Blaze damages Veteran Hotel Bryan Passifiume

ECA Review Reporter The future of a popular night spot is in doubt after a fire tore through the 84 year old Veteran Hotel on Saturday, December 15. Bar staff were alerted to the fire at 12:15 a.m. when the building’s fire alarm activated. When bar manager Vicki Spencer went upstairs to investigate she was met with a hallway full of smoke. Spencer and another staff member attempted to extinguish the fire in room 6, but by the time they returned with buckets and a fire extinguisher the fire was out of control.

According to Veteran Fire Chief Darryl Tkach, fire crews arrived to find large amounts of smoke exiting second story windows of the hotel. Firefighters from Coronation and Consort were dispatched to assist in firefighting efforts. Fire crews were on scene until 6:30 a.m. when daylight revealed the extent of the damage. “The entire upstairs is done,” Spencer told The Review. “There’s holes in the floor, the roof is gone -it’s pretty bad.” The bar’s kitchen sustained heavy damage, as did the men’s room and areas of the ceiling below the fire. Spencer said that

the damage to the two-storey section of the building was so severe that it may need to be demolished. “We’re not entirely sure,” she said. “We’re still waiting to see what the insurance adjuster has to say.” Spencer added that she would like to see the hotel rebuilt. She credits the Veteran Fire Department for their prompt response and their efforts to save the hotel. There were eight patrons in the bar at the time of the fire, all escaped without injury. As of press time the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Veteran fire is the second hotel blaze to occur in as many weeks. The Commercial Hotel in Alliance was destroyed by a fire on Sunday, December 9. The cause of that fire is still under investigation.

The fire that tore through the upstairs of the Veteran Hotel in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 15 started in room six (far left). Fire crews from Veteran, Consort and Coronation responded promptly to fight the blaze.

Flooded streets turn into sheets of ice in Coronation Bryan Passifiume

ECA Review Reporter A water main break in the intersection of King Street and Victoria Avenue in Coronation left many residents and businesses without running water for much of Friday, December 14. According to Public Works Foreman Allen Smith, town crews were first alerted

to the break at 1:30 am on Friday, December 14. Town crews were quick to isolate the break and close off the affected lines. Smith told The Review that the problem was caused by rusty bolts on an old pipe joint. Modern water installations use corrosion-resistant stainless steel valves and bolts, but according to Smith, older installations using iron bolts are still in the system.

Cold overnight temperatures turned the flooded streets into sheets of ice, hampering repair efforts. King Street downhill to Railway Avenue was very icy, despite efforts by the public works crew to break up the ice and apply sand for traction. Water outflow from the break was confined to the streets and no businesses reported flooding. The intersection of King Street and

The loss of water service was isolated to those who were connected to the King street water line. The line was repaired and service was fully restored by 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Emergency simulation a success Bryan Passifiume

ECA Review Reporter A wildfire originating at the landfill north Coronation laid waste to much of Paintearth County causing widespread evacuations and mobilization of emergency services. It was the frightening backdrop of this fictional catastrophe that the County of Paintearth chose to stage their first tabletop emergency exercise at the county offices in Castor on Wednesday, November 28. Participants included emergency personnel, landowners, staff and councillors from Paintearth County, Coronation, Castor and Halkirk. The purpose of the exercise was to test both the emergency response and communications skills of emergency responders, and to help put the county’s emergency plan into practice in a

safe and controlled environment. The incident, which consisted of a devastating landfill fire that destroyed the Town of Coronation, was based on a real landfill fire that occurred in 2007. Many of the participants in this exercise were part of the 2007 response. In all, both participants and organizers were pleased with the exercise. “It went awesome!” exclaimed County CAO Tarolyn Peach. “We put into practice our roles and responsibilities in the event of an emergency.” When disaster strikes, the county’s council chambers are transformed into a fully equipped emergency operations centre, where emergency response, evacuations and support services are mustered and directed. The exercise was valuable in pointing out important deficiencies in the emergency plan that could only be evident in

Kitscoty RCMP respond to fatal crash Kitscoty RCMP responded to a call of a two vehicle collision on Hwy 897 near Twp 512, north of Kitscoty on Wednesday, December 12 at approximately 6:30 a.m. On arrival, police discovered that a northbound pick up had struck a deer crossing the highway. This collision caused the northbound driver to enter the southbound lanes where it struck a southbound car head on. The driver, and sole occupant, of the southbound vehicle was killed instantly. The deceased was a 46 year old male temporarily residing in the Marwayne area. The deceased was originally from the Maritimes and was in Alberta for employment purposes. The name of the deceased is not being released at the

request of the next of kin who have been notified of this tragedy. The occupants of the pick up truck were transported to nearby hospitals for precautionary measures and suffered no serious injuries. There are no charges being considered at this time. Police would like to remind the travelling public to be cautious when driving in the rural areas due to the high number of wildlife that are present during the season. Wooded areas near highways can be especially dangerous as animals can appear with little warning so drivers should be vigilant when travelling through these areas.

such an elaborate dress rehearsal. According to Peach, one such problem was communications between the reception area and the council chambers. “We’ve never held a practice in this administration building before,” Peach said. “Between the reception and the EOC (Emergency Operations Centre), we needed to work on communication.” Barry Brigley, deputy disaster emergency manager for the Town of Coronation, agreed with Peach. “It went really good,” Brigley said, remarking that the exercise was vital in establishing a sound emergency plan for the county. “It taught us the importance of staying calm. You have to work with everybody because everything is interconnected.”

A rash of break-ins in Coronation have police warning businesses to make their premises less attractive to burglars. In the early morning hours of Thursday, December 6, three separate businesses were broken into and burglarized. According to Coronation RCMP, the Coronation Curling Rink, the Bowling Alley and Expressions of Honor were all forcibly entered by prying open the side door. “We’re not sure at this point if they were locals or traveling burglars,” said Sgt. Colm Fitzgerald, commander of the Coronation RCMP detachment, who added that the break-ins do not follow the same

pattern as the break-ins that occurred at the same time last year. The burglars, according to the RCMP, seemed to be after money. The suspects left fingerprints behind at the scene which are being analyzed and documented. RCMP once again wish to remind businesses that they are an important step in crime prevention. “With the Christmas season, there’s going to be a lot more people around town.” Sgt. Fitzgerald said. “Businesses have to be more vigilant with your cash.” Leaving cash in the till or otherwise unsecured is giving a potential burglar easy access. “It’s all about taking away the easy access,” Sgt. Fitzgerald added. The investigation is continuing.

Until it’s too late Brenda Schimke

ECA Review Journalist Sorry, Mr. President, it’s not an unconscionable evil, it is a preventable tragedy. Let me remind you, Mr. President, that your “great country has had 61 gun-related massacres since 1982, 31 of them in schools. Mr. President your sincerity is genuine and touching. We can all see how much you are personally affected when little children and mothers/teachers are killed. Yet, Mr. President you must accept a good part of the responsibility--you and your fellow legislators. You promised hope and a better America when elected four

years ago. Instead your administration has actually loosened up the rules around gun ownership. Let’s talk about the first victim, the one that is seldom mentioned-the mother of the shooter. She owned all the equipment her son used . . . automatic and semi-automatic pistols, guns, and rifles. She had a stockpile of ammunition that could have killed 1,000 more children. And they were all legally bought for “home use. Mr. President, automatic and semi-automatic shooting pieces are weapons of mass destruction, they are designed as “people-killers. They aren’t hunting guns. They aren’t guns that a rancher would use to put down a sick cow. There are many opportunities to kill, and be killed, by equals. If you have this need to blow things away with high-powered, automatic killing equipment, join the army, a mercenary group, a contractor for the U.S. military, or a drug gang. We always hear the refrain, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people. I’m here to tell you, Mr. President, guns do kill people. If that young lad had walked into the school with a cache of ammunition and threw the ammunition with all his might at them, those 26 people would be alive today. You need three components to execute a mass killing--high-powered automatic guns, an angry or mentally unstable person, and access to a cache of ammunition. You know Mr. President we all have the capability to do heinous acts. None of us have absolute control over our circumstances or our mental health. Your country has spent billions of dollars

incarcerating and hanging the mentally ill or ignoring them as they live on the streets under cardboard boxes. But now, Mr. President, you have a new breed of mentally disturbed citizens. They are young men usually from middle-class or well-to-do families. They are often bullied but always spend an inordinate amount of time watching or participating in violence through videos and the internet. They have parents who believe in the gun, who themselves use it properly, but have no idea what is happening in their children’s heads. Until it’s too late. These vulnerable young people just have to pick the day, pick the victims and pick out which weapons to use in the comfort of their own homes. They don’t do prison and they don’t do homelessness. They create carnage and despair and then exit the world on their own terms. Mr. President, the whole world gets it, why don’t you? It’s indisputable, more guns equals more gun-related violence. More guns in the hands of citizens mean more innocent children killed. Don’t get me wrong, Mr. President, all of our countries experience some heart-wrenching gun-related massacres and crimes. But Mr. President, the United States is consistently the most violent country in the free world and kills more kids than any other country in the G26. As Canadians we are shocked, saddened and feel very sorry for the families of the victims of those killed in Connecticut last Friday. But the majority of Canadians and the free world don’t understand your culture of guns. We just don’t get it!

A New Year filled with change Rick Strankman MLA Drumheller-Stettler Since the 1930s, Alberta has been recognized as the most conservative province in Canada. Alberta’s government has been formed by a series of right-wing parties since then without interruption, beginning in 1935 with Social Credit and continuing since 1971 with the Progressive Conservatives. This year a lot has transpired in Alberta with the political landscape and it’s made my reflections different than in past years. My reflections have been based around change and the history we have seen made this year in Alberta. In 1921, the United Farmers of Alberta were the governing party in Alberta. It began as a

This approach was in stark contrast to the parochialism and strict rural values of the Social Credit who was slow to adapt to the changes in Alberta, as its two largest cities seeing them lose support dramatically. In the 1971 election, the PCs campaigned on the simple theme “NOW! that emphasized their goal of increasing Alberta’s clout in Canada. On August 30, 1971, the Tories won power for the first time in Alberta’s history. However, they swept Edmonton and took all but five seats in Calgary. This gave Lougheed a strong majority government, with 49 of the 75 seats in the legislature. Turn to Views, Pg 6

Flagstaff County extends assessment contract Bryan Passifiume

ECA Review Reporter Flagstaff County Council has approved a motion to extend the county’s assessment contract for another two years. The county has used Accurate Assessment Group for its municipal assessment and management of its geographic information systems since August of 2011. “The staff has been extremely pleased with their services,” Shelly Armstrong, CAO of Flagstaff County told county council. Armstrong called the two year extension ‘fair.’ Prior to contracting out their assessment services, the duties were performed

by an in-house member of staff. The need to contract the services out, according to Armstrong, was a lack of qualified people available to fill the role. “There just aren’t any assessors out there to hire,” she said.

100th anniversary The County of Flagstaff’s centennial is approaching and council got their first chance to discuss their vision for the event. Deputy Reeve Charlotte Curtis envisioned a county tour featuring tourism spots, economic development highlights and popular recreation spots. “We should highlight and show the public what we have,” she said. “The public should be proud of

what we have. We need to raise the profile of what the county is and what we do.” County councillor Henry Hays felt that a large celebration is the key to its success. “If we do it, it has to be be big enough so people will want to come,” he told council. “It should be big or forget it.” Councillor Wade Lindseth agreed and suggested that any planning involve the Ag Services Board. Reeve Gerald Kuefler suggested that council form a committee to develop a plan, and bring it back to council for their approval. Deputy Reeve Curtis agreed to head the committee.

Seasons’ Greetings from your neighbourhood businesses

Views and vision of ordinary Albertans Cont’d from Pg 4 After 16 years of UFA rule government became stale and ineffective. The Social Credit party fell to a similar fortune after 26 years in power because they didn’t respond to the changing will of the people. In a similar fashion, the current version of the PCs has lost their way and no longer represents the views and vision of ordinary Albertans. The Christmas season is a time for reflection of the year gone by and what a year it’s been in Alberta. Change is happening as it has done in Alberta for generations, history repeating itself.

I would like to wish all of the people in the riding of Drumheller Stettler a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with positive

change towards a new form of conservatism in Alberta that preserves the values of Albertans.

Thank you for your business in 2012! Looking forward to serving you in 2013!

Greetings of the Season ...And many thanks for your generous support all year long.

bright. Schuetzle and Zinger are in the process of writing new music and plan to spend the new year in the studio laying down new tracks. They are also booked to play a battle of the bands show in Consort in early February. To the members of

Redeemed, playing their music and worshipping the Lord go hand in hand. “In the Word, it says that worshipping God through music is a very good way to worship Him,” Zinger said. “Music is a very good way to do it.”

The 95th Psalm speaks of making joyful noises to the Lord and singing to the ‘rock of our salvation’. Taking this piece of Scripture literally is Redeemed, a group of musical youngsters who have made “rocking their salvation” their life’s mission. Redeemed played their latest concert at the Evangelical Free Church in Coronation on Friday, December 14, filling the pews with their fans and blowing the roof off with their edgy and worshipful rock music. The band’s current lineup consists of Coronation’s Dylan Rondeau on rhythm guitar, sisters Reanne and Carissa Schuetzle from Altario on lead guitar and vocals respectively, drummer Jared Zinger from Bentley and fill-in bassist Elliott Mabbot from Halkirk. They may only have been on the Alberta Christian rock scene for a year and a half but their tight musicianship and loyal following have them turning heads and winning fans from across central Alberta. Perhaps their biggest break so far came in September when they were asked to open for Kiros, a Canadian Christian rock band that tours internationally. “It was a lot of fun,” said Reanne Schuetzle. “It was one of the first concerts where we started to get our name out there.” Playing music is pure passion for the 15-year-old, who founded the group with drummer Jared and her older sister Carissa in mid 2011. Schuetzle’s enthusiasm for her craft was evident during Lead quitarist Reanne Schuetzle (above) performed along with band Friday’s performance, mounting the floor members. Making the crowd a part of the show is one of the band’s signatures. “Our fans are very important,” said Schuetzle. “They get us going and we get them going. We want to inspire them to love Jesus and get to know them -- that’s the most important thing.” The Coronation show was a benefit to help the band that gave them their start. Earlier this month, Kiros’ tour bus broke down requiring costly repairs. Money raised at the show will go towards helping their idols get back on the road and finish touring. “They got us started,” Schuetzle said. “We wanted to give back to them.” The show itself was an hour-long performance feaTo all of our patrons, staff and their families, turing live music, a we would like to send out our best wishes for a video devotional by very merry holiday season. an ex-member of 403-742-4505 403-741-8864 the rock group Stettler, AB Donalda, AB Korn who found (Cell) 403-740-6088 • (Fax) 403-883-2603 new life in Christ and a touching testimony by the group’s guitarist Dylan Rondeau. Foliar fungicides: A growing market Agri-News Pesticide use is a common practice in today’s farming operations. Producers commonly apply herbicides for weed control and insecticides during pest outbreaks. One area of pesticide use that appears to be increasing is the use of foliar fungicides. These products are used for controlling foliar diseases such as leaf diseases in cereal crops, sclerotinia in canola and aschochyta blight in pulse crops. The interest in foliar fungicides may be related to agronomic factors (eg. tighter crop rotations, wet conditions during the growing season); economic factors (eg. higher commodity prices) and increased marketing of foliar fungicides by pesticide companies. The marketing activities by these companies have been promoting fungicide use in the major crops grown in western Canada. “If a producer is interested in using foliar fungicides there are several considerations that should be taken into account, says Mark Cutts, crop specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “It’s important to perform field checks prior to using a fungicide. Field scouting will allow the producer to check for the presence of the disease (eg. leaf diseases in cereal crops) or check for conditions that favour the development of disease (eg. sclerotinia in canola). “The general requirements for disease to occur include the presence of a pathogen, a susceptible host and a favourable environment, says Cutts. “Field scouting will allow a producer to evaluate these parameters and determine disease risk. For example, the presence of disease (pathogen) on the lower leaves of a barley crop (host), combined with favourable environmental conditions (such as warm, wet weather) would indicate the potential for further disease development. In this situation, if these conditions continue, a foliar fungicide would likely be justified. Another consideration for the use foliar fungicides is ensuring that they are applied at the proper time. A properly applied foliar fungicide will provide the best level of disease control. Fungicides applied too early or too late will not provide the desired level of dis-

K&C

ease control. In the case of leaf disease in cereals, research has shown that the best time to apply foliar fungicides is at flag leaf emergence. Applications at this time allow the upper leaves to be protected from disease and will benefit yield. For some diseases a fungicide is applied prior to disease development. It is therefore necessary to determine disease risk and then ensure the fungicide is applied at the proper stage. For sclerotinia in canola, fungicide applications are made at early flower (20 to 50 per cent bloom), prior to the establishment of the disease. Fungicide effectiveness will also be influenced by the water volume used to apply a foliar fungicide. Water volumes should be high enough to ensure thorough coverage of the plant. Without good coverage the target plants will not be protected from disease development. For ground sprayer applications of foliar fungicides, most water volumes are registered at a minimum of 40 litres per acre. “It is important to be aware that the increased use of foliar fungicides can lead to fungicide resistance, says Cutts. “Development of resistance to a fungicide is similar to the development of herbicide resistant weeds. Fungicide resistance will

reduce disease control and can ultimately limit the use of a particular fungicide. “In order to reduce the risk of fungicide resistance it is important to ensure that the same fungicide is not used repeatedly. Rotating fungicide mode of action will reduce the risk of fungicide resistance developing. “Products with different names may still have the same mode of action, therefore selecting foliar fungicides by their active ingredient is recommended. Producers interSouth of Big Valley, AB ested in foliar along Hwy. 56 fungicide products 1 section, 631 acres can refer to the grassland. Edmonton Symphony responds to loss of hotel Diane Dammann

ECA Review Submitted There was a lot of news coverage of the loss of the Commercial Hotel. Folks out at Duncan, BC saw it on the TV. Both Global and CTV carried coverage of the fire. CBC Radio interviewed Councillor Del Wickstrom and his daughter in Carstairs heard it on the news. It surprised Del that his daughter was listening to CBC. The Edmonton Symphony people heard about our loss and have offered a free ticket to Sunday, December 23 performance of McDades Celtic Christmas. See Muriel Fankhanel for tickets. You have to find your own way to the Winspear Center. This is a very nice gesture towards our community. Red and Shirley McDermott may live in Camrose but they still feel like Alliancites when trouble strikes. They wrote a lovely letter expressing their sentiments upon the loss of the hotel. The letter is in the post office on the notice board. On Tuesday, the Library Board held the 5th annual cookie exchange. As usual there was a nice selection of cookies to be exchanged and a very nice selection of goodies to be eaten with the tea served. The 4th annual Community Concert will be held in the United Church on Wednesday evening at 7 pm. This will be the last market before Christmas. Alliance markets run year round so the January Market will be back on the third Wednesday of the month with

vendors, lunch and blood pressure checks. The Alliance/Castor Choir will perform in the United Church in Alliance on Sunday, December 23. There is a children’s choir with them this year. Diane Sacha of Daysland visited her daughter, Ashley in her new home, the former Guhl place last week. Birthday wishes to our neighbour, Shawn Bazuta, besides being a good neighbour, Shawn is also one of the conductors for the Battle River Railway. Marie Rands continues to downsize with the help of her friend, Pam Muise by having a garage sale most weekends. They sold a lot of stuff during Santa Daze. Darlene Sinclair brought a plate of cookies to the coffee gang in gratitude for the care and concern and prayers that were sent for her daughter Jolene after her accident and surgeries. Jolene has progressed to the therapy portion of her recovery. She was waiting to go to the Glenrose and is probably there now. Several folks from Alliance attended the open house at the manse in Forestburg on Friday evening. Jope and Karen had a very big selection of foods that were delicious. The Christmas Eve service in Alliance will be at 9 pm in the United Church. Hazel’s Village will disappear after Christmas. The restaurant will be closed from December23 to January 2. The village is a beautiful collection of lighted buildings that one could spend a long time enjoying.

Fun games for a successful party Is your annual Christmas party about as exciting as a funeral? Here are a few suggestions for games that are sure to put the fun back into the festive season. THE YES/NO GAME Preparation: give five clothes pins to each guest, which they will attach to their clothing. Goal: throughout the evening, avoid saying either “yes” or “no” in your conversations, at the risk of losing a peg to the person who tricked you into saying either one. Winner: the last person to have one peg remaining.

Old fashioned parlour games are suitable for all occasions and all age groups, but they are still big hits especially at Christmas.

Winter Wonderland As the snow falls to the ground, May it bring peace all around, to the folks we’ve served this year.

PASS THE PARCEL Preparation: wrap up a gift with several layers of paper. Goal: sitting in a circle, each participant has a turn rolling the die until someone gets a “6”. The lucky one must then quickly put on a pair of oven mitts (a hat and scarf are optional) and try to unwrap the gift until someone else rolls a “6” and so on.

All signs point to a wonderful season, And your loyal friendship is the reason — So whether you’re close or far from here, We’re sending our best wishes for a joyous year!

- From Kevin Hampton & Family, and Staff

Winner: the one who succeeds in unwrapping the gift. Tip: when wrapping, be sure to use lots of boxes and plastic bags and excessive amounts of tape! MYSTERY JAR Preparation: fill a glass jar (or any other transparent container) with candies. Goal: without them being able to touch it, ask guests to write down their guess at the number of candies in the jar. Winner: the one who guesses the closest number to the answer. This person also wins the great pleasure of sampling the goodies! Tip: choose candies of varying sizes, shapes, and colours. Don’t forget to count them before closing the jar! Old favourites such as charades are still suitable for all occasions and all age groups. And don’t forget another “new” classic: karaoke! Lots of fun guaranteed!

Emergency supplies for surprise visits You have an unexpected encounter with old university friends who’d love to see your new home. Your in-laws call to let you know they’ll be flying in today instead of Monday. Your partner has invited all the members of his hockey team over and he forgot to let you know. You’d better be prepared for these not-so-improbable scenarios! Christmas is a time of year when surprise visits may happen at any moment, and that’s why it’s so important to always be stocked up on emergency supplies, just in case. Here are some ideas for your stock of supplies: • A few bottles of wine (red, white and rosé); • Two different types of beer, with a few bottles of each keeping nice and cool in the fridge; • Fresh fruits and vegetables for making a fast fruit salad or veg-

gies and dip; Juices for the children; Folding chairs; An ashtray for smokers; Crackers and cheeses; Everything required to prepare the most popular cocktails (vodka, rum, tequila, gin, curacao, Baileys, fruit juice, citrus fruits, Maraschino cherries, a shaker, glasses, ice cubes, etc.); Mineral water or pop for those who don’t drink alcohol; A selection of coffees (with and without caffeine), teas and herbal teas, not forgetting milk, cream, and sugar; Frozen dishes, especially hors d’oeuvres and other appetizers; Paper napkins in sufficient quantities; A handy source of music

(CD or MP3 player, etc.); • Packs of cards, board and video games; • And, last but not least, your welcoming smile!

The best part of any journey is the people you meet along the way, and we’re pleased to say, we’ve never met a better bunch of folks than you. Thanks for making it all worthwhile. Merry Christmas!

You’d better stock up on emergency supplies just in case, because Christmas is a time of year when surprise visits may happen at any moment!

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

how sweet it is

The ten Christmas commandments 1. Thou shalt not go to more than one party per day Are you as busy as Santa Claus over the holidays? Be careful not to wear yourself out. Learn to say “no” and only accept invitations to parties you really want to go to. 2. Thou shalt refuse third helpings Your taste buds might think they’ve gone to heaven but don’t let holiday buffets be an excuse for overeating. If you need to loosen your belt, stop eating! 3. Thou shalt limit your alcohol consumption Is your glass being refilled before it’s even empty? It’s your responsibility to keep an eye on your alcohol intake. Have a great evening but don’t lose control. 4. Thou shalt be yourself If you hate the thought of wearing a tie or high heels, then don’t. Leave high fashion to others; being comfortable will only increase your enjoyment of the time spent with friends.

5. Thou shalt respect your budget Do you love spoiling your loved ones? Just be careful to respect your holiday budget and use your credit card sparingly. 6. Thou shalt avoid arguments Avoid talking about politics, money, and religion during the festivities. Be ready to compromise when disagreement arises. 7. Thou shalt make some time for yourself Don’t forget to take a break from the holiday frenzy. Make some time for yourself — just for yourself.

Thou shalt be careful on the roads Don’t drive in questionable weather or poor road conditions or if you are overtired or have had one glass too many. The fragrances of Christmas Some smells seem to be permanently engraved in our memories. Scents synonymous with our fondest childhood memories can take us back through the years in the blink of an eye. A room filled with the scent of cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg will instantly bring to mind Grandma’s gingerbread cookies or Dad’s hot chocolate sprinkled with cinnamon. That’s probably why we rush to stock up with holiday spices and foods that will fill our homes with exotic fragrances. Just think of the oranges we used to find in the bottom of our Christmas stockings, a throwback to earlier days when citrus fruits were precious, rare treats. Indeed, sticking a few cloves into an orange will fill a room with a rich perfume, both sweet and spicy and most definitely Christmassy. To really get into the holiday spirit you can always rely on the wonders of Mother Nature. Start with the fir tree, the

king of the forest. To ornament your living room with one of these fragrant beauties, choose a balsam fir — its delicious scent makes it the ideal Christmas tree. Other plants and flowers are also great Christmas traditions: • The poinsettia, also known as the Christmas star, is easily recognized by its impressive, bright red bracts; • Holly, with its prickly leaves and red berries, which make it the Christmas symbol par excellence; • The Jerusalem cherry or winter cherry produces a multitude of small, colourful berries in November that look appetizing but are toxic; • The Christmas cactus, which bears magnificent flowers on the tips of its branches; • The Christmas kalanchoe, whose flowers come in a range of colours and whose leaves are sometimes tinged with red; • The amaryllis, with its enormous flowers, making it an ideal gift; • Mistletoe, hung from the ceiling and under which tradition demands that two people must kiss.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

Surviving Christmas with a baby is possible! Routine is an important factor in a child’s development, especially during a time of year that is as busy and unpredictable as the holidays. It is never easy for babies and young children when their lives are turned upside down. Tired and cranky, your little Christmas elf is very likely to display some sudden mood swings, just as you might be too! The solution to this is to try and recreate the daily habits of your little bundle of

joy as much as possible without sacrificing your own pleasure. First of all let’s look at sleep. Because you will likely be going out to a few parties, be sure to carefully plan your baby’s naps so that they can recharge their batteries. You have to travel an hour or more to reach your destination? Great! Your child can sleep in the car and be in great shape for all the hugs and kisses awaiting him. If your travelling time isn’t long enough, be sure to ask your hostess for a quiet place where your baby can sleep after your arrival. Let your family know if you’ll be arriving late or leaving early. This way they won’t be disappointed when you suddenly leave while the party is in full swing. Another good way to maintain baby’s routine is to invite friends and family members to your home. No need to cart around all those items so necessary for a baby: diapers, bottles, milk, pyjamas, clean clothes, blankets, play yard, and stroller. You’ll have everything your baby needs close by and your guests will be only too happy to give you a helping hand during baby’s nighttime routine.

Beware of food poisoning! Every year, thousands of people fall victim to food poisoning after eating food that was not prepared, cooked, or stored according to health guidelines. This is particularly true during the holidays, when there are usually more parties, meals and generous portions! Fortunately, all you have to do is to follow a few basic rules in order to enjoy the festivities without risk of falling ill. Salmonella, E. coli and listeria are definitely not meant to be on your guest list. To avoid the spread of bacteria, be sure to wash your hands frequently (in hot, soapy water for at least 20 seconds) and wash with soap and hot water all

ALLERGIES If you suffer from a food allergy you should immediately tell your host or hostess which items you can’t eat. Ask if a special plate without those items could be prepared for you, so you can enjoy the meal in complete safety. Then again, since erring on the side of safety is always best, preparing your own plate is perhaps the safest way to go.

With joy and glad tidings to those we hold “deer” Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! We truly appreciate your loyal support.

With gratitude to all of you for your loyalty and support. For the gift of your friendship, we are deeply grateful and wish you all the very merriest of holiday seasons and a prosperous New Year.

kitchen worktops, utensils, and anything else used during meal preparation. Beware of cross-contamination: always wash fresh fruit and vegetables and keep raw foods separate from cooked food or food that is ready to be eaten. Use different chopping boards and ensure that foods reach their correct internal cooking temperatures. At this time of year we inevitably prepare too much food, so be sure to keep any leftovers in the fridge, ideally at a temperature lower than 4° Celsius. Throw away any food that has been left at room temperature for more than two hours. Plan to eat up any leftovers as soon as possible, ideally in the next two or three days. An even better way to deal with leftovers is to quickly freeze suitable items and divide the rest into small portions to offer to your guests.

Be sure to wash your hands frequently, as well as all kitchen worktops and utensils, in order to avoid the spread of bacteria.

We Know You’ve Been Good

Wishing each and every one of you the very best Christmas, ever!

Why is it so difficult to keep New Year’s resolutions? Get more exercise, maintain a healthier diet, improve the way you manage your finances, stop smoking, use the car less... Is gallantry a thing of the past? No way! Christmas is the perfect occasion to show a little gallantry, when everyone is dressed up in their very best for all the glittering parties and romantic dates. But gallantry? “What’s that?” you may ask. Far from being the special domain of royalty and dignitaries, gallantry is making a big comeback, right here at home. Essentially, it can be defined as the courtesy men show women through chivalrous attention. So, now is the time for all you men out there to take notes on how to be the perfect gentleman; the love of your life will glow with happiness! • Hold the door open for her to go through before you. • Walk on the street side of the sidewalk to “protect” her from any potential dangers. • Help her to take off and put on her coat. • Accompany her to her door after an outing. • Open the car door for her. • Carry the heaviest cases when travelling. • When going down a flight of stairs, go in front of her so you can catch her in the event of a stumble. When climbing stairs, go ahead of her so as not to embarrass her by following too closely.

• Pull her chair back slightly in restaurants as an invitation for her to sit down. Ideally you should also wait for her to be seated before you sit down. • Don’t hesitate to pay her compliments, especially about what she is wearing or how elegant she looks. Of course, your comments should always be respectful and never out of place. If some of these practices make her feel confined to an inferior role, respect her experience and offer a chivalrous gesture that leaves room for her to say “no”. Nevertheless, assure her that these good manners aim above all to help you win her over. How nice it is to receive such romantic attentions, especially over the holidays!

Far from being the special domain of the royalty and dignitaries of this world, there is room for gallantry in everyday life too.

Each year during the Holiday Season, we take great pleasure in setting aside our regular work and sending a heartfelt message to all our friends and customers. How joyful we are that this time has come again to extend to you our sincere gratitude because it is good friends and customers like you that make our business possible. May your holiday be filled with joy and the coming year be overflowing with all the good things in life.

May your season be blessed with joy and success.

Merry Christmas!
