Engage in Streetsville and Port Credit this Holiday Season

(905)

By: Lindsay Howe

103 Lakeshore Rd. East, Port Credit ON L5G 1E2

The Ambiance of the Villages Residents and merchants of Streetsville and Port Credit are blessed to be a part of such beautiful and inviting villages. During these busy months of the year we look forward to the arrival of the holidays because it gives us an opportunity to relax, reflect and spend quality time with our loved ones. A leisurely stroll through the village is a revitalizing experience, particularly in the crisp winter weather, amidst the streets glistening with snow. Walking down the street along Lakeshore or Queen Street, you cannot help but admire the twinkling Christmas lights and the beautifully decorated store windows, and verandas. The experience fills you with the joyful spirit of the season.

Located along the village streets are over 700 businesses for your convenience. From fashion boutiques, to pubs and bars, to coffee houses and bakeries, the villages have everything you are looking for. With every shop, restaurant and service available in the immediate vicinity, why not try to embrace everything your village has to offer? Resident of Port Credit, Charlene De Silva expresses her high regard for the village: “Port Credit has always felt like home to me, even before I resided here. I remember telling my father, as a child, that one day I would buy the lighthouse and move in. Though I have yet to do so, I have been fortunate enough to share Port Credit’s charm with so many friends and family. It’s one of the few places left where you can find the true boutique family run stores and an eclectic variety of restaurants and bars with something for everyone, both young and old. With events like Buskerfest and the Waterfront Festival - Port Credit is a buzz in the summers and yet somehow manages to hold on to its inviting warmth even through the cold winters. Port Credit has always been my guiding light and I will always be proud to call it home.”

Changing the face of men’s health!

Toby Gardiner | Publisher toby@rjentertainmentpublishing.com

It was Movember! Movember was dedicated to growing moustaches and raising awareness and funds for men’s health. My friends and I joined the movement and grew mustaches for the cause for the month of November. We generated laughs and lots of jokes. Kidding aside, raising awareness of men’s health issues is very important. I ask all men to please follow these few simple, yet crucial rules: HAVE AN ANNUAL PHYSICAL. Find a doctor and make a yearly appointment each Movember for a general health check. Getting annual check-ups, preventative screening tests, and immunizations are among the most important things you can do to stay healthy. DON’T SMOKE! If you do smoke, stop! Compared to non-smokers, men who smoke are about 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Smoking is responsible for about 90% of deaths for men due to lung cancer.

BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE. If you are not already doing some form of exercise, start small and work up to a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. Set realistic goals and push yourself to stay active on a consistent basis. EAT A HEART HEALTHY DIET. Fill up with fruits, vegetables, whole grains; include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and eat foods that are low in saturated fats, trans-fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars. STAY AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Balance calories from foods and beverages with calories you burn off by physical activities. It is better to eat small meals throughout the day rather than a couple large portioned meals, which will leave you hungrier between mealtimes and more likely to binge eat. MANAGE YOUR STRESS. Chill out! Stress, particularly long-term stress, can be the factor in the onset or worsening of poor health. Managing your stress is essential to your health & well being and should be practiced daily. Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.

Councillor George Carlson, Ward 11 update At this special time of year, we find ourselves quite busy preparing for the holiday season by decorating our homes, buying presents for friends and family, and making plans to spend quality time with loved ones. We also find ourselves thinking, “How can I help those who are less fortunate?” and we might not know where to start looking for worthwhile charitable causes to support.

• Crackers • Cold Cereal • Canned Kids Pasta • Canned Vegetables • Cookies • Beans in Tomato Sauce • Salmon • Pasta Sauce

Our local food banks also find themselves very busy at this time of year gearing up for holiday food drives and working very hard to ensure that those who are underprivileged are able to enjoy a nice holiday meal with their families and have enough food to get through the cold winter months. Approximately 17% of Mississauga residents (121,000 people) live in poverty and need assistance from food banks. A great way to help those less fortunate this holiday season is to give generously to our local food banks, through donating funds or by simply picking up some much-needed items and dropping them off at the food bank. Here are some ways you can help our local food banks, the Eden Community Food Bank and the Mississauga Food Bank, along with a list of currently needed items that you can donate:

• Rice • Side Dishes • Baking Items – Muffin Mixes, Cake Mixes • Miscellaneous Items – ketchup, mustard, salad dressing, salsa, BBQ sauce • Juice (large cans or bottles) • Shampoo, Conditioner, Deodorant, Body Wash, Toothpaste You can also make a financial donation to the ECFB by visiting www.edenfoodbank.org/help or mail a cheque to The Eden Community Food Bank, 2-3185 Unity Drive, Mississauga, ON L5L 4L5. Mississauga Food Bank The Mississauga Food Bank (MFB) is the largest food distribution program in Mississauga, supporting over 38,000 clients each month, including the city’s seven neighbourhood food banks. The MFB distributes millions of pounds of food through its extensive network of recipient food banks, meal programs, shelters, addiction centres, and breakfast programs. The MFB accepts donations of non-perishable food items. If you are organizing a food drive, the MFB can supply you with barrels to collect food and coordinate food pick-up; each barrel will hold approximately 300 lbs of food. The MFB’s most needed items are:

Eden Community Food Bank The Eden Community Food Bank (ECFB) is a non-denominational food bank that assists individuals and families living in Mississauga. The ECFB provides healthy, balanced food choices that meet cultural and dietary requirements. The ECFB also provides basic need items, like personal care and hygiene products. Food and item donations may be dropped off at the ECFB’s Battleford center (Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm), which is located at 3051 Battleford Road. When you are grocery shopping for your family, consider purchasing an extra bag of items to help someone in need. Current items needed include:

• Canned/dried beans (pork and beans, kidney, chickpeas, etc.) • Canned fish or meat (tuna, salmon, corned beef, etc.) • Canned fruit or vegetables • Boxed macaroni and cheese • Peanut Butter • Soups/Stew (chunky stew, Nourish, etc.) Donations can also be dropped off at the Mississauga Food Bank warehouse, which is located at 36-2550 Goldenridge Road (Monday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm or Friday, 9am to 12pm) or alternatively dropped off to any Mississauga Fire Hall. Visit www.mississaugafooddrive.org for a list of drop-off locations. If you would like to make a monetary donation to the Mississauga Food Bank, please visit www.themississaugafoodbank.org/donatefunds. You can also donate by phone by calling 905-270-5589 or send a cheque to The Mississauga Food Bank 36-2550 Goldenridge Road, Mississauga, ON L4X 2S3. I would also like to take this opportunity to cordially invite you and your family to my 2013 New Year’s Day Open House & Skate Party (hosted with MPP Bob Delaney and MP Brad Butt) at the Vic Johnston Community Centre (lobby & arena), 335 Church Street, on January 1, 2013, from Noon-2pm. Bring your ice skates and enjoy free ice skating at the Vic Johnston rink. There will be lots of great prizes, free skating, and fun for the whole family! Please bring a small donation and/or non-perishable food items for the local food banks. Food donation bins will be set up at the Vic Johnston CC lobby beginning December 10, 2012 until January 1, 2013 and all food collected will be donated to the Eden Community Food Bank immediately after our skate party. I hope to see you there and look forward to celebrating with you and your family on January 1st! For more information about this special community event, please call my office at 905-896-5011. Also, please be advised that City of Mississauga offices will be closed at noon on Monday, December 24, 2012 to Tuesday, January 1, 2013 (inclusive) and will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Taste of Port Credit Passport Contest Winners

Turtle Creek Books is moving! By Denise Choppin

After serving Port Credit for over a decade, the time has finally come for Turtle Creek Books to move on.

Congratulations to the 2012 Taste of Port Credit Passport Contest winners Sherri Coutts (second from left at top) and Terra Rizzuto (far right)! John Bozzo and Howard Klein (center photo), organizers of Canada Day celebrations in Port Credit, were on hand to present Sherri and Terra and their families with gift certificates totaling $1000. The presentation took place at The Great Canadian Pizza Co. in Port Credit. “Our new favorite pizza joint, discovered thanks to the Taste of Port Credit” says Sherri. Great Canadian Pizza Co. Owner, John is holding the oh-so-yummy pizza.

There have been many changes over these last 10 years, and the book business has been greatly affected. The internet, e-readers, online libraries and more have changed the traditional book world in dramatic ways. Additionally the heart of Port Credit is growing exponentially and much of the area is now shifting towards dining and restaurants - in fact our old space will be taken over by the restaurant folks currently on either side of us!

In true Taste of Port Credit spirit, both Terra and Sherri choose to spend their shopping spree dollars at local Port Credit restaurants. Thank you ladies!

In the meanwhile, we still maintain and will continue to have office space in the same building at 36 Lakeshore Road. It will not be the same “casual - come on in and browse anytime” retail operation it has been in the past, but you will continue to be able to browse our complete inventory online at our usual website (www.turtlecreekbooks.ca) we can be contacted by phone or email anytime. We will also be happy to meet with you in our offices to either offer you a “private” book visit or to have us assess any books you want appraised or repaired - in essence, business as usual! We are currently seeking an alternative retail location in the area, but need to find just the right one - like Goldilocks - not too big, not too small, but just right! We will still be operating at the usual location and maintaining usual hours until we close on December 31st 2012. The good news for you - the book lover - is that our inventory will be HUGELY DISCOUNTED as we would much rather you took a lovely book home, rather than us packing and moving it. Look for the “5 books for $2.00” section- it’s growing daily as we “sacrifice” more volumes to this area. Finally, a big thank you to all who have visited our Lakeshore location over the years and now we look forward to this, our new chapter, in serving the readers of Port Credit and elsewhere. Merchants lead way in giving Business community rallies around ‘Bite’

Full Circle touches down March 28

While many are gearing up for the holiday season, organizers of Full Circle are already wrapping up plans to provide another summer of fun.

Mississauga’s business community has wrapped its generous arms around a little fundraising event that has proven it can take a big bite out of hunger.

Brenda Molson, who, along with Denise Drysdale co-chairs Full Circle, a benefit in support of the Mississauga Waterfront Festival (MWF), says plans for the 10th annual fundraising Full Circle dinner are well underway. “Full Circle is a terrific opportunity to raise awareness of the need in our community,” said Molson, adding that the event, “also provides an opportunity to listen to the inspiring words of speakers who have overcome overwhelming challenges in their own lives.” In celebration of Full Circle’s 10th anniversary, organizers have made a break from the traditional female-oriented speakers’ list in honour of motivational speaker and all-round nice guy, Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons.

‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas, a fundraising dinner that, in only three years, has evolved into a six-week campaign of contributing money makers, raises money to help ease the pangs of hunger for Mississauga’s neediest families through its support of local food banks.

Clemons, whose dazzling smile is as renowned as his motivational speeches and play on the field, is the celebrated former Grey Cup-winning player, coach, vice-chairman and president of the Toronto Argonauts football club and one of Canadian sports’ most recognizable faces.

“’Twas the Bite Before Christmas is a bit of a phenomenon,” says Dan Meadowcroft, founder of the campaign. “The community has opened its arms and its wallets to help support our quest to ease hunger in our city. We seldom have to ask anyone for support; we just tell them our story and they all want to contribute.”

“We’re so happy to have such an accomplished, motivational athlete as Pinball Clemons participating in Full Circle,” said Molson. “He sets the kind of example we’re all trying to establish for the young people in our community.”

Trinity Development Group Inc., which is currently transforming its Lakeshore Rd. holdings into a vibrant, mixed-use community that will offer employment, shopping and housing in one micro-neighbourhood, is one business that has thrown its support behind the ‘Bite’ this year.

Full Circle operates as a fundraising venue for the Mississauga Waterfront Festival (MWF) which helps provide three days of complimentary rides, entertainment and snacks for disadvantaged Mississauga youths and their families.

“This event truly captures the spirit of giving and helps bind together a community so rich in diversity,” says Ingrid Beausoleil, Director of Development for Trinity. “We applaud all those who participate in this wonderful event for their open hearts, compassion and generosity.”

“We’re very proud that we’ve been able to provide so many children and teens, more than 35,000 of them, with an opportunity to enjoy a few days of carefree summer fun,” said Molson. “For some of the young people we support, the Mississauga Waterfront Festival is their only recreational event of the summer, sort of like a mini vacation.” “Full Circle is a great opportunity to bring together likeminded women and men from our community to help ensure the children in greatest need in our communities can enjoy all that is offered at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival.”

For Mississauga-based Compass Group Canada, the country’s leading food services company, feeding the hungry takes on special meaning. “Giving back to the community where we live and work is a guiding principle at Compass Group Canada and we are thrilled to once again lend our support to the (Mississauga food banks and the) ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas campaign” says Saajid Khan, Compass chief executive officer.

Ward 5 Councillor Bonnie Crombie, in her first term at City Hall, will emcee the 10th anniversary Full Circle event taking place Thursday, March 28, 2013. The dinner will be held at Le Treport Banquet Hall, 1075 The Queensway East. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

“We know that the funds raised will go a long way to supporting families in need, since we truly believe that no family should ever go without during the holidays or any time of year.”

Tickets cost $125 per person or $1,150 for a table of 10, To purchase tickets or for more information, contact the MWF offices at 905-891-0002.

Port Credit Business Association (PCBIA) general manager Ellen Timms, a strong advocate and supporter of the ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas campaign, has rallied the business collective’s membership to help support the fundraising campaign, distributing shopping bags donated by Planet Organic to PCBIA members to be filled with non-perishable items. In addition, more than 30 food donation bins have been installed throughout Port Credit stores and restaurants. “The Port Credit BIA is pleased to be part of this great cause and has challenged every one of our 400 members to contribute cash or food,” says Ellen Timms. “This time of year, no one should go without and we intend to make sure they don’t.” Roc ‘n’ Docs, located at 105 Lakeshore Rd. E., officially kicked off the fundraising campaign with a launch party December 2. La Villa Fine Foods & Bakery, located at 3318 Lakeshore Rd. E., will dish out a hearty breakfast December 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for only $5 per person, while those with a healthy appetite for helping their neediest neighbours can grab A Bite at the Brogue (Inn), located at 136 Lakeshore Rd. E., on December 19.

2nd Annual Diaper Drive - The Result By Lydia Ordóñez-Niles

From October 1st-15th, Impressionable Gifts and Decor organized the 2nd Annual Diaper Drive. Thanks to the many wonderful donors, it was a great success! We all made a positive dent for a much needed cause. A huge thank you to all - we really did help cover the needs of our community’s littlest ones! There were 48 packs of diapers, $550 cash donations and 9 packs of baby wipes donated. With the cash donations, I was able to purchase 61 packages of diapers (smart shopping) for a grand total of 109 packages. Once collected, the diapers were evenly distributed between the three non-profit organizations, which were very appreciative for this much needed item. The non-profit organizations were The Mississauga Life Centre, The Compass and Interim Place.

Christmas Lights at the Lighthouse A great big Port Credit thank you goes out to Danny Diamantakos of Peel Chrysler Fiat located at 212 Lakeshore Road West. Danny donated the money to decorate and light up the Port Credit Lighthouse for the holiday season!!

Congratulations to Lola Mentrup for winning the draw prize. For every package of diapers that were donated, the donor was given an in store ballot for a prize draw. In this photo, you see legendary musician Chuck Jackson drawing the winning ballot.

The bakery around the corner By Melissa Motyka

From the warm cookies, sandwiches and customer service, to Grandma Doris’ memorable butter tarts, it is hard to believe Kate’s Town Talk Bakery is still a new addition to the Streetsville community.

SMALL FOCUS BUSINESS

For someone who finds refuge in the quiet and methodical process of baking, the dream of opening a bakery may be undeniable, however for Kate Clipperton the idea was not obvious until the opportunity presented itself two and a half years ago. With deep family roots in Streetsville and a strong sense of attachment to the area, Kate bought the bakery at what she describes the “right time, right place.” Originally from a business background, Kate knew pursuing the bakery would be a daring move, yet took confidence in her decision while realizing the support she had behind her. “Streetsville is a great community for supporting local businesses,” says Kate, an advocate for returning the support to neighbouring professions. “[It] tends to support its own.” While the bakery has stood on the corner of Queen and Pearl St. for years, multiple owners adding to its history, Kate has created something comfortable within the four walls of the shop. Baking all goods on-site daily to ensure consistently fresh products- whether scones or chocolate chip cookies- the bakery provides customers and residents of Streetsville with a comforting atmosphere and sense of solidarity. Using her Grandma Doris’ butter tart recipe, along with recipes collected over time and with the help of her staff and full-time baker, Daimaine, the owner uses simple and satisfying baked goods to guarantee her customers are content. The dependability of Kate’s products, along with their unquestionable quality, establishes a bakery that not only delivers a delicious product, but is also devoted to the public. “I want people to come in and feel like they’re eating something from their mom’s kitchen, or their grandma’s kitchen,” comments Kate, describing the commitment she maintains to her bakery and customers every day. Aside from the baking aspect of the shop, Kate maintains a lunch menu (complete with sandwiches on bread baked fresh every morning) and a catering option for those wishing to enjoy the bakery’s goods on the go. Along with seasonal favourites- Hot Cross buns at Easter, Cookie goodie trays, Mince Tarts and Tourtiere at Christmas- it is no wonder the Streetsville based bakery has become an asset to the community. Whether it is the comforting scent of freshly baked cookies as soon as you walk through the door, or the friendly smile you are greeted with, Kate’s Town Talk Bakery makes you feel right at home.

Santa Claus Rides into Town The Annual Mississauga Santa Claus Parade By:Lindsay Howe

Friends and families gathered along Queen Street on a cold and frosty Sunday afternoon for the 35th Annual Mississauga Santa Claus Parade. The parade kicked off the holiday season on November 25th in the village of Streetsville. Festive floats rolled in with parade members, marching down Queen Street South to Old Station Road.

Some of the children’s favourite characters showed up including Franklin and Disney Princesses. The Wizard of Oz gang returned, accompanied by their ‘over the rainbow’ show-stopping float. Wandering snowmen, gingerbread men, upside down clowns and elves strolled the streets, sharing goodies and gifts with children as they passed.

The parade was truly spectacular, with so many new and vibrant floats this year, there was never a dull moment. New floats from the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors, gave everyone a sneak peek inside both teams’ dressing rooms. Santa’s Mail Depot returned to collect the excited children’s wish lists, to be delivered to Santa’s workshop in time for Christmas.

To the delight of everyone in attendance, furry friends on all fours returned to the parade again this year. Santa’s reindeers flew in, and trotted though the village, spreading a little Christmas magic to everyone they passed. The brave and heroic St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs also made their way down Queen Street, dressed in festive red clothing. Lastly beautiful horses dressed in bells pulled buggies gracefully through the village.

Santa’s favourite bakery, Kate’s Town Talk Bakery had an eye-catching float, including a grand festive cake, and little chefs, gathered around a Christmas tree. The Mississauga Food Bank outdid themselves this year with a ginormous grocery cart filled with food, reminding everyone about the importance of giving; the necessity of donating food items to the food bank. Perhaps the most popular and unique float this year was the Tim Hortons float, featuring a giant chocolate Timbit riding a sled, pulling a gingerbread-donut covered house!

The children waited in anticipation for the parade finale, the arrival of the guests of honour: Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their eight reindeer. Mr. and Mrs. Claus greeted the eager children, all smiles, waving and spreading Christmas cheer to everyone they passed. The parade was a huge success! Lots of memorable moments were shared. The creative floats and jolly characters truly raised our holiday spirits. Thanks to all the sponsors and everyone who came out and supported the Mississauga Santa Claus Parade!

More marching bands participated than ever; a total of fifteen bands marched down Queen Street, filling the air with harmonious sounds. The Streetsville Pipes & Drums, the Community Living Hamilton Drum Corps, Burlington Teen Tour Band and the Mississauga Top Hat Marching Orchestra returned again this year to fill the streets with their Christmas melodies. To the astonishment of those watching, talented entertainers and buskers roamed Queen Street, performing magic tricks and circus acts. Other crazy characters include: men in costumes riding unicycles, zany magicians, and penguins roaming the streets. Baton twirlers, dancers, and candy cane gymnasts doings flips and cartwheels showcased their talents for all to see.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland The Streetsville Tree Lighting Celebration By Lindsay Howe

On Friday, November 23th, the community gathered around the Streetsville cenotaph at Main Street Square for the annual Tree Lighting Celebration. It was a cold, crisp wintery night; the perfect weather to ring in the winter season.

Gingerbread men were scattered around Main Street Square, hand delivering candy canes to everyone in attendance. In the background, beautiful Christmas carols could be heard. The streets were filled with the harmonious voices of the GiGi Sisters, performing everyone’s favourite holiday tunes.

This year, the Streetsville BIA started a new tradition at the Tree Lighting Celebration. Instead of lighting up one large tree at Streetsville Main Street Square, six breathtaking evergreens were unveiled. Lit up in vibrant blue lights, the half dozen Christmas trees are a remarkable sight. Everyone encircled around to clap, cheer and celebrate the commencement of Christmas.

Special thanks to the Streetsville BIA for putting on this wonderful annual Christmas event! Happy holidays everyone!

Walking through the cluster of trees, you feel like you are walking through a winter wonderland. Streetsville is so beautiful this time of year, with the Christmas streetscape, the beautifully lit shop windows and verandas. Now with the addition of several Christmas trees, you can’t help but feel the enchanting spirit of Christmas all around you. The most popular guest of the evening, jolly old St. Nick, arrived in Streetsville, straight from the North Pole. He brought along with him the lovely Mrs. Claus, and a couple elves. This year, the children had the opportunity to take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus together. Excited children lined up with their parents, waiting anxiously for their opportunity to sit on Santa’s knee and reveal their Christmas wishes to him. Parents took this opportunity to snap an unforgettable Christmas photo, as a keepsake of this occasion. The horse and wagon ride was a main attraction again this year at the Tree Lighting Celebration. Families had the opportunity to gallop down Queen Street on a horse drawn wagon, waving to everyone they pass, spreading Christmas cheer. This scenic route through Streetsville this time of year is a momentous event, one families did not want to miss out on.

Keeping it Real By Ric Cooper

It’s that time of year again, joyous for some and difficult for others. Please don’t be fooled by unscrupulous businesses selling knock off or counterfeit goods. This time of year tends to bring out the greed in some of these businesses taking advantage of our urgency to find the perfect gift. Anyone who really knows me, knows that I can’t stand fakes. I’ve never had a fake Christmas tree nor will I ever. If it’s not real, then I don’t want it. I understand that there are some circumstances where that is the only option. I saw an ad last week for a fake palm tree with lights strung on it! Give me a break, really, you’ve got to kidding. “Designer” clothes, purses and accessories seem to be everywhere. Even at the local convenience store! I just don’t get it, why would you want a knock off? It’s probably made by poorly paid “slave” like employees in horrendous working conditions. Recently a dear friend offered me a DVD of a movie I had expressed interest in. It cost her 2 bucks. The disc was obviously a counterfeit and I said “no thanks”, I just wouldn’t watch it. The money from that disc gets funneled to organized crime gangs which in turn creates more societal problems when those gangs become responsible for the illicit drug trade. The above are just a few examples of the fakes out there. Last week, the American Music Awards was on the telly. Talk about fake, all of the acts were lip-synched and the dance moves were more important than lyrics or playing an instrument. While these artists (I use that term lightly) may be at the top of the charts, I’ll bet that within two years many of them completely forgotten. It is refreshing to see that the largest selling artist of the last two years, Adele, is totally real, building a career based on her incredible voice. Mumford and Sons are another band that are keeping it real. New music by established artists are always a safe bet for reality. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Donald Fagen and the list goes on. Many of these albums are truly great but at least they have one thing in common; real music by real people. Here’s a suggestion for you to keep it real this holiday season. Go to a grocery store and buy a bag full of non-perishable food that YOU would actually eat. You can drop off donations at my store or a few others throughout the village. Make a cash donation to the Salvation Army. They need it desperately due the heartless actions of some people who stole over $2 million worth of toys and money. Help someone if they are in need, say hello to a complete stranger, wish them well. To quote a partial lyric by one of my favourite bands, Jethro Tull, “remember, Christmas spirit is not what you drink”. Wishing all of my readers health, peace and prosperity.

Streetsville 2013 Ceilidh News!

After two successful years of raising funds for the ‘Kids in the Community’ of Streetsville, Ceilidh Chairperson Todd Ladner has announced the election of his successor, Julie Walker, to the 2013 Chair, on behalf of the executive committee. ‘Ceilidh’ (pronounced Kay-lee) is a Gaelic term, and refers to a get together featuring music, food and drink. Ladner says the idea for the Streetsville event was hatched soon after the Streetsville Hockey League came under the management of the Vic Johnston Community Centre Board of Directors. As Marketing and Fundraising Chair for the Vic, he inherited a golf tournament used to raise funds for the hockey league. With the help of fellow VJCC Directors Ken Hunter, Todd Smith and Toby Gardiner, and a little imagination during a breakfast meeting in the Village in September 2010, the golf tournament morphed into a Community wide fundraiser that enlisted Streetsville Legion Branch 139, Streetsville Rotary and Streetsville Lions as full partners … a Streetsville first! 2012 Ceilidh Chair Todd Ladner presenting cheque to Scott Brubacher - Streetsville Rotary

Profits are split evenly amongst the lead group participants and have been used to support the Legion Cadets, Easter Seals Kids and bursaries for the under privileged. The VJCC Board is hopeful it can eventually provide post-secondary scholarships for SHL players with Ceilidh funding. The Ceilidh is all about the Kids in the Community!

Remembrance Day, 2012 By J.Knox

On November 11th, the Col. Alex Thomson Royal Canadian Legion Branch #82 led an impressive March of decorated Veterans from the Port Credit Legion on Front St. to attend the Service of Remembrance at the Trinity Anglican Church on Stavebank Road, followed by the laying of the wreaths at the Cenotaph. Marion Moorewood, Port Credit BIA Chair, who attended the mornings ceremony commented on what was one of the largest community gatherings at the Cenotaph in recent years, “I was overwhelmed by the number of people who came to the Remembrance Day Ceremony and the level of respect that was given to our Veterans and hero’s” said Marion. During a poignant ceremony at the Cenotaph, a moments silence was observed and the wreaths were laid by Veterans, Service Men and Women and Dignitaries. After the ceremony the March of valor made its way back to the Legion. Along the March route, the community continued to gather in remembrance and to honor those who died for us in the line of duty.

Holiday Honey is now available all year round!

Christmas Decoration Ideas for your mantel By Jackie Connolly Interior decorator at Parsons Interiors

Initially only brewed in the winter, but due to demand, Old Credit Holiday Honey is now available all year round.

This winter season, the power of silver is in, and that’s a great thing because we all want to make our home stunning for Christmas. The fire place is where we hang our stocking for Santa to stock our presents. The fire place should be the main focal points in the room at Christmas time. One marvellous look this year is decorating with Christmas balls which add lots of drama and sparkle, and it’s so easy and inexpensive.

Made with pure Billy Bee honey and winner of a Bronze Canadian Award and a Silver Ontario Award, this Honey Beer has always been owner Aldo Lista’s way of providing his customers with a holiday present. Since receiving many brewery awards, resting on his laurels is a foreign concept to Lista, who has perfected Holiday Honey as he does with every beer.

A great way to start would be to go beyond the green and red palette you see everywhere each year. To do this, consider arranging a delightful fairy tale look with some white and silver Christmas ornaments, and some silver pine cones in glass vases of varying heights. This kind of look brings out the cheerful and fresh new look you will see this Christmas season. In addition to the glass vases, put down a chic mirrored Christmas tree and some reindeer with same designs from the Christmas tree accessories. Keep in mind that colours and patterns should always have a relationship with something else in the room. In this case, it’s our mantel!

The Old Credit Brewing Co. is a special place as the family atmosphere is draped all over the walls. Next time you need a case or keg of beer, try the Old Credit Brewing Co. and treat yourself to an awardwinning product made by people who care.

For a second addition to your mantel, add some white candle holders. They are so classic looking with cream-coloured round candles of different heights. When they are lit, you will create an inviting, warm pleasurable feel in your home. Lastly, place two metal silver urns on either side of the fire place. I have decorated them with the same colour palette that I used on the mantel: silvers and whites. I have topped off the look by using sparkly sequined decorative balls and little birds on my silver glittery twigs.

Also available for the holiday season, the Ontario Craft Brewers have created a special holiday pack with six assorted bottles. The Old Credit Pilsner is featured in this special package. These discovery packs are only available at your local LCBO. Holiday Honey is available at both the brewery and the LCBO in a larger bottle format.

Do you see what I see…?

Family Fables – Village Angels

by Silvia Yeomans, Kingsway Opticians and Queen Spectacle

By Deanne Clipperton

As a mom and an Optician, I find myself more and more passionate about the importance of eye exams for children.

Recently I completed six weeks of radiation treatment for a meningioma, a non-malignant brain tumour. This was not a journey that I completed alone, nor would I have been able to. My family and I were taken care of by countless angels.

I have two children, Alistair and Anni, who are 6 and 4 years old. One of my best memories was when Alistair started learning his ‘blended sounds’ and then worked his way to 3 and 4 letter words, and now he’s comfortably reading chapter books. Anni has gone from doing her blended sounds, and is now reading 3 and 4 letter words. My husband and I are so proud of their reading levels (especially since I’ve never been an avid reader).

After having children I often heard the phrase “It takes a village” from other mothers, referring to the importance of the constant support they received from those around them to help raise their family. I have been taken care of by the villagers before, when my children were born or if my family had the flu, but I had not experienced it to the extent that I have over the last few months.

Some parents are having difficulty understanding why their children are behaving the way they are or not learning at the same speed as the other children in their class. We have a growing problem in society; it’s a lack of binocular vision. What does that mean? Your child’s two eyes might not be working together. It’s more common than you think! Did you know that 1 in 10 of us have binocular vision problems? That’s amblyopia (a.k.a. “lazy eye”), strabismus (a.k.a. “crosseyed”), accommodative anomalies, vergence anomalies and prism correction are ALL more common than the other major eye diseases combined! They are more common than glaucoma and cataracts!

My treatments began on September 10th and friends and family signed up to drive me to my daily appointments at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre and keep me company for the next 30 days. Delicious dinners for my family arrived daily until November 14th, along with snacks for my children’s lunches and baked goods. All of this arranged by a fellow hockey mom and friend who created a computerized schedule and reminders for all the angels who signed up to take care of us. She heard about my upcoming journey and sent an email to fellow hockey parents from our sons’ team, other long-time friends and family who wanted to help out and do something tangible. The result was enough meals to take care of us for two and a half months.

Children are having problems reading and writing and having a short attention span, because they might not be seeing print or objects properly. Some parents are having behavioural challenges with their children and it might easily be resolved with a routine eye exam. Some of the symptoms of ADHD are IDENTICAL to convergence inabilities. Can you imagine? Some of the children diagnosed with ADHD have binocular vision problems and need vision therapy or just a pair of eyeglasses (and not medication). Unfortunately some paediatricians and psychologists know very little or nothing about binocular vision. Is this why I never really enjoyed reading? Could it be because I didn’t start wearing eyeglasses on time?

On top of meals, rides and good company, I had villagers sending me daily texts, dropping of flowers, writing thoughtful notes, performing thoughtful acts, calls to check on us and offer encouragement, picking up my children from school and helping out with the kids. There were also villagers who would offer a comforting hug or a warm cup of tea and easy conversation. I don’t know how my family got so lucky to be taken care of by so many village angels. And that is what they are! These people took time from their busy lives to help us. They were families with young busy children and families of their own to look after. People not feeling 100% themselves or with sick kids or families with 1,2,3,4 or 5 kids with several activities, took time think of us and to prepare dinner for us. Many of them did so more than once or even twice. I think that this village that we call home is a special place full of angels that will surprise you every day.

As a mom, I highly recommend ALL children have eye exams annually. Children should have the same equal rights to learn with the same ease as their classmates especially since 80% of the information processed is done through their eyes. For that reason, they should start getting their eyes tested at 6 months of age. There are many components of an eye exam done by the Optometrist. Included in the eye exam, the Optometrist looks at whether or not there’s a need for a prescription, general health of the eye (front and behind) and muscle movement. It’s that muscle movement that shows them if the eyes are moving together in harmony. That movement allows the eyes to focus on objects together.

There are not enough words or acts of kindness to let our angels know how much they mean to us and how blessed we are to know them and have them in our lives. Thank you village angels! You know who you are.

You can talk to your child’s teacher, or make your own observations. But better yet, book an eye exam and speak to your Optometrist … take care of their eyes! Happy holidays to you and your family!

I hope our village angels will inspire you to help us pay it forward this holiday season. Merry Christmas and may the joy of the season fill your home and your hearts with love. Deanne, Todd, Nolan, Mckenzie and Graydon

Value For Money Investing

Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hardearned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. Costs do matter!

and when you can get it. Investments will have an unknown value at all future dates and accessibility may not be desirable given past results. Investments, by their nature, have practical limitations on their liquidity and accessibility. As an investment professional, one of the biggest problems that I see is families with no cash reserves. Life has a way of getting in the way of even the best laid plans and emergencies do happen. Loss of a job, an illness, a home repair or a car accident are among the most common. You need savings to meet these surprises. You often need the cash now. Savings are for those NOW times. You also may have definitive plans to buy a house, buy a car, build a cottage or take a long trip. For these events you will need cash at the right time. You need savings for their liquidity and availability.

Save yourself! I recently met with a young lady that had come to us for a Financial Plan. As it turns out, she is a terrific saver and saves about half of her after tax income each year. Quite impressive really! Now clearly, I could be no assistance in her becoming a better saver. She also has a very good handle on where she spends her money. A key ingredient in developing a good financial plan. Being a long way away from retirement and uncertain about how long she wants to work, she clearly was not here to plan her impending exit from her employer. What did she really need? She said, some help in determining how to invest her savings.

Being an Investor means that you are in it for the long term. If you have bought RSPs, you are an Investor. If you bought RESP for the kids, you are an Investor. If you own mutual funds, stocks or bonds, you are an Investor. If you need those funds NOW, you are a poorer Investor most of the time. Investments usually have very uncertain returns over a short time span, but are much more reliable over the long term. Lack of savings will cause you to often make withdrawals from your RSPs, stop the kids’ scholarship plans or sell those mutual funds on the worst possible day. Believe me, the lack of savings will make you a terribly unsuccessful Investor most of the time.

Invest her savings. What a great statement! Both, a common phrase and a common use of terms. That was when I pointed out to her, that it is a confusing use of terms. Why? Once savings become investments, they are no longer savings. Once you have investments, you no longer have savings. Was she asking to make more return on her savings or was she asking to convert her savings to investments?

Nurture your wealth

So, how did we help? We insisted on a definitive description of the future use for all of the accumulated savings. We wanted the young lady to be clear and committed to the time horizons associated with the funds. We helped determine what portion of the savings MUST remain as savings. We then helped determine what portion of the savings would remain untouched until retirement. This clearly is long enough to convert savings to investments, since liquidity and accessibility needs are a long way off. In between the two, we have a third area which is a bit grey, due to the stage of her life. Kids in her future, maybe, but a husband first would be good. Both, expensive items. A house, but when? Next year? Five years? Who knows? Our goal is to shrink the middle grey area to as small as possible, as soon as possible. Funds in this area are problematic. With savings, we must seek predictable outcomes, liquidity and accessibility, which we know will restrict possible returns. The long horizon funds may be safely invested to seek market returns from both the equity and bond markets. The grey area funds are where we are likely to make a wrong choice. Go long, and then move up the house purchase. Go for liquidity, and then not buy a house for five years, wrongly foregoing higher possible returns.

Sleep well every night

One common mistake, we are currently seeing with prospects, is the unbridled seeking of higher returns on savings. With interest rates so low, savers are becoming unintended investors overnight, as they forgo savings products and move into bonds or equities to enhance yields, forgetting that their savings were meant to provide liquidity and accessibility, not just yield.

I was reminded of a basic tenet of investing: always have savings before making investments. The fastest way to becoming a bad investor, is to not be a saver first. If you invest first, any financial difficulty that comes along will demand liquidity and accessibility. Why? Savings are best defined as having a known outcome for your principal and any earnings, and are both liquid and accessible. Investments, by contrast, have an undeterminable outcome for your principal plus any earnings and thus timing will influence liquidity and accessibility. There are often tax penalties that would again restrict liquidity or accessibility. In other word, savings allow you to always know what you have

Tell your broker, advisor, mutual fund or scholarship plan salesperson, “Help me become a saver and I will be a better investor AND client later!”

Don’t get malled!

BELLS ARE RINGING at the MSO!

Marion Klinnert, Owner Private Moments Lingerie and Ladies Wear I used to work as a sales rep. selling to one of the big department stores. I called on 18 stores on a monthly basis, straightening up shelves and replenishing stock, doing inventory and writing orders for the product that had been sold since my previous visit. I also used to fly to the east coast, Moncton and Halifax and service two of that same chain of stores. Now, if I was really, really tired or not paying attention I couldn’t tell you where I was; in what town or for that matter, what province! The malls all looked the same. The same mix of stores, same layout, clothes, shoes and food courts. It was a good way to make a living but after 8 years the “bloom was off the rose” and the job became mundane, tedious and the challenge was gone. I had learned the job, customer needs, seasonal changes and economic challenges.

Christmas is almost here and “Bells Are Ringing!” thanks to our concert sponsor, Great-West Life. It’s time to dust the snow off your sleigh bells and bring the gang down to Hammerson Hall for the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra’s annual family Christmas concert at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 15th. Guest conductor Matthew Jones will be flying his sleigh down to balmy Mississauga from his home in snowy Timmins to lead the audience in rousing choruses of all your seasonal favourites. He will even accompany a few of them on his recorder! You may wish to applaud wildly, but no! jingling only, please! You may ring sleigh bells, cowbells, hand bells, even car keys – anything that jingles in time to the music. Before and after the concert you and your children can visit the popular petting zoo once again being held in the Atrium. No, we’re not talking about Rudolph and the other reindeer! This unique petting zoo features musical instruments from Long & McQuade. Their knowledgeable and helpful staff will talk to you about various instruments and let you try them. Perhaps you have always wanted to play the flute, trumpet or cello. Try it out! It is never too late to learn an instrument – in addition to playing sleigh bells, that is!

Along comes 1985. I find myself in Port Credit and am one of five new business owners, relatively young and a newbie…hmmm. The economy was strong and the adage “open the doors and they will come” was our mantra. Well, it’s 27 Christmases later and things have changed. I can’t believe I’m using the line “where has the time gone?” sounding like my parents did when I was a teenager! We, you the reader and I still doing business, are older and wiser. Our lives have changed…children have grown up and grandchildren are on the scene. Time is precious. That’s where the small businesses in your local neighborhood can make a big difference. We aren’t cookie cutter businesses. We know our stuff! We’re experts. Even the people who work for us know what they are talking about! They know all about the products they are selling. They know how to say please and thank you and enjoy helping, selling and pleasing whomever they are dealing with…hmmm. A question? Do you ever walk out of a big chain store and say to yourself “well, that was a great shopping experience!” For you I hope so…because spending your hard earned money should be gratifying. Spending your hard earned money in your neighborhood provides a livelihood for all who work in the businesses and stores and it makes for a healthy local economy. The businesses can sustain good and bad times and be there for the long haul.

Do you still need stocking stuffers and special gifts for the people on your list? In what has become another annual tradition, musicians of the Mississauga Symphony will be showcasing their other artistic talents as painters, photographers, woodworkers, jewellery makers, weavers, knitters… You can visit the Christmas market in the Atrium before and after the concert. If you don’t have your own jingle bells, you can purchase them at the door for a toonie. And don’t forget to wear your Santa hat! See you at the concert, and ho! ho! ho! Last year’s concert sold out, so get your tickets now! Call the Living Arts Centre Box office at 905.306.6000 or go to www.livingartscentre.ca. Discounts for seniors, students and families.

Not long ago a customer asked me why I always had things the malls didn’t. Hmmm!? Lots of reasons! I’m not a cookie cutter. I pay attention to the needs and wants of my customers. Try my hardest to please! Work long hours! Volunteer in my community! Give back! I have learned a lot over the last 27 years and I am happy to say nothing is mundane or tedious! I’m still learning and listening, changing with the seasons and with your continued support will weather economic challenges…..And I have become an expert! Since this is the last issue of the “Village” papers (for the year) I would like to wish you and yours a very happy and healthy Christmas. On behalf of Mariya and myself, a big thank you to our supporters for another great year in Port Credit. PS.. I invite you to experience a small business that can make a big difference in the way you shop. Private Moments Lingerie and Ladies Wear is located at 259 Lakeshore Rd. East in Port Credit. City Pays Tribute to Carmen Corbasson

NHL player returns to roots

By J.Knox

New York Islander, Brad Boyes, returned to his roots on Saturday morning to help out young players at Vic Johnston’s arena. With the NHL lockout still unresolved, Boyes is working out in the Toronto area.

On Saturday, October 13th, the City of Mississauga held a ceremony to honor the late Carmen Corbasson, former Ward 1 Councillor, with a plaque unveiling and the official renaming of the Cawthra Community Centre to the Carmen Corbasson Community Centre.

As part of Streetsville Hockey League and Frontline Hockey School’s combined initiative to provide players with skill development sessions, Boyes got some additional ice time when he went was a ‘surprise coach’ on the ice with some of the league’s young hockey players to do some drills and skills with them. Vic Johnston arena is where Boyes first began to play organized hockey when he was 6 years old.

The Corbasson family and friends were in attendance as were Mayor Hazel McCallion, MP Stella Ambler and Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey. Friends and Dignitaries who spoke at the event gave the common sentiment that all the great work she did for the community during her 16-year tenure as Ward 1 Councillor went far beyond the regular call of duty.

“It was great to be back here at Vic Johnston and be on the ice. It is where it all started for me. I have a special connection to this rink. I hope that these young players continue to love the game and being part of something special here at Vic Johnston’s,” Boyes said.

During the ceremony Carmen was also awarded, posthumously, with the Diamond Jubilee Medal by Stella Ambler who said it was an honor and privilege to present the Medal to Carmen’s daughters Lisa and Julie for all the work that she did in the community. “Carmen was a person with a big heart. She cared about her community and gave back from the time she was young woman, I think that made her a great Councillor. The things that she did for strangers and for people that she met that were less fortunate than her, is what made me realize that this is a woman who deserves recognition. I was happy on behalf of the Government of Canada, The Prime Minister, Steven Harper and Queen Elizabeth II, to give her the Diamond Jubilee award for her community work. It was a good day “ said Stella.

Once the players knew who was on the ice with them, they seemed to be even more jump in their legs while doing the drills and skills. “He showed me the how to do my crossovers even better,” said an excited 8 year old, Jack Karosas who plays for the Novice Penguins. “It was fun because he helped me skate on one foot,” said teammate, Jake Timko. Eight year old Benjamin Williams thought having an NHL player at their practice was great. “When we were sprinting, he was in our group. He is a fast skater.”

The newly renamed Carmen Corbasson Community Center is located at 1399 Cawthra Road in Mississauga.

The NHL lockout is affecting a lot of people in many ways, but Saturday morning some young local player’s got a special thrill because of the impasse.

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR VIBA TODAY?

Wrap up your holiday stress

By Harold Johnson, CPA, CA

The mere suggestion of holiday stress evokes memories of the past and anxiety of what’s yet to come, robbing us of our health and what should be a happy holiday season.

As a rule an article written by an accountant is probably not high on your list of priorities while perusing this paper, but if you are an owner of a business, you cannot afford to overlook this presentation.

When we think of stress, we think of the emotional kind that comes from too much to do and so little time to do it. But that’s only one form of stress. We need to be aware of the three types of stress that can keep us from showing up as the best version of ourselves during the holiday season.

At MBS we have been providing traditional public accounting services for a good number of years. As a business owner, you know that the annual or semiannual visit with your accountant will produce the results of last year, a corporate tax return, and probably some good ideas about tax planning. As accountants our costs are higher and higher, the rules are ever changing and we value the service we provide. As a business owner, the professional fees paid are a grudge expense – a necessary layout of cash to keep you onside with regulatory requirements, but an expense nonetheless that has not really added any value to your business.

Physical Stress Physical demands simply multiply during the holidays with long days on our feet shopping the malls, wrapping, lifting and running around. Add to that, sitting at a computer all day and perhaps being overweight which all contributes to weakened postural support.

Two years ago we commissioned an independent survey to find out what clients and business owners want. Overwhelmingly the response was “services that add value to my business, that make me more profitable, that make me a better business.”

Chemical Stress Probably the greatest holiday stressor – you’re eating habits. Overindulgence in food and drink. Smoking and excess alcohol. High blood sugar levels… and what about the medication you take to settle all that discomfort. The ongoing exposure to chemical stress over the holiday season wreaks havoc and “wear and tear” on your entire body, right down to the cellular level.

The message was loud and clear and we took it upon ourselves to research the best opportunities to develop what our clients and business people wanted. We became affiliated with Bstar and the VIBA program - Value Improvement Business Advice. We invested in training, technology and essentially redefined what we do.

Emotional Stress Now we’re talking. Meeting deadlines, relationships, memories, the perfect gift for that special someone, credit cards stretched to the limit, and on and on… How can we handle it all?

The VIBA focus is forward looking and proactive. It is strategy and value based, providing integrated real time advisory services and solutions. We start with your company’s value today and show you how this value increases throughout the advisory process. Let’s look at it another way. If we could show you the numbers for winning a $50,000 lotto draw would you be interested? Sure. How about if we could show you how to add $50,000 of value to your business? Why wouldn’t you be interested!

The best way to cope is first be aware of the three forms of stress, physical, chemical and emotional, how they can affect your health, and how to respond to them. Don’t let stress leave you disempowered. Be disciplined and take control by striving for optimal physical, mental and social well-being particularly over the holiday season when temptations lurk around every corner.

VIBA is for any size business. We provide Better Business Programs, Business and Business Life Plans, Staff Value Programs, Turn Around Programs, and the Succession and Transition Program. Your future is at stake. We will be there with you to ensure you and your business succeeds, and you can unlock all the value that may be hidden in the way you do business now.

All three forms of stress affect your nervous system. Stress will show up where we are most vulnerable. Our neck. Our low back. Tightness between the shoulders. Stress can increase the frequency of headaches and compromise our sleep. Chiropractic care, with its purpose of reducing stress on the nervous system, can be helpful. Of course chiropractic care can’t eliminate stress, but it sure can improve your ability to tolerate it. Regular chiropractic care now, especially with holiday stress around the corner, could be a wise investment for a healthier version of you.

We invite you to learn more about what we can do for your business. It starts with a complimentary Needs Assessment Workshop. You invest the time in the one-on-one session and we pick up the cost. We believe in VIBA. It works, it adds value. VIBA has been proven with existing clients. At MBS we want to help you add value to your business. Take the time for our Needs Assessment Workshop and learn more on what we can do for you.

From all of us at Streetsville Chiropractic, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season. www.streetsvillechiropractic.com.

Village Market Report By Scott Brubacher

Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 6,896 transactions through the TorontoMLS system in October 2012 – a decrease of 7.1 per cent compared to October 2011. There were two more business days in October 2012 versus October 2011. On a per business day basis, transactions were down by 15.6 per cent.* “Sales have decreased in the second half of this year compared to 2011, especially since the onset of stricter mortgage lending guidelines at the beginning of July. The prospect of higher monthly mortgage payments due to the reduced maximum amortization period has prompted some households to delay their home purchase,” said Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Ann Hannah. The average selling price for October transactions was $503,479 – up 6.2 per cent compared to October 2011. The MLS® Home Price Index composite benchmark price, which allows for an apples-to-apples comparison in terms of home attributes, was up by 5.1 per cent. As we move into the Christmas season, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Enjoy the holiday season and play it safe. Holly’s Tips Beating the winter blues Here are a few ideas to help you avoid putting on extra pounds this winter. • At the first hint of cold, set aside time to plan a ‘realistic’ exercise routine.

Hockey & Skating for the Whole Family

• Relax, most people gain from 5 to 7 pounds (2.25 – 3.25 kilos) during winter, then come spring, easily lose it when we are naturally more active.

Public Skating

• Help combat winter’s typical symptoms; fatigue and carb cravings, by keeping your home as bright as possible – every morning, open curtains and blinds and let in the light!

• Summerize your surroundings as much as possible. Wear brightly coloured clothing, post a few summertime photos on the fridge door, once a month put on your favourite shorts or bathing suit.

Sunday’s until end of March 1:00-2:30pm

• Eating to beat the blues Get a breakfast boost. In winter, the natural thing to do in the morning is to load up on carbs, but that causes weight gain. Instead, increase your protein intake. Opt for an egg-based breakfast or a slice of whole-grain bread with peanut butter.

Learn-to-Skate

Lessons for your 4 and 5 year old Next session starts in January!

At lunch, think healthy and light. Make soups your winter staple – choose soups containing lean protein that will fill you up. Snack for the fridge, not the pantry. Kitchen cupboards usually contain high calorie snacks…cookies, cereals, chips – all of which should be eaten sparingly. The healthiest foods are often found in the fridge…yogurt, fruit, veggies.

Financial Cliff … DEAD AHEAD!

Daley’s Tree Sales

By Mark D. Cashin AMP is a Mortgage Agent with Dominion Lending Centres Central Mississauga

By Lindsay Howe

The icebergs are melting so we need a new metaphor and the new buzz word following the U.S. Presidential Election is FINANCIAL CLIFF! The armchair experts are warning of catastrophic consequences if our governments do not address the massive deficits and accumulated debt.

Bruce Daley’s premium Christmas trees are fresh cut, straight from Nova Scotia. Daley’s trees are sold at 3 locations throughout Mississauga. At Centre Plaza in Streetsville, the Canadian Tire at Mavis and Dundas and Michael-Angelo’s Market Place at Erin Mills and the 403. Make your Christmas celebration complete with a stunning Daley tree for your home.

A new StatsCan figure for personal Debt to Income ratio is up to 163.4% and climbing, although we hold more assets than our UK & US counterparts it is primarily tied up in our homes. Here is the rub. IF and only IF our housing market “corrects” and values decrease and the economy tanks then there are worries that our personal equity will also follow suit. These debt concerns and the new “tightening” of the mortgage rules will make it very challenging for homeowners in the future to unlock equity.

Bruce Daley’s ever so beautiful ever greens are the talk of the town again this year. Each year Daley supplies a grand tree for Streetsville Main Street Square. The tree is unveiled at the tree lighting ceremony, ringing in the Christmas season. This year a new tradition was started at the Tree Lighting Ceremony. To the awe of the community, not one, but 6 Daley Christmas trees were revealed on Friday, November 23.

How does this affect you? Get your Total Debt Service (TDS) in line: The percentage of the borrower’s income that is needed to cover housing costs (GDS) plus any other monthly obligations that a borrower has, such as credit card payments and car payments. HOW? 1) Consolidate your debts: If you have high interest debts such as Credit Cards, NOW is the time to take action! Mortgage rates are the lowest they have been in over 78 years, so take advantage of them and if possible LOCK IN and protect your future. (See 1)

Check out the astonishing trees at Streetsville Main Street Square located at Queen and Main Street. Visit one of the Daley tree locations to bring home your own Nova Scotia tree for your living room. Plan on getting your tree early December as there is a limited quantity available.

2) Protect your Credit Rating: Known as your Beacon Score. Consolidating your high interest debts into ONE (lower) payment will help your family’s cash flow, increase your family wealth and protect or repair your credit score. Great rates all start with a GREAT Beacon Score. You can check your credit @ www. equifax.ca or www.transunion.ca be careful when you are “shopping” the more your credit is accessed by lenders the more your Beacon Score decreases.

Daley’s trees are located at Centre Plaza Streetsville, the Canadian Tire at Mavis and Dundas and Michael-Angelo’s Market Place at 403 and Erin Mills. For more information, call Bruce Daley at 905-826-1512.

3) Good Credit, Bad Credit or NO CREDIT: There is a debt consolidation plan for everyone! Your first step is to contact a professional in the industry and get started with a plan. Find the right professional for you and do not let the fear of the unknown prevent you from taking the first step. 4) Start to create wealth: This is the easiest and most rewarding part of the plan. Switch from monthly payments to by-weekly or even better accelerated weekly payments. Just by taking this simple step you will take years off your amortization and save. See table (See 2)

Stavebank Florist is your Neighbourhood Florist

Your Florida home and taxes

By Lindsay Howe

This winter, as many of us will travel south of the border in search of sun and fun, you may be toying with an idea of purchasing a US property to enjoy in the years to come. Here are some tax considerations to keep in mind when making this decision:

Stavebank Florist is a thriving business in the Port Credit village. The flower boutique opened in 1963 and has undergone major developments in recent years.

SMALL FOCUS BUSINESS

Under new management, Mona Abdul took over Stavebank Florist 2 years ago and implemented her plans to refurbish the shop. Throughout these changes, Stavebank maintains the same friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Their affordable, high quality floral arrangements and gifts continue to draw both loyal and new customers.

If you use your vacation home for part of the year, and rent it for another, you will have to file US income tax as non-resident alien. Any passive income you derive from United States, including rental income, will be subject to a 30% non-resident withholding tax. You may also choose to treat your rental income as business in which situation graduated tax rates will be applied on your net rental income, ie ,after accounting for all expenses associated with carrying on your rental business.

Stavebank Florist has been satisfying their customer’s floral needs for 50 years! Stavebank Florist specializes in weddings, funeral work, special occasions, Christmas, anniversaries and birthdays. With their spectrum of fresh florals, Stavebank Florist has the floral arrangement of your dreams for that special occasion. From a beautiful floral wreath for your front door, to a centre-piece for your dining room table, to bouquets for your wedding or anniversaries, Stavebank’s exquisite flowers will brighten every occasion. Visit the flower boutique and discover the freshest, most unique looking flowers. Stavebank also offers a line of home fragrances, oil lamps, and body products!

You will also have to declare this income in Canada as you have to report your world-wide income when filing Canadian taxes. However, based on Canada-US tax treaty, you will be allowed a foreign tax credit for the tax you paid in US, so essentially you will not be taxed twice on the same income. However, depending on your tax bracket, you may still pay some additional tax in Canada if tax paid in US is less than that in Canada.

Owner Mona fully renovated the store to give it a more modern appeal. Yet Mona wanted to pay homage to the previous owners by preserving elements of the original design. Mona was welcomed kindly to the Port Credit neighbourhood and she is already a contributing member of the Port Credit community, supporting many of the local events. Come check out the newly renovated flower boutique. Plan to order flowers from Stavebank for your next occasion. Consultations are always free.

If you sell your property in the US. there may be a capital gain to be reported to IRS. Generally, your capital gain will be subject to non-resident withholding tax of 30%. If you pass away and leave your US property in the estate you will be subject to US estate tax. Canada does not impose estate tax so it is an alien concept to us. However, the tax burden may actually be quite significant on death if you own US property. So far, there has been an exemption, which sheltered estates with a value of less than 5 million worldwide. However, this exemption is scheduled to change to 1 million in 2013. Unless new legislation is introduced in the meantime, anyone with a US property and total value of assets at death of over 1 million, including home, life insurance etc., will be subject to US estate tax on the real property owned in US. This tax is calculated on the value of the property, and not capital gain. Such tax is also imposed on other US assets held at the time of death, including individual shares of public companies. The same exemption applies.

Stavebank Florist is located at 120 Lakeshore Road East in Port Credit. For more information, visit Stavebank Florist online at www.stavebankflorist.com. Contact the store at 905-278-2426 or email info@stavebankforist.com.

Property tax is slightly higher for non-residents in Florida. Regular residents are allowed so called homestead exemption, whereby no tax is imposed on the first 50K of property value. Non-residents cannot claim this exemption. If you do have or intend to acquire US property proper tax planning is required. It is extremely important to get thoroughly familiar with laws on both sides of the border before making a decision. Eva Kupiec, CMA and Beata Kurpiewski, CGA are located at Principals of Professional Accounting Office at 3461 Lake Shore Blvd. W. www.beaccounting.ca

Working together as a team

MapLaw

By Dr. Perebzak, Port Credit Chiropractic Wellness Center

More than a third of back pain sufferers find help at the hands of many health professionals. Using different therapies, these patients have found relief from both the pain and the problem.

In July of this year, Morgan Anderson Phillips LLP, a new law firm specializing in Family and Estate Law, opened its doors in Mississauga with offices conveniently located in the Sussex Centre near Square One Shopping Plaza.

Among the therapies they’ve chosen are chiropractic care, which can restore and maintain health through the gentle manipulation of joints and the spine, physiotherapy, which can provide treatment and exercises to strengthen your back and massage therapy which can relieve the additional strain that back pain puts on your muscles. Health professionals are working together to fight back pain.

The firm, also known as MAPLaw, was the creation of three lawyers, Stephen Morgan, Shannon Anderson and Anita Phillips who have a combined three decades of experience providing family and estate law advice and direction.

Ultimately, the success of any treatment relies on patients taking an active role in it. Simple things to keep in mind include stretching before physical activities, keeping backpacks and purses light and stretching after an hour of television or sitting at the computer.

Whether you are getting married, experiencing a breakdown in your relationship, or dealing with a death in the family, the lawyers at MAPLaw can help. They use alternative settlement methods including negotiation, mediation and collaborative family law when possible and appropriate to prevent costly litigation and achieve positive outcomes for their clients. Because there is no one size fits all approach to separation, divorce, estate planning or estate litigation, they will work with you to ensure that your family and property are protected.

Together with physicians, chiropractors, nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists, patients have a key role to play in finding and following the most appropriate treatment options. By combining the expertise of various health professionals, back pain sufferers are more likely to benefit from care that will get them back on their feet for good.

Stephen Morgan is a senior family law lawyer whose practice focusses on respect and understanding the needs of each client. His overriding message to clients is the importance of resolving matters quickly, to minimize the damage that is done to clients and their children by hostile and lengthy court proceedings.

You are an integral part of your health care team! Please contact our office Monday through Saturday at 905-271-1161 for any of your health concerns. Our health care team and staff wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season. Thank you for your support in 2012!

Shannon Anderson was born and raised in Mississauga and continues to maintain strong ties with the Mississauga community. Her legal practice spans all aspects of family law including division of property, child and spousal support, and custody and access. Shannon is committed to keeping her clients informed, educated and involved in every step of their legal matter. Anita Phillips is a senior lawyer as well as a trust and estate planner. She assists clients with sensitivity in dealing with the loss of a loved one and skill in preparing their estate plan to protect their assets for their family. Anita has a particular expertise in developing estate plans for clients with blended families and for independent business owners. The lawyers at MAPLaw will provide you with the knowledgeable direction and advice you need to move forward with your life. For a free half hour consultation in Family Law, including custody, access, separation, divorce and support or Estate Litigation, including challenges to wills and estates, please visit maplaw.ca or call 905-275-8200.
