Parks & Recreation Department
Pre-registration is required for all recreation programs unless otherwise listed and all fees are due at the time of registration. Please note the deadline for all programs is 3 days prior to the start of the class. All programs require a minimum number of registrants in order to operate. Programs will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Each program fee is listed in the brochure, and additional supplies might be required if noted. Cash, check, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) are accepted.

You’ll need to create an account to use it, but don’t worry! With a couple of clicks and a few taps of the keyboard, you’ll be set up and ready to enjoy the convenience of online registration. The Alan E. Sims Cedar Hill Recreation Center is the perfect place to maintain your healthy lifestyle in our fitness area, learn something new participating in one of our programs, host a special event in one of our multipurpose room rentals or play a game of basketball with your family and friends. Memberships are available to both Cedar Hill residents and non-residents at the same rate. Each membership includes:
With over 5,400 square feet available for rent, the Alan E. Sims Cedar Hill Recreation Center is ideal for meetings, receptions, birthday parties and weddings. Guests have the option of using the entire space or splitting it up into 4 separate rooms.

Access to state-of-the-art fitness equipment including three-lane walking/jogging track, a variety of cardio and strength machines, free weights and much more. (free fitness orientation available). Two full size gymnasiums. Game room including table tennis, foosball, air hockey, pool table and gaming systems. Onsite childcare 6 mo to 6 yrs in our barnyard room (Included in annual membership fee, or $20/10 visits, $4/per child, per visit). SENIOR PROGRAMS The Cedar Hill Senior Center services active seniors, age 50 and older, through planned programs, activities, and trips. Participants are offered enriching opportunities in a safe, fulfilling environment. Memberships to the center are FREE of charge and can be completed at the Senior Center. All programs are held weekly at the Senior Center, and registration is required for designated programs (up to 40 participants). Digital items such as eBooks, movies, audiobooks and magazines are also available for checkout. Research and educational databases including Lynda.com are free of charge with your library card.

Outdoor Music & Discovery Garden
The Traphene Hickman Outdoor Music and Discovery Garden is an interactive play area adjacent to the library which allows individuals of all ages to explore a musical experience while affording children the benefits of outdoor play and music.

YOUTH LIBRARY PROGRAMS Children Storytime Sessions: Baby Storytime - Mondays at 10:30 am. Babies 0-36 months are invited to enjoy an engaging session of songs, movement and stories to develop the motor, social and pre-literacy skills for this age all while having fun! This class will be combined with our Family Place Playgroups during the following sessions: October 7, 14, 21, 28 and November 4. In addition to our storytime activities, our Family Place Playgroup includes opportunities for parents and caregivers to engage with Community Resource Professionals to learn about resources and understand their role as their child’s first teacher. Siblings up to age 5 are also invited to these sessions. Preschool Storytime - Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Designed for children ages 3-6, this fun and engaging class will help preschoolers develop all important literacy skills. Songs, fingerplays and after storytime activities will focus on the skills needed for the first year of kindergarten. Toddler Storytime - Fridays at 10:30 am. Stories, dance and action rhymes will engage toddlers ages 2-3 in developing pre-reading skills in this fun and active storytime class.
Stuffed Animal Sleepover October 18 & 19 Wonder what happens at the library after everyone goes home? We are going to find out! Drop off your stuffed animal at the library children’s desk between 3-6 pm on Friday, October 18. On Saturday, October 19 at 10:30 am come back to see what adventures the security cameras caught your stuffed animal engaged in! A slide show, stories, and donuts and juice will be served.
Bilingual Storytime - Join us for a Hispanic Heritage Month Storytime “Fiesta” September 21 at 10:30 am. Stories in English and Spanish followed by a fun activity! Noon Year’s Eve Storytime - December 31 at 11 am. Join us for a very special storytime for the kiddos to ring in the New Year! Enjoy stories, activities, dancing, snacks and big celebration as we count down to NOON!
Ongoing Activities: Youth Tellers - Children in grades 3-6 are invited to learn the art of storytelling every Thursday at 5 pm. Homework Help - Children in grades 3-6 can receive guided assistance with homework every Wednesday at 5 pm. Fall session begins October 2. Sessions are facilitated by a certified teacher. Space is limited. Register weekly by calling (972) 291-7323 ext. 1305. Paws & Reading Tutors - 2nd Saturday of every month at 1:30 pm. Children of all ages are invited to read with trained therapy dogs from Therapy Dogs International and Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
Thanksgiving Break Activities (ages 3-12) Craft Day-Monday, November 25, 1 pm Craft day. Join us in creating something fun and creative for the holiday. Legos in the Library-Tuesday, November 26, 1 pm Join our Lego challenge! Board Games-Wednedsday, November 27, 1 pm We’ll have a variety of popular board games set up for play in the library. ADULT LIBRARY PROGRAMS Adult Ongoing Programs Readers on the Hill Book Club - Every 1st Monday at 7 pm, October 7, November 4 and December 2. Dallas Area Writers Group (DAWG) - Every 2nd Tuesday at 7 pm, September 10, October 8, November 12, and December 10. Dallas Area Writers Group meetings are open to all writers who want to improve writing skills, meet other writers, and get published. There is no charge to attend.
Adult ESL Classes - We now offer FREE ESL classes for adult Spanish speakers. This class meets every Wednesday, September 18-October 23 at 12:30 pm. Space is limited, registration is required. You can register on our website in Spanish and English.

CEDAR HILL PARKS Park Pavilion Rentals City parks are a great place to celebrate, whether it be a birthday party, family reunion or just a picnic in the park. There are 15 covered pavilions that can be rented at various parks throughout the city along with the Amphitheater at Valley Ridge Park. All fees are due at the time of the reservation and you are required to reserve the pavilion for the entire time you occupy it. Contact the Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices at (972) 291-5130 to check availability and all reservations must be completed in person.
