“I’m no architect, but I understand good design.” I may not own a drafting table but, when you’re living in this building, it’s easy to recognize good design. Thoughtful, well-designed spaces like a bright dining room, underground parking, comfortable gathering areas for friends and a hydrotherapy pool. Even the building’s small footprint is an advantage since it means every suite is close to the elevator. There’s no convenience I could want that isn’t within these four walls. Now that’s good planning.

The Heart of the Village By Deanne Clipperton

The Vic Johnston Community Centre is the heart of the Village of Streetsville and helps make the Village a special place to work and live. If you are ever looking for something to do, this is the place to be or to go to check out what is going on. This pillar of the community was built in 1961 and was driven to reality by a strong group of volunteers, who canvassed the residents of Streetsville to raise the money needed to cover the building costs. They came up a little short, but that did not stop them. The first group of board of directors, some of the original dreamers for the arena guaranteed the mortgage and the dream became a reality. The mortgage was paid off within two years. The Vic Johnston Community Centre needed some updates and was redeveloped in 2008. Again the Village of Streetsville came through and raised one million dollars in one year to refurbish its heart, the Vic Johnston Community Centre. Streetsville is the only community in Mississauga that has been able to fundraise that amount of money to support their community centre. The Village takes pride in the fact that the Vic Johnston Community Centre stands as one of the few independently not-for-profit arenas in Southern Ontario. As the heart of the Village the Vic Johnston Community Centre has and continues to be a hub of activity.

This year’s musical line-up looks amazing with The Mountain Lion Trappers and Fiddlestix performing live. Both groups have been favourites from previous Ceilidh’s but have never performed together, making this a recipe for a fantastic evening of entertainment and dancing. Mayor McCallion will be in attendance and will be piped in to address the crowd. Dinner will be served by the Lions Club, drinks are served by the Legion and the Rotary look after the Live and Silent auctions, that always seem to have something for everyone. Tickets are $50 per person and include admission, dinner and a chance to win marvellous door prizes. Don’t forget that all the money raised from the Ceilidh goes to kids in our community. There is no better way to spend a fall Saturday night. Come on out to the Ceilidh for a night of fun, friendship and fundraising! Get your tickets online at www.streetsvilleceilidh.com or by calling Ladner’s Clothiers at 905-826-2344 or The Vic Johnston Community Centre at 905-826-3011. Call or order today so that you will not miss out on this great evening! Leafs Alumni vs Mississauga Firefighters The Mississauga Firefighters will play the Toronto Maple Leaf Alumni Team in a charity hockey game on September 27th at 2:00 pm at the Vic Johnston Community Centre. There will be a special appearance by Johnny Bower and following the game, spectators will have an opportunity to meet and greet with some of the Leafs former greats. This game is being played in memory of Ron Faulkner. Tickets are $10 each and the proceeds from the game will benefit the Canadian Cancer Society.

SHL The Vic Johnston Community centre is home to the Streetsville Hockey League; the SHL, house league hockey …. just for the fun of it. Registration has begun for SHL’s upcoming season. The league is open to players from 5 to 17 years old. The upcoming season is fast approaching with opening day on October 4th. The SHL is one of Mississauga’s best kept secrets! Where else can you find a hockey league that has an onsite paid staff member dedicated to the league? Where the players have a set schedule offering one practice and one game per week at the same location with no gate fees? The SHL is dedicated to development for both players and coaches. Coaches are required to complete Hockey Canada level 1 and the Speak Out program. Once a month players participate in practices run by Front Line Hockey, a professional hockey school. Goalies are also provided with their own separate practice with Front Line once a month. Space is filling up quickly but they are currently looking for players born in 2006 and 2009. If you don’t want to be left out of the cold make sure to register today! You can register online at www.streetsvillehockey.com or by contacting John Culleton, Programs Manager VJCC/SHL at 905-826-2030.

The opening ceremonies will take place at 1:30 pm at which time a Streetsville Community Mural will be unveiled on the east wall of the arena. The mural will span 200 feet by 20 feet and will cover the east wall with black and white photos depicting the history of Streetsville dating back to the early 1960’s. Don’t miss this special event and be one of the first to view this amazing piece of history! Tickets are available at the Vic Johnston Community Centre 335 Church St. Mississauga or by contacting Greg Williams at gwilliamshockey@gmail.com. Streetsville Tigers Hockey Club Celebrates 20 years with GTHL This year the Streetsville Tigers Hockey Club will celebrate 20 years with the GTHL (Greater Toronto Hockey League). The Streetsville Tigers hockey club has played in various leagues between 1946 and 1994/95. At that time the board of directors decided to move to the GTHL to provide the Tigers with opportunities to play more competitive hockey and to improve recruitment opportunities. On September 28th the Tigers will begin their 20th season with the GTHL by having all nine teams play their home openers back to back at the Vic Johnston Community Centre beginning at 10 am with the Minor Atom team starting it off. The anniversary will be marked with the Opening Ceremonies being held at 1 pm just prior to the Tigers Pee Wee game.

In conjunction with the SHL, two development programs have been created to provide children from 4 to 6 years of age with an opportunity to work on skating and hockey skills that will assist them when they want to join the SHL. For more information on the learn to skate and the stick and puck programs please contact John Culleton, Programs Manager VJCC/SHL at 905-826-2030. Ceilidh (Kay-lee) the Place to be The 2014 Ceilidh will take place on Saturday, September 20th at 6pm at the Vic Johnston Community Centre. What is a Ceilidh you ask? Well, as defined by the dictionary it is a social gathering, also known as a party, with live music and dancing. Really, it should just say a great evening to go out and have a great time with friends while supporting the community. Following the redevelopment of the Vic Johnston Community Centre, there was a lot of energy and excitement about what the community had come together to accomplish. Members of volunteer groups in the Streetsville community; the Legion, Lions Club, Rotary and the Vic Johnston Community Centre executive wanted to keep the spirit alive. They created an annual fundraising event to benefit kids in our own community, hosted in the redeveloped heart of the Village, the Vic Johnston Community Centre. Thus the Streetsville Ceilidh was born.

The President of the GTHL John Gardner will be in attendance at the Opening Ceremonies to help the Tigers celebrate. The day will offer entertainment, player give-a-way’s, a barbeque, facing painting, table top hockey and more. Come down to the Community Centre to support the Tigers and enjoy the day at the rink.

So for something to do, come down to the Vic Johnston Community Centre , the heart of the Village!

To date the Ceilidh has raised more than $60,000 for the four organizing clubs favourite charities! Everyone is invited to attend this charity fundraiser and enjoy a fun-filled evening of entertainment and fabulous food. Julie expresses her excitement for the upcoming event stating: “I am so excited for the 2014 Streetsville Ceilidh. I’m very pleased to remain as Chair of the event again this year. Each year my amazing committee puts in so many volunteer hours to make this event a success and without each of them we wouldn’t be able to continue to raise money for the kids in our local community.” The Streetsville Ceilidh board members wanted to do something a little extra this year to promote the event and raise additional money for charity. Now you can get your very own Men in Kilts calendar featuring some of Streetsville’s finest businessmen posing in kilts. Have a Spooktacular Halloween

Tired of Wearing Eyeglasses? By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

By Lindsay Howe

Some people come in to our shops and are leery of talking about their “curiosity” of laser surgery. They think because we sell eyeglasses and contact lenses, that we are against the whole procedure. The truth is that we’re not! And, you have more options than you think.

The Countdown to Streetsville’s Annual Halloween Event Begins! With the fall season upon us, Halloween is just around the corner! Streetsville’s fun filled Halloween event Spooktacular is happening on Saturday, October 25th from 2 – 4 p.m. at Vic Johnston Community Centre. The Banquet Hall will be decked out in Halloween decorations, and set up with various fun and interactive activities. From spooky, to silly, to artsy, children will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities that will put them in the Halloween spirit! Spooktacular festivities include: crafts, face painting, story time, balloon animals, music time and more.

The most common procedure is Lasik surgery and is used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Lasik is a procedure that reshapes the cornea to allow light to properly focus on the retina for clearer vision. In most cases, the procedure is pain-free and improves vision without the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. You can speak to your eye doctor. He or she will perform a thorough eye exam to ensure your eyes are healthy enough for the procedure. They will evaluate the shape and thickness of your cornea, pupil size, your refractive needs (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) and any other eye conditions that may be present.

Spooktacular is always a huge hit with local children and their families. This community focused event gives the village businesses an opportunity to give back to the community, and provide an afternoon of Halloween fun for local families. Complimentary loot bags filled with yummy treats and surprises will be handed out to the first 300 children to take home and enjoy. The loot bag items are generous donations from local business owners who love to see the joy and excitement on the children’s faces at Spooktacular.

Laser eye surgery offers many benefits and can dramatically improve your quality of life. Most people achieve 20/20 vision or better after the surgery, but results vary. Some people may only achieve 20/40 vision or less and still need to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. But your prescription after surgery is typically lower than it was before surgery. Some complications still may occur and might include halos, starbursts or infections. The halos and starbursts are more noticeable at night with driving (with street lights and headlights).

Children can explore their creativity at the various craft stations set up throughout the room. Crafts range from making jewelry, to play-dough sculptures, painting, colouring and other fun surprises. Spooktacular’s library activities and music time is also very popular among the children in attendance. The children love sitting in for Story Time and listening to silly and spooky Halloween tales, brought to you by The Streetsville Library.

Post Lasik, you may still need reading glasses once you reach your 40s, due to a normal age-related loss of near vision (presbyopia).

While Spooktacular is a free event, the Streetsville BIA asks that families bring non-perishable food items for the Eden Community Food Bank. Last year an exceptional 277 pounds of food and $286 in donations was collected for the food bank. This year the goal is to raise even more!

If you are still unsure whether the procedure is for you, there is another option called Orthokeratology. Orthokeratology involve contact lenses that you put in before bed and take out in the morning. The hard type lenses known as CRT (Corrective Retinal Therapy) lenses reshape the cornea. Some people sleep with them in their eyes every night, others every other night. Depending on the prescription, the prescription will be reduced either by 50-60 percent by the next day or even 80 to 90 percent by the next day. The contact lenses correct the power in the eye for 24 to 48 hours (depending on the individual). Children and teenagers can wear the CRT lenses at night and it even appears to stop the progression of nearsightedness as they grow. Optometrists say Corrective Retinal Therapy are for people with low to moderate nearsightedness, as well as low amounts of farsightedness.

Bring your children out to Spooktacular this year so they can explore the various creative and interactive activities offered. This fun filled event caters to younger children (ages 3-8). Throw on your Halloween costume and come out to Spooktacular 2014. Don’t forget to bring your non-perishable food donations for the Food Bank! A special thanks to the Streetsville BIA for their dedication and support to make Spooktacular Streetsville’s annual Halloween celebration. For more information, visit www.villageofstreetsville.com. Contact the Streetsville BIA at info@villageofstreetsville.com or call 905-858-5974.

Is either of these for you? Possibly. You need to speak with your eye care professional first to see whether you are a candidate. Regardless, eyeglasses are still stylish and fun. If your only alternative is eyeglasses, make it playful, make it sophisticated, do as you desire. Your options are endless! If you have any questions or would like me to write about a specific topic, email me at silvia@queenspectacle.com. Silvia Yeomans is the owner of Queen Spectacle. Queen Spectacle has locations in Streetsville, Port Credit and The Kingsway. They are a Full Eye Care Team recognized for their service excellence. Go from Flab to Fab this Fall By Crystal Mallari

Are you one of many who went from “bikini bod” to “bulging belly” this summer? You, my friend, have lost the “battle of the bulge”. It’s a frustrating place to be parked, so read the following 4 steps to get your body back into results mode this fall.

The quickest and most permanent way to fight flab this fall is through a combination of healthy eating and CONSISTENT, challenging workouts.

STEP #1: Reduce Sugar. A very effective way to restart your results is to reel in your sugar intake. Inspect all of your food for added sugars and eliminate items that contain high calorie sweeteners. This means no sugar, corn syrup, honey or maple sugar.

You deserve that fit and attractive bikini body, ALL YEAR ROUND! And R3VOLVE BOOT CAMP can help you get it! The fitness program and nutrition guidelines of this boot camp is designed to keep your body guessing, to maximize every muscle in your body in a short period of time and to help you achieve your personal, fitness goals. You’ll lose unwanted body fat, gain strength, sleep better, increase your endurance and have a BLAST doing it!

STEP #2: Get More Sleep. Adjust your sleeping schedule to hit the bed by 10 pm. Every hour after 10 pm is like your losing 2 hours of “good” sleep. Do you best to get at least 7 hours of sleep. If you’re not getting adequate amounts of rest, you’re more likely to be hungry, overeat, and gain weight. Sleep deprivation causes your metabolism to slow down, slowing or reversing your results. Make sleep a priority.

ALL FITNESS LEVELS WELCOME. Whether you are beginner or an avid exerciser, you will be challenged to do “your best...THAT’S ALL.”

STEP #3: Drink Only Water. To restart your results you’ll need to make some changes. If you’re one of the millions who consumed too much alcohol, pop, beer or wine this summer, then your belly fat will stay locked in place until you replace these drinks with water. Don’t confuse dehydration with hunger. So at the first sign on hunger, don’t grab a snack or calorie-filled drink. Instead, drink a glass of water.

THE KEY TO BEGINNING AND MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BODY IS A COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS YOU! You will be guided by fitness and health professionals who are available at your fingertips. How? Our R3 Evolution Community Face Book Fan Page is the opportunity to report your progress, ask questions and get the support from the R3 coaches and peers.

STEP #4: Increase Exercise Intensity. If you want to get back on track with your body transformation, increase the amount and intensity of your exercise routine. This is the most difficult lifestyle change of all, but the benefits are worth it! Try to get at least 30 to 60 minutes of intense exercise 2 – 3 times per week. When exercise is a normal part of your everyday routine, you’re more likely to stick with it, and your body will become slimmer and more toned.

FREE Boot Camp Demo classes on: MORNING SESSION, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th at 9:30 am. EVENING SESSIONS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd at 6:15 pm AND FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th at 6:30 pm. RESERVE YOUR SPOT IN THE DEMO CLASS BY EMAILING (please indicate if you will be bringing any guests): r3evolutionfitnessstudio@gmail.com or call 416-877-0361.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY Today’s decisions could cost tomorrow By Richard Blake, BA, CFP, CLU Every day, Canadians are faced with spend versus save decisions that will have an eventual impact on their future financial life and the quality of their retirements years. Here’s the dilemma in a nutshell: “I know I should save for my retirement but that new big screen LED TV is on sale for a great price and it would be a terrific upgrade for our family room.”

Ladner’s is pleased to introduce Fall 2014!

Sure, it’s difficult to think about a distant future plan (something intangible that is way down the road) when you can get something you want today, this is why many people don’t set realistic goals. But, in this case the solution seems obvious: Stay with the perfectly serviceable TV you’ve already paid for and put the money you would have spent on the new one into a retirement fund (or some other investment). Simple, right? But there’s much more to effective financial planning than investing in investments held within an RRSP or other savings vehicle. While it is undeniably true that the earlier you start saving, the better – especially within a tax-reducing, tax sheltered RRSP where the magic of compounding will enhance your investment growth over time – the first thing you need to know is what you are saving for. In other words, you can’t measure a future need without knowing what the need will be. So start by carefully defining your objectives – some are straightforward, like you desire to buy a larger home at some future date; others require much more thought, like looking at your retirement from every angle and defining the level and duration of finances you will eventually need to achieve you dreams. Once you’ve made you calculations, it’s time to decide on how and how much you should invest to reach your objectives. And now things become even more complex: • What happens if the amount you think is adequate gets eaten up by an inflation level that escalates sometime in the future? • What if your choices of investments do not provide the levels of returns you will one day need – because the returns have been reduced by market volatility or an unexpected economic downturn? • What if your income – and thus, your ability to save – is affected by ill health, a workplace accident, a sudden unexpected expense, or even job loss? But don’t be deterred – there are answers to all these questions, ranging from effective investment diversification strategy to insurance coverages that will protect you, your family, your income and your estate. Yes, comprehensive financial planning is complex – and also vital. Make the right decisions today and for your future by talking you your professional advisor. This column, written and published by Investors Group Financial Services Inc. (in Quebec – a Financial Services Firm), and Investors Group Securities Inc. (in Quebec, a firm in Financial Planning) presents general information only and is not a solicitation to buy or sell any investments. The Shop for all Reasons Celebrates 25 Years By Lindsay Howe

The Shop For All Reasons is a specialty gift boutique, centrally located in the heart of Streetsville. John and Loretta Viola have owned and operated The Shop For All Reasons for just over half of the 25 years the boutique has been in business. Celebrations for The Shop For All Reasons’ 25th Anniversary will be happening throughout September and October, with special events happening every weekend. Events range from jewellery shows, to popular seminars on tea, olive oils, chocolate and coffee! See The Shop For All Reasons website, Facebook, or see in store for more details.

While the store continues to grow and flourish, one thing that goes unchanged is the loyalty of their existing customers and the relationships they build with new customers. John and Loretta strive to achieve the utmost customer satisfaction. If they don’t have the item in, it can be ordered especially for you. The staff at The Shop For All Reasons is friendly, inviting and very knowledgeable about their products they carry. They take the time to help you pick out the perfect gift, and wrap it for you at no cost. Though John and Loretta are not originally from Streetsville, they have deep roots and a strong family history in the village. They have lived and worked in Streetsville for over 22 years, raising five children here. Loretta is related to the Graydon family, one of the founding families of the town. Meanwhile, part of John’s family owned a large farm in what is now part of Streetsville after WWII, with many members still living nearby. When it came time for John and Loretta to take over a business, Streetsville was a natural choice. The village has such a great small town atmosphere: wherever you go, you bump into friends, or meet friendly new neighbours. Even people visiting Streetville for the first time get a sense of Streetsville’s undeniable appeal, and this keeps them coming back. John speaks fondly of the village stating: “Streetsville is such a great community, filled with wonderful individuals. We really enjoy the small town atmosphere, and are privileged to consider our wonderful employees and many of our customers to be friends. We look forward to many more years of being part of Streetsville!” The Streetsville BIA congratulates John and Loretta Viola on this monumental anniversary and wishes The Shop For All Reasons another 25 successful years to come! The Walk-a-thon brought out over 75 participants from all ages and backgrounds. The walk consisted of a 2 km, 3 km, and 4 km path around Mississauga Road. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and funds for the children of sex slaves in red-light districts all across Asia. Amitabh Singh, co-founder and senior director at Mukti Volunteer Village, stated that “we need to break that cycle of poverty for these children and their families and the only feasible way to accomplish this is through educating the next generation of the children of the sex slaves.” Amitabh and his wife, Susan, first began this organization in Seattle, U.S.A. with their close family and friends. Streetsville Village Square is revealed! By Lindsay Howe

After much anticipation, the square is ready to be unveiled to the community. The brand new Streetsville Village Square is scheduled to open just in time for fall. Main Street is scheduled to re-open on September 15th. The community can once again gather in the heart of the village and take pleasure in our brand new, beautiful Streetsville Village Square. The square will be fresh and vibrant, the perfect spot on a sunny fall afternoon. Welcoming Back the Community: Celebrating the Square’s Renovation Come out on Saturday, September 13th to celebrate the unveiling of the new Streetsville Village Square. The Streetsville BIA and the City of Mississauga are working together to organize the event, with plans to host a fun-filled day for the entire family starting at 11am. You can enjoy live musical performances throughout the day and evening, buskers, clowns, children’s activities, free food and more. There will also be a ceremony lead by the Streetsville Legion and local cadets along with greetings from Mayor Hazel McCallion and others at 1pm on the stage. The day will be capped off by a spectacular night time performance by tenor Michael Ciufo sponsored by Goodfellas. Construction Work Done to the Square While having Main Street closed through the construction process may have been a hindrance for some residents and merchants, it was necessary in order for the various stages of the work to be completed. The amount of work that went into the square was very intensive and the Streetsville BIA thanks you for your patience during this time. The major work done to the square includes: · Upgrading electrical connections and potable water · Upgrading street and pedestrian level lighting · Integrating a sound system for site programming · Resurfacing and re-grading the street · Relocating and refurbishing the cenotaph · Installing street furnishings and a designated performance area. Benefits of the Newly Revitalized Square The vision for the square was to expand and revitalize Streetsville’s main public gathering space for community use. The Streetsville BIA and the City of Mississauga wanted a space that is functional and accessible; capable of hosting large community events. The new village square will draw more people to visit the village, which will increase tourism and business for local merchants. Throughout the changing seasons, the square will be the ideal setting for community members to gather and socialize with their friends and neighbours. The new community space is comfortable and pedestrian friendly. You can expect to see the square blooming with beautiful trees and budding flowers in the spring, giving the area a natural ambiance. This fall you will get a preview of some of the small and large events and activities that will be happening in the square next year. An official grand opening event will take place next spring, when the weather warms up and the square is in full swing. The BIA along with the City of Mississauga is currently working on a programming schedule for the first few months of operation. The updates and expansion allows for larger festivals and celebrations to take place in the square. Now you can enjoy your favourite celebrations and community events in the center of all the action. Events ranging from Canada Day, to Remembrance Day, to the Tree Lighting, and many more to come. The new Streetsville Village Square is the perfect setting for different types of events including hosting weekend markets, outdoor concerts, movie nights, yoga classes and local entertainers. Another bonus, the road can be closed for weekend functions and events to allow greater access to the square, and accommodate more people. If you have an idea of what you would like to see in the square, or if you would like to host or sponsor an event, contact the BIA office. For more information visit www. villageofstreetsville.com. You can contact the Streetsville BIA by phone at (905) 8585974 or email info@villageofstreetsville.com.

Holly’s Tips

Buy or sell first? If you’ve decided that your current home is no longer meeting your needs and it’s time to move to a different house, you need to decide what to do first: buy the new house or sell your current home. There are pros and cons to each approach. When it’s a buyer’s market (lots of homes for sale and few buyers), most people opt to sell first. This is a safe route to ensure you do not end up owning a new house and unable to sell your current home. The downside to selling first is finding just the right house you want during the time allowed. You may have to opt for a home that doesn’t quite meet your expectations. If you buy first in a buyer’s market, you may get a good price for your new house but you will face lots of financial pressure to sell as quickly as possible. It’s a good idea to consult your realtor to help make the decision- knowing market conditions in both the neighbourhood in which you are buying and, the community in which you are selling, is very important. Many other factors must also be considered such as interest rates and the time of year.

Value For Money Investing The Gratifying Harvest Journal Efficient Wealth Management has created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. We thought a column devoted to this pleasing idea would be great. What about, what we need?

pany has hundreds of advisors, even an estate and trust department. We are one local office and we were prepared and capable of doing one. Funny how, they did not offer to pay someone capable, reduce the monthly fees or of course suggest they go elsewhere with their investments. The second informed me that their large well known brokerage company’s advisor, did up a quick financial summary for them and said they had enough money and were fine. This without even being aware of the clients other assets held at other institutions. When asked about some estate planning, the advisor informed them (and I am paraphrasing from a second hand conversation), “Don’t bother. The people that do that for us are insurance advisors and you will just get a plan to buy insurance. You do not need any insurance!” Well at least they did not get sold some insurance they neither needed nor wanted. I am not sure I can sort out the advisor’s reasoning about no insurance though, since sometimes you want insurance for business, tax or estate planning purposes. It is not always needed but sometimes desired. It would also reduce the assets managed by the broker…hum!

Three times this week, I was reminded that financial planning is very misunderstood, by both households and investment professionals alike. Not only is it misunderstood, it can also be a challenge to obtain financial planning if investment professionals dismiss it as unnecessary or compromise it with a continued focus on product sales. When is the investment community going to realize that there is value in good financial planning? When they do, maybe, they will even learn what financial planning really is and how to deliver it in an unbiased fashion. Earlier this year, I was approached by two different prospective clients that were seeking some financial planning. I refused to help them. I thought I was doing them a favour by refusing their business. Both clearly needed financial, tax and estate planning, but since both had significant portfolios being managed by large investment firms, I suggested they go back to their investment advisors and obtain the services they needed. Fees are already too high across the industry and nothing is gained by paying twice to obtain the needed services, the advisors through their existing fees and then us for our time as well. In both cases these planning services were essential to do a proper job for these households, so we thought. It seemed right to send them back to whomever they were already paying substantial fees to.

Anyways, I can tell you that this client is very much in need of a complete comprehensive plan, given there is a small corporation, investments at multiple institutions, charitable giving plans, a diverse group of heirs and most important, a lack of comfort with how to deal with all the issues. Certainly, some education on why they are fine would have been an important start. Again, no offer to hire competent help, just the same high fees. O h did I forget to mention? They are also dual US citizens with assets that were in the US but were moved to the brokerage account recently. I wish you could see my head shaking!!

Recently, I saw them both again. This is what they told me. The first informed me that their large well known national provider, involved in mutual funds and private client services could not provide them with a comprehensive financial plan, since, they also had US citizenship and they were not familiar enough with the US tax and estate laws to adequately prepare one for them. Huh? The com-

Lastly, an ominous warning from the July 12th issue of The Economist under the subtitle Investing in Retirement. Stating, “What to do with your money when you retire…a question that fascinates the financial-services industry, which would love to get its hands on people’s retirement pots.” Furthermore, “A pot is not a pension…the vast majority…will try to convert their pots into income... on which they will struggle to get independent advice (many intermediaries get paid more for selling higher-charging products).” The Economist finished with, “…translates into a licence to print money for the financial industry. What people need is truly disinterested advice (columnist note - as in unbiased), so they can pick inexpensive, diversified products to keep them in old age”.

Village Market Report By Scott Brubacher

How do I find out about the current Real estate market?

vestment knowledge, and understanding of your real estate needs. Scott also is accredited senior’s friendly with the SRES (senior’s real estate specialist designation) Call Scott for more information! Stepping into his role as President of the Toronto Real Estate Board, Paul Etherington announced a strong increase in residential sales reported through the TorontoMLS system in June. Sales were up by 15.4 per cent year-over-year to 10,180 transactions. New listings were also up compared to the same period in 2013, but by a lesser annual rate. This means that competition between buyers increased in June.

The first question that many people ask me is how the market is doing. The question seems simple enough, the answer is there are many factors that make up the market, and it depends on your where you are looking. A good place to start is by reading through the Toronto Real Estate board market watch report. This report is published monthly by the board, and gives an overview of the housing market in the greater Toronto area. It describes influences in the local market and statistics that are important such as: Sales Volume, Average price, new listings, Active listings, Months of inventory, Average Days on market. It is important to see how the market trend is relative to the same month in the previous year.

“Home buyers in the Greater Toronto Area are confident in their ability to purchase and affordably pay for a home. Generally speaking, buyers feel that ownership housing will be a good investment over the long term. This is why we continued to see increases in home sales in June for all major home types across the GTA. Given the degree of pent-up demand in the market today, I would expect to see sales growth continue through the summer,” said Mr. Etherington. The average selling price for June transactions was $568,953, representing an increase of 7.4 per cent compared to June 2013. The strongest price increase for the GTA as a whole was for semi-detached houses, with the average price up by 9.7 per cent year-over-year. The pace of price growth for condominium apartments was also strong at 6.8 per cent.

Another great source for market information is the Royal LePage House price survey. This report is based on research and is published every quarter. It looks at the overall Canadian market followed by regional summaries. It describes the current factors that influence the markets, such as government policies such as interest rates, economy, jobs & house affordability and other things like global stability. The Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation has the Housing market outlook for regions of interest. This report describes both new home construction and existing home sales. This tends to be a more detailed report for the more analytical types.

“With less than two months of inventory in many parts of the GTA, it makes sense that we continued to experience very strong price growth in June. This is especially the case for low-rise home types like singles, semis and townhouses. Strong price growth for these home types will continue through the remainder of 2014. Despite higher inventory levels, the condominium apartment market segment has benefitted from enough buyer interest to result in above-inflation price growth,” said Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis.

Many banks publish reports that are easy to read and understand. The TD Bank for example has the TD Economics Housing report. The banks research engines grind out a summary of market trends and long term predictions. Finally your Realtor has firsthand and current knowledge of the Local Real Estate market and Neighborhood trends. This market knowledge is gained through local board membership, regularly working with buyers and sellers, listing and viewing homes for sale, monitoring sale prices, negotiating offers, and being in the know on local housing information. Realtors know house values by doing a Comparative Market Analysis to determine your home’s value, based on recent sales on your Street. Further Realtors develop knowledge through a work group of other professional vocations and trades associations. The variable factors affecting local neighborhood markets are: local business development, infill building, Municipal bylaws, zoning, conservation authority policy, political influences, infrastructure spending on schools, community centers, shopping plazas, hospitals, highway and transport systems such as GO transit. www.mississauga-realestate.com So in summary, to answer the question “How is the marketing doing?” is a process of education that is forever evolving. If you are thinking of buying or selling your home, Scott can provide you with knowledge of the local market, accurate property information, real estate in-

Family Fables - Courage!

By Deanne Clipperton

I thought that being a parent was supposed to get easier, I guess in some ways that may be true but not in others! I saw this quote from Elizabeth Stone years ago and have been thinking about it as I watch my children grow and become more independent. “Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” My youngest, Graydon, is starting kindergarten and will be at school every morning. Mckenzie is going to grade 1 and attending school all day for the first time and Nolan is starting grade 3 at the new school that he started last March. As a parent you are leaving them and your heart with someone else every day for the next ten months, with new peers, challenges and expectations; uncertainty is what lies ahead. Courage is the word that rings through my head, the ability to confront fear and uncertainty. We as parents have to have courage and enough of it to pass it on to our children or at the least the ability to fake it, feeling completely terrified inside while looking calm and courageous on the outside, so that our children can face new situations courageously and feel confident that we are there to support them in every way. Courage in all things is a hard skill to nurture in children. Nolan, my oldest is confident and courageous in physical challenges, this summer alone he has mastered waterskiing on one ski, jumping the wake on his wake board and tried surfing behind our new boat but when it comes to academics and reading or writing his courage and confidence seem to disappear and he afraid to even try. I think that all we can do to foster courage is teach our children that everything in life is not a sure thing, nor will it be easy but if they try and give it their best, then we will be proud of them and applaud their courage in every attempt. We as parents have to have the courage to let our children fail and get up and try again, all the while boosting their confidence so that they believe enough in themselves and have the courage to keep trying, even though your own heart is breaking a little with each attempt. I wish you the courage to be the best parent you can be in the next coming months!
