Genesis Place AQUATICS spring/summer 2013

A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.

Level 2

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.

Level 3

This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.

Level 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.

Level 5

This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.

Level 6

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), and introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.

Level 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres) and elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.

Level 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

Level 9

This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

Level 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Pool and classroom sessions are a part of this course, followed by the successful completion of assignments to receive their certification. Prerequisites: Must be 18 years old and hold a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor award that is expired. Please contact the aquatic programmer for more information at 403.948.8804 ext. 5507. 15166

Results of investing in preventive social programs Did you know that for every $1 invested in the community to help people gain life skills and learn how to make healthier lifestyle choices approximately $6 to $13 is saved in future policing, court, health and government subsidy costs? The City of Airdrie believes in supporting preventive social programs. The City partners with the Government of Alberta to fund preventive social programs to help people detect and manage early signs of social problems before they become crises. In fact, when we surveyed participants before and then after they attended these preventive social programs, they reported the following changes: • Moderate effect in increasing their self-esteem • Large effect in their gain of problem-solving skills • Moderate effect in reducing social isolation • Very large effect in increasing their social knowledge • Large effect in their gain of social skills • Moderate effect in their awareness of social issues • Large effect in changing their attitudes toward social issues • Moderate effect in enhancing their social connections To learn more about these preventive social programs and survey results, visit us online at airdrie.ca.

Small steps for a sustainable Airdrie The small things we do add up. Although it isn’t always easy to change the way we do things, our efforts make a positive impact on our community today and for tomorrow. The AirdrieONE Sustainability Plan, adopted by Council, outlines 10 common goals to guide our actions over the next five to 10 years as we create a more sustainable community, and ensure a high quality of life for today’s citizens and those to come. Each of us has a part to play in reaching our 10 common goals by the small steps we take. Here are some ways to make small changes that make a big difference.

Use water responsibly, it is our most precious resource • Install low flow toilets, showerheads and tap aerators in your home. • Fix all toilets and tap leaks. • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. • Keep a jug of water in the fridge for cold drinking water, rather than running the tap.

Save energy and money on your utility bill • Look for the ENERGY STAR® label when buying new appliances. • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature settings when you’re sleeping or away. • Use a power bar to turn off your electronics.

Power of the consumer • Use your buying power to support environmentallyresponsible businesses and products. • Shop locally whenever possible.

Getting around sustainably • Use the bus, a carpool, your bike, or your own two feet to get to work or school, rather than driving in your car alone. • Avoid unnecessary idling. If you’re stopped for more than 60 seconds – except in traffic – turn off the engine. For more sustainability information and tips visit airdrieone.ca.

Reduce waste bound for the landfill • Recycle as much as possible through Airdrie’s two recycling depots. • Purchase products with less packaging when shopping. • Try reusable shopping bags and containers, instead of disposable ones.

Assessment & Taxation Attention Property Owners 2013 annual assessment notices were mailed out to all property owners on January 28, 2013. There will be a 60 day review period which will end on March 29, 2013. The assessed value will reflect the value of property based on July 1, 2012 economic conditions, and its physical condition and characteristics as of December 31, 2012. The property assessment notices are mailed in advance of the property tax notices to allow owners the opportunity to review their assessments and raise any concerns they may have about their assessed value before taxes are calculated.

How do I know if my assessment is correct? You are encouraged to review your assessment during the 60 day review period. First, read your assessment notice carefully. Is your name, address and school support correct? Check the property classification (residential, farmland, non- residential). Does it correctly describe your property? Next, compare your assessment to the assessments of other properties similar in size, age, quality, condition and location available at airdrie.ca. If you have questions or concerns about the information on your notice, contact an assessor at 403.948.8855.

How is market value assessment determined? Market value means the amount a property might be worth if it is sold. The City of Airdrie values property based on provincial legislation and regulations. The purpose of the assessment is not to reflect a single sale price, but to assess all properties at typical market value on the same valuation date. It is important to realize that as assessment values increase or decrease, the tax rates will change accordingly. Taxation notices will be mailed on May 27, 2013. Property taxes are due June 28, 2013 (this deadline does not apply to the Monthly Tax Payment Plan customers). Taxes are for the January to December 2013 time frame. It is important that taxes are paid by the due date or they will be subject to a five per cent penalty on July 4, 2013 and a further nine per cent penalty on August 1, 2013.

Pay your taxes monthly If you would like to enroll in the Monthly Tax Payment Plan, please visit the City of Airdrie website at airdrie.ca to fill out an application form or call the taxation department at 403.948.8856.

Stay safe this summer The spring and summer months are a great time to spend time outdoors and participate in outdoor activities; however, outdoor fun, hot weather and increased road travel can lead to a greater number of injuries and deaths. Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) provides the following information for you to share with family, friends and co-workers to keep those around you safe throughout spring, summer and beyond.

• Climb carefully. Forty per cent of all playground injuries are related to climbing equipment. More children are injured falling off climbing equipment or horizontal ladders than anything else. • Children need to be supervised at the park or playground. • If your child’s playground is unsafe report the problems to the owner or operator.

Don’t be a distracted driver With increased road travel, driving safety is a big concern. Distracted driving is the leading cause of motor vehicle crashes and the number one distraction is cell phones. The use of a cell phone while driving is very high-risk and against the law! Please pull over in a safe location if you must use cell phones and other devices while on the road.

Park and playground safety Did you know each year more than 200,000 children visit hospital emergency rooms because of playground injuries? • Nearly 79 per cent of playground injuries are caused by falls to the ground. Wood chips, bark mulch, wood fibers, sand, pea gravel, shredded tires and rubber mats cushion falls well. Avoid playgrounds with concrete, grass and dirt, they’re too hard. • Swings should be set far enough away from other equipment so that children won’t be hit by a moving swing. Full-bucket seats are recommended for younger children. • Slides should be well-anchored, have firm handrails and good traction on the steps. One of the greatest dangers with slides occurs when drawstrings on children’s clothes get caught at the top of the slide. Watch what your child wears to the playground!

Summer heat Heat-related illness can become a risk when temperatures rise. It’s important to keep hydrated and rest frequently in shaded areas when in the heat. Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, and can contribute to dehydration and heat exhaustion. AFD offers suggestions to avoid heat-related illness during the summer:

93

 Golden Celebration

AIRDRIE & DISTRICT

• Keep hydrated by drinking water or sports drinks. • If you decide to drink an alcoholic or caffeinated beverage, be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after. • If you take any medication regularly, ask your doctor if you need to be extra cautious when outdoors in the sun and heat. Heat-related illness can affect anyone not used to hot weather, especially when it’s combined with high humidity. Symptoms of heat related illness include: • Severe thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting and sometimes diarrhea

Spring in Airdrie parks Pathway assessment The City of Airdrie has approximately 90 km of paved pathway great for taking walks or riding a bike. Maintaining the infrastructure of the pathway system is critical to having it last for many, many years. Starting in May the Parks department will be assessing the entire pathway system including the pedestrian bridges. If you see something along the pathway system that needs repair, please contact the Parks department at 403.948.8400 or visit airdrie.ca for more information.

Solar and wind turbine – first of its kind in Canada Chinook Winds Regional Park is a prime location for this incredible new technology. Beginning in May, the Parks department will be installing 10 solar and wind turbines on the southwest corner of the park. The purpose is to power the pathway lighting system and will be 100 per cent energy efficient with no utility cost to the City. Also at Chinook Winds four professional beach volleyball courts and more picnic areas around the splash park will be in place by August. Chinook Winds Regional Park is located at 2853 Chinook Winds Drive SW.

Jensen Park refresh The refresh of Jensen Park, located on land donated by the Jensen family, is a nod to Airdrie’s past. The western-theme playground and the historical gazebo are a great way to step back in time. Residents can take a walk through Airdrie’s history from the early railroad days, stagecoach days, Airdrie as a hamlet through to when it became a city. It’s a special place residents will really enjoy. Jensen Park is scheduled to open to the public mid-June. Jensen Park is located at 305 first avenue NE.

Springtime tree care – tips ‘n’ tricks for your backyard Trees and shrubs require a lot of energy to break buds in the spring. Most of the energy that they use to budout comes from reserved food that has been stored from previous season’s growth. For this reason, it’s best not to cause any unnecessary damage like pruning,

or accidental root damage turning over soil in nearby flower or vegetable gardens. A good rule of thumb is to “prune in June”. By this time leaves will have opened fully and be producing food quickly enough to deal with stressors like pruning wounds. Spring is a great time to fertilize trees and shrubs. Woody plants prefer a balanced slow release fertilizer, such as 20-20-20. Trees and shrubs also do better when they are not in competition with turf grass. Creating a mulched bed or tree well, will generally improve the health and look of your yard.

There is a Provincial Ban on all Elm tree pruning in effect Mar. 31 – Oct. 31 to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease (DED). This means it is illegal to prune any Elm tree from April 1 – September 30. It is also illegal to store or transport elm firewood. Any elm wood must be burned, buried, or finely chopped (chips must be less than 3 inches in diameter). If you are not sure if you have an Elm tree, please contact the Parks department at 403.948.8400.
