with the right lighting. LED and solar are becoming increasingly popular. Use strings of lights, torches or LED glass pavers that can be incorporated into the hardscape. Also don’t forget about your comfort. Homeowners are turning their patios into outdoor living rooms. Out with the plastic patio furniture; in with over-sized sofas, armchairs and tables made for the outdoors.

For all local condo owners, No yard, No problem! If you don’t have the yard to grow a garden, grow what you love in containers instead. Find a sunny spot on your deck or patio, and arrange your portable garden for optimal light.

2. Low Maintenance Landscapes Water conservation efforts in many areas of the country are prompting homeowners to make their landscapes drought- tolerant. One of the benefits of these landscapes is that they are lower in maintenance.

Green grass, plants and flowers in your front yard welcome a potential buyer when they visit your home. They can be wowed by that great first impression. If they proceed through a clean, neat and tidy interior and then finish with a backyard visit that has cozy patio and comfy chairs, it is more than likely you will have a buyer ready to present an offer on your home.

Native plants that are typically found in your area will have adapted to soil, water and local weather conditions. It is easier to care for them and, if perennials, you can enjoy them year after year.

Practice xeriscaping - this is ideal for areas that don’t naturally get a lot of water, xeriscaping utilizes low-water-use plants, native grasses, mulch and other elements to create a low-water, low maintenance landscape. In areas where grass just will not grow, try installing artificial turf. It looks like grass but requires less maintenance and water.

Michaels Hair Body Mind pays it forward in 2014 to CVC and The City of Mississauga

New hospice on the horizon in Mississauga For people with incurable life-limiting illnesses, a palliative care hospice can make an enormous difference.

Michaels Hair Body Mind is proud to celebrate 55 years in the Clarkson Community.

They are places where those with conditions like advanced cancers that are beyond the reach of curative medicine can spend the final few days of their lives in warmth and with dignity. If all goes to plan, Mississauga will, in the next few years, be marking the opening of a new hospice in the city.

This year the team wants to say thank-you to all of our patrons who allowed us to make you look and feel beautiful by paying back to the community. The City of Mississauga has been battling nature’s effects from the ice storm of 2013 and the eminent demise of Rattray Marsh which has been ravaged by the ash borer beetle. Rattray Marsh is the only remaining part of Lake Ontario’s Waterfront trail between Toronto and Burlington Ont.

Mississauga-based Heart House Hospice has taken a huge step towards realizing its long-held dream of building a residential hospice. Heart House recently announced that it has secured a location on which it hopes to build a 10-bed facility. The charity — formerly known as Hospice of Peel — has launched “Bring it home,” a fiveyear fundraising drive to finance the building, which will be constructed on the site of the nowclosed Pheasant Run Public School in the city’s Erin Neighbourhood.

This precious vulnerable 90 acres of Lake Ontario shoreline is an environmentally sensitive wetland located within the Clarkson Community. Many will remember the days that the community saved these wetlands from developers who wanted to fill it in and turn it into a subdivision. Others may remember it as an educational excursion. The marsh is home to many native species of trees which include oak, birch, willow, hemlock, maple and ash. Bird life is abundant in the marsh and constantly changes with the season. Other wildlife that has made the marsh home is rabbits, beavers, deer and the occasional fox. In recent years the marsh has also become home to a predatory species known as the Emerald Ash Borer. This shiny emerald green beetle kills ash trees. This invasive pest is native to Asia and first noticed in North America in 2002. Once this predatory pest takes hold of a tree the inevitable demise and destruction is a rapid 2 year death. Rattray Marsh has a 70% vulnerability rate of becoming nonexistent if something isn’t done immediately.

For nearly three decades Heart House has been providing in-home palliative care and family support in Mississauga and neighbouring Brampton. Heart House executive director Theresa Greer recently spoke to The Mississauga News and explained some of the advantages of the new location: “It’s close to the hospital, it’s on a bus route and it’s in a residential community with a parklike setting,” she told the newspaper. “People will be able to look out and see sunshine and trees and see kids playing and see life. Just because people are at the end of their life cycle does not mean they have stopped living.”

Michaels Hair Body Mind chose the month of April to launch a month long fundraising campaign. All monies donated going towards repairing the ravages of the Ice Storm and into our community. This campaign managed to bring in over $18,000. The team at Michaels has decided that the most vulnerable and prevalent issue is The Rattray Marsh and reforesting in our community.

The Healing Cycle Foundation, a Mississauga-based charity that raises funds for hospice palliative care throughout Ontario, is a supporter of Heart House. The hospice has regularly entered a team in the annual cycling event, which this year takes place on June 22, has benefited from the Healing Cycle’s pledge to channel at least 85 per cent of the funds raised by hospice teams back to their specific organization. According to the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, 70 per cent of Canada’s population does not have access to a palliative care hospice. With seniors now one of the fastest growing segments of the population, there is an urgent need for more facilities to ensure that those who are making life’s final journey do so in a loving and caring environment.

Michaels Hair Body Mind along with Credit Valley Conservation Authority, Rattray Marsh Protection Association and Forest Ontario will be planning a tree planting event in the early fall that will replace many of the trees that will be removed due to the ash borer beetle. Because so many of the ash trees will be removed, this will greatly impact the density of the forest in and around the Marsh. The trees donated by Michaels Hair Body Mind will really help to regreen the marsh and make up for some of the loss of tree cover. If anybody is interested in joining the team from Michaels and CVC and politicians along with your community group, all area residents are welcome to come out and turn this tree planting event a day to remember.

The Healing Cycle is committed to expanding hospice palliative care throughout Ontario. If you would like to help us, please sign up for this year’s fundraising ride, which takes place on June 22. Go to thehealingcycle.ca to sign up.

If you would like to participate please visit www.michaelshbm.com and give them your contact information. Details of the event will be made available as they transpire.

The Gratifying Harvest Journal www.clarksonbia.com

Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hardearned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. Costs do matter!

because the fund company remunerated a sales person when the fund was sold to you (some companies will try to characterize it otherwise). This means you likely do have an advisor involved with your account. Before doing anything else stop and evaluate whether you need or desire an ongoing advisor. An advisor costs money, (between upfront commissions and annual trailer fees the advisor is earning 1% a year on average) and if you need one, you will pay in some form. If you are about to transfer your funds to another advisor that is also compensated by the fund company, either through DSC funds, Front Load funds or no load funds (ironic name) with a large trailer, think again. You will trigger the redemption fee AND still have a high MER (management expense ratio). You have made your situation worse, not better. So maybe we need to also think about the advisor, not just the fund company. For new or small investors, mutual funds do provide a wonderful way to enter the markets beyond GICs. However, a high percentage of mutual funds are sold by commissioned advisors, many for whom the key word is commission, NOT advisors. This unfortunately often includes the banks, who are also product driven distributors. Additionally, the problem is not always only the advisor, but the timid investor, who is afraid to ask to get what they are paying for. Demand a good, complete financial plan of your advisor or financial planner. Expect it and ask for it. That is what you are paying the high MERs for. If your advisor is unable to provide it, then you have a clear answer and it is time to move on. As always, do be vigilant in understanding the advisor`s motivation for any recommendations they make at this time.

Seeking Redemption Again (Fees). I have been getting multiple inquiries about redemption fees so I thought this month I would take the time to look at this issue again. The possibility of redemption fees arise when you purchase a mutual fund with a deferred sales charge (DSC). Like no load funds, the mutual fund company does invest 100% of your deposit with them BUT if the fund is sold within a specified amount of time it will trigger redemption fees. This is due to the fund company not having sufficient time to recover the investment it made in obtaining the sale. Remember, these mutual funds have annual charges deducted (included in the management expenses or MER) each year and the fund company is counting on making money on you annually for enough years to satisfy their business plan. The redemption fees are usually a sliding scale, from about 6% to 0%, over a seven or eight year period. If you are unhappy with the fund you are in, you may usually transfer it to another fund within the same class of funds at the same company without triggering the fee. It is usually required to move to a similar class of funds because the management fees are set differently on DSC funds than other classes. The mutual fund company is happy to be able to continue to charge you as planned, albeit in a different fund. With many mutual fund companies having large offerings of funds, this is very commonly the route used to get out of a fund you are unhappy with. Interestingly, the most common sliding scale is a seven year period and the average holding period for a mutual fund in the Canadian marketplace has always hovered around seven years. Huh! I guess Canadians as a group do not like to pay redemption fees.

If you can find an advisor that specializes in lower cost funds or you are going to manage your own account, you can now evaluate the decision to dump your existing fund company on a return on investment basis. If your current funds have an MER of 2.5% and you can reduce the MER to 1.5% with another comparable fund with an advisor attached, then you have a basis for saving 1% per year. It may take you five or six years to reap the savings, so not much pay back for making the change. You will need other reasons like lack of confidence or poor service or inability to provide a good financial plan, etc. to trigger a change. However, if the current cost is over 4%, like I saw just last week, very different story with lots of opportunity to save. Before we leave that thought, just like in all your other shopping experiences, there are comparable products at very different price points, you just need to know where to shop. Few funds in Canada are completely unique regardless of the marketing materials that say otherwise, so lowering your costs is always an option.

If you decide that you would like to change fund companies before the expiry of the set time, you will confront these redemption fees. Now the fee is there

Advice For A Fee

tirement liabilityere

Now if you have decided to abandon the use of a company paid advisor altogether, for doing it yourself or using a fee only advisor, you can get a much different result. If much of your holdings are in very large funds that tend to track the index, move to an index fund or ETF. MER costs will fall below 0.5% and now with a 2% yearly savings you will have your money back in just a few years. If you seek out a fee only planner, set your expectations correctly. It is difficult to provide any worthwhile detailed plan for under $800, which is a high percentage cost when you only have a few dollars to invest. With additional fees each year for review, you may save some, but if you need or desire an advisor, it will be an ongoing cost. The average fee only planner is charging $200 to $250 per hour, but many do have discounts and lower rates to help out small or new investors, we do. Best of all, find a Portfolio Manager that also offers financial planning.
