As you know from watching TV or going to your mailbox, October 15th to December 7th is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). With all of the clutter, it can be di cult for Medicare beneficiaries to know what this time of year really means for them. Here’s what to know to ensure you’re prepared for this year’s AEP:
1. Your Medicare Benefits May Not Stay the Same
Every year in January, your Medicare benefits renew. You might think if you make no changes to your plan, you will receive the exact same benefits, but this is not always the case. Insurance companies review and make changes to their plans yearly, so your benefits may look di erent when January comes around. We recommend taking a look at your benefits every year to make sure your healthcare and budget needs are taken into account should there be any changes to your plan.
2. Make Sure Your Drugs Remain Covered on Your Part D
As insurance companies are doing annual reviews and making changes to their plans, your Part D coverage may be impacted. Check the updated list of covered drugs for your plan so you don’t end up with an unfortunate surprise at the pharmacy next year.
3. Keep Your Medicare Costs in Check
Just like your coverage can change from year to year, so can your Medicare costs. AEP is a good time to check in on your Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Part D costs. Your plan will provide you with an Annual Notice of Change letter that will detail any coverage and cost fluctuations of which to be aware. These letters will usually be available ahead of AEP.
4. Review Your Plan with Our Trusted Medicare Experts
Medicare is a complex system. We o er free consultations to our clients where we will sit down with you to review your plan and assess your current needs. Healthcare and budget needs change from year to year, and they are di erent for every person on Medicare. At Delta Benefits Group, we understand that your plan should be tailored to you– not the other way around. Give us a call at 901-460-7220 to schedule your free AEP appointment today and ensure you’re getting the most out of your Medicare benefits.
FROM THE Mayor & CHAMBER
President
Dear Neighbors,
This is a very special edition of Germantown Magazine, as it celebrates our furry, feathered, faithful, four-legged residents that so many of us love so dearly. Our animals keep us company, enrich our quality of life, entertain us and offer comfort and friendship, sometimes when we need it the most. That’s why this issue focuses on the animals of Germantown and the wonderful people who care for them.
Within these pages, you’ll find stories about our local animal shelter and the dedicated staff and volunteers who keep it running smoothly. You’ll also read about animals that are hard at work making Germantown an excellent place to call home. You’ll meet our heroic police K9 Enza and learn about the livestock guardian dogs over at Bobby Lanier Farm Park.
We had a great deal of fun putting this magazine together, and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed producing it. Inside, you’ll find ideas about how you can support our local animals, whether it’s through making a donation to Friends of the Germantown Animal Shelter, adopting an animal of your own, volunteering your time or pet supplies or simply thanking the hard-working people who oversee the safekeeping of our furry and feathered neighbors.
Regardless of how you contribute, if you own a pet, be sure to give them a big hug. They’re one of our greatest gifts, and life just wouldn’t be the same without them.

Meet Enza, Your Crime-Fighting Canine Police Officer
By Stephanie Painter
by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
Meet K9 Officer Enza, the longest serving canine at Germantown Police Department.
Enza is a natural athlete and tracker with impressive stats from a longstanding career in police work. She is such a pro that the FBI and Homeland Security have called her in to assist on cases. The Hungarian-born Belgian Malinois doesn’t need accolades or a promotion as reward, preferring instead a chewy KONG toy or game of catch with her handler.
Enza’s handler, Officer Nick Iacobucci, praises her contributions to police work. “Enza can lead us straight to a suspect and helps us cut down on manpower and increase our safety,” he said. “I always wanted to be a police officer, and the K9 part was another plus.”
The pair live and work together, and their bond developed when he began training the 18-month-old Enza. In practice exercises, Enza learned to locate narcotics, apprehend decoy suspects and assist with article searches, demonstrating the intelligence common to her breed. To increase public safety, Enza’s natural aptitude was turned into crime – fighting gold.
Certified through the National Narcotics Detector Dog Association and American Working Dog Association, Enza practices for two days every month to maintain her skills. “Apprehension of another officer who wears a bite suit is her favorite task to practice,” said Iacobucci. “She weighs 65 pounds; she’s small in stature but powerful.”
Robert Jones, the department’s lieutenant over K9s and day shift patrol, noted the importance of K9 teams for law enforcement.
Playing with Iacobucci on a work break, she is calm and sociable but quickly returns to the call of duty. Now age nine, she has assisted with 99 arrests and 18 suspect apprehensions; recovered 11 weapons; and tracked more than 19 grams of methamphetamine, two kilogram of marijuana, Ecstasy and fentanyl pills. She has located lost individuals and children and serves as an ambassador for the police department at elementary schools and scout meetings.
“Canines allow us to do more than we would normally be able to and allow a different connection with the community and children,” Jones said. “They are a great icebreaker and allow us to develop a trusting relationship with kids. Enza is an interactive visual aid of sorts, teaching the children her role and the role of officers in the community. All of this allows us to work toward our goal of gaining the trust of young people so that in the future, when they need help, they know that they can turn to police officers for assistance.”
When not working, Enza plays with other dogs and lounges on her handler’s sofa. In a formal department portrait,
Iacobucci and Enza pose together, two partners who make a strong team.
Enza is scheduled to retire in the next couple of years, and Iacobucci will host a party to honor her many years of service. In the meantime, she will continue her valuable work. As for her post-retirement plans: “She will be a house dog, and I will spoil her,” Iacobucci said with a smile. ■

Bobby Lanier Farm Park’s Sandy Hudson
Sandy Hudson serves as the Programming and Outreach Manager at the Bobby Lanier Farm Park, a 10-acre education and demonstration center for sustainable living through agriculture and stewardship located in the heart of Germantown.
Pursue a career that fuels your passion. It's been really easy because this is my passion. I love teaching, sharing knowledge, teaching kids about animals or teaching anybody that wants to know about animals and farm life in general.
A piece of advice I would give someone starting out is to question everything. Curiosity is essential for growth, and it gives us confidence to try new things. Never take, ‘It's always been done this way,’ for an answer as to why.
The best professional advice I’ve received is to ‘Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.’
Strive to constantly be doing something you love, and if you start to not love it, find something else.
Temple Grandin is someone I admire professionally. She has pursued her passions, interests and talents despite autism and being told at a young age that she should be institutionalized for life. She is an animal behavior expert
who has revolutionized animal welfare practices and shows us that disabilities of any kind should not define a person.
My favorite quote from Maya Angelou: ‘You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.’ Thinking outside the box, following the ‘crazy’ idea or just trying something new should always be the norm rather than the exception. Life is meant to be lived, explored and experienced - so go create in any form of the word. Know what fulfills you. What fulfills me is the ability to share knowledge with others and to try things just to see if I can do it.
I am most proud of the passion that I put into my work and the drive to share it with others.
My single greatest accomplishment is a hard one to pick. I would have to say ending up in my ‘dream job’ and working hard to get to this point in my career.
Make the most of your free time. When I am not working, I am spending my time with animals on my own farm. I also attend conventions and events with friends and create art in numerous forms including cosplay, taxidermy, drawing and fiber art. ■

THE OPTICAL BOUTIQUE
FAMILY EYECARE
Putting the 'family' in eyecare
Truly a family business, Dr Steven R Shum opened The Optical Boutique Family Eyecare in Germantown in 1975. He built the business on the principle of ‘treat others like you want to be treated’. This meant taking time to listen to his patients and personally educating them on their eye health needs. He believed that, when it comes to eyesight, only the best will do. With that in mind, he chose to offer only the finest quality eyeglasses, contact lenses and treatments available. It also meant using the latest technology to provide the most thorough eye exam possible, all the while, developing great relationships with his patients and staff. His belief paid off. In 2019, the clinic was named Germantown’s small business of the year! This was quite an honor, says his wife, Brister, an MBA who has been the practice administrator for 35 years.
Continuing his father’s legacy, Dr Andrew Shum joined the practice in 2016. Having literally grown up in the business, Dr Andrew learned as a teenager, the importance of building strong, caring relationships with patients. With special emphasis on the family, Dr Andrew enjoys seeing people of all ages… young and old and everyone in between. His laughter can often be heard throughout the office, making it a fun place to visit.
To celebrate nearly 50 years of serving the Germantown community and surrounding areas, a ‘Horses 10’ speed limit sign will be placed on Neshoba in honor of Dr Steven Shum…a fitting tribute since this family also shows horses!
Check them out for all your eyecare needs. You will be treated like family, too!

A NEW ON LIFE
Inside Germantown’s Animal Shelter
By Erinn Figg
by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
When Germantown Animal Shelter volunteer Dave Goberish arrives to walk the facility’s dogs three times a week, he gets a routine welcome every time.
“I open the door to the dog kennels, and every head turns toward me. The looks on those faces are priceless; they’re saying, ‘Please take me first.’ And then as soon as I say a word, they start carrying on like you wouldn’t believe,” says Goberish, a Germantown retiree who ensures that every dog there gets some of his undivided attention. “It gives me such a nice feeling that I’m going to make a difference in these dogs’ lives that day.”
And they make a difference in his: Goberish now owns one of those dogs: Leo, a chihuahua/Min Pin mix who stole his and his wife Marsha’s hearts.
Goberish and the other animal shelter volunteers are just one important contributor to the mission of the Germantown Animal Shelter of ensuring that the City’s homeless animals are well cared for and ultimately find forever homes.
The approximately 5,400-square-foot building, located at 7700 Southern Avenue between the City’s Fleet Maintenance and Public Services facilities, houses four dedicated staff members who pour equal amounts of love and professionalism into their daily tasks. Last year, the shelter had an estimated 245 intakes and an estimated 98 adoptions.
Photography
At the helm is Animal Services Manager Lia Roemer, a National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA)-certified animal control officer, who assumed the position in December 2023. She hit the ground running with big goals: aiming for higher placement rates, national grants, partnerships with the American Red Cross and professional growth for her
“I realized that we could all benefit from some continuing education, so everyone has gone through training to become certified animal control officers,” she Roemer’s love for animals is evident as she shares her background in animal welfare, a private animal clinic and her
“I love what I do every day. I’m excited about coming to work, and I love the people I work with,” she says. “I feel like animals are such an important part of our lives, and we’ve got to try every possible option to get them in their
Like Goberish, Roemer herself ultimately provided a forever home to one of those animalsParker, a beagle mix that she found in the shelter’s parking
Roemer, her staff, and the shelter’s volunteers aren’t alone in their mission. The Friends of the Germantown Animal Shelter sponsors a handful of annual events to support the shelter, including Photos With Santa and The Grinch as well as the Running of the Weenies at the annual
For the past 11 years, its President Steve Morley has headed the shelter’s fundraising arm, raising money for everything from cat condominiums to emergency surgeries to out-ofstate adoption transport fees. He echoes Roemer's passion for the cause.
Morley, a longtime Germantown resident, says when he first saw the animal shelter, his impression was “less than positive.”
"It was mid-July and the air conditioning was out at the time," he says. "There were box fans in the hallway and large industrial fans in the kennel area. The kittens were also housed in cages with just enough room for a litter pan, a food dish and a bed."
Morley enlisted the help of then-alderman Mayor Mike Palazzolo, and in partnership with the City, Morley’s group made drastic changes, remodeling the kennel area, carpeting the outside play area with artificial turf, adding a socialization room where potential adopters can bring in existing pets to meet potential new family members, and adding a wing for unvetted stray dogs. In short, the shelter had come a long way since its beginnings in 1982.
Today, Morley is also focused on raising awareness, as well as funds.
“When we first started, I was shocked that so many people in Germantown didn’t know we had a shelter or where it was located,” Morley says. “Now that it’s been remodeled, we want people to come out and see what we have to offerand make a donation. The money we raise goes right back into the shelter to cover things not included in the budget.”
As for Roemer, she hopes more people will consider volunteering.
“We’re always encouraging people to come to our volunteer orientation that’s held once a month on Saturday at 10 a.m. All they need to do is just give us a call and we’ll sign them up for the next available one.”
For more information on volunteering, contact Roemer at LRoemer@Germantown-TN.gov or (901) 757-7358. ■
Germantown Canines and Their Exciting Careers

Woodrow
of Millstone Market & Nursery
Millstone Market & Nursery owner Tricia Hunt has been helping Germantown residents and visitors make their house a home for more than 16 years, but she’s also known as the beloved mom of Woodrow - a popular Bernese Mountain Dog and fixture of the Germantown business.
Like his namesake Woodrow Wilson, 4-year-old Woodrow the greeter is full of personality. With Millstone’s more than 195,000 Instagram followers who know and love Woodrow, he’s also quite famous. In fact, people travel from hundreds of miles away just to meet the Insta-famous canine. As a happy dog who loves children, people have come to know him by name, and he’s gained quite the reputation as a “dog” about town.
“People come from all over the country who follow us on social media that haven’t met him but make a special point to make their way through Germantown just to see Woodrow,” says Tricia.
For Tricia and her husband of 41 years, Dade, Woodrow was the fourth Bernese Mountain Dog in the family.
“We got him when he was a puppy from Greenfield Puppies in Pennsylvania,” says Tricia. “We’ve had a lot of pets, but Woodrow takes the cake. He’s the most obedient and most intelligent animal we’ve ever had. He’s pretty special.”
While a large breed, Woodrow is very gentle with adults and kids alike and has a natural instinct for knowing how to get people to warm up to him. He is kind and friendly with guests, but Tricia notes that he also has great instincts when it comes to people and other animals, always allowing them to approach him first.
“When people come into the shop, he doesn’t approach them first or run up to them,” says Tricia. “He has an instinct for who wants to be approached and who does not. As soon as they start petting him, then he gets closer and opens up.”
Woodrow gets paid in belly rubs and Woodrow hugs. “He’s always rolling over for a belly rub when the kids come by. When you go up to greet Woodrow, he’ll wrap you in a hug by wrapping one of his paws around your leg. We call it a Woodrow hug.”
Koza & Ziega
of the Bobby Lanier Farm Park
At just 9-months-old, Farm Park residents and Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd mixes Koza and Ziega are still growing (both are expected to be close to 100 pounds when fully grown), but even as puppies, they’ve already earned a reputation for having one of the most important canine jobs in town.
Koza and Ziega both mean goat in different languages (Polish and German). “While their names are a bit eccentric, our visitors love learning about them, interacting with them and bringing tasty snacks,” says Farm Park Program and Outreach Manager Sandy Hudson.
Ziega has a reputation for being the more playful of the duo, but Farm Park visitors have likely encountered both surveying their domain while interacting with guests.
“During field trips, Ziega is in heaven,” Sandy says. “Kids gather around her, and she gets constant belly rubs. She is definitely the people's dog. Koza, on the
other hand, enjoys greeting visitors but also appreciates her space and is keen to protect her charges, even from umbrellas. During interactions with strangers, she tends to sit back and observe, but if she knows you as a friend, she will follow you everywhere and solicit head pats.”
Koza and Ziega are more than just friendly faces on the 10-acre working farm. As Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs), they hold the very important task of protecting the “herd” of farm animals they’ve bonded with, including goats, chickens and their human caretakers.
“They are always paying attention and listening,” says Sandy. “LGDs are more active at night since that is typically when predators are causing trouble, but the pesky lawn mower is definitely not going to come in their pen during the day, and they make it known. With Farm Park programs growing and additional educational animals being added, our LGDs are crucial to keeping all of our animals safe at all times.”
Koza and Ziega guard the grounds daily while on the prowl for wildlife that might harm the other animals. They even watch for aerial predators seeking to make off with chickens, ward off stray dogs and keep late night trespassers from causing chaos.
“The saying ‘Find a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life’ really hits home with these two,” says Sandy. “The girls operate off of pure instinct with little training needed, as they are bred to protect their ‘herd’ and love their job.
“LGDs have deeply instilled instincts going back 10,000 years that solidify that this is not work to them but a lifestyle, and they think ‘payment’ is unnecessary,” says Hudson, “but they are also gifted everything from elk antlers to goldfish crackers, depending on what snacks kids are willing to share. Of course they have to test the snacks before the rest of the herd gets to enjoy them!”
Gunner & Wendy of
Hollywood Feed
At Hollywood Feed of Germantown, 1-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback and Boxer mix Gunner takes his greeter role very seriously. He has faithfully clocked in every day with owner and store manager Moe Gray since his adoption from New Beginnings Rescue after being found with his siblings in a box on the side of the road. He has quickly become a favorite employee.
“He has learned that if he climbs up with his paws on the counter that most customers either give him a sample of our treats, or they buy him his own treat,” Gray says. “He remembers exactly who those customers are and will make it known that he remembers you. We call him our ‘quality control’ inspector.”
Gunner’s fellow canine coworker Wendy is another friendly face customers can expect to encounter at Hollywood Feed. While Gunner might have mastered the art of the puppy dog eyes, Wendy gladly enjoys her tenure with a long list of regulars who ask for her by name on her off days.
“Gunner greeting each person allows customers to ask questions about what he is fed, what treats he likes
“We often call (Gunner) our ‘quality control’ inspector.”
- Moe Gray, Store Manager, Hollywood Feed
best, what chews he enjoys the most or what supplements I use for him,” she says. “That opens the door for me to be able to show them and let them try it out on their pup.”
Gunner’s role is a heartwarming example of how a dog’s instincts and affectionate nature can bring joy and comfort to an ordinary errand.
“Dog-friendly businesses are a fantastic way to brighten a customer’s day with affection and love,” she says. “Anytime I go into another business that is dog friendly and am greeted by a fur baby, it always makes me so happy.
Brody
of The Village at Germantown
According to longtime residents and employees of The Village at Germantown, Chief Canine Officer Brody is part dog, part resident, part employee and part family.
Brody’s office features a custom name plate, a bed fit for a king and his own doggie door. He is always dressed appropriately for every holiday and occasion, while his door is always decked with seasonal décor. When the office staff leaves for the day, Brody sneaks into the lobby to snooze on the sofa while falling asleep to the piano music.
“Brody hit the jackpot when he was adopted by The Village,” says Megan Collins, VP of Sales & Marketing. “He is showered with attention 24/7. Every resident thinks they are the ONLY person to give Brody treats, so his day is filled with a never-ending supply of chicken chews and Milk-Bones. If it isn’t apparent by his figure, Brody loves food and lounging.”
Brody does not have a set schedule for the week, but more often than not, he can be found greeting guests. When grandchildren visit, one of the first things they want to see when they arrive is Brody. For residents unable to care for a pet of their own, Brody has stepped in to provide support and affection.
The 14-year-old Retriever and Labrador mix was connected to The Village through Memphis Golden Retriever Rescue.
“While Brody isn’t a Golden Retriever, he is ‘golden’ to everyone who works and lives here!” Megan says. “His legacy will be part of the community long after he is gone. We recently had two large murals of horses in a pasture completed for our lobby; we later had the artist add Brody.”
While Brody is friendly, he also has a mischievous side. “Brody is on his best behavior most days, but he has been known to dig up a flower bed or two after the landscapers have JUST finished seasonal planting at our front entrance,” Collins says. “He also knows how to sweet talk our security manager, Jenn, into taking him for an out-of-office staycation at her home to hang with her family and dogs on special weekends.” ■

This month’s dinner is at Nicky’s where her big game hunter husband insists on showing off his recently installed meat locker to the other boorish golfer husbands, while the wives stay in the kitchen exchanging confidences. These desperate housewives begin to bond for the first time as they realize how sick they are of the husbands harassing them from the living room. Molly’s husband is stalking her, Debra’s husband is leaving her for another woman and Nicky’s is embezzling money and only spending it on what he wants. Will they plot to get rid of their husbands together or fight each other when an easy out presents itself to all three of them?
