A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.
Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.
Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10 metre) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.
Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.
Level 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metre), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), and introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.
Level 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres) and elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.
Level 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.
Level 9
This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres) and breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.
Level 10
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Fitness services Fitness assessment Free: fitness profile
Are you meeting your fitness goals? How is your current fitness program contributing toward your overall health? A Genesis Place fitness professional can provide some insight into your current health and well-being with this complimentary one-on-one session. Each basic fitness test includes blood pressure screening, height and weight measurement and a flexibility and grip strength test. Using these results we offer suggestions to help you reach your goals.
Body composition A certified exercise physiologist (CEP) will perform a skin fold measurement test, which will accurately measure your current body composition and your body fat percentage. With this information you can track changes in your body composition as you progress through your fitness routine. This is a great starting point or progress measurement tool. You must be at least 16 years of age to have this appraisal. Cost: $30 for one test.
Watch for our 25 per cent off body composition test days! Call 403.948.8804 ext. 5517 to book an appointment.

Sport performance testing is an integral component to an athlete’s short and long-term development. But the wonderful guitar virtuoso Dennis Chang of Montreal has already been playing with some of the top names in the world of jazz guitar. What does it do? Airdrie FCSS provides funding support to local volunteerbased not-for-profit agencies delivering preventive social programs in our community.

Which programs are currently funded under Airdrie FCSS? The City funds several social programs that use volunteers to provide social supports to residents. Additionally, the City funds youth leadership and mentoring programs, family resources and educational counseling programs. For a full list of currently funded programs and their contact information please visit us online at www.airdrie.ca/social_planning/.

How much does the City of Airdrie contribute into preventive social programs? Generally, the City of Airdrie contributes more than its 20 per cent share into preventive social programs. This is because the City believes in the importance of enhancing the social well-being of residents.

Assessment & Taxation Attention Property Owners 2013 annual assessment notices will be mailed to all property owners on January 28, 2013. There will be a 60 day review period which will end on March 29, 2013. The assessed value will reflect the value of property based on July 1, 2012 economic conditions, and its physical condition and characteristics as of December 31, 2012. The property assessment notices are mailed in advance of the property tax notices to allow owners the opportunity to review their assessments and raise any concerns they may have about their assessed value before taxes are calculated.
How do I know if my assessment is correct? You are encouraged to review your assessment during the 60 day review period. First, read your assessment notice carefully. Is your name, address and school support correct? Check the property classification (residential, farmland, non- residential). Does it correctly describe your property? Next, compare your assessment to the assessments of other properties similar in size, age, quality, condition and location available at airdrie.ca/ airdriemap. If you have questions or concerns about the information on your notice, contact an assessor at 403.948.8855.
How is market value assessment determined? Market value means the amount a property might be worth if it is sold. The City of Airdrie values property based on provincial legislation and regulations. The purpose of the assessment is not to reflect a single sale price, but to assess all properties at typical market value on the same valuation date. It is important to realize that as assessment values increase or decrease, the tax rates will change accordingly. Taxation notices will be mailed on May 27, 2013. Property taxes are due June 28, 2013 (this deadline does not apply to the Monthly Tax Payment Plan customers). Taxes are for the January to December 2013 time frame. It is important that taxes are paid by the due date or they will be subject to a five percent penalty on July 4, 2013 and a further nine percent penalty on August 1, 2013.
Pay your taxes monthly If you would like to enroll in the Monthly Tax Payment Plan, please visit the City of Airdrie website at airdrie.ca/taxation/mtpp_ index.cfm to fill out an application form or call the taxation department at 403.948.8856.

Did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple fire safety tips and precautions you can prevent heating fires or carbon monoxide incidents from happening. • Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like a furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater. • Have a three-foot ‘kid-free zone’ around open fires and space heaters. • Never use your oven to heat your home. • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters. • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. • Ensure portable space heaters are plugged directly into an outlet and not an extension cord.
And ALWAYS, ALWAYS remember to check your smoke alarms!
81672_CoA In The City Guide.indd 88
Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless, colourless gas created when fuels, such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane, burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide. • Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For the best protection, interconnect all carbon monoxide alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height. • Test CO alarms at least once a month; replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow. • During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace are clear of snow build-up. .

Small steps for a sustainable Airdrie The small things we do add up. Although it isn’t always easy to change the way we do things, our efforts make a positive impact on our community today and for tomorrow. The AirdrieONE Sustainability Plan, adopted by council, outlines 10 common goals to guide our actions over the next five to 10 years as we create a more sustainable community, and ensure a high quality of life for today’s citizens and those to come. Each of us has a part to play in reaching our 10 common goals by the small steps we take. Here are some ways to make small changes that make a big difference.
Use water responsibly, it is our most precious resource • Install low flow toilets, showerheads and tap aerators in your home. • Fix all toilets and tap leaks. • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. • Keep a jug of water in the fridge for cold drinking water, rather than running the tap.
Save energy and money on your utility bill • Look for the ENERGY STAR® label when buying new appliances. • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature settings when you’re sleeping or away. • Use a power bar to turn off your electronics.
Power of the consumer • Use your buying power to support environmentallyresponsible businesses and products. • Shop locally whenever possible.
Getting around sustainably • Use the bus, a carpool, your bike, or your own two feet to get to work or school, rather than driving in your car alone. • Avoid unnecessary idling. If you’re stopped for more than 60 seconds – except in traffic – turn off the engine. For more sustainability information and tips visit airdrieone.ca.
Reduce waste bound for the landfill • Recycle as much as possible through Airdrie’s two recycling depots. • Purchase products with less packaging when shopping. • Try reusable shopping bags and containers, instead of disposable ones.

Winter in Airdrie Roads snow clearing 101 The City of Airdrie Public Works Department has a dedicated team of Snow Fighters who work around the clock in plow trucks, graders and front end loaders to keep our roads as safe as possible. We are committed to providing the highest level of service in the shortest possible time, at the lowest cost. The City of Airdrie owns and monitors two Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS). Crews can respond to a snow storm before a snowflake even hits the ground. Anti-icing materials are used and will be applied if air and pavement temperatures are appropriate for the product to achieve the best results. Snow plowing begins when five cm of snow has accumulated, although it is not uncommon to see our equipment on the roads before this trigger. Airdrie’s roads are plowed on a priority basis with the highest volume roads first to be cleared.
PRIORITY FOUR- Local Roads (residential) • Shall be plowed if the road is rendered impassable or extenuating circumstances exist after the first 3 priorities have been met • At the direction of council Residential streets that are adversely affected are evaluated for plowing after the first three priorities had been met, and again, if the street is adversely affected. Once identified, a single pass by a snow plow will be administered and as a result a windrow will be left behind. We try our best to move it where it will not affect parking or driveways.
Visit airdrie.ca or follow us on Twitter @city_of_airdrie for all the latest updates throughout the winter on changing weather conditions and our progress.
PRIORITY ONE – Arterial Roadways • Major roadways in Airdrie such as Yankee Valley and 8th Street • Emergency Services facilities such as Fire Halls, RCMP • Snow is plowed to boulevard or curb as space permits • Arterial Roads are to be cleared within 24 hours once the snow stops falling
PRIORITY TWO - Collector Roadways • Major residential feeder roads such as Allen Street, Woodside Boulevard, Reunion Gateway, Meadowlark Road • Snow is plowed to the boulevard or parking lane • Intersections are opened up as soon as possible • Bus routes • Collector Roads are to be cleared within 48 hours once the snow stops falling
Enjoying parks in the winter Plowing sidewalks and pathways The Parks Department is as busy in the winter as they are in the summer. The Parks Team is responsible for the maintenance of the public path system year-round including snow plowing of over 80 km of pathways and sidewalks, as well as assigned bus stops. These areas are kept clear of snow and ice for the safety of Airdrie residents. The Parks Department converts six small mowers into snowplows and one large mower into a blower unit for snow removal. Crews work seven days a week and are on the job at 6 a.m. every day to determine if there is sufficient snow to plow. On the weekend, most major routes receive priority for snow plowing.
For more information visit airdrie.ca.
PRIORITY THREE – City Facilities • Arena parking lots • Parks Parking lots
