A Message from the City Manager Burleson Employees:

43 Year Service Award Shawn Kivela, CSA

20 Service Award Roger Hall, Police Sergeant

20 Year Service Award Karen Dawkins, Public Safety Communications Specialist

As we head into 2021, I want to take a moment to share with you my tremendous thanks and appreciation for all of your hard work during 2020. This past year has been truly remarkable and unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all of us both personally and professionally, and it has forced us to reconsider the way that we work, interact with the public, and provide customer service. Despite all of the obstacles, I am extremely proud of how each of you have risen to the challenge and continued to move our community forward. In particular, I have appreciated the innovative approach you have shown in providing services. We quickly responded to the challenges of the pandemic to alter our programming, make service adjustments, and help those in need. The innovative ideas you developed have truly made a difference in the lives of our residents during a difficult period. Throughout the pandemic, I have also been impressed with our ability to advance key projects despite all of the obstacles we encountered. In just the past year, we have completed a number of key initiatives including: • Completed the construction of the Mayor Vera Calvin Plaza in Old Town, • Activated the railroad quiet zone in Old Town,

15 Year Service Award Brad Schaefer, Police Officer

• Replaced the playground at Warren Park,

• Updated the City Comprehensive Plan which guides future development, • Created a public/private partnership to develop the Ellison Street corridor across from City Hall, and • Began the construction of Fire Station 16 on Hidden Creek Parkway. I have very much enjoyed serving as your City Manager this past year, and through it all, I have appreciated your dedication, sacrifice, and support. Without this, none of our success would have been possible. We have assembled a very strong team in Burleson, and with your continued support, I am confident that we will achieve even greater successes in the future. Thank you again for all of your service, and I wish all of you a safe and prosperous 2021! - Bryan Langley

GETTING TO KNOW RASHAUNDA

GETTING TO KNOW JESSE What motivates you in your job?

Finding solutions that make a difference in people’s lives. Eliminating mosquitoes and litter are good ways to do that.

What is your best customer service tip?

Always put yourself in your customer’s shoes. Something may seem routine and mundane to us, but could be a very

big deal to them.

Tell us your favorite customer service story.

Holding the Employee Cleanup Event last year was very rewarding. We got desk employees out of the office, cleaned up the city, and had free lunch donated!

What motivates you in your job?

Honestly in the beginning of my career, I was motivated to learn a field I’d never worked in before because it allowed me to work close to home and for the retirement benefits. I’ve always enjoyed working with the public and have come to realize over the past 20+ years of being a permit tech just how much I love making a difference in the community. There are always improvements & changes being made within building codes, so whether it’s coming up with solutions or learning something new myself, I enjoy helping others. I’m usually the first point of contact in my department, which gives me the opportunity to help solve difficult situations or answer questions by educating others with the knowledge and safety as to why permits, inspections and codes are needed.

What is your best customer service tip?

I know it sounds very cliché, but I try my best to treat others how I’d want to be treated. I also try to learn something

about the person I interact with. I genuinely have met some of the most interesting people in my career with the city, who thankfully I call my friends.

Tell us your favorite customer service story.

I’m not one to really toot my own horn, I just do my job and always try to do my best. It’s just an added bonus when you can make someone’s day better. I will however say there are multiple tasks our department handles on a daily basis that are very time-sensitive or that make a difference (i.e. helping people with medical issues/disabilities, assisting the elderly or those with small children, or saving businesses money and time when there is an interruption in operations, etc.). An example of this would be when a resident or business needs their permit, inspection scheduled, or assistance between other city departments or other entities (Oncor, Atmos, etc.) to get issues resolved so they can have heat, water, or electricity.
