Celebrating Streetsville’s Rich Heritage

By Lindsay Howe

The Village of Streetsville is home to the highest concentration of historic buildings in Mississauga! Streetsville’s fascinating heritage dates all the way back to the early 1800’s when the first settlers came to the area. At this time, Streetsville was covered in forestland and the pioneer community had to build from nothing. As we walk down our village main streets and admire the unique buildings and thriving businesses that exist today, many of us can’t help but wonder about the generations of businesses and century-old buildings in downtown Streetsville.

Studying heritage buildings in the village helps us understand how our society and environment has developed over time. Several of the historical buildings in Streetsville were built even before the time of confederation. These local landmarks each have a fascinating story and have become cornerstones of our town history. The buildings dating back to the 19th century are studied for their architecture, but also for the occupants that resided there, including some of the original founders of Streetsville and other notable contributing members of the community. Maintaining the historical character of the original structures is so important to give a building the reverence it deserves. History buff, and leader of the Historical Streetsville Walking Tours for over 15 years Kay Matthews states, “Although we don’t want to be stuck in time, we need to be proud of the heritage that we’ve had and maintain the integrity of the heritage.” To the disappointment of many local historians who are deeply connected to Streetsville’s history, far too many heritage buildings have been taken down, or else altered and changed. The brickwork on these heritage buildings has decayed over time. Instead of trying to conserve, or repair these buildings, stucco has become a quick and easy fix to get the exterior looking ‘good as new’ again. The problem is that this does permanent damage to the original brickwork underneath, which is most unfortunate because these buildings are not getting the respect deserved. continued on page 8

Holly’s Tips Around the house By Holly Maricotti

Phantom carriers are products that draw power 24 hours a day. Appliances that have a clock or programming displays such as coffee makes, DVD players, computers, printers and other electronic equipment are considered phantom load carriers. 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Taking action Unplug electrical appliances and equipment when they’re not in use. Use a power bar that connects all of these units and then simply get into the habit of switching the bar off. Hot water Most hot water heaters use 15% of a home’s energy, producing approximately two tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Taking action Turn down the temperature on your water heater to reduce energy consumption. When on holiday or away from home for an extended times, turn off the heater. Laundry The most energy efficient cycle to wash and rinse your clothes is cold-cold. Taking action Use cold water to wash your clothes. If every household in Canada did this, it would reduce approximately 1.5 billion kg of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Earth Day 2015: Working Together Towards Affecting Change Earth Day will take place on Wednesday, April 22nd this year. People all over the world will take part to show their appreciation for the planet and work together towards enacting change. Earth day is an opportunity to show how important the environment is to you. Making small changes to our everyday routines can make an enormous positive difference to our environment. Here are some basic, yet essential ways you help improve the planet: • Taking shorter showers and refraining from taking baths • Stop buying bottled water and use a reusable container instead • Replacing regular light bulbs with fluorescent ones • Turning off computers at night • Using rechargeable batteries • Hanging up clothes to dry • Using reusable bags instead of plastic bags • Recycling newspapers • Paying bills online (canceling paper statements) • Buying local foods • Walking / cycling or carpooling to work

Surprise Valentine’s Proposal By Lindsay Howe

On Thursday, February 12th love was truly in the air in Streetsville. Countless couples were celebrating an early Valentine’s Day dinner that night under the romantic candlelight. One couple in particular had a reason to celebrate love that evening! Tyler Barry proposed to the love of his life, Tanya Thomas. It all started with Tyler blindfolding his girlfriend Tanya and leading her into the restaurant. Little did Tanya know, the couple’s family and friends were hidden in the bar area of the restaurant, brimming with anticipation for Tyler to pop the question. As soon as the surprise proposal was complete, family members entered the dining room and gathered around, filled with love and excitement for the happy couple. Mississauga’s longest running mayor, Hazel McCallion was also dining in Streetsville that evening. When the recently retired Mayor heard all the commotion from the proposal, she went straight over to congratulate the couple and wish them well! Patrons dining nearby had read all the signs and were well aware that a proposal would be taking place. Celebrating a co-worker’s birthday at a neighbouring table, sat the staff of Kendellhurst Academy School. These ladies had front row seats to witness this pivotal moment and waited excitedly for Tyler to get down on one knee and propose. Nasha Mehta, a teacher at Kendellhurst commented, “It was such a beautiful proposal and it was obvious to all of us how happy and in love they are.” The joyousness of the occasion was felt across the dining room! Congratulations to Tyler Barry and Tanya Thomas on their Engagement!

Business Improvement Areas: What they are and how they benefit the community

The Streetsville BIA is committed to supporting the economic, cultural and social wellbeing of the community. Notwithstanding their substantial involvement, many are unaware of what a BIA is, what it does, and the significant contributions they have made within your community. What is a BIA? BIA stands for a Business Improvement Area. A BIA is a formal association of business owners within a region, managed by a board operating in accordance with the city’s Municipal Acts and Codes. In the village of Streetsville for example, there are 300 individual businesses. The BIA functions as a voice for local businesses, offering discussions to address issues and share mutual concerns. Together these issues are met with specific resolutions and carried out. BIA’s provide businesses with secure funding, and access to city programs. The BIA provides marketing and promotions for both the businesses and village events. The Streetsville BIA has made extensive contributions to the village’s well-received local festivals and events. Without the BIA’s function of planning, marketing, and promoting for these events, not to mention their financial contributions, these community events would not be as successful, or cease to be carried out all-together. The BIA’s lead community building and promotional initiatives in an effort to meet their goal of preserving the close-knit community and maintaining the natural ambiance of the village. A BIA’s involvement and implementation of initiatives helps to increase pride and interest within the community. Their involvement ranges from participating in seasonal and historical events, to heading engaging activities and friendly competitions. A Business Improvement Area is also responsible for beautifying the streets, by planting shrubs and flowers, and hosting community cleanups. Who Benefits from Having a BIA? A BIA benefits all businesses in the area: from retail, professional, dining, entertainment or finance. The BIA works to expand the business operator’s customer base. The consumer is also benefited, ensuring they receive the best value, and quality customer care. BIA’s benefit property owners, as the initiatives and activities carried out create and maintain a vibrant and successful environment. These and other factors relating to the BIAs contributions help to increase property values. We are fortunate to have such an active and involved BIA in Streetsville that recognize and support local businesses, providing the support and assistance necessary to continue to grow and thrive. A special thanks to our village BIA for the vital difference they make within our community!

Bread and Honey once again Top 100 Festival

Streetsville’s Rich Heritage continued from front cover

The following sites are just a few of Streetsville’s most note-worthy heritage buildings. The Historical Streetsville Walking Tours will take you up-close so you can experience these historic landmarks firsthand and hear the story behind the buildings that have played such an important part in our village history!

It is almost that time of year again--the 43rd Annual Streetsville Founders’ Bread and Honey Festival is quickly approaching. The festival begins Friday, June 5th and runs through to Sunday, June 7th. The Bread and Honey Festival was recently recognized by Festivals and Events Ontario (FEO) as one of Ontario’s top 100 Festivals. Did you know that the Bread and Honey Festival is the second longest running Festival? Second only to the Canadian National Exhibition! Come out to Streetsville Memorial Park to experience all your festival favourites including the villagewide Bread and Honey parade, carnival rides and games and the sweet taste of free bread and honey.

Historical Buildings Deep-Rooted in Streetsville’s History: The Montreal House was built in 1821 and remains the oldest structure in Streetsville and the oldest store in all of Mississauga. This two-story wood and aluminum house was home to John Barnhart who opened up Streetsville’s first general store and trading post for the community. During that time Canada was a fur trading industry, and Barnhart’s store helped provide the community with the necessities needed for pioneer life. Remarkably, the building is still open for business today, located at the corner of Queen Street and Pearl Street.

Bread and Honey Parade The parade takes place on Saturday, June 6th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. along Queen Street South, from Britannia Road down to Church Street. Streetsville residents and people from all over Mississauga look forward to the Bread and Honey Parade each year because of the unique, eye catching floats, the characters and costumes.

The Franklin House in one of Streetsville’s most talked about historical buildings. The Franklin House was built in 1855 to be used as a private residence and was later sold and turned into the Franklin House Hotel in 1876. There is a lot of mystery and intrigue that goes along with the history of the Franklin House. So much so that author Terry Doyle devoted an entire chapter to the many reported haunting incidents in his book Haunted Ontario, Ghostly Inns, Hotels, and Other Eerie Places. In his book, the Franklin House is described in detail as a certified haunted building. The Franklin House is said to be haunted by a benevolent spirit who has been named “Jesse”. The legend is that Jesse, a lady of the night, hung herself after finding out she was pregnant. It is said that she could not sustain a baby and therefore took her own life in the room she was staying in at The Franklin House. It has been said by many who frequent the Franklin House that there is definite poltergeist activity there including rearranging things, talking to customers, moving things, shattering glasses, flickering the lights, letting the dog out at night and other eerie occurrences.

Entertainment for All With such a wide range of events, Bread and Honey is a festival everyone will enjoy and walk away with a smile and special memories. People of all ages can enjoy the petting zoo, magicians, carnival, beach volleyball and so much more! The main stage in Memorial Park and upper stage lot feature ongoing entertainment and phenomenal band performances. Rotary Market and Pancake Breakfast While you are at Bread and Honey, don’t forget to check out the Streetsville Rotary Consumer market at Vic Johnston Community Centre with over 100 vendors. The Streetsville Rotary Club’s annual Pancake Breakfast will take place on Sunday, June 7th in the Banquet Hall of the Vic Johnston Community Centre. The funds raised are going to support Easter Seals. Island Fun Across the bridge--on the island--you can explore a wide variety of craft vendors while your children enjoy pony rides, face painting, inflatable bouncers, free train rides and other fun activities. Your kids will love the entertaining performers on the Busy Bee Children’s Island Stage.

Lastly, the Streetsville Village Hall (Streetsville’s BIA Office) located at 180 Queen Street South was originally built in the 1860’s. This traditional style meeting hall first served as a tinsmithing business, when steel was a necessity. Tin was used to make buckets to collect water from the Credit River, to feed animals, make kettles, lanterns, and so forth. This building later became the location for the first Streetsville Public Library!

Check out the craft vendors showcasing unique jewelry, children’s clothing and accessories, fashion clothing, sock monkeys, leather goods, wood products, garden decorative hats, scarves, slippers, purses, pictures and paintings. You can also find kitchen items, honey and syrup, homemade soaps, homemade fudge, lollipops, cupcakes, and other tasty treats. Come by and discover these homemade, one-of-a-kind treasures! The Sweetest Taste of summer The festival wouldn’t be complete without the Bread and Honey booth. Stop by to sample the fluffy white or whole-wheat bread coated with local honey, compliments of Panera Bread. Volunteers will be busy spreading butter and honey on the slices to feed the masses that come for this special treat.

Historical Streetsville Walking Tours The Historical Streetsville Walking Tours take place once a month from May to October. On this journey you will have the opportunity to visit and learn about over 25 of Streetsville’s most significant historic landmarks, including Streetsville’s founder Timothy Street’s home, Montreal House, Franklin House and the revived Streetsville Cenotaph. The tour will bring to life how the village gradually transformed from an industrial mill town, into the lucrative small business and services centre that it is today.

The Bread and Honey Festival wouldn’t be possible without the kindness and dedication of hundreds of volunteers lending a helping hand. A special thank you to all those who devote so much time and energy making Bread and Honey such a great success each year!

Here are the following dates: Saturday, May 31st from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 19th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 21st from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. (*Candlelight Tour) Saturday, September 12th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 18th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Why Hire a Realtor?

Bantam A Provincials come to Streetsville!

By Scott Brubacher, Real Estate Broker Royal LePage Meadowtowne Realty Brokerage 905.821.3200

The exciting countdown is on. Less than three weeks to go!

There has been a lot of discussion this year about alternatives to using the services of a traditional, licensed realtor for buying or selling your house. Some companies promote a “do-it-yourself” option and others will match consumers with realtors willing to work at a deeply discounted rate. I’m all for saving people money. As a licensed realtor myself, I negotiate the commission I charge for my services. And I’m concerned that the conversation, in Ontario at least, has omitted crucial information related to real estate as a Profession, while ignoring the fact that real estate salespeople—the good ones, that is—are Professionals. Real estate in this country is highly regulated and built around an infrastructure designed to protect the public interest. It includes:

For the first time, the Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association (MMHA) has been awarded the Bantam “A” Ontario Hockey Federation Championship (OHF) from April 10-12, 2015, to be held at the Streetsville Arena - Vic Johnston Community Centre. The arena is located at 335 Church Street, Mississauga. The OHF Championships are a pinnacle event that marks the end of the playing season for 500 competitive minor hockey players across Ontario. The tournament will host the top 5 rep teams from the 98 rep teams playing Bantam A across the province. Bantam refers to players who are 14 years old. We are excited that the host team Meadowvale Mohawks has made the cut!

The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO). This body administrates the Real Estate and Business Brokers ACT, 2002(REBBA 2002) and associated regulations on behalf of the provincial government. It has established a mandatory consumer deposit protection program. RECO investigates complaints against realtors, and it has the authority to confiscate a realtor’s records in order to investigate.

Meadowvale is committed to providing a first class event. We welcome Event Sponsors for a range of sponsorship opportunities, including a Presenting Sponsor, Game Sponsors and silent auction donations. All contributions are greatly appreciated. To receive a Sponsorship Package please email 2015bantamaohf@gmail.com.

The Multiple Listing Service (MLS). The MLS Listing service is not just a website – it`s a cooperative system used by Realtors who are members of Canada’s Real estate boards. The integrity of MLS data depends on the dedicated work of thousands of realtors working to serve their clients. We pay yearly dues to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) and to local real estate boards like the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) to ensure that the MLS information is publicly available. Without our financial contributions, there would be no MLS.

Members of the public are invited to watch exciting tournament games from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Bring your family out to cheer on the local Mississauga team. Join us for the Opening Ceremony at 6.45 pm followed by the first home game on Friday, April 10th. Let’s fill the stands with cheering supporters. Free Friday night admission for anyone wearing a Meadowvale jersey! The Closing Ceremony will be on Sunday, April 12th following the 3 pm final game. Which 2 teams will make it to the final game? Only time will tell. A Day Pass is $10 and a weekend pass for all the games is $25. Get the latest tournament details by visiting our website: www.mmhaohf.wordpress.com

Various structured, legislated bodies, including real estate boards (local, provincial and national) and brokerages. Realtors pay numerous fees that support consumer protection and quality service. Many of us also actively volunteer for our real estate boards to support the professional conduct of real estate in our communities. Regulation around money laundering. The federal government has mandated that every real estate transaction requires the completion of a Fintrac declaration that helps facilitate the detection, prevention and deterrence of money laundering. The government has also put us on the front line of detecting activity of those wanting to benefit from the proceeds of crime.

Head Coach Mark Van Rassel and the Meadowvale Bantam A team look forward to the Provincials!

Hockey on the Credit

It’s about as Canadian as it gets! Local Streetsville residents “braved” the cold brisk winter and enjoyed some good old fashioned pond hockey. The parents thought the children should get the chance to play hockey outdoors and skate on natural ice, so they cleared an area on the Credit River for a game of shinny. A reminder skating on the Credit River is not always available and the ice surface changes with the weather and snow conditions.

Canadian flag celebrates 50 years On Sunday, February 15th the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Flag was celebrated across Canada. MP Brad Butt hosted a special event to mark this milestone. The day featured live entertainment, and a flag raising. In true Canadian spirit, all that attended braved the frigid temperatures and gusty winds.

Cuchulainn’s Irish Pub reaches milestone

On Thursday, March 5th Cuchulainn’s Irish Pub celebrated ten years in business in the beautiful village of Streetsville. The family owned pub welcomed friends, family, loyal customers and special guests to commemorate the milestone. The celebration featured live music, World Champion Irish Dancers and greetings from local politicians including Mayor Bonnie Crombie and former Mayor Hazel McCallion.

A Lifetime of Service With honour and on his 94th birthday, Private Donald M. Blackmere was recognized for his lifetime of service to his community and Canada. Private Donald was awarded the Knight of the National Order of the Legion Honour for his meritorious service to the Republic of France during World War II. He served in the Canadian Army and fought on D-Day in Normandy France. Only a handful of Canadians have received this honour. Private Donald M. Blackmere comes from a long family military background. He is the great, great nephew of Sir Isaac Brock. Brock was major general, and was responsible for defending Upper Canada against the United States in the 1800’s.

Ward 11 update – by Councillor George Carlson After a very long winter, spring has finally arrived, and I know we are all looking forward to the milder weather and the sunshine! The start of the spring season also means that Earth Month is here! The month of April is Earth Month, and there are many ways that you and your family can get involved to preserve, protect, and conserve our natural environment for generations to come.

the 20-Minute Makeover, choose a location in your community and form a clean-up group with family, friends, or colleagues; you may also participate individually if you wish. Earth Days Twitter Chat with City of Mississauga staff expertsWednesday, April 22nd at 7pm You are invited to participate in an informative Earth Days Twitter Chat with City Staff experts. This is a great opportunity for you to ask your questions and share your ideas and feedback on living clean and green in Mississauga!

Earth Month has a long history, and the momentum continues to grow stronger each and every year thanks to awareness, commitment, and dedication of environmentally conscious citizens all over the world! Fortytwo years ago, Earth Day was established to create awareness and appreciation of our earth and its increasingly fragile natural environment. Celebrated on April 22nd, Earth Day has over a billion participants around the world.

Transit Litter Blitz- Thursday, April 23rd at 7am If you take MiWay transit, Transit Security Officers will be conducting a litter awareness blitz at various transit terminals across the City, so be sure to participate if you are able to.

Each year, individuals, businesses, schools, and governments around the world commemorate what has been achieved and discuss what remains to be done to protect our natural environment. Over the years, the momentum and support for Earth Day has grown so much that it has now evolved into Earth Week and Earth Month! Although the month of April is now set aside for Earth Month, after Earth Month is over, it would be great if we could treat every month as Earth Month and ensure that our actions preserve, protect, and conserve our natural environment.

One Million Trees Planting & Earth Markets Saturday, April 25th at 9am to 3pm Join the City of Mississauga to celebrate the progress has been made in the One Million Trees Mississauga planting program. One Million Trees Mississauga is a 20-year program to encourage residents, schools, community groups, and businesses to join the City’s tree planting efforts to plant more trees on both public and private lands in Mississauga. Bring your friends and family to Iceland Arena (705 Matheson Blvd. E., Mississauga) on Saturday, April 26th from 9am to 3pm and enjoy tree planting and a guided walk by LEAF (Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests) that highlights the interesting trees and natural features of the woodlot in this area. The Earth Market will celebrate local environmental accomplishments and provide hands-on activities for the whole family. This free event also features workshops, live music, vendors, information booths, a film screening and a healthy, local lunch option.

As a municipality, the City of Mississauga is committed to being a leader in green initiatives that conserve and protect our environment. To this end, the City just released its most recent 5 Year Energy Conservation Plan (2014-2019), which includes new ways to conserve energy, and help reduce our electricity and fossil fuel related emissions. This year’s plan targets a 1% reduction in energy use and Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) per year for facilities, over the next five years.

4th Annual Village Litter Blitz- Saturday, May 9th 2pm – 4pm Join Councillor Carlson, MP Brad Butt, MPP Bob Delaney, and Streetsville service groups (B.I.A., Cadets, Rotary, Lions Club, Scouts, and others) to help clean up litter in and around downtown Streetsville. Last year’s event was a great success, with over 150 community volunteers cleaning up over 2 tonnes of garbage and recyclables in just 2 hours! The event will begin at 2pm at Centre Plaza (128 Queen St. S.), where participants can join us for coffee, donuts, etc., before heading out to begin the cleanup. The event will conclude at 4pm and everyone can join us back at Centre Plaza for pizza, refreshments, and prizes! Elementary and high school students will receive credit for volunteer hours completed. Please bring your volunteer forms for signing. We will also be collecting items for the local food bank, so please bring some non-perishable food items if you are able. For more information, please call my office at 905-896-5011, or e-mail at george. carlson@mississauga.ca

Under the 5 Year Energy Conservation Plan, the City will meet its conservation targets by: • Re-commissioning facilities (i.e. ensuring that the design and operation of a building are in sync and working efficiently); • Performing a City-wide energy audit (visiting the majority of facilities to review equipment, such as HVAC and lighting, and determine where energy efficiency can be improved); • Implementing newer and broader energy efficiency measures; and • Increasing and promoting energy awareness. Since 2001, the City has implemented two successful Energy Conservation Plans, which have gone a long way towards preserving, protecting, and conserving our natural environment. In 2013, the City used over 206 million equivalent kilowatt hours (e-kWh) of electricity and natural gas in facilities (e.g. City-owned and operated buildings) and operations (e.g. energy use in parks, street lighting and traffic signals). This was equivalent to the amount of energy used in over 16,500 homes, and energy consumption was down 6% from 2011 levels. GHG emissions from City facilities and operations were over 27,500 tonnes in 2013, which was down 8.7% from 2011. This decrease in GHGG emissions was equivalent to the emissions from approximately 5,400 cars!

If you would like more information about Earth Day and Earth Month, please visit www.earthday.ca. For more information about the City’s 2015 Earth Days events, visit www.mississauga.ca/earthdays. As always, if you need any assistance on this or any other municipal matter, please don’t hesitate to contact my office at george.carlson@ mississauga.ca or 905-896-5011.

In 2013, the savings from completed energy measures reached 4,855 MWh of electricity and 471,000 m3 of natural gas. By 2019, with additional improvements, these annual savings are expected to increase to 9,100 MWh and 749,000 m3. Reduced usage has translated into significant cost savings. From 2004 through 2013, the energy measures completed have saved an estimated $3.9 million. By 2019, the total savings from energy measures should exceed the total investments in those measures. Also by 2019, the GHG reductions from energy measures are expected to reach 2,290 tonnes per year, more than double the City’s reductions from 2012 and almost a fourfold improvement in 10 years (from 2009)! You and your family can also make a positive impact on our natural environment with the actions that you take each and every day. For great tips on how you and your family can live clean and green, please visit the City’s Living Green website at www.mississauga.ca/livinggreen. There are also great green events across the City in which you can participate, so to bring your family and friends and check out these great local environmental events: 20-Minute Makeover- Wednesday, April 22nd at 2pm Join the thousands across Ontario who will volunteer for 20 minutes to pick up litter around their workplace, school or community. Camp Enterprise - May 6 – 9, 2015 By Pieter Kool Before college, business school, or their first jobs, 85 Mississauga high school students are learning what it takes to become tomorrow’s business leaders. Each year, the nine Rotary clubs in Mississauga conduct threeday educational retreats in a program known as Camp Enterprise at the University of Toronto - Mississauga Campus. At each retreat, seasoned business professionals and entrepreneurs teach the students how to develop, launch, and operate a successful business in a free Entreprise economic system.

“The environment was so invigorating. It only amplified throughout the event. We had incredible guest speakers, who I still stay in contact with. The experience of talking with them and bouncing ideas back and forth really gave me the confidence that I could do something big, too.” “Rotary is filled with great business leaders. Our members, who spend the weekend as counselors and give the students access to their knowledge, is where the magic really happens,” Shang says. He admits to spending years on the losing side of business, being a part of failed startups. He co-founded a successful company that buys and refurbishes shipping containers for office space, temporary housing, and storage. “My biggest message to the students is that it’s OK to fail. In all likelihood you will fail at some point,” says Shang. “As long as when you do, you learn from it, get back up, and keep trying.” One of the keys to the company’s success was setting core values. “Understanding and being committed to integrity with how we hire employees and interact with each other, our suppliers, and the community were important. We do all of this by strictly following The Four-Way Test,” he says.

The intensive camps, funded entirely by the Rotary Clubs and offered at no cost to participants, teach students team-building, leadership, and motivational skills. For 21 years, members of the Rotary Clubs of Mississauga have facilitated a Camp Enterprise as part of their vocational service. Streetsville Club member Doug Gerrard, the chair, says he hopes the camp leads students to want to create jobs after college, rather than just look for them. “I’d say most if not all of the students really don’t understand what business and entrepreneurship is all about,” says Doug. “This camp is an awakening for them. Around day two, you can see the lights go on in their heads, “this is what I want to do.” At the beginning of the retreat, participants are divided into teams of 6 to 8 students and asked to create their own business plans from scratch. Then they take part in teambuilding exercises to get to know each other so they can determine their roles within the business, including CEO, chief financial officer, marketing director, and human resources manager. Finally, they present their business plans to a panel of prominent entrepreneurs and venture capitalists from area firms. Camp counselors, mostly club members who are successful business owners themselves, mentor the teams. Students also meet one-on-one with mentors specific to their roles.

Camp Enterprise also presents business concepts according to Rotary’s Four-Way Test, which stimulates the learning of entrepreneurship as well as personal values, says Doug Gerrard. “Being successful in business doesn’t just mean making money,” he says. “We emphasize the development of skills necessary to not only succeed in business but also in functioning as contributing members of our society.” This article was edited from www.Rotary.org website, originally written by Ryan Hyland, December 1, 2014. For more information about the Nine Rotary Clubs in Mississauga, when and where they meet www.mississaugarotary. org

Some of the comments from past students “…one of the most valuable elements of the camp was when my team was asked to assign their own roles. Quickly evaluating teammates and assessing their strengths and weaknesses let him practice a skill I now uses at my own company.” “When we do our hiring, we make sure we really understand the core of who somebody is, instead of looking at just their résumé,” Being among likeminded students who had the same passion and interest in entrepreneurship added to the experience.

Reducing Nearsightedness in Children

Children are loving the Streetsville Hockey League

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

By Mark Trozzo Register for the 2015/2016 Hockey Season!

Finally some incredible weather! The snow pants are put away and we have come out of hibernation. And coincidentally, there is new research that shows the link between playing outdoors and your eyes.

Since its inception, the Streetsville Hockey League (SHL) has prided itself in being a league with options. Playing at the beautiful Streetsville Arena in the Vic Johnston Community Centre, families and players enjoy the small town atmosphere. Most importantly, players are enjoying the skill development and fun provided by coaches who are constantly improving their skills thanks in large part to the league’s affiliation with Frontline Hockey School.

For many years, people believed that children were ruining their eyes with computers and smartphone screens. Scientists say this is false!

Registration includes an NHL replica sweater, socks, team and individual picture, two tickets to a Mississauga Steelhead game, trophy and year-end banquet. For the players who want to play more, the Stingers and Sabres programs are offering more competitive hockey within the same vision of fun and teamwork. The Stingers is a Select program where players from the house league play in an additional league against other select teams from around the GTA. The Sabres are strictly tournament teams and are open to players who do not play in the Stinger program. This year, the SHL is proud to have run 8 teams between the Stingers and Sabres.

A number of recent studies show that spending more time outdoor, (about 14 hours a week) may help prevent or reduce the progression of nearsightedness in children. Children’s eyes are still growing between the ages of five and nine. Sometimes this growth causes the distance between the lens and the retina to lengthen, leading to nearsightedness. The proposed explanation is that the different types of outdoor light may help preserve the proper shape and length of the eye during that growth period.

The SHL is a non-tiered house league, meaning there are players of all skill levels and teams are mixed and balanced. With the SHL there is a set practice and game schedule for the entire season, which includes one practice and one game per week for 24 weeks.

If this is all it takes, let’s grab our basketballs and skipping ropes and enjoy another great reason to go outside!

There are limited spots available for registration, so make sure to sign up before it is too late. You can register online at www.streetsvillehockey.com. For more information about the SHL visit their website or email info@streetsvillehockey.com.

Silvia Yeomans is the owner of Queen Spectacle. Queen Spectacle has locations in Streetsville, Port Credit and The Kingsway. They are a Full Eye Care Team recognized for their service excellence. For more information visit their website, www.queenspectacle.com

Take Part in Our Streetsville Village Square this Spring and Summer By Lindsay Howe The completed Streetsville Village Square will soon be bustling with activity once again! While the square is beautiful all year round, the warmer spring weather always draws swarms of people from across the city to visit the heart of Streetsville. The town square is green and comfortable, with a beautifully landscaped street and pedestrian friendly sidewalks. Our celebrated Village Square is a focal point in the community. With all of the renovations and enhancements made, Streetsville’s central meeting place is equipped to host fitness, music, art and dance activities and programs. The renovated town square is also the perfect setting for different types of events including hosting weekend events and outdoor concerts, movie nights, yoga classes and more.

City Council has also approved new by-laws to accommodate activities and traffic during the events. These changes will help to transform the area and square into an accessible, barrier-free and people friendly space. Whether you live or work in the village, the Streetsville Village Square is the perfect setting to meet a friend, or enjoy some quiet time alone reading a book, or just take in your beautiful surroundings. After shopping the village, or enjoying a savoury meal at a local eatery, why not unwind in the comfortable setting of the Village Square? On the weekends the square is busy with community members enjoying a latte or ice cream on one of the benches surrounding the square. The square also sees steady activity during the week with people enjoying a relaxing lunch at one of the surrounding tables.

Additionally, the Streetsville Village Square will expand to include your favourite annual festivals and events including the Bread and Honey Festival, Canada Day and Remembrance Day. When Main Street is closed (between Church and Queen Street) during major events, the Village Square has a standing capacity of 3,000 people! The Streetsville Village Square Event Committee was recently formed to bring activity and entertainment to the square with community programs and events. This community-based committee is led by the Streetsville Business Improvement Area (BIA), and City of Mississauga staff. The committee also includes representatives from the Streetsville Legion, Main Street businesses, Peel Regional Police and the not-for-profit community base in Streetsville.

Failing to Plan is Planning to fail

TD Canada Trust

By Harold Johnson, CPA

Running a small business is hard enough

In our last article we discussed the idea of Trusted Advisor. Whether in business or personal life, we all need a Trusted Advisor. We need to have a go-to person or company that is there to provide us with advice that we need. What is important is that the value of the advice we receive has to outweigh its cost.

We can help

We offer businesses a range of innovative, specialized products and services. Our specially trained and dedicated Small Business Advisors are committed to helping you by:

A Trusted Advisor provides us with strategy and planning. We learn from our past, we live in today and need to be ready for tomorrow. Whether in business or personal life, we all need to plan. Successful planning sets out a goal and a course of action. If we have a Plan, as things change, the Plan changes. If we do not Plan, as changes happen, we have nothing to change. Not a good place to be.

Proper planning commits to paper. Whether by pen and pencil, or a Word document, setting your goals and writing out a plan is the first step. Secondly, plans work best when there is measurement and structured review. Our best Business Planning works with a quarterly review of what has happened, why it happened, what do we change, and what do we do in the next quarter. In some ways we act as a coach, a mentor and a strategist. We will set a goal and work towards it. The goals may change as situations change, but we have strategy. Why not carry out the same proven recipe in our personal lives? Whether we are in school, starting a job, starting a family, buying a home, raising a family, approaching retirement, or in our golden years, there is a need to plan.

Banking can be this comfortable ®

The TD logo and other trade-marks are the property of The Toronto-Dominion Bank.

It does not mean a completely structured life, never straying from the plan. What planning should do is help us anticipate the known and the unknown. The Trusted Advisor is of great value here. You know the known, the Trusted Advisor can help with the unknown. If your goal is to retire early, start the planning early. Want the kids to go to the best schools, start the plan for the future costs now. No one lives forever, so we should have a Will and an Estate Plan. These are life events that happen to all of us. What we need is advice on the “what ifs”. As Trusted Advisors that is where we can help. “What ifs” will happen. Being prepared should happen too! We are the Trusted Advisors to many clients. We know the role and we can make a difference. It is more than tax, more than accounting, it is life.

Taxing Issues Gordon O. Stockman, BComm., CPA, CA, CFP, CIM Vice President – Financial Planning, Efficient Wealth Management Inc. comply. We did so, knowing that, even after hours of additional work, we still only came up with good estimates.

Sharing Tax Information Around the Globe. There was a time, that when the only taxman you worried about was Canada Revenue Agency(CRA). Last year that changed. The United States taxes its citizens, residents and green-card holders (collectively, US persons) on their worldwide income, regardless of whether they live in the United States or not. It is the only country in the world to do so. The CRA, in contrast, only taxes persons resident in Canada.

It is important to ensure that this form is filed as required, as the penalties are very onerous! If you are using an accountant to do your taxes, make sure that this form is filed - you the taxpayer are ultimately responsible to ensure that your taxes are filed correctly, even when you are paying someone else to do them for you!

In search of that worldwide income, the US passed a very onerous law last year. The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) is a United States federal law that requires United States persons, including individuals who live outside the United States, to report their financial accounts held outside of the United States, and requires foreign financial institutions to report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about their U.S. clients. FATCA is an attempt to make it more difficult for U.S. taxpayers to conceal assets held in offshore accounts and shell corporations, and thus to recoup federal tax revenues.

Sharp Accounting Services Inc. is a subsidiary of Efficient Wealth Management Inc. It was formed to assist small corporations and investors in maximizing their tax planning, while controlling the cost of their bookkeeping and accounting.

Efficient Wealth Management Inc. was created to provide unbiased, independent, superior financial planning advice, on an Advice for a Fee basis. Our extended mission is to bring portfolio manager services bundled with full financial planning to investors with less than 1 million dollars. We have been designing and utilizing strategic ETF portfolios for over 12 years, letting us return control of the cost of financial planning and investment management to the investor.

US Persons Living In Canada If you’re a US person living in Canada, you’re generally required to file both a Canadian and a US income tax return. In the past, the IRS may have no idea where to even find you. Many US Persons living in Canada have little or no connection to the US. Their whereabouts, let alone their assets were not determinable, until now. The government of Canada has agreed to cooperate with this US law by promise of reciprocity. That is the US government will share with CRA knowledge about Canadians and their assets. US Persons can no longer ignore their requirements to file information with the US IRS and/or the US Treasury Department. Although there are several mechanisms in place to prevent double taxation, the many differences between the two tax systems can still lead to unexpected tax liabilities— for example, tax on capital gains or losses on the sale of capital property, exempt municipal bonds, income earned in a TFSA and RESP, and many others. In 2013, the US introduced a new Net Investment Income Tax which can create a US tax liability which cannot be offset with a foreign tax credit for Canadian taxes paid. Seniors drawing Social Security may now have taxes payable in the US, where before, when working they did not. Even if you are sure you have no income due, if you have a RRSP or a RRIF and most US Persons living here would, the only way to file the proper election in the US each year is to file a form that is part of the US tax return. In addition, financial assets in Canada above a small threshold require a reporting to the US Treasury Department.

T1135 Foreign Income Verification Statement Canada Revenue, in its wisdom, has decided that these US Persons’ financial assets reports to the US Treasury is are such a good idea that, they have increased the collection of data from Canadians about their assets outside of Canada. Since the mid 1990s, Canadians have had to file a declaration of their foreign property. On your personal tax return (corporate returns as well) you must answer the question “Did you own or hold foreign property at any time in the year with a total cost of more than CAN$100,000?” If the answer to this question is Yes, then form T1135 must be completed. Starting in 2013, the amount of information required on the form increased. In fact, we find the information even more detailed and harder to assemble than the US Persons report to the US Treasury. Canada has taken a good idea and turned it into a nightmare for compliance. There were some transitional rules in 2013, but some have been removed for 2014 and onward.

Considerable detailed information is now required. In the past, Taxpayers taxpayers and/or their tax return preparers never needed this information – it’s not in their files. Investment advisors never needed this information for their clients so the investment industry was only helpful on a spot basis in 2013 and the jury is still out that if all clients will receive the necessary help with the information in 2014. It will come as a surprise to most, the many of the assets that require reporting and the few that do not. Considerable work is needed to prepare this form and if you are using a tax preparer get ready for a larger fee. We are hopeful in 2014 that with the help of the investment community there will only be a slight increase in preparation work and thus small increases in the fees charged. In 2013, we surprised numerous clients with hundreds of dollars of unexpected fees trying to
