Dear neighbors, As we start a fresh new year, this issue, with its home and garden focus, highlights growth, community and new beginnings. It’s a great reflection of common themes in our City. As you know, here in Germantown, we’re constantly striving to grow in excellence, build strong bonds as a community and innovate as we continually raise the bar for quality of life.
•
Insight from Michael Owen, County Agent for 4-H and Youth Development at the UT-TSU Shelby County Extension, on working with youth, fostering positive life skills and building future leaders
•
To that end, this issue spotlights residents who are doing their part to lay the groundwork for an even brighter tomorrow. Whether they’re cultivating community gardens or elevating the quality of their neighborhoods by remodeling homes, they’re shaping the future and ensuring that Germantown remains an ideal place for people to put down roots.
A close-up look at ‘Shelby Canopy,’ our City’s first public art installation, which aims to bring awareness to our region’s treasured natural resources
•
A preview of this year’s Tour of Remodeled Homes and Landscapes, hosted by the Neighborhood Preservation Commission, which gives residents an opportunity to share ideas and examples of how to upgrade their homes
Within these pages, we hope you find something that inspires you to get more involved with our wonderful community, including the following stories: •
Hometown Hero Jon House, who has transformed the Forest Hill Elementary Learning Garden into an outdoor classroom for science and math, sparking wonder and an enthusiasm for learning among his second-grade students

Lea Carr Named by the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce (GACC) as 2023 Ambassador of the Year, it's no secret Lea Carr loves to give back. And as Assistant Vice President of Private Banking at Paragon Bank, she also enjoys working with both small businesses and individuals on their financial needs, and strives to give clients the best of both worlds: the small hometown feel with all of the products and technology that larger banks can offer, like online banking with a mobile platform. With Paragon’s customer-centered service philosophy and four banking centers spread across Greater Memphis, including one near the Saddle Creek shopping center, Carr’s office is anywhere it needs to be. She likes to meet people where they work or live to provide the utmost convenience for them. It also provides her the opportunity to build great professional relationships, so she can discover the best ways to help them. Most often she gets referrals from existing clients.
10 Germantown Magazine
Besides assisting with GACC ribbon-cuttings, membership luncheons and greeting new members, Carr also volunteers her time with numerous other nonprofits. She has served on the boards of Dorothy Day House, the Salvation Army and as treasurer of the Rotary Club. She is not alone in her efforts. Each employee at Paragon Bank participates in their Assisting the Community Through Service (ACTS) program. Collectively, they decide which missions to support, and the bank pays employees for 40 community service hours per year. From preparing hygiene kits for the homeless, to teaching financial education to students in Binghampton, Carr doesn’t like to brag about her charity work. “I just like to help. It allows us to have a good pulse on needs in the community,” she says. ■ Written by Candice Baxter Photography by Alex Ginsburg Photographics

n a diverse garden on the Forest Hill Elementary School campus, young growers work surrounded by stepping stones, their small hands encircling tomatoes and strawberries. They look not at tablet screens, but instead gaze on lush kale leaves and ripe peaches. Teacher Jon House patiently offers a tool or tip, sometimes even playing ukulele and sharing his original song about photosynthesis. House’s grandparents introduced him to gardening when he was in high school, and in a single growing season, the city kid developed reverence for the process of growing produce and flowers. When the season's first monarch butterfly hovers over a coneflower, it's hard to say who is more delighted, veteran teacher or youth. "Children today are not digging in the dirt and watching things grow unless mom or dad is doing it at home," says House, an educator for 16 years. "It's therapeutic, and they learn science and math in the garden.” With fruit trees, inground and raised beds, and a butterfly garden, the Forest Hill Elementary Learning Garden functions as an outdoor classroom for his secondgraders and other students who want to help.
Written by Stephanie Painter
He received a $10,000 grant from Germantown Education Foundation and brought in Paul Bruns of Good Winds Landscape & Garden Center to assist with a
master plan. Supplemented by extra funds from a private donor and PTO, along with donations of dirt and fertilizer, the little garden thrives under students’ care. As seasons change, they plant seeds in pods, moving them to hydroponic towers and then outdoors in the spring. Last summer's harvest yielded tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, zucchini and herbs. Children sampled produce at their dinner tables and sold some at outdoor markets. "Our goal is to run our own farmer's market stand in the summer from a shed at school. Students get math lessons in volume, area and perimeter, and they learn about germination, decomposition, life cycle of plants, metamorphosis of butterflies and how hygrometers measure humidity.” In the summer, families in surrounding neighborhoods volunteer to weed and monitor for bugs, and a drip line timer is set up for irrigation. Caring for the garden brings first-hand rewards and disappointment. Some tomatoes and a sweet potato vine were lost after a hard frost. "At the time, we were talking about Western expansion and how people grew their own food." House spends the first nine weeks showing students that hands-on learning is fun. “When a parent says, ‘My kid loves coming to school,’ I feel that I'm doing my job.” ■ Germantown Magazine

LEAD ER SHI P
What I’ve Learned Michael Owen COUNTY AGENT, 4-H AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT UT-TSU SHELBY COUNTY EXTENSION Interview conducted by Stephanie Painter Photography by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
In 4-H, we instill positive life skills in a safe environment. Youth say, ‘I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world.’ My dad taught me you can’t get anything without hard work. He taught me everything I know. He was the first in his family to go to college. He also taught me woodworking and how to fix things. The sky’s the limit, and you can do anything. This is my advice to those starting out. You’ll have to work hard, and there will be times when you will be frustrated. But don’t give up. My boss, Dr. Chris Cooper, has an ability to connect with everyone and still be a leader. Like myself, he is a minority who works in agriculture, and it’s great to see him become a leader and know that I could be just like him one day. The best professional advice I received is, ‘Don’t be afraid to ask questions.’ I tell kids that they don’t have to be experts on everything, but they must be willing to learn.
24 Germantown Magazine
Near and dear to my heart is working with special needs students in the schools and providing them with opportunities and experiences that any other student would have. Part of the 4-H mission is building leaders for tomorrow and good citizens, and Germantown is a fantastic model community. My favorite quote is from Lane Frost: ‘Don’t be afraid to go after what you want to do and what you want to be, but don't be afraid to be willing to pay the price.’ I’m proud of making a difference in the lives of students and their families, making sure that they all feel welcome. ■ *Find a full list of upcoming 4-H programming at Bobby Lanier Farm Park beginning on page 45.

Tour of Remodeled Homes and Landscapes Showcases Inspirational Residential Transformations
28 Germantown Magazine
Written by Erinn Figg Photography by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
G
ermantown’s annual Tour of Remodeled Homes and Landscapes is more than just a showcase of residential transformations; it's a celebration of creative vision and the accompanying determination that turns houses into dream homes. Each year, the City’s Neighborhood Preservation Commission (NPC) organizes the free, self-guided tour to highlight houses that have undergone significant interior or exterior design changes, improvements or full-blown renovations. This year’s tour takes place on Sunday, April 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. “I think residents will really enjoy seeing remodeling ideas that they may be able to incorporate into their own homes,” NPC Chair Ellen Bernstein says. “We will have homes with amazing outdoor living areas as well as homes that have done extensive indoor renovations on the tour. Our last tour drew record crowds, and we anticipate the same enthusiastic response this year.” In 2022, more than 300 “tourists” participated in the three-hour event. (Due to scheduling conflicts, there was no tour in 2023.)
PRESERVING AND ELEVATING NEIGHBORHOODS The purpose of the NPC is to promote and preserve the integrity of residential neighborhoods and foster a sense of community in those neighborhoods. Part of that mission includes educating residents on the importance of reinvesting in their homes, both to raise property values and ensure continued code compliance. To that end, the commission annually seeks out homeowners who have upgraded their homes or yards and are willing to share their results with the public. Interested residents respond to a public call for participants, and then a dedicated NPC subcommittee screens the homes and selects the tour stops. When the tour locations are finalized, the City publishes a map, exterior photos and the remodel descriptions on the City website. Attendees can drop by any or all of the homes in whatever order they wish. NPC members and other volunteers are on hand at each house to ensure that guests stay in designated areas and foot traffic flows smoothly. The Germantown Police Department also patrols the surrounding streets for added peace of mind.

TOUR OF REMODELED HOMES AND LANDSCAPES Sunday, April 28 2 to 5 p.m.
A TRANSFORMATIVE TRANSITION Emily Keever, owner of Hinge Interior and one of the designers for the new Glasgow development, is one of the homeowners participating in the April tour. She and her husband Jason moved to Germantown from Denver in August 2023 to be closer to family. The home they purchased in the Birnam Woods subdivision was built in 1998, and the couple wanted to modernize it. “The home’s architecture is French European,” says Keever. “We kept that in mind while renovating the interior and leaned into making it more Belgian farmhouse style.” The Keevers hired contractor Tony Salvaggio of Germantown-based Salvaggio Group to complete the renovation, which included a full cosmetic facelift on the main level: refinished wood floors, wood beams, a new entry of reclaimed limestone, new cabinets,

plumbing, paint, tile and decorative lighting. They also updated all the door hardware and remodeled both fireplace inserts and surrounds. The Keevers’ will be one of at least four homes featured on the Tour of Remodeled Homes and Landscapes this year. To see all the featured homes, including photos and maps, visit Germantown-TN.gov/HomeTour. ■

Blue chalk pigment and wind chimes bring awareness to our region’s treasured natural resources.

“Come on a sunny day, as opposed to dim afternoon light. It changes as you walk through.” - Lorraine Ferguson

SEE THE FOREST THROUGH THE TREES Blue Trees, tinted with a safe chalk pigment, is part of an immersive public art installation by Konstantin Dimopoulos. Reminiscent of his ancestral Greek tradition of whitewashing the trunks of olive trees to protect from sun scald and pests, he chose this particular color for contrast because it does not exist organically in trees. The tint is biologically harmless to all plants, insects, waterways and humans. Depending on the amount of UV rays and rainfall, the trees will return to their natural state in a few months. "Shelby Canopy" is a temporary installation brought forth by the City of Germantown’s Public Art Program. Dimopoulos, a worldrenowned artist who has installed the exhibit in 35 other cities across the globe, gave lectures at local elementary schools. He said, “Blue Trees takes an urban landscape, with which you are familiar, and changes it for a brief period of time. So that it becomes surreal, unfamiliar and even uncomfortable.” Young art students brushed the trunks of selected trees on campus and learned to share awareness about deforestation. He encouraged them to be a beacon of hope and use their own artistic talents to bring awareness to causes they deem important.
W
alking the path near the Germantown Greenway West parking lot trailhead feels like entering a scene from a Dr. Seuss book. All around, the trunks of various trees gleam bright blue in contrast to the usual brown and beige. Hues change from pale powder to deep indigo as the trail curves and shadows play on slants of light through the upper branches. Mellow tones of wind chimes in scale announce the unseen breeze. “Shelby Canopy: Our Shared Connection” heightens the senses of both sight and sound along an easily accessible half-mile loop in the woods.
“It’s not paint,” says Riverdale sixth-grader June Crawford. “It’s like wet chalk that won’t hurt the tree. Because it’s blue, you’ll notice this tree, when any other time you probably wouldn’t pay attention to it.” Also tinted are the crepe-myrtles near the entrance of Germantown Community Library where Dimopoulos spoke to local residents and tourists who came from several states to hear the artist in person. On installation day, 50 volunteers joined together to tint over 150 trees along the Wolf River Greenway.

HEAR NATURE’S HARMONY IN TREE TONES Past the blue trees and around the bend, a strong breeze stirs the sails of wind chimes hung throughout the Shelby Canopy trail. Barely visible, the brown aluminum tubes of various lengths add a calming harmony to the traffic noise more pronounced since foliage has fallen. Local artist duo Belleau + Churchill collaborated with area musicians and park rangers, selecting tones inspired by nature and music theory. Out of the many trees in the forest, six species were selected to represent the notes of “Tree Tones,” based on their prevalence and role in this specific ecosystem: Bald Cypress, Hackberry, Hickory, PawPaw, Sweetgum and Water Oak.

FUNDING FOR THE ARTS “I was very intentional with every aspect of ‘Shelby Canopy,’ from its location near the border between Germantown and the city of Memphis, to how the project was funded,” says Public Art Manager Cat Peña. She applied for the $50,000 grant from the National Endowment of the Arts three years ago, with an agreement to match that amount from the City in-kind through labor. Along with Peña’s work coordinating the project, artist visits and educational components, Parks and Recreation identified and tested each thin-barked tree to make sure it was healthy before tinting. Free and open to the public from sunrise to sunset, the trail loop is flat terrain easily navigated by strollers and wheelchairs. According to audio tour downloads, which are available in multiple languages through QR codes posted at the exhibit entrance, hundreds of people have experienced “Shelby Canopy.” Bob and Lorraine Ferguson have lived in Germantown for 20 years and walk the Greenway almost every day. “We usually take a different way but wanted to see the blue trees,” says Lorraine. “Come on a sunny day, as opposed to dim afternoon light. It changes as you walk through.” ■

Directed by Jeff Posson and starring Christina Welford Scott, Kim Justis Eikner and Tony Isbell. The Children by Lucy Kirkwood is set in ‘a small cottage on the east coast’, where Hazel and Robin, two retired nuclear scientists in their mid-sixties, are living. A recent disaster at the local power station where they used to work has devastated the area and they live under the threat of radiation pollution. Electricity and water are rationed and they keep a Geiger counter to check for signs of radiation. However, Hazel is determined to preserve some semblance of normality and live the healthiest life she possibly can. So, Robin now farms, while Hazel practices yoga and devours salad. But when Rose, a former colleague whom they haven’t seen for 38 years, suddenly turns up, she disrupts their precariously ordered existence. Rose is determined that they must fix the problems they have caused for the next generation, even if it means certain death. Exploring issues of accountability, guilt and morality, Lucy Kirkwood’s three-hander presents a very real, post-nuclear world. LITTLE WOMEN MARCH 1 THROUGH 17 Adapted from the novel by Louisa May Alcott. Jo March isn’t your typical Victorian lady. She’s indecorous and
headstrong and one day she’s going to be a great American novelist. As she and her sisters grow up in the middle of the Civil War, they strive to be brave, intelligent and imaginative young women. But as adulthood approaches, each sister must negotiate her private ambitions with society’s expectations. In a war-torn world defined by gender, class and personal tragedy, Jo March gives us her greatest story: that of the March sisters, four dreamers destined to be imperfect little women. “Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Little Women…is a sublime example of how to make 19th century works relevant to modern audiences. Directed by Julie Reinbold with an all-star cast! This show is sponsored by Fred and Brandy Miller in honor of their 50th anniversary. THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME APRIL 12 THROUGH 28
GERMANTOWN MUNICIPAL SCHOOL DISTRICT (GMSD)
Christopher, fifteen years old, has an extraordinary brain. He is exceptional at math, while everyday life presents some barriers. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. When he falls under suspicion for killing his neighbor’s dog, it takes him on a journey that upturns his world. Adapted from Mark Haddon’s novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time which was published in 2003 and was the winner of more than 17 literary awards. Hailed as ‘a phenomenal combination of storytelling and spectacle’ (The Times) The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time directed by Marques Brown is a theatrical event not-to-be missed.
