There are so many great things happening in Buckeye right now! City Hall and other city facilities are now open to conduct business or attend a meeting in-person, with limited capacity. This includes our libraries, Community Center, city parks, recreation programs, City Council and Boards and Commission meetings. Of course, you still have the option to do business or participate in meetings online too. We are also planning for the return of in-person events to resume within the next few months, including our annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Louis B. Hazelton Cemetery on May 31. And, you can count on a good-ol’ fashioned, all-American Fourth of July celebration in July. More details on both events coming soon. Nothing says family and community more than spending time at one of our city parks. I was thrilled to be part of the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase II
of Sundance Park back in April. Phase II will add 38 acres to the park and will feature amenities that you asked for during the public outreach process a few years ago. These include a splash pad, fishing lake, additional ramadas and playgrounds, lighted basketball courts and more lighted multi-use fields for both soccer and football. Construction should take about a year to complete. This summer also starts the beginning of the much-needed improvements to Interstate 10 from State Route 85 to Verrado Way. This project will have significant financial impacts to our local businesses with temporary closures to the on and off ramps at both Miller and Watson throughout the project. When construction begins, I encourage you to take a few extra minutes to shop at our local businesses as much as possible. Your support will help off-set any customers who might turn away because of construction. I look forward to more good things happening in 2021 - More retail businesses opening up, new employers relocating to Buckeye and the return of in-person special events that makes Buckeye a great place to live and raise your family.

Upon completion of a successful season, volunteer coaches will receive a $50.00 credit to use towards future City of Buckeye programs. So don’t wait...fill out your volunteer application now so you are ready to start right along with the team! To continue serving our community we need your help and support. The City of Buckeye is a proud provider of Starfish Swimming Lessons, a nationally recognized swim instruction curriculum! Starfish Swimming curriculum is designed for students’ ages 6 - months to adult. Benchmarks are established at each stage in the program that combine both swimming and safety skills. Students participate in experiential learning activities that allow them to explore the water in a creative and comfortable environment. Correct swimming techniques are taught from the very beginning, providing an easy transition to swim team. StarBabies™ (Adult and infant ages 6 – 18 months) and StarTots™ (Adult and infant ages 18 – 36 months) The purpose of these courses are to develop in very young children a high comfort level in the water while at the same time training the adults who accompany them in water safety. These courses do not teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water; it does provide a confidence-building, fun, and loving experience. One adult must be in the water with each child. Swim diapers required. Starfish Swim School ® for Preschoolers (Ages 3 – 5) Designed to meet the needs of children ages 3 to 5, this course will develop a high comfort level in the water and a readiness to swim, and for those children who are developmentally ready, it will teach functional swim skills. This class approaches teaching swimming through creative, fun activities in the water. Students work toward developing the five competencies and progress toward achieving the benchmarks at their own pace in a small-group setting. Starfish Swim School ® for Youth (Ages 6 – 12) Students work toward development of the five core swimming competencies using age-appropriate learning activities. Learning is self-paced but challenging. Starfish Swim School ® for Teens and Adults (Teens ages 13+ and Adults ages 18+) This course is designed to improve comfort and skill in the water, regardless of past swimming experience. Students work toward developing the five basic core swimming competencies using principles of adult learning Starfish Stroke School™ (This course is for students of all ages who have achieved the green Swim School benchmarks.) Students refine freestyle (White) and learn stroke technique for backstroke (Red), butterfly (Yellow), breaststroke (Blue), and develop endurance (Green). Swim Team Conditioning This course is for students ages 9-18 yrs who have achieved the green Swim School benchmarks, have been on our Buckeye Bullfrogs swim team or swim on a club team.

Construction to Begin on Sundance Park Phase II
Community Services is excited to announce that construction will begin on Sundance Park Phase II on 38 acres west of the existing park located at the southwest corner of Lower Buckeye Road and Rainbow Road. Residents can begin to see construction on the south side of Lower Buckeye Road in early April. Traffic is not expected to be impeded during park construction. The existing park, which opened in 2012, is a popular destination in Buckeye consisting of two softball fields, two youth baseball fields, a multi-use field, large playground, dog park, sand volley ball courts, and a perimeter walking path. Buckeye’s population growth and increased usage of the park predicated the need to expand on the additional land owned by the City. Phase II will include a 3.2 acre fishing lake, basketball courts, splash pad, playground, ramadas, restroom, lake pavilion, and lit multi-use sports fields for soccer and football. Other elements of the park will be constructed as funding allows in the future, including two additional soccer and football fields, multi-use path, and large pavilion to accommodate parties up to 250 people. Input from Buckeye residents heavily influenced the amenity selection. In 2017, over 2,300 residents completed a survey to provide input into the most desired amenities to build in the park. This was followed by two open houses on March 21st and April 24th, 2018 when residents voted for their priorities. The park will employ water recycling with potable water used at the splash pad draining into the lake. The lake water, in turn, will be used to irrigate turf fields. Construction of the improvements is expected to last a year. Be sure to check out future editions of the Eye on Buckeye for project updates. For more information, contact Robert Wisener, Administration and Project Manager at 623-349-6621 or rwisener@buckeyeaz.gov.
