First day of school

ECA Review/D. Clark

Jessica Buxton and Emily Weeks on their first day of Kindergarten.

Dena Clark

Review Reporter Five year old Emily Weeks had a shy smile on her face as she walked through the door of her new classroom at Coronation School on the morning of Sept. 2 for her kindergarten orientation. The atmosphere at the school that morning around 8 a.m. was exactly as one would expect for

the first day of classes; clean empty halls, posters directing traffic and every desk and chair neatly in place awaiting the young minds that would soon be filling the rooms. The calm before the storm. Before 8:30 a.m. the first school buses had arrived and those same halls were exploding with activity, young voices, new backpacks and all the excitement that comes with the first day of school. The Town of Bashaw approved a contract for bylaw services with Camrose County for $95 an hour and the town getting all fines issued within the municipality. “Complaints will be collected at the town office and will be given to the county’s Community Peace Officer (CPO),” Theresa Fuller, Bashaw’s chief administrative officer told council at its regular meeting Sept. 3. The CPO will follow up on the complaints on their weekly patrols and if there are not complaints, will conduct traffic enforcement. CAO Fuller said the costs for the contract, which took effect Sept. 1, are similar to their previous contract with Alberta Animal Services and should fit in with the rest of the budget.

Winter water shut off costs

If residents turn off the

water to their homes during winter they run the risk of not being able to turn the water back on because the old mechanisms could malfunction. Theresa Fuller, chief administrative officer for the Town of Bashaw, presented council with two options to deal with the issue. They could either disallow winter shut offs thus preventing any malfunctions or they could install a new stainless steel mechanism at the location if there is a problem, which would ensure the ability to turn it on and off. But CAO Fuller told council it can be costly to replace the mechanism with a stainless steel one; about $800 each plus winter excavation can cost about $10,000. Coun. Bryan Gust said council should allow residents to turn their water off but let them know that if there is a problem how much it could potentially cost Turn to More, Pg 3 them.

Animal abuse investigation On Sept. 3 the Oyen RCMP Detachment arrested a mother and daughter for failing to comply with release conditions on animal cruelty charges from British Columbia. The mother and daughter were located at a rural residence south of Cereal, Ab. During the investigation Oyen RCMP members discovered several animals that were being neglected and a new investigation into animal cruelty was initiated. Oyen RCMP executed a search warrant at the rural property and located 11 horses, 25 dogs and 17 birds that were in distress. With the assistance of the Alberta SPCA, all animals were seized and relocated. All animals were also seen by a vet and any immediate medical needs were addressed. The mother and daughter have both

Clearly well prepared Cont’d from Pg 1 The friendly teaching staff were clearly well prepared for the busy morning and had positioned themselves at every entrance to greet the 300 students with welcoming smiles. Yet despite the organization and orderliness, that didn’t keep little Emily, who was escorted by her mother, Angela Weeks and younger siblings Lucy (4) and Olivia (2) from looking a little overwhelmed. New Kindergarten teacher, Jessica Buxton, was quick to step in and put a smile on Emily’s face by introducing her to the other three children on hand for that morning’s orientation. Several orientations were done in groups of four children a session, allowing more one-on-one time before their first official day on Friday, Sept. 4 when all 22 Kindergarten students will start their classes together. Jessica Buxton is excited to return to her hometown of Coronation after completing her degree at the University of Alberta. This will be her second year teaching and her first as a Kindergarten teacher.

Council discussed the possibility of erecting stop signs near the community centre. Coun. Lynn Schultz said the trees near the intersection contribute to the lack of visibility. Coun. Bryan Gust said he would like to see signs on Hwy 53 and 21 warning truckers not to use their engine retarder brakes near town. CAO Theresa Fuller said she would discuss the issue with Alberta Transportation.

Staff training approved

Council approved funding increase of $2,500 a year from the previous $1,900 for staff development for administration and public works. CAO Fuller

said the additional funds would support admin staff taking the required courses towards their National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration.

degrade ISIS to stop the humanitarian crisis. In fact, the Syrian refugee crisis is primarily a symptom of a 4-year sectarian civil war. ISIS, although definitely needing to be stopped, is not the root cause of the refugee crisis. ISIS is simply the brutal fallout from centuries of international interference by western nations and the Soviet Union in the affairs of the Middle East. ISIS was given a free pass by Syrian President al-Assad for a number of years to distract the world from his heinous crimes against his own people, which continue to this day. Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel have shown unbelievable humanity, compassion, morality, leadership and humility. They have opened their doors wide and have already processed 185,000 refugees and continue to add tens of thousands weekly to that number. It’s somewhat ironic that the German people, who were responsible for the greatest humanitarian tragedy of the 20th century, the killing of six million Jews, has become the 21st century saviour of the Syrian refugees. I fear the only reasons the Canadian government haven’t stepped up to the plate is a prejudice against Muslims and their obsession with a balanced budget. Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board underspent its budget by nearly $108 million last year, including $25 million for programs that are supposed to help resettle refugees. The Syrian refugee crisis is an emergency and it’s not going away by dropping a few bombs on ISIS. Many countries, including Canada, Britain and the United States, must step up and willingly follow Germany’s example of mass unhindered entry. As the Chief of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, said, “The plight of refugees is everybody’s problem.” Not just the countries in close proximity!

Show your support Dear Editor, Do you think that libraries are an important part of the community? Why is that? Social Media has been abuzz with people speaking up about how their library has helped them in their community. Are you aware of what your local library does for people? On a daily basis, local libraries provide a safe community space for all residents. It is the place where the unemployed come to job search and create resumes. There are programs for children, seniors, ladies and men. Many libraries are also local art galleries and multimedia centres with free computer use and WiFi. Much like local newspapers, they are hubs for information on community events, opportunities and news. With a library card you have access to unlimited amounts of literature, information, movies, media and more. Our local system puts you in touch with online perks like current editions of online magazines, newspapers, movies, shows, documentaries, e-books, audiobooks, language pro-

grams and more. Libraries are dedicated to enriching, empowering and educating their community. Many have said that the value of a library is infinite and impossible to capture. I would like to put a monetary value on the services - $10 per year. That’s it. Here in Coronation a library card costs $10/year for adults and is free for children. The best possible way to support your local library is to go in and become a member. Perhaps you don’t read a lot or don’t have time to use the services, but I’d like to encourage you to become a cardholder as a show of appreciation for what the library offers to the community. The number of cardholders is very important to local libraries - while it does not fully capture the number of users, it does represent the number of supporters in the community. This month is library card sign-up month, come get a card for yourself, your family, or your friends and help show your support for your local library. Lauren Reid, Librarian

Dear Editor, I would like to commend your editorial writer, Ms. Brenda Schimke, on her excellent Op. Ed. piece. “The End Justifies the Means”, Aug. 27, pg. 6. The article should be mandatory reading for all university political science students. It would be a good idea to

send a copy to (a) the Prime Minister’s Office and (b) to our Member of Parliament, Kevin Sorenson. However such a course may be unwise, since your newspaper could suffer both financial and political repercussions. Dr. M.I. Debreau Killam, Ab.

Desmond George James was born in Castor on May 31, 1928 to George and Banfield James from Ireland and he died 87 years later surrounded by his family on Sept. 5, 2015 in Castor. He was the youngest of four: Percy, John and Tom. He grew up on a farm in Bulwark and went to school there until grade 10 at which time he moved with his parents to Victoria. He loved to sing and was also part of a men’s singing club. He was also part of the Elks Club in Castor for most of his adult life and sat as a county councilor for nine years. He loved to dance and he and Janet went to as many dances in the area as they could, right up to a couple of months before his death. Des is predeceased by his brothers and his daughter Pam. SLAP SHOTS

Astros biggest surprise of MLB season by Bruce Penton The whole country of Canada is properly excited about the play of the Toronto Blue Jays this summer, but in Texas, baseball fans are flabbergasted at the quick turnaround of the Houston Astros who are — sorry to say this, Jays’ fans — the most surprising team story of the 2015 season. The ‘Astros’ and ‘losing’ went hand in hand for six straight years and as recently as two years ago won a grand total of 51 games in a 162-game season. New general manager Jeff Luhnow arrived in 2011 and the turnaround began. Aging veterans were traded or released, draft choices were stockpiled, the farm system was built up. Last year, the first dividends started to arrive, as the Astros won 70 games. This year, the punch-line team from Texas has been in first place in the American League West almost since Day one and heading into September, maintained a healthy lead over Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels. It would take a total collapse for the ‘Stros to miss the playoffs altogether and that’s unlikely to happen, so North Americans tuning in to playoff baseball on TV this fall will get to see what all the excitement is about in Houston. For starters, the Astros have a player who fans can’t help but love. Second baseman Jose Altuve is a midget-sized player with speed, power and a batting stroke that’s like butter. He’s only 5-foot-6 and 165 pounds but he won the AL batting crown last year with a .341 average. His 225 hits led the league (a whopping 25 more than runner-up Michael Brantley of Cleveland), as did his 56 stolen bases. Opposing managers feel

that Altuve’s speed will put him into scoring position every time he laces a single, but keeping him off base has been difficult. Big bangers like George Springer, currently on the disabled list but a 20-HR man in only 78 games last year, Luis Valbeuena, Chris Carter and Evan Gattis have been drilling homers, but the play of rookie

shortstop Carlos Correa has been the cherry on top of the Houston resurgence. Altuve calls Correa the best player in baseball and although the Houston star may lead the league in exaggeration with statements like that, he’s not that far off. Correa is batting around .280, had 15 homers through late

August and used his glove like a vacuum at shortstop. A solid pitching staff led by all-star game starter Dallas Keuchel (15-6, 2.28 ERA through Aug. 28) and secondyear man Collin McHugh (14-7) has Houston fans thinking this may finally be the year of the franchise’s first World Series title.

Stettler gymnasts set to train locally Debra Johnston

ECA Review Reporter A total of 113 students have registered so far to begin gymnastics lessons with Stettler Gymnastics Club starting Sept. 29, Coun. Karen Sernecky reported to council at the Sept. 1 regular council meeting. The breakneck pace at which the gymnastics club has come together to offer the service to the community has left the club struggling for finances to acquire basic equipment for the first session. After weighing all the options of supporting the club financially to get equipment in place, council opted to support the club with a $12,000 investment by agreeing to purchase the equipment on behalf of the club. The agreement requires that the club buy back the equipment within two years. Coun. Sernecky, who had stepped aside from her councillor role for the vote, has already located a source for used equipment.

Stettler Museum’s ‘Night of Terror’ Halloween event happening in late October also requires a number of volunteers to staff the haunted house and ghost town. Stettler Town council received an invitation from the Minister of Culture and Tourism, David Eggen, to submit a bid to host the 2017 Alberta 55 Plus Games. The games draw between 1,100 and 1,800 participants to a community as well as other visitors and provides an economic boost to the host community. The drawback is the number of volunteers needed to host the event. Council opted to contact local organizations to see if the will existed to pursue the bid.
