all ages Minnesota Starwatch Program Hosted by Mike Lynch at the Blaine Wetland Sanctuary 11980 Lexington Avenue NE
Explore the Wetland Sanctuary An extensive boardwalk meanders through the wetland, allowing visitors to experience a serene and natural environment. The boardwalk extends from the trailhead on Lexington Avenue through both wetland and upland habitats connecting to East Lake Park. Future plans for the BWS include additional trails (exact locations are yet to be determined) and a nature pavilion at the Lexington Avenue trailhead. Management and restoration of the wetland site will continue into the future to accomplish the plan approved by the regulatory agencies. During spring and summer, crews apply pollinator friendly herbicides to control the invasive species which inhibit the growth of the native vegetation. Prescribed burns and over-seeding with native herbaceous species will allow the area to thrive and provide important habitat for birds, pollinators, and wildlife. The health of a wetland takes maintenance and care. The City of Blaine is committed to preserve this area for the enjoyment of the community now and into the future.
Friday September 27 7:30 - 9:30pm Make the stars your old friends and watch the great celestial show in the skies over Blaine. Get to know the constellations like The Big Bear, Cygnus the Swan, Pegasus the Winged Horse, and some of the great stories behind them. Use large reflecting telescopes, including two giant reflector telescopes that are among the biggest mobile scopes in Minnesota for close up views of Saturn, Jupiter, star clusters, galaxies, and other magic in the early autumn skies. Mike Lynch will also bring a telescope-astrophotography system to see really distant targets such as galaxies millions of light years away. Mike Lynch is a meteorologist at WCCO Radio and has been hosting star watch parties and teaching astronomy classes for over 48 years. He also writes a weekly stargazing column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and is the author of the book; “Stars, a Month by Month Tour of the Constellations.” The book will be available for purchase at a discount. Super cool glow in the dark star shirts will also be available for purchase. Even if it is cloudy you will learn a lot, have a great time and get a Mike Lynch “cloud check” for a future Minnesota Starwatch Class. James Bond: 50 Years of 007
The Star Wars Holiday Special
Celebrate the adventures of the world’s most famous spy in this class from North Metro TV’s Eric Houston. Using rarely seen film clips, photographs, and more, Eric will take you through the entire history of James Bond, from his literary origins to the most recent films. You will learn where the name James Bond came from, which Hollywood actor was originally cast to play Bond, and even hear the surprising words to the famous James Bond theme song. All of this will be for your eyes only during this great one hour mission with agent 007. Class held at North Metro TV, 12520 Polk Street NE. Max 20.
In this one hour class, North Metro TV Studio Manager Eric Houston will take you on a trip behind the scenes of one of the most bizarre television events of all time: The Star Wars Holiday Special. Aired only once the winter after the first Star Wars movie was released, this strange variety show featured all of the stars of Star Wars, including Mark Hammill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, alongside the likes of Bea Arthur, Art Carney, and Chewbacca’s family. There were songs, comedy sketches, cartoons, and more. And it was all terrible. This is your chance to hear the story of this failed experiment with rare footage of the special that George Lucas himself threatened to destroy with an ax. Class held at North Metro TV, 12520 Polk Street NE. Max 20.
