Floor to Area Ratio (FAR) is the ratio of the total floor area of building(s) to the area of land on a parcel. It is a measure of the intensity of development, and in a sense is a representation of the built environment. FAR in this map was created by dividing the total square footage of each building segment provided by appraisal districts, by the square footage of each parcel polygon in the GIS layer. In some cases, especially in the downtown area, the appraisal district allocated the building square footage to one parcel, though a single building might cover surrounding parcels. The FAR may be overstated in these instances.
