Winter Term 2021 Your staff magazine
I
hope that you managed to have some time off during half-term week and, if you did, you had a well-deserved rest. We know that we have a busy half-term ahead as we press ahead with the pace and ambition that will make 2021/22 a successful year for us. The weeks pass so quickly and often do not allow time to reflect and celebrate our achievements, but it is important that we remember all of the great successes and progress that we are making as a College, and the impact that we are having on our learners. It is great to see students going on visits, engaging in industry work placements, guest speakers coming into our College and events taking place again. We know that all of these provide great experiences and opportunities for our students, and they value these very much. As recently reported, the achievement rates for 2020/21 are being finalised and these are looking largely in-line with predictions: we hope these will show an increase from 2019/20 rates and we set our sights on further improvement during this academic year. This is due to everyone’s hard-work and commitment and everyone should be very proud of this achievement.
As we know, the Covid cases in Bristol are high at the moment, and we need to do all that we can to ensure that we protect each other. In line with other anchor institutions across Bristol we are encouraging everyone to wear a face-covering in busy communal areas of the College and at busy events, alongside the other precautions that we can all take. Our whole-College CPD day on 2 November provided a great opportunity for teams to meet together and focus on key aspects for the College, including sustainable development goals. It was wonderful to see teams together. I hope that you found the day useful and we will reflect on the feedback to enable us to improve further for our next event. Lots of staff, students and other stakeholders have fed into discussions about what our College values should be and how they should drive our behaviours and decision-making over the next few years. We will soon be in a position to confirm our new College values and start embedding these in everything that we do. This term we have a number of key events including our Construction Question Time and open events for school advisors, both on 11 November. We have our wonderful HE Gradation event taking place at Bristol Cathedral on 20 November. We have another Open Event on 30 November and a range of themed events taking place in the training restaurant. It is fantastic for our partners, stakeholders, students and their parents that we are again able to hold these ‘in person’ and I look forward to seeing many of you at these events. As always, please do feed your ideas and suggestions through to your line manager or the Executive Team.
Rich Harris Chief Executive and Acting Principal

#LoveOurColleges week
Congratulations Oliver!
City of Bristol College was sharing the love last week for #CollegesWeek, a national campaign to celebrate FE Colleges and highlight funding and political issues in Parliament.
An AAT Accounting apprentice working within the College’s Finance department was named a finalist in the South West Apprenticeship Awards 2021 for the Rising Star Award.
Throughout Colleges Week, the Marketing Team set up a stall at each centre with love heart lollies and sweets, ‘sweet pong’, inflatable hearts and a ‘wall of love’ for students and staff to participate in.
While not named the lucky winner, Oliver’s dedication to the College over the first two years of his studies, now completing his Level 4, is admirable and his nomination and being named a finalist is a huge achievement so congratulations!
For the wall of love, students were encouraged to say what they loved about College and answers included: the teachers, the freedom, facilities, the opportunity to learn and ‘the chance to be myself’.
Oliver has also been shortlists for the BristolLive and BathLive Apprenticeship Awards for the Outstanding Apprentice of the Year in Business, Administration and Financial Services sector.
The Marketing Team also shared some student success stories throughout the week.
Working in partnership with Barnsley College City of Bristol College is working in partnership on a new project with Barnsley College and five other providers on a pilot programme to improve professional development for further education workforce. Barnsley has received a government grant of £465,000 from the Department for Education’s FE Professional Development Grants pilot and will focus on strengthening staff’s skills and confidence in using technology to deliver education. Director of HROD, Jim Richardson, said: “City of Bristol College is delighted to be part of this program. Investing in our staff across the college and enabling them to develop professionally is a vitally important part of our people strategy; this project will enable us to provide great support to our new and experienced staff alike.” Read more about the project here. 3
The winner will be announced at a ceremony on Thursday 25 November.
Huge support for Afghanistan Refugees Crisis collection Staff and students from the College’s five Centres came together to collect donations for those displaced by the events in Afghanistan. Tables were set up at each centre to collect donations of warm clothes, socks, shoes, underwear, toiletries and nappies to be given to Bristol-based charity Aidbox, and the response was incredible. Read more about the success of the collection here.
BAME interns welcomed for month-long placement at College
Showing support for Black History Month and Show Racism the Red Card
Some of the College’s professional service departments welcomed interns for one month in September from UWE Bristol as part of a BAME intern initiative.
October saw the College mark Black History Month, an international campaign which celebrates the achievements of the Black community and a time to remember important events in the history of African diaspora.
The object of the initiative was to celebrate diversity within the College and at the local university partner and to give students from the university the opportunity to gain invaluable work experience in an area of their choosing. For the Marketing Team, this saw Kudzai Museve join the team and experience a range of different elements of Marketing day-to-day life, from supporting the grand opening of the Advanced Construction Skills to supporting with a press visit from ITV News West Country. Kudzai also starred in two of the College’s TikToks and supported with some vital product research which has made a monumental difference to the team. Sagal Ahmed - HROD Intern Nishat Apon - Estates Intern Temiloluwa Atanlusi - Finance Intern Sasha Chimbumu - Student Services Intern Kudzai Museve - Marketing Intern
City of Bristol College has marked this occasion in a number of ways, including setting up a Black History Month eLibrary, where staff and students can access a range of literature and biographies written by and about influential Black individuals. The information boards at each centre were also taken over with facts and history about Black History Month and the City Restaurant at College Green will play host to Jamaican Chef Neufville from Rice and Things in honour of the month. The College’s social media also played homage to the national campaign, Show Racism the Red Card, which called on students and staff to wear red on Friday 22 October to show their support for the campaign. Advanced Construction Skills Centre wins award The £9m Advanced Construction Skills Centre has been a hive of excitement since opening in September with full-time, part-time, adult learners and apprentices putting the new workshops to good use. The Centre, which was officially opened in September by Metro Mayor Dan Norris and Bristol South MP Karin Smyth, has seen success since opening, having been presented with the government’s Levelling Up Award for the Infrastructure for Opportunity goal. The Centre saw further success last week after winning the highly coveted Development of the Year Award at the Insider South West Property Awards 2021. The Advanced Construction Skills Centre has also been named a finalist in the Bristol Property Awards 2021 for Civic Development of the Year. The winners will be announced on 12 November. You can read all about the opening of the Advanced Construction Skills Centre here and about the recent award win here.
Cherry blossom planted in memory of construction technician City of Bristol College staff were joined by the family of John Williams as a weeping cherry blossom tree was planted at the Advanced Construction Skills Centre in September. John Williams, a long-standing technician at the College with more than 41 years’ service, sadly passed away earlier this year and in his memory, an intimate event made up of his family and colleagues was held at the Centre on Wednesday 29 September. Principal and Chief Executive Rich Harris and Construction Lecturer Wayne Coombs said a few words at the planting before the tree was placed in the ground. John was described as an avid football fan who supported Bristol City his whole life. He said football was his ‘passion’, making regular trips to Ashton Gate for match days and playing in five-a-side tournaments right up until his death. He was fondly remembered by his colleagues and family members. The tree can be found outside the Advanced Construction Skills Centre with a memorial plaque for anyone wishing to visit the site.

“I wanted to get hands-on and continue to develop my skills as thoroughly as I could and the traditional approach felt like a step backwards for me. I was familiar with the GDIM course at CoBC and its vocational, ‘down and dirty’ approach which better aligned with my way of learning.”

City of Bristol College
celebrates 25 years
C
ity of Bristol College Centres have been hives of activity this week as staff and students enjoyed some lunchtime fun to mark our 25th birthday.
Ashley Down, Parkway, the AEC, SBSA and finally College Green played host to the roadshow which featured free cake and sweets, music, games and a photobooth which both staff and students could participate in. The event was to recognise 25 years since the formation of City of Bristol College, after Brunel College merged with South Bristol College in 1996 and later merged with Soundwell College and smaller establishments such as the College of Care and Early Years Education.
9
Staff were gifted with a free goodie such as a sustainable and reusable tote bag or a recycled bamboo travel mug while students enjoyed some free sweets. Rebekah Wilkins said: “It has been wonderful to share this momentous occasion with our staff and students across our five centres. We had the opportunity to bring people together and celebrate 25 years of history and it was lovely to see so many people taking part in the games, grabbing some props and posing in the photobooth and feast on some birthday cake, which was kindly prepared by our brilliant Catering students at South Bristol Skills Academy and College Green.” Visitors to the event were able to stroll down memory lane and view photos from our 25-year history, with many passing comments on the technology and interesting clothing and hairstyles from the time.
“I started at City of Bristol College on the 1 April 1999 and I instantly fell in love with the College. It is a great place to study.” Slavica Talbot, Lecturer
“I’m an ex-City of Bristol College student and now work here. I started in 2005 and had a great time, and managed to get into drama school after leaving. It is good to see how it has developed and grown over the years.” Peter Kyriacou, Industry Placement Officer “When I got the job, I thought it was such a great job and the team I was working with were so amazing and they always have been. Now I am retiring and moving on and I am happy to have passed on everything to someone else who is really capable and has lots of industry experience.” Chris Rydlewski, Lecturer (retired)

Pay award for College staff
F
or a long time, the College has been unable to make a cross-college pay award, largely due to its financial problems and sector-wide funding issues.
Although we continue to face financial pressures (in common with the rest of the FE sector) and we expect 2021/22 to be another challenging year, we are beginning to see some signs of improvement in our position. In addition, while this year has been unlike any other, college staff have shown exceptional work, commitment and energy to tackle the difficulties which have been presented by it. On this basis, the College recently agreed a pay settlement with the UCU which has now been ratified by the Board of Governors and the College is therefore pleased to announce the following: College staff have received an immediate consolidated pay rise of 2.2%. This has been backdated to 1 August 2021 and colleagues saw this reflected in their October pay.
There will be an additional two college closure days, increasing the overall number of closure days to 10 for all staff. These will be detailed on the College Delivery Planner shortly. A firm commitment to work with the Unions to bring forward a hybrid working policy which applies equally to teaching and non-teaching staff, recognising the trust and confidence we have in our staff to work effectively from home as well as on College sites, where appropriate and in the best interests of our learners. This will be agreed and implemented by Christmas. A firm commitment to work collaboratively with the Unions in reviewing additional recognised reasons for remission from teaching hours and the agreed level of that remission. A commitment to work with the Unions to amend the agreed teaching hours for lecturing staff from the current 870 hours per year to 840 hours per year with details surrounding the implementation for this to be agreed between the College and the Unions over the course of this academic year.
Marketing
update
H 2022 entry.
aving quickly moved from 2021 entry, the focus of the Marketing Team moves swiftly to starting the recruitment process for
Events
The first half-term of the new academic year saw the arrival of not one but two highly successful open events – the first to take place face-to-face following the lockdowns. The team enjoyed meeting prospective students, with record numbers coming through the doors. Our open event on Saturday 9 October saw more than 1,000 students and their families attend across our five Centres and the A-Level open evening on 19 October saw around 300 students and their families attend. Thank you to everyone who has supported these recent events. Feedback for the event has so far been very positive and thank you to those who have taken the time to complete this. If you have not yet done so, please complete this quick survey so we can gather views and put these in place ready for the next event.
Graduation ceremonies The prestigious Higher Education Graduation Ceremony will return this year, following last year’s ceremony being cancelled due to the pandemic and a robing photoshoot being held in its place. The event will be rather different as we will not have some of the additions we have had in previous years by tagging onto UWE Bristol’s ceremonies, such as the marquee. The event will be held on Saturday 20 November at Bristol Cathedral on College Green. There will be a morning and an afternoon session to enable those who could not graduate last year to attend. Can you help? We need help with a range of roles on the day including ushers, meet and greet team and checking guest tickets. If you can, please email events@cityofbristol.ac.uk 15
Course Guides The new-look course guide for school leavers is receiving lots of attention and the new QR codes are giving us good information on what additional things prospective students are looking at. The HE guide will be completed soon, enabling us to have it in circulation earlier than ever. .
Website Please continue to tell us if anything is not correct or is missing on the website. The team try very hard to ensure information is accurate and continually improved, but nobody knows your offer as well as you. Email website@cityofbristol.ac.uk with any comments or amends you have.
Enrolment feedback from students Enrolment feedback from students has been positive this year, with 273 students rating the helpfulness of staff as ‘excellent’, a 13% increase on the 2019/20 academic year enrolment. The average time spent by student completing the face-to-face enrolment process was 30 minutes to one hour and those who completed their enrolment online said it was simple to do. The welcome week which took place around the sites ran smoothly and the Marketing and Student Services Teams will be looking at how to build upon this for future years to create a more enticing, freshers’ fair feel.
Tell us what is going on Are your students going on a visit, do you have a student with an interesting story to tell? We want to know. Email ellie.young@cityofbristol.ac.uk so we can cover this.
A poem from one of our students, shared by Helen De Beaufort.
‘The Moon’ by Keshy Kaur
I am the moon and I play a game, I don’t always look the same. Sometimes I’m a round silver sphere, Sometimes just half of me seems to be here. Sometimes I’m a crescent shaped like a smile, Sometimes I surprise you and hide for a while. Look up in the sky for my friendly light, what shape will I have? When you see me tonight.
