Mayor Vera Calvin National Night Out Plaza in Old Town

The construction of the Mayor Vera Calvin Plaza in Old Town is an exciting development for the city of Burleson. The Plaza will be a shared space used to host multiple community events and honors Burleson’s only female mayor, Vera Calvin. “I believe it is not an exaggeration to say that Vera is responsible for the professionalization of the city of Burleson government,” Mayor Ken Shetter said at the Plaza’s groundbreaking ceremony. “To put it simply, after Vera Calvin was elected, government ran more smoothly and more professionally and we have never looked back. We will forever be in Vera’s debt for how she shepherded and stewarded this city.”

This year, Burleson hosted its National Night Out on Tuesday, October 1. Police officers, along with Mayor Ken Shetter, City Manager Bryan Langley and city employees from various departments, participated in this city-wide event. Neighborhoods join in the National Night Out effort to raise awareness about organizing and fighting back against crime. The event is designed to heighten crime

and drug prevention awareness; generate support and participation in anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and to let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. National Night Out helps bring back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Parks Crew Hosts Special Guest

Calvin stated, “I never dreamed we would be what we are now. It is a great honor to be here. This plaza is great and it was such an honor to be the mayor of this great city.” Burleson’s Economic Development Specialist, Drew Pennywell says of the Plaza’s future purpose, “The city’s hope is that the completed plaza will be a more formal, and capable, venue for the many community events and festivals that are hosted in the area as well as be a gathering space for our community on an informal basis.” Construction is expected completed in May 2020.

On September 20, the parks crew hosted a special guest, Blake. Blake is a 19-yearold young man with special needs, and he loves mowers. Blake came by to visit with the crews, see the equipment, and take a tour of the maintenance building. The parks crew lined up all types of equipment for him, and he had the opportunity to sit on each one and see how they operate and what all the buttons and

switches do. The crew had hats for him and a special shirt made for him with his name on it, and made him an honorary member of the mowing crew. A big thanks to Sgt. Brian O’Heren, Amy O’Heren, Ryan Nolting, Jeff Scott, David Rosenbam, Paul Upton, TJ Arthur, Kelly Nerios, Hugo Ramirez, Mark Rankin, Blake Lytle, Jay Blair and Manual Murillo.
