Issues associated with shopping on-line. BEWARE!

Fake Online Reviews – Be skeptical of reviews that lack detail, or are too positive. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter may provide a stronger, direct relationship to people’s opinions. Check the source - does it link to the reviewer’s profile and previous reviews or a social media page that shows the reviewer is real? Lack of Full Cost Disclosure – Additional fees like shipping, may be hidden until late in the checkout process. Remember there is “no free lunch”, in other words you’re going to pay for delivery one way or the other. Counterfeit Goods – If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Order Never Arrives – Millions of items get lost in shipping every year. Identity Theft – Identity theft and fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain. If someone steals your debit card number, your entire checking account is exposed. Within minutes, identity thieves can drain your account and set you back financially for years. This holiday season shop local and support the merchants in your community. Local merchants and staff are very knowledgeable about their products which helps ease the decision making process when shopping. The value of quality customer service and expert advice goes a long way to achieve customer satisfaction. Shop local and experience the difference quality customer service and expert advice make.

Creating Magical Memories in the Village continued from front cover

Moms and dads will enjoy the Festive Artisans Market with goodie baskets, jewellery, tree ornaments, kid and adult apparel, toys, hostess gifts and more.

The 41st Annual Mississauga Santa Claus Parade will be held on Sunday, November 29th in the Village of Streetsville, along Queen Street beginning at 1:00 p.m. The parade draws around 50,000 people each year so be sure to arrive early to reserve your spot!

In this season of giving, help those in need by building a mountain of food for The Compass – bring a non-perishable food item and fill the Xtreme Tire Garage oversized, motorized grocery cart! Music will fill the hearts of all visitors as the Heather Brissenden Trio sing songs as well as sing-a-long carols throughout the afternoon.

You won’t want to miss out on the creatively decorated, festive floats as they make their way down Queen Street South to Old Station Road. This year’s parade will include two new floats in the shape of presents. The penguins are back for a second year! Marching bands, gymnasts and other talented participants will be parading down the street in their festive attire. Letters from Santa will be collected along the parade route along with toys for Toys for Tots. Santa’s elves, and other popular characters will be handing out treats and other special giveaways. Tim Hortons will have coffee kiosks along the parade route.

At 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. join the Tree Lighting festivities. Prior to the tree coming to life, enjoy caroling and watch the teachers and students of Lowe’s School of Music and the Heather Brissenden Trio light up the market square with entertainment. Santa will be strolling the Tree Lighting ceremony to see who is naughty and nice and special gifts will be awarded to those who attend. Christmas at Port Street Market is located at 129 – 139 Lakeshore Road East (southwest corner of Hurontario Street and Lakeshore Road).

SickKids Hero Anisa Ashe will join the parade this year as a honoured guest. Anisa is diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, Larsen Syndrome. Anisa is a Mississauga resident and a 2016 Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child presented by Walmart.

Lighting up the Lighthouse returns to the village on Tuesday, December 1st from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Celebrate the season with this spectacular event, as The Port Credit Lighthouse is illuminated with twinkling Christmas lights. Peel Chrysler Fiat sponsors the event. Enjoy free refreshments, Christmas carols and crafts for the children. To the delight of the children, there will be a very special visitor; Santa Claus will be in attendance! Be sure to bring along a donation for charity including a food contribution for the Compass Food Bank, or new mittens for the Mitten Tree.

Last but not least, the moment you have all been waiting for, the arrival of our guest of honour, zooming in on his magic sleigh, straight from the North Pole. Santa Claus arrives just in time for the grand finale to spread Christmas joy and cheer with the masses.

The Village of Port Credit’s Holiday Events

The 18th Annual Footprints of Christmas is happening December 3rd, 4th and 5th from 6:30 p.m. - 8:45 p.m. Visit St. Andrew’s Memorial Presbyterian Church to go on a free live journey to encounter three wise men, shepherds tending to their sheep and a newborn child in a manger. Each tour lasts about 20 minutes where you can experience this outdoor production, and witness the live animals. Free refreshments will also be served. St. Andrews Presbyterian Church is located at 24 Stavebank Road in Port Credit. For more details contact the church by phone at 905-2788907.

The Village of Port Credit will also be filled with holiday spirit, with Christmas events happening throughout the month leading up to Christmas. Christmas at Port Street Market is happening on Saturday, November 28th from noon to 6:00 p.m. Come experience the magic of Christmas and experience the thrill of indoor and outdoor events at Port Street Market. The all-day, fun-filled family event starts at noon with a special a la carte brunch menu at Ten Restaurant & Wine Bar. Santa will stroll through the restaurant and chat with the children.

Join us for the 41st Annual Caroling in the Park on Monday, December 14th at Memorial Park in Port Credit from 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. This festive community tradition is the perfect reason to meet your friends and neighbours in the village and participate in the singing of some of your favourite Christmas carols. Complimentary warm cranberry punch and shortbread cookies will be provided. Remember to dress warm and bring your flashlight and a mug. Donations of non-perishable food items are greatly appreciated.

At 1:00 p.m., Santa will move outside to his sleigh where families, friends and pets can have their pictures taken with him. There is no cost for the photos, but donations to ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas in support of the local Food Bank are encouraged. A variety of Interactive Ice Sculptures and a Carving Demonstration also will be at Port Street Market. Children will love the “Kids Cool Canvas Activity” – a great opportunity to paint their own murals on ice allowing their inner creativity to show. Challenge friends, siblings and parents to a game of Ring Toss, a game that includes seven interesting ice sculpture designs, and rubber rings. At 3:00 p.m. don’t miss the exceptional carving demonstration with a professional who will show the process behind creating an ice sculpture.

The 7th Annual ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas returns to Port Credit. This year ‘Twas the Bite is hosting four events and a Turkey Drive in support of The Compass and The Mississauga Food Bank to Fight Hunger and Feed Hope. Last year an outstanding $50,000 was raised. Your donations this year will help ‘Twas the Bite reach their goal of a million meals! ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas Family Friendly Turkey Dinner on Tuesday, December 8th from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. at Oasis Banquet Hall. Canadian comedian Pete Zedlacher hosts this charity event. Tickets are $40 per person, or a table for 10 for $400. For information and tickets call 905-278-7742 or email info@portcredit.com. Heart House Hospice Bring It Home sign unveiling

Taste of Streetsville Celebrates Another Successful Year

By Albert Peres

By Lindsay Howe The 7th Annual Taste of Streetsville was a great success! Streetsville residents and people from across the GTA came out to enjoy some of the best culinary delights the village has to offer, while also supporting a worthy cause.

A grassy field, the former location of the old Pheasant Run School, was the site of a sign unveiling and the new Bring It Home capital campaign launch announcement. Heart House Hospice is purchasing the property that sits amidst a beautiful park located in the Winston Churchill Boulevard and Burnhamtorpe Road West area. The location will become the future permanent home of the organization.

This year 12 of Streetsville’s most celebrated restaurants took part in the Taste of Streetsville, along with 2 cafes participating in Just a Taste of Streetsville.

Hearth House Hospice provides a unique and much appreciated service to residents of the City of Mississauga. A Hospice brings a multi-disciplinary approach and provides the special kind of medical care needed by people who are terminally ill. This level of care attends to a patient’s pain and physical symptoms as well as to their emotional and spiritual needs. Heart House Hospice currently provides wellness programming, complementary therapies, spiritual care, and counseling, as well as, in-home and caregiver support, an understand grief program directed to children living in a home where someone is dying, and bereavement support. The Bring It Home campaign with its ambitious $18 million fundraising target, will allow Heart House Hospice to build a well-designed modern facility that will include the addition of ten specialized hospice beds as a residential component to their program and start a sustainability fund that will ensure hospice care will remain in the place for the residents of Mississauga and surrounding area.

This month long culinary festival motivates people to try out different eateries in the village and experience the eclectic styles and flavours Streetsville has to offer. Hundreds of people came out to experience these renowned restaurants and take advantage of their special prix fixe menus. Prix fie menus included a savoury appetizer, entrée and delectable dessert, all for the low price of $30!

John Snobelen, former MPP stated, ‘This project will address an important need in our community. It will not only provide ten residential hospice beds but it will insure that family care and support is provided. I am very impressed with the breadth of services and the engagement of volunteers in the provision of those services.’ Mayor Bonnie Crombie noted, ‘Mississauga is a growing City and residents need important frontline healthcare, including modern and accessible residential hospice care here in our community.’

An exceptional $2000 was raised for Trillium Health Partners Foundation. The money will go towards the redevelopment of the Credit Valley Hospital emergency department. The Streetsville BIA is proud to announce that the Taste of Streetsville has raised a grand total of $10,000 for the hospital over the years. This money has gone a long way to help Trillium Health Partners Foundation dramatically improve the patient experience at Credit Valley Hospital, by creating more efficient, specialized care zones.

The organization faces two challenges, both of them monetary. First they must complete the purchase of the property, which is currently held under a lease-to-buy arrangement. Once this is done, they must collect the funds for the construction of the residential hospice.

Taste of Streetsville gives all of us a reason to go out, enjoy great food and a lively atmosphere, all the while supporting a great cause. A heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone who came out to support the Taste of Streetsville and contributed to the event being such a success!

President of the Board of Heart House Hospice, Colin Campbell said, ‘It is a great honour to have Mayor Bonnie Crombie take a leadership role with our campaign. We are also tremendously pleased that John Snobelen will lead our journey. They join a growing cabinet of committed community leaders including Saverio Di Mondo, Rabbi Lawrence Englander, Paul Fletcher, Doug Kilner, Todd Ladner, Norm Loberg, Jim Murray, Myles Robinson, Kirin Singh, Cheryl Englander, Domenic Ruso, Charlene Shevlen and Randy Wright. Halloween in Streetsville Village By Lindsay Howe

Spooktacular Halloween was brewing with fun at Vic Johnston Arena on Saturday, October 24th. The banquet hall was packed with children, excited to visit the various craft tables. Each table was set up with fun Halloween activities for the kids to engage in. Over 300 kids attended the event, dressed in their costumes, eager to participate in the festivities.

The first 300 children in attendance received vouchers to pick up special Halloween loot bags filled with goodies. The contents of the loot bags were generously donated by the Streetsville Businesses. Speaking of generosity, a mammoth amount of food donations was collected, along with monetary donations for Eden Food For Change. Almost $200 was raised, and an outstanding 333 lbs. of food was donated to the food bank to help feed hungry families in our community. A special thank you to each of the generous sponsors who helped make this event such a special and memorable day for the children! The Pumpkin Parade The second annual Pumpkin Parade on Sunday, November 1st was a big success! Families in the community came out to participate, bringing along their Jack-O-Lanterns and donations for the food bank. Over 100 pumpkins were brought to the square this year, and there were some really great entries. Each Jack-O-Lantern was creatively designed and carved by our local families. The pumpkins were lit with candles, lighting up the square and putting on a display for everyone in the community to stop and admire.

Children started out by decorating their gift bag with Halloween stickers and drawings, and proceeded to fill their bags with goodies and handcrafted art projects. The children enjoyed exploring their creativity at the art stations. Crafts ranged from playdough sculptures, to beading bracelets, to pumpkin lanterns and painting. There was also face painting available for children!

Everyone in attendance voted on their favourite pumpkin, with nearly 150 votes in all. One lucky winner won the title of “Most Creative Pumpkin” and received a gift basket from Second Cup as a prize. Eduardo was the winner, with his “death star” pumpkin (from Star Wars).

The music and dance area drew a large crowd of energetic children who loved participating in gross motor fun. The instructors lead the dancing, and dozens of children at a time would come over and get their bodies moving to the music.

Thank you to Second Cup for donating the prize and to the City of Mississauga for collecting all the pumpkins for compost! There was a great turnout for both festivities and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves! All this is thanks to the Streetsville BIA for organizing and funding these fun-filled events each Halloween.

Family Fables – My Brave Beaver By Deanne Clipperton

Last weekend Graydon, our youngest, had his first sleepover with his Beaver group. They had been talking about it for a few weeks; he was very keen right from the start, me not so much.

he didn’t. He was one of the first ones asleep and shared his flashlight with someone. He did amazing and was playing when I arrived for pick up the next morning.

I thought that his enthusiasm would wain as the date drew closer. I did not think that he would actually stay. I think I kept telling myself that he would realize that he would be there all by himself without mom, dad or his brother and sister and decide against it.

On our way out he said, “Mom that was the best night ever!” My heartache was worth it! The first of many hurdles ahead I know, but I think I deserve the badge for 1st Sleepover, not my brave little beaver. Thank you to the amazing leaders of the 3rd Streetsville Beaver group for all of their time and dedication to so many children and their mothers! You are such an important part of the village that helps raise our children!

But his enthusiasm and excitement only continued to mount as the night approached. I kept asking, “So are you sure you want to go to the sleep over and not do something else, hang out with your friend, have movie night and sleep in the basement at home?” After little thought the answer was always “No mom. I want to go to the sleep over!” Neither of my older two ever wanted to take part in the sleep over options offered at Beavers or Sparks, and I was okay with that. I guess I just assumed that he would follow in their footsteps. I don’t know why I thought this would be the case, as he has always been one to make his own path. He had some complications in utero and had a medical procedure before he was even born and to top it off he was born three weeks early and came into this world bum first! We always joke he came out feisty saying “Kiss my ass! Look out world, here I come.” As the night approached he never wavered! I began to realize that this was something that he really wanted to do and I did not want to be the one thing standing in his way. I had to face the fact that my baby is no longer my baby but a brave, feisty, independent little boy who is his own person. I realized that we must have done something right in helping this little person be confident enough to spend the night with his new friends and if he was ready for it, I should be too. He helped pack his bag and off he went with his pillow in hand ready for an adventure. I left with the leader’s cell number just in case I needed it. I had trouble falling asleep, apparently

Why your child should have their first eye exam at 6 months of age By Dr. Marina Ceaus Did you know that the Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that your child’s first eye exam be at 6 months of age? Wondering why that is? We are not born with fully developed vision, a lot of vision is still developing after birth. Our visual acuity (how sharp we can see), our prescription, the ability for our eyes to move together, the ability for our eyes to cross and uncross, our depth perception and the connections to the brain are all still developing after birth and into our early years. Our vision continues to develop on a positive feedback system, meaning we need clear and single vision for the connections to the brain to develop properly. If one of our eyes has poor vision, or one is slightly turned in or out, our brain starts to ignore that eye. When we ignore it, we don’t receive the positive feedback to continue developing the vision in that eye. This results in poor vision in one eye, and even when corrected, the vision remains poor. This is called amblyopia, or is more commonly known as a lazy eye. Amblyopia can lead to trouble with learning, lack of depth perception, clumsiness, poor sports skills and many more problems. If your child has a high prescription both eyes won’t develop proper connections to the brain and vision can be compromised in both eyes even when corrected with glasses. Vision is so important, 80% of learning is visual and an impairment of this sort can have a significant impact on their vision. The great news is that these can easily be prevented and even reversed if caught early. The earlier it is caught, the quicker we can get the vision back up and the lower the chance of impact on learning. This is why having your child’s first eye exam at 6 months is so important. Amblyopia commonly goes un-noticed, we often see adult patients who we diagnose with amblyopia who had no idea they have it. If a child has poor vision since birth, they don’t realize what clear vision is and won’t ever complain about their poor vision. A Doctor of Optometry can provide your child with a full comprehensive eye exam. The eye examinations are modified to suit your child’s age and they include fun activities, magical books, games and of course prizes. Don’t forget, children 19 years and under are covered for one full comprehensive eye exam per year by OHIP. Each comprehensive eye exam checks your child’s vision, how their eyes are teaming together, if neurological systems are working, and the health of the eye. We recommend yearly eye exams for your little ones. For more information about this article, or if you have any questions on children’s vision or general eye care please contact me at doctor@ drceausoptometry.com. Dr. Marina Ceaus is an optometrist providing comprehensive eye examinations to patients of all ages at Queen Spectacle in Streetsville. She has significant experience with children and loves being able to turn a regular eye exam into a magical chair ride and fun games. 10 Awesome Eye Facts You Probably Never Knew

Amadio’s Pizza By Joe Leroux

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

Pizza has gained its popularity as a food that is meant to be shared among family and friends.

You’ve had your eyes since you were born, but how well do you know them? Your eyes are one of the coolest and more complex parts of your body made up of approximately 200 million working parts. Here are some awesome facts about your eyeballs:

Not long ago, a 12” Pizza was a small, which was made for 2 and a 16” was a large made for 3 or more people. That is how things were, when I started to make pizzas. The pizza that I am presenting today is called “Joe’s Lunch”, it is a combination that I’ve been making since 1974. It is definitely a pizza that is made for sharing.

1. Your eyeballs don’t grow any bigger as you age. That’s why babies seem to have such large eyes. 2. The part of the eye that you can see only makes up for 1/6 of the entire eyeball 3. If a blind person was born with sight, their dreams will include images. 4. Contrary to what you may think, eyes heal very quickly. With proper care, a corneal scratch typically heals within 48 hours. 5. Even if nobody in the family has blue or green eyes, it’s possible for the recessive gene to be expressed after many generations. People with blue eyes all share a common ancestor. 6. It is still unknown how to transplant an eyeball. The optic nerve that connects the eyeball and the brain is too complex and sensitive to reattach properly.

I started with my cold fermented dough that has been fermenting for a minimum of 32 hours. Hand stretching it, gently forming a perfect bead for the crust all around, so it will be crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Then I added my vine ripened, fresh packed crushed tomatoes with a combination of 8 secret herbs and spices, not to overpower the beautiful tomato flavour that is there.

7. Tears come in three different varieties; basal, reflex and emotional. Each is different depending on if you’re sad, happy or have something in your eye.

Next a base layer of 100 % Canadian mozzarella, followed by sliced, dry cured Canadian pepperoni, and then I placed my premium salami, which has been made by the local German butcher for over 50 years. Followed by our freshly sliced mushrooms, sweet Spanish onions and the perfect amount of green peppers. Topped with our pre-cooked, sliced Canadian bacon and a last sprinkle of award winning mozzarella. Amadio’s Pizza is located at 360 Revus Ave in Mississauga.

Christmas wish at Timothy’s Pub The holiday season is upon us and Timothy’s Pub is getting ready for their annual Christmas Wish Fundraiser.

8. 20/20 vision is not perfect, it’s just normal. This is your visual acuity. What you see at 20 feet, others see at 20 feet as well. The best recorded vision in history is actually 20/10

The date is set for Friday, December 11th and the evening will feature a gigantic silent auction, raffles, draws and entertainment by D.J. Rocky. All money raised will go towards The Salvation Army to help families in need during the Christmas season. Donations are greatly appreciated. Recently, the Salvation Army recognized pub owners, Tim and Robin Brem, at a special ceremony for their outstanding fundraising efforts.

9. When babies are born, they see images upside down. The structure of your eye initially causes it to view your surroundings as upside down. Once your brain perceives the image, it’s flipped right-side up 10. Dogs communicate with us by looking into our eyes. Studies have shown the dog perceives clues from humans by looking at their eyes. This is very similar to how babies learn to interpret cues

On January 9th, The Meteors will mark the 13th anniversary of their weekly jam. For over thirteen years, Timothy’s has been the place to be in the GTA on Saturday afternoons. The anniversary party will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 1 a.m. An incredible array of guests from the past twelve years will be performing. Do not miss this great kickoff to 2016!

For more information about this article, suggestions for future articles, or if you have questions about your family’s eye care, feel free to contact me at silvia@ queenspectacle.com.

Tim, Robin, Chanel and the staff wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. During the holiday season, Timothy’s will have special hours. A customer appreciation open house will be held on Christmas Eve from 2 - 6 p.m. The pub will be closed on Christmas Day. On Boxing Day, the Pub will be open at noon. New Year’s Eve the pub will be closed at 6 p.m. until New Year’s Day when it will reopen at noon.

Silvia Yeomans is the owner of Queen Spectacle. Queen Spectacle has locations in Port Credit, Streetsville and The Kingsway. They are a full eye care team recognized for their service excellence. For more information, visit their website at www.queenspectacle.com

Time for Holiday Honey

Michael’s Back Door A new menu, new partner and new chef provide exciting changes at Michael’s Back Door in Clarkson. Michael Morra and his son Michael Morra Junior are excited by the new changes, noting that without changes and tweaks a business can grow stale.

Aldo Lista, owner of The Old Credit Brewing Co., the historic brewery located at 6 Queen Street West in Port Credit, has been recognized with many awards for his craft beer for several years. The Pale Pilsner and Amber Ale have brought home many medals from provincial and national competitions. However, Lista’s success with Holiday Honey proves that complacency simply isn’t an ingredient in The Old Credit Brewing Company’s unique brewing procedure.

Along with a new fresh menu including gluten free selections and meat free options for vegetarians, the Morras’ introduced head chef Joe Rago, sous chef Mark D’Souza and new partner Anthony Coffa.

Brewed all year round to keep up with demand, Holiday Honey is an expensive beer to brew. Made with Billy Bee Brown Honey and winner of many awards the Honey Beer has always been Lista’s way of providing his customers with a holiday present.

Michael Morra opened the restaurant 34 years ago and states “the changes are a new fresher approach to a classic style cuisine”.

Holiday Honey was recognized as one of the best beers in Canada when it won a gold medal in the Special Honey/Maple Lager or Ale category at the Canadian Brewing Awards. Holiday Honey defeated beers from all over the nation.

Classic favourites still remain on the menu including the restaurants signature dish, Angel Hair Pasta with Lobster Bisque. Although the noodles are now a bit thicker to add more texture.

The Canadian Brewing Awards have emerged as the premiere competition for judging the quality of Canadian-brewed beer. A Canadian Brewing Awards medal is now a widely recognized symbol of brewing excellence in Canada as the competition welcomes breweries of all sizes. The Old Credit Brewing Company may be small but it makes quality products and is respected nationally for its beers. Recently Old Credit Brewing celebrated its twentieth anniversary. Next time you need a case or keg of beer, try the Old Credit Brewing Co. and treat yourself to an award-winning product made by people who care.

Michael’s Back Door has remained a landmark for business lunches and special occasions. The elegant restaurant is much larger than it appears, seating 140 people. Many celebrities have dined at the restaurant and singer Tony Bennett drops in when in town. Anthony Coffa recently joined the team after managing Rouges on Dundas Street in Mississauga for over a decade. Mark D’Souza followed Anthony and joined the kitchen as the new sous chef. Michael’s Back Door Restaurant is located in the charming village of Clarkson at 1715 Lakeshore Road West. For reservations or to book your private party, call 905-822-5751 or visit www.michaelsbackdoor.com.

The brewery is located at 6 Queen Street West in Port Credit. Call 905 271-9888 or visit www.oldcreditbrewing.com for more information.

LPs, Gifts that Keep on Giving…..

Southside Shuffle 2016

By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollection

Celebrating 18 years

With Christmas just around the corner, I’d like to offer some “sound advice”, please excuse the pun!

The Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle, Port Credit’s Annual Blues and Jazz Festival has been bringing world-class performers to the banks of the Credit River in Mississauga for 17 years. The brainchild of Juno Award winning bluesman Chuck Jackson of Downchild Blues Band, the festival has presented performances from the likes of Grammy Award winners Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Funk Brothers and many many more.

In previous articles, I have mentioned and warned people about substandard record players and audio equipment. There’s not a week that goes by without someone having issues with their new record player. These “budget” players may look nice but come with a host of problems that ruin the experience of listening to vinyl records. I can’t mention brand names for fear of a slander lawsuit so I will have to give a broad description of these products and let you read between the lines. If the player is an “all-in-one” unit with built in amp and speakers, STAY AWAY! Firstly, it is only common sense that when a speaker is “thumpin with the bass” those vibrations will not be good ones like the Beach Boys sang about! There’s a good chance (99%) that they will cause the needle to jump out of the groove. That brings me to the second point. Cheap record players usually have cheap needles. The better the needle, the deeper in the groove it rides. Cheap needles have a larger tip and “ride” in the top of the groove. Any deep bass or vibrations will cause it to skip out. The brand new 180 gram/200 gram vinyl that has been re-mastered has tons of bass so you can just imagine the difficulty the cheap needles have with new vinyl. The other thing to watch out for is the materials used. If the player is made of mostly plastic, (like toys) then chances (again 99%) are it will have problems with vinyl playback. A young customer came in this week with his player that he recently purchased. Construction was three quarters plastic and came fitted with a cheap cartridge/needle. Skipping was the issue and after examining it for a couple of seconds, I informed him of the problems. Using a stylus (needle) weight scale proved useless. It was off the scale! Normally a proper set up is in the one and a half grams range of stylus force. His was well past 3, more likely in the 5 grams range! With that much weight on the needle tip you can expect the needle to act more like a chisel shaving off bits of sound!

Preparations are already underway for our 18th annual festival and there are a few ways you can get involved. Friends of The Festival Show your support for the Southside Shuffle by becoming a Friend Of The Festival. You receive acknowledgement on the Festival website and in the official Shuffle program and help keep the Street Shuffle free!

I have been approached by distributors of these cheap record players, the profit margins are high but I refuse to mislead customers with inferior product. Shame on the stores that do carry these, I guess it’s a good way of telling what the store’s motivations are!

2016 Festival Sponsorship Position your business as a community leader with your involvement in this world-class international event. Reach tens of thousands of customers through a customized sponsorship of the Southside Shuffle and our many year-round events! We approach sponsorships as true partnerships, designed to hit the mandates of our sponsors, our audience, our vision and mission.

On the vinyl front, it has been reported that record pressing plants are running 24/7 to keep up with demand. Think about it, the record labels are hurting with downloads and streaming becoming the way that casual music fans get their tunes. Vinyl is the only physical format that is in a growth period. This season will see loads of box sets hit the shelves. Bonus features include inserts, out takes, and gimmicks like coloured vinyl to entice record shoppers. One thing to bear in mind, almost all pressings are limited editions because the record labels don’t know how many to actually produce.

Corporate Hosting Entertain groups of clients, employees, prospects and new recruits at one of the Festival’s premier VIP venues. Enjoy reserved seating at an optimal vantage point for you and your guests.

Please support local independent shops where you’ll get great service and advice for all of your holiday needs and above all, please support a local food bank and be charitable this season. Helping the less fortunate is just the right thing to do. Peace to all.

Divorce and the Matrimonial Home By Theresa Baird – Broker Keller Williams Realty Solutions 647-298-0997

In continuing with my series to showcase my highly capable and effective service provider team whom I work with, I wanted to introduce you to a very unique aspect of Mary Krauel’s business. One of the primary reasons for real estate transactions is brought about as a result of clients who are facing a divorce. I have entrusted Mary Krauel, owner of PRM Mediation and a highly skilled, empathetic divorce mediator, with my clients. They need her to guide them through one of the most difficult journeys in their lives.

Here is what some clients have said about Mary:

Mary provides ONE STOP DIVORCE MEDIATION – Mediating financial and parenting decisions instead of litigating in an adversarial legal system with divorce lawyers. Mary is Changing Conflict Into Opportunity™ with her stepby-step strategic mediation model that empowers decision makers and focuses on resolution. She brings smart financial decisions to your divorce while maximizing your net worth, putting your children first with familycentric co-parenting plans, reducing time and stress, and transitioning effectively to a new life, all in a dignified way.

“My husband and I met Mary Krauel when we were in the process of separating after a twenty-nine year marriage. Mary showed us how we could indeed deal with this difficult, emotional and life-altering situation with dignity, and negotiate with each other in good faith. For someone considering separation and/or divorce, I would highly recommend mediation. I do not believe you could find a mediator more competent, gracious and knowledgeable than Mary. She made our experience as amicable as possible and we are both very thankful and appreciative.”

Mary is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) and Certified in Conflict Resolution with over 20 years of mediation and negotiation experience. She is a sought after speaker and writer, a premium contributor to Divorce Magazine, a keynote speaker for the Institute of Divorce Financial Analysts and provides continuing education to Certified Financial Planners. But what allows Mary to really relate to my divorcing clients is her own painful experience of divorce. It was after spending 4 years in the legal system trying to reach settlement in her own divorce that caused her to believe there was a better way for couples to end their marriages and relationships. It is this motivation that drives her to help people avoid the same experience and cost, and instead focus on creating healthy new beginnings with financial security.

“No other avenue and/or person has done what Mary Krauel has done for us during our uphill battle of our divorce process. Mary helped us eliminate conflict and bitterness with each other during the parenting plan phase and helped us to focus on the main priority: our children. …. I have and will continue to recommend Mary to anyone in the same situation so they do not have to experience what I went through with a lawyer/court. THANK YOU and my children thank you too as they see a more friendly relationship between their mom and dad!” Mary says that the largest asset for most people is the matrimonial home. It is also the one that has the greatest emotional attachment. It is where the couple raised the kids. Mary explains it is also the most illiquid asset. A divorce can result in one, two or three real estate transactions if one party cannot afford to keep the matrimonial home. But how do you decide? How can you afford to keep the kids in the same school area? How does the matrimonial home impact my cash flow? What are my options? These are only a few of the many questions Mary helps my clients get answered. Mary and I would like to offer an information seminar to couples who may be facing a separation and divorce and would like to understand the options and benefits that divorce mediation can provide. We will also share some great tips and facts for folks to consider when it comes to dealing with the matrimonial home in divorces. We know it can be overwhelming.

• Full Design & Renovation Services • Wide Selection of Granite & Quartz Countertops • Architectural Millwork & Custom Cabinetry

If you, or someone you know is considering divorce or is already separated let them know about our seminar. Mary will host the seminar at her offices in Clarkson Village on January 18th, 2016 from 6pm-7pm at PRM Mediation, 1020 Johnson’s Lane, Unit A3 in Mississauga, Ontario. Space is limited so call early to register your place. You can register by calling Mary at 905267-2175 or email her at Mkrauel@prmmediation.com.

Mon - Fri: 9:00 - 5:00 Saturdays and Evenings by Appointment Only Call or Visit Our Showroom

In the meantime I invite you to visit Mary’s website at www.PRMmediation.com where she shares her philosophy on mediation and provides some helpful articles and videos to folks. I look forward to seeing you at our seminar.

Holly’s Tips Tis the season

Charles Sousa, MPP

The season of runny noses and barking coughs presents quandaries for the wellmannered but ill person.

Mississauga South

Just because you’re sick and feeling sorry for yourself does not let you off the hook when considering how your actions affect others. Of course, the best thing to do when you are sick is to stay at home, well away from the rest of humanity. If that’s just not an option, here are a few suggestions.

Happy Holidays

Let people know you’re sick. There’s nothing worse than greeting someone with a warm double-cheeked kiss, only to be told minutes later that she’s got the worst cold she’s had in years. If you’ve made social plans with friends and you feel sickly, but well enough to go out, give them a headsup. Allow others the chance to avoid you if they choose and be gracious if they decide their health is more important than this particular visit with you. This applies to your sick children as well. No hand shaking. Germs travel more effectively by a handshake than a peck on the cheek. In business situations, own up to the cold and explain that you won’t be shaking hands in order to avoid spreading the bug. Also, keep your hands off other people’s stuff during cold and flu season. This is especially true of food and drink. Most experts agree that handwashing is the single most effective practice to prevent the spread of germs.

Direct your sneezes. Try to sneeze and cough into tissues, or your sleeve. Keep tissues handy and use them! Cotton hankies may look good but they are not as sanitary as using paper tissues that are thrown away. Remember to wash your hands after smothering a sneeze or blowing your nose. Fending off a cold. Drink plenty of fluids. Eat a balanced diet that includes fruit and vegetables. Stay well rested. Wash your hands frequently. Discard tissues after each use.

The Gratifying Harvest Journal

By Gordon O. Stockman, BComm., CPA, CA, CFP, CIM Vice President – Financial Planning, Efficient Wealth Management Inc. Efficient Wealth Management has created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. We thought a column devoted to this pleasing idea would be great. Below is a repeat of a popular article previously published.

We want our clients’ money to last as long as needed to support enjoying their lives to the fullest. Spending patterns are unique to all families and will never match the timing of the portfolio performance. Your trip to China may well coincide with the year after the poorest results experienced by the portfolio. Do you delay the trip until the portfolio rebounds, or do you go and then adjust for it in the future? Will you be more active in your 50`s and 60`s or should you delay your dreams until your 80`s when the funds will be more certainly be available? The pattern of your life may well dictate that you need to use your retirement funds more in your 50`s than in your 70`s, to say support early retirement. Government benefits kick in during your 60`s. Many of our clients have a declining withdrawal plan that starts high and finish low due to this. They are active as early seniors, but less active and less travelled as they age.

Spending Is Life! In a previous Value for Money Investing, we wrote about the concept of Gamma. Gamma attempts to quantify the increase in investment returns from making “intelligent financial planning decisions” during retirement. One of the key “decisions” is having a dynamic withdrawal strategy. In simple terms, this is an adjustable plan for using the wealth represented by your investments. A common rule of thumb (and I just hate rules of thumb) is to use a withdrawal rate of 4% of the portfolio at start of retirement (a static approach). You then adjust this initial amount for inflation. A dynamic strategy would adjust based on market performance or expected investor longevity. Annually, you adjust your withdrawals to maintain portfolio survivability and changing mortality data. The above observations about using a dynamic withdrawal strategy are correct and we embrace them, but as set out, apply to research bunnies interested in dying having spent the later part of their life slaves to the different quantity of money (theoretically) available each year.

So your portfolio survivability per the mortality tables is dependent on uneven performance patterns that require adjustment to the withdrawals being made.

The Gratifying Harvest notion. Our clients are people, not research bunnies. Thus their lifestyle needs, each and every year, will drive the future resultant portfolio survivability, not the other way around. The changing mortality data is for the population as a whole and my clients, being unique, will not die on that prescribed day. In other words, we need our money to last until we are done with it, which might not be when we die. We also need to use our money both unevenly and in a pattern very different than that prescribed by the research, to enjoy our life. So, in practice, we do annually examine the portfolio performance and our client`s withdrawals to retest portfolio survivability and changing mortality requirements.

In contrast, your lifestyle needs dictate a withdrawal pattern that is unique to your family, uneven, ever changing and sometimes unforeseen. Our challenge is to assist clients in matching THEIR needs to THEIR portfolio to obtain the optimal balance between portfolio longevity, portfolio performance and enjoying life. Our clients are just like you. Middle class families, with hard earned and hard saved retirement assets, which are essential to the enjoyment of their lives each year. As an investment professional, I should be pleased to report, that in the last year their portfolio results were great and most achieved X% in their portfolios. But that is not important. The real proud moments came from their lives. We had clients visit China, cruise waterways in Russia, explore Africa, relax in the Greek Islands, and so many more places. Second homes were purchased in Florida, Mexico, and further afield. Clients moved to sunnier locales. Weddings were paid for. Children received help with home purchases. Universities were entered and left. Golf games improved. Sailboats, airplanes, RVs and fancy cars bought (no trains that I know of ). Life has been lived and FUNded.

One Dollar Transfers

Those lucky ones who have more than one property are often looking for ways of transferring some of them to the next generation at no cost and no tax consequences. Whether to children or grandchildren (or anyone else for that matter), no one wants to be hit with additional financial burden on the property that has been in the family for years. You may have heard about transfers for one dollar which allow to simply pass the title to the property to family members. You hire a lawyer, draft a transfer agreement at the nominal value, sign, receive $1 from your children and the deal is done. This works from the legal standpoint. Unfortunately, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has different view on the matter, to the chagrin of property owners. When you decide to transfer your property to any family member other than your spouse, you are considered to be selling such property at fair market value. Since most of real estate in our area will sell for more than $1, CRA will simply calculate the selling price as the difference between appraised value and that $1. The gain will be considered to be capital, therefore 50% of it will be added to your income and taxed at your marginal tax rate. If the property is held in more than one name, the capital gain will be spread between all owners proportionally. This unfortunately is not the end of the bad news. Not only the seller will be assessed capital gain on the transfer of property, but also the buyer will be left with $1 cost of the property, since the transfer document will still show the nominal value as transfer cost. When the new owner sells the property, he or she will again have to deal with substantial capital gain, resulting in double taxation. Only if such property is a principal residence to the new owner, there will be no further tax on the subsequent sale. Although you cannot avoid capital gain on the transfer, you can at least eliminate double taxation of your children or grandchildren. If you consider transfer of your property to be a gift of love, then your children will have a new cost of the property, as per assessed value on the transfer. Eventually, when the new owner sells that property (assuming not a principal residence), he or she will only pay the tax on the difference between the selling price and the cost of transfer, on which you as a parent or grandparent already paid tax. The other solution is to leave the property in your name and eventually have it taxed in the estate. However, since at death all assets are considered to be sold at fair market value, you may end up paying tax at a higher rate. This of course will depend on the value of your estate and type of assets you have.
