Our commitment to safety - All staff are first aid and CPR certified. Strict child to staff ratios are maintained through the booking process to ensure the safety of all children. Child care is set up to allow infants and younger children a safe place to crawl and toddle without the larger children around them. Staffing ratios are one staff member to six children (maximum up to two infants). Staff are only brought in if there are a minimum number of children pre-booked during the hours of operation. Booking - Peak times in child care are weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. It is recommended to pre-book with as much notice as possible. To guarantee a spot during non-peak times, a minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required. Child care accepts bookings up to one month in advance. Drop-in is permitted when ratios have not been met. Continuous bookings - Genesis Place has reserved a limited number of spaces during scheduled hours for adult patrons registered in a dry land or aquatic program. Patrons must provide their registration receipt for the program, and pay in full for the child care spots at the time of booking in order to reserve their space and access this service.

A 10–level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.
Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.
Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.
Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.
Level 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.
Level 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.
Level 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.
Level 9
This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.
Level 10
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Kids Connection preschool 2016/17 Ages 3 to 5
Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities including craft, special events, sharing, imaginative centre play, circle time, sensory table activities, field trips, letter and number identification, creative movement in the dance studio and games, sports and skill development in the gymnasium. Our programming allows children the opportunity to develop and use new talents, skills and interests that will assist them when they enter the school system. Early literacy and language skills are explored by combining calendar activities, name recognition activities, letter of the week program, special helpers and reading and listening centres. Themes related to the world around us offer many opportunities to learn about a variety of topics allow children to relate these ideas to their everyday life.
Social and emotional learning Social and emotional learning is explored daily in our classroom. Children have the opportunities to choose learning centres to play in with other classmates; sensory tables open up the chance to explore varied textures and materials while sharing the experience with their peers. This time is a fantastic time to discover how to share and empathize with others in the classroom.
Creative experiences Creative experiences occur regularly in our program. Unstructured art and craft times allow everyone the opportunity to try out new materials and let their imaginations soar. Our centres are designed to allow the children a chance to play creatively using their imaginations to create their own experiences.
Physical growth and skill development Physical growth and skill development are a huge part of our program. Physical literacy is the ability for children to learn the skills necessary for success in being active for life. It is as important to healthy growth and development as the ABC’s are important to literacy and learning for life. According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, being active can help young children maintain a healthy weight, improve movement skills, have fun, be happy, develop self-confidence and improve learning and attention. We focus on building those necessary skills such as hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, throwing and balancing.

Have you lost the love for your green cart? The green cart program has been running for two years now and some residents are finding they’ve lost the love for their green carts. Reignite the love and overcome the challenges with these helpful solutions.
Smell not so swell? Do you find your kitchen catcher or green cart is smelling? There’s a solution for that! Try these helpful ideas: • Sprinkle baking powder in your kitchen catcher and/or green cart • Line your green cart with newspaper/cardboard • Try a new style of kitchen catcher – there are many styles available in stores • Try a paper bag liner for your green carts • Washing your green cart with vinegar • Keep your contents frozen until organics collection day in the summer. • Keep your bin stored in a cool place out of the sun. • Leave your grass on the lawn or cut it the day or two before organics collection day.
Other Airdrie residents have had this same challenge and they’ve found creative ways around it, see their stories at airdrie.ca. Do you have a great solution to this green cart issue? Send it to us and we may feature it here.
Food somehow crept into your garbage? Have you gotten back into the habit of throwing food in the garbage? There’s a solution for that! Try these helpful ideas: • Do a garbage audit - part of our Waste Challenge • Keep your kitchen catcher right beside your garbage so you see it when you go to throw food away • Know before you throw- take time to know what can be accepted. • S tore your kitchen catcher in a convenient place that works for you such as using an attachment to store the kitchen catcher on your cupboard door. • H ave a system in place that makes taking out the organics easy. Place your green cart near a door you use often.

Not sure where to keep your green cart? Do you find your green cart too big? Can’t find a good place to store it? Although there isn’t a solution to make your green cart smaller, if you are having issues storing it, try these helpful tips. • Store your green cart in a cool, dry place that is out of the sun. However, the garage is not the best solution as it may make the green cart smell. The side of your house that doesn’t get much sun is a good option. • Store your green cart near a door you use often, so that it’s easy to use. • Partner with your neighbor and have a similar spot so that it’s not esthetically unpleasant. And maybe if you both don’t have a lot of organics, you can share a cart.
Other Airdrie residents have had this same problem and they’ve found creative ways around it, see their stories at airdrie.ca. Do you have a great solution to this green cart issue? Send it to us and we may feature it here.
