Cohesive plan needs to be in place

Wendy and Jim Dafoe held a fundraiser on May 26 at the Coronation Dam and Campground to raise money for a green space project. The Dafoe’s planned to use the money to purchase trees and plant them along the west side base of the rodeo hill. The Town of Coronation shut down the fundraiser before it began saying the Dafoe’s needed to get council’s approval before they undertook a project to solicit donations.

Clearview to analyze implications to Stettler schools amalgamation Brenda Schimke

ECA Review Journalist A motion passed unanimously at the Clearview Board meeting on May 23, 2013 that directs the Superintendent and Stettler School Administration to analyze the potential benefits and implications of amalgamating in whole or in part all of the Stettler schools. A pilot project would be established for the 2013/14 school year with the following configuration: a pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6 school

and a Grade 7 to 12 school, with an outreach component. Councillor Karen Holloway expressed her concern about implications to the Outreach program. She was assured that during the pilot there would be no change in the outreach location or administration and public consultation would be sought before any final decisions were made. “The idea (of combining schools in Stettler) has been around for some time and support has ramped up,” said Chairman Ken Checkel.

With the Stettler Elementary School principal leaving at the end of this school year and ongoing budget constraints, councillors felt the timing was right to proceed.

Budget A motion to approve the 2013 - 2014 Spring Draft Budget with a projected deficit of approximately $500,000 was passed. After having planned deficits for a number of years, trustees are moving toward a balanced budget as reserves wind down.

Last year’s deficit was approximately $1 million. “The school principals have revised their budgets in accordance with the board’s directions,” said Secretary Treasurer, Lewis Hill when presenting the budget. In a site-based decision-making model, the board sets the parameters, allocates the dollar amounts and the principals make the final budget decisions based on their student populations.

Kulyk said a councillor received calls from people in town asking if the two projects were the same or different. “There was confusion over one verses the other,” said Kulyk. “We wanted to put their plans on hold until we could clearly separate the two projects.” The Dafoe’s said they were never approached or made aware of the plans for a memorial park in the campground. Wendy Dafoe said the first time her and her husband learned of the memorial park was when Bernie Danylyshen began planting trees in a portion of the old baseball diamond. Kulyk said it would have been proper protocol for the Dafoe’s to approach council with a proposal to fundraise money for new trees in the campground. “The Dafoe’s are contracted by council,” said Kulyk. “Therefore, there would be an expectation to seek council’s approval if they were undertaking a project to solicit donations.” Kulyk said council does not want groups arbitrarily doing projects without a cohesive approval process because the fear is there will be contradiction and confusion. Mayor Elliott said she does not oppose the Dafoe’s plan to plant memorial trees at the campground. “This is a wonderful idea for the campground,” said Elliott. “However, a cohesive plan needs to be in place to address some concerns.” Council said it would welcome a proposal from the Dafoe’s regarding their plan to plant memorial trees in the campground.

BEDROOM CARPET OPTION

On Sunday, May 26 Wendy and Jim Dafoe, Coronation Dam and Campground attendants, organized a free “coffee and squares” get-together at Coronation’s campground. The purpose of this event was to say thank you to those who had already donated to their “tree fund”, a project established on Facebook by Wendy Dafoe which garnered close to $1,000 in donations from people in town, and to collect donations from people who still wanted to support the expansion of green space at the Coronation Dam and Campground. The Dafoe’s planned to use the funds raised at the event to purchase trees which they would plant along the base of the rodeo hill on the campground. Also, people who donated money to purchase trees had the option of planting a tree in honour/ memory of a loved one. But, before the Dafoe’s event even started it was shut down. “All I want is this campground to continue to grow and look beautiful,” said Wendy Dafoe. “Last year, we spent $500 of our own money on beautifying the park.” CAO Sandra Kulyk, advised by council members and the mayor, instructed Barry Brigley to go to the campground and shut down the fundraiser. The Dafoe’s were told they had to get council’s approval to raise money for their tree fund. Kulyk said there was confusion in town between the ChooseWell Committee’s memorial garden and the Dafoe’s plan to fundraise money to plant trees along the rodeo hill in honour/memory of a loved one.

STETTLER COUNCIL

Stettler to welcome new doctor Brenda Schimke

ECA Review Journalist Paperwork is being expedited to facilitate Dr. Fairfax-Crone’s move to Stettler. This was welcome news for town councillors at their meeting on May 21, 2013. Dr. Fairfax-Crone is not required to go through a three month practicum as physicians from Scotland are exempt from that requirement. Once settled she can immediately start her practice. Alberta Health Services has approved two more physicians for Stettler and recruitment efforts are ongoing. Tenders for the upgrade to

the Stettler Recreation Centre will be going out shortly. A grant was received from the federal government to assist with the library and parking lot. The County of Stettler committed $140,000 to the library portion of the upgrade. Tanille Timmins has been appointed to the Stettler Library Board Committee. She and her family recently moved back to Stettler after 10 years in Calgary. Approval was given for a new skateboard park on the south side of Recreation Road, adjacent to the ball diamond and near West Park Walkway. A survey of skateboard parks sited near walkways

Lot donated to Stettler Submitted The vacant lot at the south east corner of 50 Street and 50 Avenue in downtown Stettler has been donated to the Town of Stettler by Don and Sylvia Peters and family. The lot is locally referred to as the “Old Stettler Travel Site” and is expected to be developed into a park. Don and Sylvia Peters have suggested the park be dedicated to all the pioneer businesses of Stettler from the Peters family. Notice of the title transfer to the Town of Stettler was confirmed by letter at the May 21

Town of Stettler council meeting. The lot has been vacant since December 2010 when Stettler Travel relocated and the building was demolished. Main Street Stettler is directly supported by successful longtime businesses. In the past few years changes to downtown have included: new and renovated buildings, railway themed architecture, railway track stamped sidewalks and new and expanding businesses. The Stettler Beautification Committee is expected to assist in the planning of the park.

and other outside family activities in Airdrie, Olds and Stony Plain found no concerns. In fact, walkers often stopped to watch kids perform on their skateboards. Lee Penner said a design meeting will be held at the end of May. There has been no word on any grants forthcoming at this time. The Town has asked the County to reconsider its decision not to be a 50 - 50 partner with the relocation of the Seniors’ Centre to the Stettler Recreation Centre. The County and Town have been excellent partners in providing many services and facilities that jointly serve their respect constituents.

Administration had an initial meeting with meter supplier and staff to look at options for replacing water meters in Stettler. The Town has proclaimed June 3 - 9, 2013 as Senior Citizens’ Week. Lunch socials will be held on June 3 (Paragon Place), June 4 (Heart Haven Lodge) and June 5 (Willow Creek Lodge). The week will conclude with a floor curling event on June 6 beginning at 3 p.m. at the Seniors’ Drop-in Centre. Ongoing. Competition for doctors is stiff. In Central Alberta alone, AHS is recruiting 70 physicians.

Most schools will see only minor adjustments Cont’d from Pg 1 “There are issues with every budget but through the hard work of our principals and administration,” said Karen Holloway. “This budget is going to provide excellent student programming than we thought possible when we held our community meetings.” Overall the district will see a reduction by 5.3 full-time equivalent (FTE) certified staff and 7.6 FTE support staff positions. Other than the Stettler Complex and Coronation, most schools will see only minor adjustments to staffing hours. Stettler Middle School will be down one teaching position, Wm. E. Hay will be down 2.7 teaching positions and Stettler Elementary will be down 0.4.

The Stettler Complex will also reduce its support staff by 3.7 FTE, and Coronation School will cut support staff by 4.4 FTE. The Coronation School Budget has met the board’s request that it deal with 50 per cent of its deficit in the 2013-14 year. Stettler Elementary was allocated $74,281 to top up funding for the full-time elementary program and pay the extra supervision costs related to the double-run busing schedule. Network administration costs of $12,000 were transferred from the Wm. E. Hay budget to central technology and the school resource officer. Costs were taken out of Wm. E. Hay expenses and allocated amongst all the schools. Patty Dittrick, Yvette Cassidy

and Peter Simons were the trustees who voted against the motion.

Modernization Approval was given to submit a Capital Plan to the Department of Education to modernize the Stettler Middle School. The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2013. Secretary Treasurer Lewis Hill, assured the trustees that changes can be made to the plan once submitted. For example, an amendment to include a gym at the Middle School would be favourably considered by the department if it were a joint venture with other community partners.

ALLIANCE

Join in the fun at July 1st weekend in Alliance Diane Dammann

ECA Review Submitted A bridal shower honouring Beth Holt, bride elect of Ralph Davidson, was held at the United Church on Sunday, May 25. Seated at the head table were Lila Davidson, groom’s mother, Helen Davidson, Margaret Davidson, groom’s sisters and Beth. A quiz about the bride provided some very good laughs. Beth and Ralph will be married next Saturday, June 1 with an open house and dance in the Community Hall. Jennifer and Ralph Boone of Edmonton, Margaret Davidson, Francis and Michelle Holt of Amisk, Helen and Brianne Madge of Fleet were all in town for the shower although Ralph Boone kept the men company at the Davidson farm. The annual Ken and Dot Findlay Memorial Golf Tournament was held on the weekend at Silver Creek Golf Course. The tournament was played indoors as a card game because of the rain. They used the various trailers as a venue for the card games. The winners of the ‘card golf’ were a team made up of Herb Smith, Raylene Bateman, Jordan Bateman and Nolan Menard. There were nine teams. Before the weekend was out, the weather cleared enough for some to actually play a round of golf. The Alliance grocery store held their grand opening on Monday, May 13 with cake, coffee and other refreshments.Winners of the draws for a $25 grocery voucher were: V. Clark, Connel, Margo Kun, Mrs. T., Ken Clough, Randy Wickstrom, Tyler Cameron and Laura Towers. Lynn and Denny Nielson are quite happy to have

grand daughter Sammie Nielson (5) of Tofield visiting for several days. Clarence and Trish Wold have been at their home in Alliance for a few days to get some farming done. Don’t forget the Strawberry Tea on Thursday, May 30 in support of the library. The July 1st committee met again this week. A car show, ball games, bunnock, croquette, face painting, balloon art, and, of course, food are already in the works. There will be a market at the arena in the area around the ice. That lovely multiplex building offers retreat from the sun, wind or rain if the day offers too much weather. Call me to enter your bunnock team. There will be croquette instruction available so come and join in the fun on the July 1st weekend in Alliance. The celebration for the 100th anniversary of W.I. Argyle Branch will take place on Sunday, June 30 in the Community Hall. The program is in place, the decorations planned, invitations out to all former members, train ride on track. A program at 1 pm will be open to one and all, no prior commitment, however if you wish to come for lunch, we need to know. The Centennial Garden marking 100 years of Women’s Institute in Alliance got the first trees planted on Saturday almost in the rain. It should be good weather for the trees to get started. The area for the bog garden, rock garden and dry creek bed have been marked out.

Uncomfortable In Your Clothes? Difficult to bend down and breathe? This is so much easier than straight dieting… “I was so uncomfortable before. When I would bend over to tie my shoes I could not breathe. I would get heart burn and shortness of breath. My muffin top exceeded my boobs and I didn’t like to dress up and go out. I was always pulling at my tops making sure my rolls were covered. Also, I didn’t sleep well, sometimes I just could not get to sleep. I went to hypnosis to lose weight. I am down 10lbs already. Hypnosis helps me with my food temptations, to replace the bad food with healthy food. Hypnosis helps me to see myself as a slim person and motivates me to exercise. I found the first thing that hypnosis helped with was my sleeping. I had trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. Now all I can say is “where have you been?”, now I feel great and I can sleep all night. This is so much easier than straight dieting. In other programs you learn how to cheat at their program. I don’t even think about cheating. I use to love licorice and now I have 4 bags in the house and I don’t even think about touching it. I don’t have to think about what I am going to wear, I’m comfortable with how I look. I don’t have to think about weight anymore.” Shirley E May 15, 2013

Students suffer for Conservative priorities Dear Editor, Students suffer from backwards Conservative priorities. Why has the federal government reduced the number of student summer jobs it sponsors when the youth job market still has not recovered from the recession? Under the Conservative government, the number of student summer jobs has been cut by tens of thousands since 2006.

Just a band-aid Dear Editor According to Canada Press, and other newspapers, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) wants the Federal Government to approve the irradiation of beef (supposedly to kill dangerous E-Coli). Irradiation is a process by which a food product is exposed to high doses of radiation to kill bacteria, parasites, and mold. In the U.S. three types of ionizing radiation are permitted: gamma rays, high-energy electrons and X-rays. I am told that both X-rays and gamma rays involve high energy photons which, when they strike a molecule, can disrupt that molecule. All kinds of other molecules can be created which may or may not be harmful. However, sometimes all it takes is one harmful molecule to randomly cause a cancer. Doug O’Halloran, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 401, says the processing line at the XL Foods Lakeside plant in Brooks moves too quickly. Between 300 and 320 carcasses go by workers every hour and employees make between 3000 and 4000 cuts a shift which has resulted in considerably less time to make sure knives are sanitized after each cut. Cattle are supposed to be washed before they enter to ensure their fur is free of manure, but sometimes the water is not hot enough to get off all the excrement, resulting in that excrement backing up on the killing floor forcing workers to traipse through the waste and track it through the plant. Dr. Patricia Whisnant, a graduate of the University of Tennessee College Of Veterinary Medicine (1981) says that 60 per cent of the largest United States meat plants failed to meet federal food safety regulations for preventing E. Coli bacteria in their products. What are the statistics in Canada? As Whisnant states “Irradiation may provide an excuse not to tackle the real sources and practices responsible for the contamination of beef‌mainly the filth in the confined environment of the feedlot and the fecal contamination that occurs in the high speed slaughter facility.â€? As Whisnant further states “Our efforts in the meat industry should be aimed at removing the filth from the source, not just making cow manure safer to eat.â€? While the CCA says its proposal calls for irradiated beef to be clearly labeled, irradiation is just a band-aid on the problem. It is better to deal with the origins of the problem and not irradiate at all. Joyce Neufeld Waldeck, Saskatchewan

Fewer students are getting help to create a summer job where they can earn their first work experience and money to pay for their education. This cut couldn’t have come at a worse time. Youth unemployment is double the national rate and there are 231,000 fewer youth jobs in Canada since the recession. It’s a tough economy these days for our young people. Bizarrely, instead of investing in our youth by creating student summer jobs, the Conservatives chose to spend millions of taxpayer dollars on trying to snow job Canadians with their shameless self-promoting commercials. Every time one of these brutal Harper ads interrupts your NHL playoff game, know that the $95,000 cost of it could have paid for 32 student summer jobs! Or in other words, for every one second these ads are on the air, another unemployed young Canadian could have had a job, but is going without. It’s a travesty. The government’s priorities seem to have been set in a bubble, completely walled off from the reality that Canadian families are facing. That’s not good enough. We should be doing more to help youth until their job market recovers, not less. Rodger Cuzner, MP, Liberal Party of Canada Human Resources and Skills Development Critic

A single grazing day too early in spring loses three days in fall Agri-News With last year’s early start to winter and now a late spring, many cow/calf producers are running out of feed. As a means of dealing with feed shortages, cattle are being turned out early on pasture. In an Agri-News article last week, Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, discussed cow/calf nutrition and grazing banked forage. In this article, Grant Lastiwka, forage specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, will discuss grazing of early forage growth. Choice of forage species, health and fertility of the stand, using a grazing plan where stocking rate X grazing days is in conservative balance to pasture carrying capacity, or having excess acres of pasture all allow for an earlier start to the grazing season. “For early spring grazing, some producers are using grass species planted specifically for very early spring growth,” says Lastiwka. “Crested wheat grass or winter cereals start growing as the snow disappears. Crested wheat grass is a key early spring pasture in southern parts of the prairies or in other parts of the provinces that tend to have more dry climates. Its use allows for the later growing tame or native pastures to not be grazed before they are ready. “Annuals such as fall rye, winter triticale and winter wheat also provide early spring grazing and may be cut for grain later in the summer. Some other grasses such as meadow smooth or hybrid brome grass, Kentucky blue grass, quack grass and Russian wild rye are a bit later to come, but still provide relatively early spring grazing. Having some of these species allows earlier turnout without negatively affecting this year’s future

pasture production or cow/calf performance.” Pasture stands that are healthy or have been fertilized will also have faster new green growth in spring. These are pastures most often managed using planned or controlled grazing. Graziers using planned grazing usually use shorter grazing periods with long rests for plant nutrient recovery between grazings. The key is the rest period. Rest is “on plant time” or biological time and cannot be simply determined by calendar days. In spring when moisture and sunlight are excellent, biological rest is shorter for plants. In summer, biological rest is longer as growth slows. Some pastures have a second or third grazing as long as plant growth habit or moist conditions allow for sufficient regrowth for plant nutrient recovery. “For producers who do not have 3 to 3 ½ leaves of new growth per plant, grazing before this really sets back these plants and your pocketbook,” says Lastiwka. “This is where the Hugo Gross of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada ruleof-thumb came from, Hugo found that one day too early grazing in spring forage pastures gave about three days less grazing in the fall. “This is a very important shortfall as we know from Alberta Agriculture senior economist Dale Kaliel’s benchmark AgriProfit$ work, that grazing longer has been a tool used to cut costs and create profits for many Alberta cow/calf producers. Work by the Western Forage Beef Group at Lacombe showed grazing to be half the cost of conventional winter feeding.” Cost for traditional winter feeding now is over $2/day, which means that grazing one day too early may result in losing $5 net this fall by an earlier start to feeding. Reduction in herbage biomass Cont’d from Pg 8 Grazing readiness for a new plant is commonly thought to be at the 3 to 3 ½ leaf stage. Llewelyn Manske of North Dakota research on this subject also showed that: “...grazing during early spring prior to range readiness also deprives grass plants of needed leaf area and results in reductions in grass growth, herbage production, and economic returns. “Starting grazing before the third-leaf stage, as does the season-long treatment with grazing starting May 15, causes a reduction in herbage biomass production (-45%), which causes reductions in stocking rate (-29%), calf average daily gain (ADG) (-14%), and calf gain per acre (-40%) compared to stocking rate, calf average daily gain, and calf gain per acre on the seasonlong treatment with grazing starting after the third-leaf stage. “This reduction in animal performance causes a decrease in net returns (gross minus pasture and forage costs) per

cow-calf pair (-80%) and per acre (-89%) compared to net returns per cow-calf pair and per acre on the season-long treatment with grazing starting after the third-leaf stage. “For those producers grazing this early growth that is less than the 3 to 3 ½ leaf stage, once other pastures are ready, give the early-grazed pastures all of 2013 to recover,” says Lastiwka. “They will need it to be productive in 2014.”

Unusual and quite varied soil moisture levels across the province Agri-News Late fall and early spring conditions have caused some unusual and quite varied soil moisture levels across the province. North of Red Deer, many areas saw snow packs persisting well into April. Much of the province experienced a cold April that has been seen fewer than half a dozen times over the past 50 years. “In stark contrast, May marked the beginning of warm, generally dry weather throughout the province, with most areas enjoying sustained above average temperatures,” says Ralph Wright, branch head of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development’s agro-meterological applications and modeling section. “This was precisely what was needed to kick start spring seeding. Unfortunately, soil moisture reserves are dwindling due to lack of rainfall, but the province’s typical wet season, June and July, is just around the corner.”

Several maps have been posted on Alberta Agriculture’s website, in particular a map that details the April 2013 temperatures relative to long-term normal, 15-day temperatures relative to long-term normal as of May 20, and growing season precipitation accumulations relative to long-term normal as of May 20. “Recently, and as is often the case in Alberta, significant shifts in weather patterns have occurred over the span of a few days,” says Wright. “The first two weeks in May were another example of this, with parts of the province seeing the warmest sustained temperatures during the first half of May in over 50 years, which were perfect for seeding operations.” Generally below normal precipitation accumulations have occurred over most of the province, with many areas seeing conditions this dry on average less than once in three to six years. Deeper deficits are beginning to develop through the central

Peace Region and along TransCanada highway, between Calgary and Brooks. However, for most areas, the last week in May typically marks the start of the wet season, which persists until the first week of July in southern Alberta, and well into early August throughout the Peace Region. “Late snow melt and a quick start to spring have left most areas with adequate surface moisture,” says Wright. “The soil moisture deficits portrayed in the mentioned maps are typically at deeper levels and should cause no concern given a return to normal precipitation patterns.” Did you know that you can now track local thunderstorms updating every 10 minutes? The Google map interface at www.agriculture.alberta.ca/acis/weatherradar.jsp allows you to zoom right to your area with storm track accuracy, generally within about 1000 meters. Additional maps can be found on the ACIS website: www.agriculture.alberta.

Standing up for food safety Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot The Conservative government is committed to making food as safe as possible for Canadian families. We are also committed to supporting Canada’s beef industry. Throughout my tenure as your Member of Parliament, I have always taken every opportunity to sell our beef in Japan and in Taiwan. During meetings with virtually every foreign representative in Canada when I was Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I always siad that Alberta’s Beef is the best in the world. We all remember the BSE Crisis that hurt our local beef producers and the recent E. coli scare at the plant in Brooks, Alberta. Our government hasn’t forgotten either and we are moving forward to bolster confidence in our beef industry for Canadian consumers and our world-wide customers. Canada already has a worldclass food safety system. Our food safety-science capabilities are among the best. The Safe Foods for Canadians Action Plan aims to further improve Canada’s food safety system by strengthening food safety rules, provide more

effective inspection, and renew our commitment to service and more information for Canadian consumers. This is welcome news for our local beef producers in Crowfoot and beyond. Through the Action Plan, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will launch a number of significant food safety enhancements over the next two years. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz has directed the CFIA to work with consumer groups and industries to develop new regulations that will bring into action the Safe Food for Canadians Act, passed in November 2012. The CFIA is strengthening some of its beef safety rules and has implemented new mandatory requirements that will further control E. coli in federally registered beef plants. Also, in the next two months, federally registered plants that produce mechanically tenderized beef cuts, such as steaks or roasts, will be required to label those products as tenderized and include cooking instructions. While these actions are specific to federally registered plants, Health Canada also intends to

propose broader mandatory labels to identify beef that has been mechanically tenderized at retail outlets like supermarkets. This voluntary practice has been in place since 2012. Since 2006, our Agriculture Ministers and our International Trade Ministers have made considerable progress opening up markets around the world for Canada’s Agricultural products. We have even managed to expand existing markets. The Food Safety Action Plan includes the CFIA’s building a secure electronic interface so it can share information and conduct transactions more effectively with industry and international partners, and introduce a clear, consistent set of inspection and enforcement rules that will significantly reduce red tape for Canadian food producers. These high-profile food safety efforts add value to our products and are further proof of Canada’s commitment to provide the cleanest, safest, best-tasting products available in the global market. Our effort presents a challenge to our international competitors to meet these high standards.

Coronation 4-H Beef Club news Rayanna Ramsay Club Reporter Our 4-H Beef Club sure has been busy! On February 22 we had our Public Speaking Competition. We started with our speeches and it was followed by supper. After supper, we had impromptus. The placings were as follows: Junior: 1st Rayanna Ramsay, 2nd Koryn Duncan and 3rd Aiden Kobi. Intermediate: first Ryley Ramsay, second Kyla Duncan and third Jessica Kuwzi. Senior: first Eric Rodvang, second Corey Twa and third Jenna Sieger. Semi District speeches were held

in Brownfield and Rayanna Ramsay placed 3rd in the junior category and Eric Rodvang was awarded 1st in the senior category. District Public Speaking was held in Castor where Rayanna Ramsay placed 3rd and she went to Regionals in Sedgewick. On Saturday April 27 we had a “Mock Achievement Day” at Dryland Trading in Veteran. We attended three clinics. One was about clipping and grooming and it was presented by Leanne Carfantan. We also took part in a judging clinic and it was presented by

Maureen Mappin-Smith. Our showmanship clinic was presented by Curtis Perry. Our group of 31 members enjoyed the warm sunny day and learned a lot, which will be put to good use at our club and district shows. On Sunday, May 5 we had our highway clean up on Highway 872. We also collected used batteries for a fundraiser. We are working hard to get our calves ready for the club show and district show on June 4 - 5 in Coronation. The results of the shows will be coming soon.

Hanna 4-H Clubs update Bethany Zacharias

ECA Review Journalist In February the Dry Land MultiClub went on a two day clipping workshop, presented by Mike Early. At this workshop members got their steers and heifers ready for the Oyen Beef Congress. It also gave members a chance to break-in their animals. On May 20, three members took their steers to Oyen for the Jack

Pot Steer Show where they placed third, fourth and fifth. On May 21, Brody Tattrie, Jaxen Tattrie, Dixon Tattrie, Kate Nelson and Ainsley Nelson brought their steers to the Carcass Calfs Live Evaluation. Since then their steers have gone to slaughter and on May 29 in Drumheller members will go to see their grated carcasses. This is done to show members what an actual carcass looks like without its hide.

The Market Steer Project members are Austin Andrew, Clayton Andrew, Kate Nelson, Spencer MacMillan, Sarah MacMillan, Jace Powell and Katie MacPherson. Members in the Market Steer Project will acquire an understanding of the production and management side of the beef cattle industry through the hands-on work they will do with their project animal.

OBITUARY

Up for any challenge that life dealt her BLUME - Elsie was born October 23, 1926 in Galahad, AB. She was the sixth daughter to Clark and Carrie Jackson. She had five sisters and three brothers. Her brothers and sisters were a very strong part of her life. Elsie finished school in Castor and then went to work at the Castor Hospital for six and a half years. During this time she met her lifelong friend Gwen Coppock. Elsie and Gwen shared a lifetime of laughter together raising their families just miles apart. This friendship expanded into an Blume everlasting Coppock/Blume family tie with many family celebrations shared together. On February 10, 1951 Elsie married Reuben Blume. Together they raised their four children- Trudie June (Simkin), Daryl Reuben, Ellen Tammy Lee (Knibbs) and Ryan John. Elsie and Reuben raised purebred Hereford cows on their farm just north of Castor. They were members of many community organizations and always found time for family gatherings. Elsie loved life, loved her family, loved her friends, loved her garden, loved cooking and most of all she loved to have fun. Her contagious laugh was hard to ignore and she was always up for any challenge that life dealt her. She had a wonderful sense of humour and was always up for a good joke whether it be naughty or nice. She endured many hardships during her lifetime. Reuben passed away suddenly on November 4, 1977 at the age of 50. Elsie strived on as she continued living and helping on the farm with her son Daryl. In 1979 she began working at the Magnet store where she adored the work she did in the produce department for 20 years. During these years is where her creativity and love for gardening really shone. She could turn any flower bouquet and fruit platter into a magnificent work of art. Elsie loved the outdoors, spending many days fishing with Otto Kneller and his family. Her cooking and baking skills will never be forgotten. Elsie adored all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved nothing more than spending time with each of them. She was a picture of strength and was iron-willed. She cared deeply for her friends, family and everyone who she met. In her later years when Elsie’s health started to decline, she moved to Town where her strong will and fight for life helped her overcome many hardships. She eventually moved into the Castor Lodge where she spent endless nights playing cards and laughing with her friends. Elsie passed away peacefully at the Castor Extended Care where she was surrounded by her family and friends in her last few days. She lived a full life complete with laughter and sorrow and we are all blessed that we were able to have her love in our lives. Her contagious laugh and

love of life will be deeply missed. She leaves to mourn her loss, her children Trudie (Robert) Simkin, Daryl (Dale) Blume, Tammy (Kim) Knibbs and Ryan (Sandra) Blume; her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Lisa (Jason) James their children Spencer and Tori, Alison (Todd) Schauer and their children Madelyn, Mikenna and Owen, Darcy Simkin, Kimberly (Dave) Simkin, Patricia (Mark) Kelts their children William and Isabelle, Kelsey (Corwyn) Rossing their children Dylan, Austin and Connor, Jonathan Blume, Dana (Ian) Griebel, Christopher and Andrew Knibbs, Ashley, Tyler and Evan Blume; her sister Bernice Berg; and sisters-in-law Grace Jackson, Marie Jackson and Ardith Jackson; along with many nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband Reuben Blume, grandson Graham Simkin, sisters Vera (Willy) Brown (George) Holben, Dorotha (Bob) Bunbury, Edna (Earl) Hill and Marie (Frank) Dunkle, brothers Elmer Jackson, Arnold Jackson, Howard Jackson and brother-inlaw, Len Berg and special friend Otto Kneller. Funeral services were held at Knox United Church, Castor, Alberta on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 with Reverend Barbara Zimmerman officiating. Tributes were presented by Alison Schauer and Kay Hauck; poem “When Tomorrow Starts Without Me” was read by granddaughter Kelsey Rossing. Wendy Coppock sang “I Heard The Voice Of Jesus Say.” Knox United Church choir was leader of song accompanied by Cathy Schaffner on the piano for the hymns. Elsie was laid to rest beside her husband Reuben in the Castor Municipal Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. with her loving grandchildren as pallbearers. Honourary pallbearers were the Doug Coppock Family, the Otto Kneller Family as well as her special nieces and nephews. Family and friends gathered at the Castor Community Hall for a time of fellowship and a luncheon by Michelle Breum. Condolences may be viewed or sent to the family at www.parkviewfuneralchapels.com Parkview Funeral Chapels & Crematorium entrusted with the care and funeral arrangements. 403-882-3141.

Box 570 Calgary, Alberta T2E 9Z9 or charity of choice Arrangements were entrusted to Cathy Watts of Heartland Funeral Services Ltd 403 854 2758 But Not Forgotten By Dorothy Parker I think no matter where you stray, That I shall go with you a way. Though you may wander sweeter lands, You will not forget my hands. Nor yet the way I held my head, Nor the tremulous things I said. You will still see me, small and white And smiling, in the secret night. And feel my arms about you when The day comes fluttering back again. I think, no matter where you be, You’ll hold me in your memory. And keep my image there without me, By telling later loves about me.

How golfers hate those bunkers!

Bunkers can cause a lot of frustration for golfers.

Bunkers are the nightmare of many a golfer, causing huge frustration and quickly ruining a golf score. As in all aspects of the game, the right technique and regular practice with a sand wedge is the key to success. Getting out of a sand trap successfully means taking an open stance and positioning yourself with the ball centred between your feet. Right-handed golfers should align their shoulders slightly to the left of the target. Don’t grip the club too tightly. Then all you have to do is open the clubface, hit about three centimetres behind the ball, and complete your swing. When all is said and done, it is the sand that propels the ball out of the bunker. If your swing is too short, or if you

don’t open up your clubface enough, your ball may very well stay in the sand. On the other hand, by hitting the ball directly there’s a good chance that it will end up on the other side of the green. If the sand trap is fairly shallow and there is a good distance between you and the flag, a pitching wedge or a 9 iron may be used in order to roll the ball. In short, the aim of most golfers is to get out of the bunker on the first shot and thus avoid a catastrophic score. In order to improve your technique and feel at ease in this type of obstacle, don’t hesitate to ask for some tips from your golf pro. What’s more, many golf courses have sand traps on their practice ranges, enabling golfers to perfect their technique.

Golfers should be aware that the design and characteristics of a shaft can vary from one manufacturer to another. Heavier and less expensive than those made of graphite, steel shafts normally have a lower flex, or kick point, which contributes to better stroke control. Renowned for their lightness, graphite shafts absorb vibrations more effectively. More and more golfers prefer to use graphite shafts for their drivers and fairway woods in order to optimize power. On the other hand, they are more likely to use steel shafts for their irons to increase precision. Because of their light weight, graphite shafts are better suited to women, older players, and

those who have joint problems. Some golfers prefer flexible shafts, while others are more comfortable with rigid shafts. These days, the majority of clubs are adjustable. The length, the angle of the club head (loft), the shaft, and the grip can all be adjusted, taking into account the swing and the physical characteristics of the golfer. The best way to make the right choice is to try the different types of shaft. Another good idea is to consult a specialist who will be able to steer you in the right direction, according to your game style and your budget.

Whichever way you look at it, a practice session is never as much fun as a round of golf on your favourite course, especially with good company. But more regular visits to the practice range are sure to have an impact on your score card. Even though a lot of golfers are already in the habit of warming up with a basket of balls on the driving range, it is wise to structure this exercise so that it doesn’t turn into a race against the clock. Golfers should try and think of these practice sessions as real golf games. After about ten minutes of stretching, take a few minutes to practice swinging with your different clubs. After this, choose some targets on the practice range and change clubs with each swing. This will enable you to get in some practice with your woods, your long irons, and your short irons. Don’t let the width and lack of obstacles on the driving range fool you. Giving yourself some targets to aim for is important here, as it’s very easy to just hit the ball without having to worry about the lake on the right, the trees to the left, or the bunker straight ahead. At the end of the session, take about ten minutes to practice your precision shots with your wedges within a radius of 20 to 50 yards. You’ll also benefit from practicing your putts over varying distances on the practice green before starting your round of golf. This will give you a better idea of the speed of the course’s greens. With all those great practice shots fresh in your mind, you’ll be all set to start your round of golf.

Equipment for young beginners

The driver: increasingly effective If there is one piece of golfing equipment that has very much evolved over the years, it has to be the 1-wood, more commonly called a driver these days. We’ve come a long way from the time when woods were actually made of wood and the best golfers struggled to reach the 250yard mark with them. Today, manufacturers compete to find ever more ingenious ways to build aerodynamic drivers that combine more power and better accuracy. Unlike the olden days, drivers are now available in different colours and are made with increasingly ef ficient materials. They are also manufactured with bigger and bigger heads. The widening of the hot spot, the addition of weights made of tungsten or other materials, and a better centre of gravity

all aim to increase the length of drives and especially to enhance precision. Apart from these improvements, manu facturers have also developed another series of clubs over the last few years — adjustable drivers. The heads of these clubs can be adjusted to different angles, ranging from 8.5 to 12 de grees, depending on the model. That makes it possible to adjust the shaft to various positions (open, closed, or normal). These adjustments allow gol fers to correct a hook or a slice or even to hit the ball lower or higher, depending on weather conditions. There’s no question; technologywise, everything is being done to help golfers hit their drives further and with more precision.

Drivers have really evolved over the last few years.

Grounds for mixing business and pleasure

Golf is a great game for building friendships, socializing, and forming business relationships. The greens are not just an ideal place to meet people who share the same passion; by golfing you can widen your circle of contacts and build trusting

relationships with clients and business partners. Whether you’re a manager of a large enterprise or just a salesperson starting your career, there’s no hierarchy on a golf course. The chairman of the board and the new office employee might very well share the same golf cart, discuss many different subjects, and become loyal golf partners. A few golf games with potential clients could lead to interesting business opportunities in the short or long term. There’s no telling how

Every golf game is a great opportunity to widen your social circle.

many deals have been discussed between the first and eighteenth holes and then sealed over drinks at the club house. A golf tournament is a great opportunity to bring employees in the same office closer together and to meet people from surprisingly diverse backgrounds. A simple golf game is often the perfect occasion to widen your social circle. Joining a golf club also allows you to develop a sense of belonging and strengthen ties with other members. Of course golf can have disadvantages for some of us, especially beginners. It can be a great sport but also a very frustrating one, so it’s always important to control your emotions. It is often said that the behaviour of golfers on the course is a reflection of their true personality. So, you’d better make a good impression!

If your children express an interest in learning how to play golf, it is possible to start them off on the right foot with equipment that not only meets their needs but that also fits into the family’s budget. There is no point in spending a fortune if your little Tiger Woods decides to give up after a few rounds! Opt for second hand clubs to start with. It is not necessary to buy children a complete set; they can easily manage with eight clubs (3, 5, 7, and 9 irons, a pitching wedge, a driver, a fairway wood or hybrid, and a putter). Be sure to check the condition of the grips and replace them if necessary. It is also possible to buy a used bag, but be sure to choose one that is not too heavy and that is equipped with a tripod stand. Good deals can usually be found on last year’s inventory of shoes and clothing. Balls, tees, and a glove complete a child’s first set of golf gear. New players should always take a few lessons from a professional before tackling a first round of golf. The correct techniques they’ll learn will always stand them in good stead. After a few sessions on the practice range, a par-3 course is ideal to start with, combined with regular visits to the driving range to perfect their swings. As soon as their level of play improves, beginners will be able to use a full set of clubs and play on a regular golf course.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on equipment for a young beginner golfer.

Farewell Speech: Excerpts from the speech by Gina Groger Tonight we come before you as the senior class of 2013. Many of you have watched us grow up – from rambunctious kindergarteners, to hormonal junior high students, and now, to the mature, and not so mature *cough Benson* young men and women that we have transformed into. To be concluding this adventure is not only an achievement for us as individuals, but one that is shared between us all. I personally could not ask for a better group to be sharing this stage with me this evening. We have reached this significant milestone together, and with it the close of the initial chapter in our lives, but if anything, we have learned that for whatever is yet to come, with the support of our friends, family, and community, we will

never have to face our challenges alone. Even as my friends sit before you, intelligent, determined, and driven, it is out of the question that we got to where we are today by ourselves. It’s an overused cliché, but there is no better description than the famous saying, “it takes a village to raise a child,” and that is why I want to extend thanks on behalf of our graduating class to so many. First, I would like to address the parents. As our parents and guardians, you know all too well our struggles of high school. You were never too busy or too tired for any one of the insignificant and endless problems we seemed to face. From the beginning you were our support systems. Our dirty diapers, scratches and tears turned into bad report cards, crushes, and ugh…puberty. Through all of the sports, the meets, the tournaments,

the festivals, drama, homework and exams, you, our parents were there behind us, 100 per cent of the way with encouragement and unconditional love. To you we owe our morals, our values, and our ethics. You have provided us all with the foundation upon which we will build the rest of our lives. Whatever is in store for us, we know that we will always have a safe and loving place to come home to. To our elementary teachers, whatever school my classmates may be from, you have instilled inside of us the seeds of life. Creativity, manners, and basic skills that even today we continue to build on. Well before you today, is the fruit of your labour. Without your determination and kindness we would not be the students that we have grown into. To our junior high teachers, for keeping us out of trouble as much as you could! For

keeping us in line and simultaneously managing to educate us, and prepare us for Mr. Muhlbeier’s infamous homework load, we owe you so much more than a simple thank you. Mr. Peterson’s drive is reflected in many students before us today. And to Mrs. Fletcher, our junior high days are dearly missed, with your imagination, and creativity…and yes-we do actually use Power in real life. Finally to our high school teachers, who bravely embraced the rollercoaster we know as diploma preparation. You have all taken so much time to help, teach, and coach us. Definitely underpaid, you have had to endure almost as much as our parents! Unphased by the drama and attitude given daily, you always kept us and our futures in mind, even when we all thought you just hated us. can guarantee will not be forgotten, and your efforts will not be lost on our class. It may take longer than graduation, but eventually every single one of us will understand the great lengths you took to help us succeed, and reach our goals. Thank you. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank our community members. You all have watched out for us, made sure we were relatively well behaved, and helped in keeping us safe. The best thing about growing up in a small town is that everyone knows everyone. It’s guaranteed that you will always be greeted with a smile, which is sure to brighten the day. With that in mind however, it’s probably also the worst thing, I mean it sure makes things difficult sometimes, like when Tanya, Alyssa and I were sent uptown for Mr. H, and were stopped by three parents

threatening to call our mothers! Now, it would be really peachy to tell everyone here that all of us were straight ‘A’ students, who always handed in our homework on time, never sassed our teachers, and certainly never had waterfights with Mr. Faber…right Nicole? However, we all know that that is not always how life works. No one is perfect, except for you of course Dallyn, and it is with our imperfections, our mistakes and our learning that we have been stitched closer together. To all of my classmates, you are wonderful people. I honestly could not ask for a more unique and special collaboration of people to celebrate with tonight. Class of 2013!

Mike Green

by Tori Canadine Good evening friends, family, teachers and honored guests. I am Tori Canadine, this years valedictorian, and am privileged to be speaking on behalf of the 2013 graduating class. First of all I would like to congratulate my fellow classmates for making it here and realizing that all of our hard work has paid off. Most of us have been with each other since elementary and its hard to believe that soon we will be parting ways. It seems like only yesterday we were little elementary kids trying to learn the alphabet and to count to 10, although my mom might disagree with the counting part. Now, here we find ourselves at the end of three memory filled years of high school. This is where true friendships were formed, personalities were shaped and

identities were becoming more apparent. We were beginning to figure out who was not afraid to speak their mind- Tarisa, who thought only of sports- Brandon, who always had a confused look in physicsErin and I and finally which guys were still the most immature- Geoff, Mike. Now with this chapter of our lives coming to a close, we are excited for the next beginning. We will forge new friendships, walk the halls of new schools and get to know new teachers. Remember to enjoy this experience as many say it will be one of the best times of your life. This journey through school and life

would not be possible if it were not for our parents. Yes, there were times when it seemed you were out to get us and that you had lost your minds. Looking back on these times now, we realize you were doing the best for us and molding us into future adults. You will always be there for us and we appreciate this more than you can ever know. Next, we would like to thank the community for their support in making this special day possible. The words of encouragement we have received when out in the community fundraising have meant a great deal to us.

Lastly, I would also like to thank all of our teachers for putting up with us, and dedicating their time into making this journey possible. From our elementary teachers all the way up to high school, each and every one of you has contributed to our success to this point. You are not only our mentors, but also our friends and we hope you feel the same way about us. In closing, I want to leave you with a quote that I think ties in with our theme. “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending”. Thank you and have a great evening.

To Our Wise Graduates… We wish you health, good fortune and happiness as you begin a new chapter. Continue to work hard, and success will follow. Congratulations!
