Golden

2019 GOLDEN GUIDE

Welcome to

The defining character to Golden's cultural and literal topography is that it is not simply any one thing. It is between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. More specifically, it sits between the north and south table mountains and the foothills. It straddles Clear Creek. It marks the dividing line between the urban Denver metro area and the wilds of the west.

Golden straddles time too. Just like the sign says, this is where the west lives, with museums, a history park and even Wild Bill himself looking over it all. It is one of Colorado's oldest cities, actually serving as the territorial capitol. Even before white settlers came to the area, the Native Americans had long found the area pleasant to visit, and a useful place to begin journeys up into the mountains. The Magic Mountain archaeological site, near today's Apex Open Space Park has revealed human habitation in the area going back at least to 4,000 B.C. And yet climb the Apex trails, and signs of the future are easy to spot. You can see the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on the slopes of South Table Mountain, where cuttingedge energy research is occurring. Look more towards the heart of Golden and the unmistakable bell tower and athletic fields identify the Colorado School of Mines, where the next generation of engineers are being trained. Look to the south, and you might catch the flashing lights and thumping beat of an up-and-coming performing artist at the worldrenowned Red Rocks Amphitheater.

The 2019 Golden Guide is a special supplement of the Golden Transcript, a Colorado Community Media publication contributions by

Venture back down the trail, and see how both the past and the future blend together. Cyclists roll by on the classic Lariat Loop, but do so using space-age materials. Clear Creek still tumbles along its age-old path, offering a gateway into the Rockies. But nowadays you're more likely to see thrill seekers — in the form of kayakers or rock climbers — than gold prospectors. Stroll through the Golden History Park along Clear Creek's banks, and marvel at the homes of some of the area's earliest settlers. And as you do, use your smartphone to check out the extensive photo archive available on the Golden History Museum's website to learn even more. Even the iconic Coors Brewery, established in 1873, represents this blending of old and new. It was Coors after all, that hearkened in the modern era of the aluminum beer can. But even since then, the brewery has continued to innovate. In 2013 it became one of the first breweries in North America to become landfillfree — diverting 99 percent of all its waste products towards recycle or reuse.

There is innovation in the beer as well. Deep inside the brewery, the AC Golden brewing division has been producing specialty creations, and experimenting with what makes a good beer. Visit the shops of Golden, and the mix of old and new continues. You can find traditional western-style jewelry at Creekside Jewelers, or high-tech adventure gear at Bent Gate. Hungry? Get a classic American meal at the Olde Capitol Grill and Smokehouse — where the first state legislature met — or stroll down the street to Abejas for a bite of modern cuisine. These options and more await you in Golden. Come, and find just the right mix of old and new for you. president

Beyond the beer,

2019 GOLDEN GUIDE

Golden tour lets you see and sample 145-year-old tour tradition continues

BY CHRISTY STEADMAN

In September 2017, Goldenite Connie Weiss rounded up five of her closest friends to do something she had never done before to celebrate her 47th birthday. The group’s adventure was a tour of the Coors Brewery in Golden. “I like organizing fun outings with my friends and I’d always wanted to do the tour,” Weiss said, who has lived in Golden for three years. “It was the first time for all of us. It was perfect.” Because all six of them have lived in — or near — Golden for years, they especially enjoyed learning the history of the Coors heritage. But, of course, “our favorite part was the free samples,” confessed Weiss.

Beer is one of those things, that although everybody has different preferences for the product itself, there will always be a common ground. — Golden Brewery Tour Guide Shannon Shuey

Beyond those free samples, there are many other aspects to the Golden Brewery Tour that makes it an allencompassing, worthwhile outing for both tourists and locals alike, said Shannon Shuey, a lifelong Golden resident who has been a Golden brewery tour guide for 12 years. For example, he said, some people are fascinated with the science and chemistry behind the brewing. Others are interested in the history of the 145-year-old brewery. And still others want to learn more about the business side of how such a facility operates. “Beer is one of those things,” explained Shuey, “that although everybody has different preferences for the product itself, there will always be a common ground.” PAGE 11

FROM PAGE 5

Adolph Coors, a German man who immigrated to the U.S. at age 21, opened his brewery in Golden in 1873. He chose Golden, Shuey said, because of the mountain water that comes from the Clear Creek basin. Some form of brewery tours have been available to the public since the beginning, according to Shuey, but they became more formalized sometime after World War II. Tourism to Colorado for outdoor recreation was taking off at this time, Shuey said, as was word of Coors beer, which was only available in 18 western states until the 1980s. “When people came here,” Shuey said, “is often when they got their first taste of Coors.” People would come to Colorado for vacation, he said, and load up on Coors beer to take home with them to other parts of the country. This demand for the beer was the premise for the 1977 film, “Smokey and the Bandit.” Today, the Golden Brewery Tours attract about 300,000 people annually, who come from across the U.S. and all over the world. Audio tours are offered in five languages — English, Spanish, German, French and Mandarin. The Coors Brewery has become one of the must-see places in Denver, Shuey stated. And it becomes a “natural draw” for people to end up spending time in Golden — whether to visit historic downtown or stroll along Clear Creek, Shuey said. They enjoy hearing about the Colorado School of Mines “M” on Mount Zion or landmarks from when Golden was the territorial capitol. “Coors is an iconic, very well-known brand,” he said. “And this (in Golden) is where it all started.”

The brewhouse is the heart of the operation, stated Shuey. It is home to 50 copper kettles that do the “physical cooking of the ingredients.” The kettles

TAKE A TOUR

• A full Golden Brewery tour experience includes a short shuttle ride from the visitor parking lot to the brewery; a 30-minute self-paced tour ending with beer samples in the Hospitality Lounge and a visit to the Coors & Co. gift shop. • Tours are open to the public and reservations are not required, except for groups of 15 or more. • Those younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Beer samples are only offered to people 21 years and older with a valid ID, but non-alcoholic beverages are available for all. • Because the tours take place in a working manufacturing facility, baby strollers, purses, backpacks and bags are not allowed, but wallets are. Guests are asked to plan accordingly, as there is no onsite storage. • Cameras and photos are allowed. range in size from holding 200-to-600 barrels. For perspective, a 600-barrel kettle can hold about 18,000 gallons. Another popular stop for tour attendees is packaging, where Sheuy said people could spend all day watching machines push out the cans, and the boxes of beer go by on the pulleys.

• Tours begin in the southeast corner of the visitor parking lot, located at 13th and Ford streets in Golden. • Tours of the brewery are offered on most days of the week. • Winter hours, Aug. 9-May 30, are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tours on Sundays are offered noon to 4 p.m. No tours on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. • Tours during summer hours, May 31- Aug. 12, are offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. • Tours are not offered on most major holidays. • For more information, visit www. millercoors.com/breweries/coorsbrewing-company/tours or call the general contact number at 1-866-8122337. But at the end of the tour, nearly everybody ends up in the brewery’s tasting room, called the Hospitality Lounge, for beer samples. People always have a good time on the tours, and enjoy capping it off with a visit to the Hospitality Lounge, said Sherri Portenier, a beer-tender in the PAGE 13

Hospitality Lounge. Generally, the brewery is a destination stop for people on vacation, or locals like to bring their family and friends from out-of-town, Portenier said. It’s fun to get to talk with all of them, she added. “But what’s exciting is meeting the people who say they’ve been drinking Coors their whole life,” Portenier said, “and them telling me that they finally get to mark taking the (brewery) tour off their bucket list.”

Arizona residents Falicha Bravo, 26, and Cynthia Heil, 25, spent about a week in Colorado mid-December 2018 to celebrate their anniversary. They stayed in Denver, and their planned outings included visits to museums and a trip to the mountains. The couple made their way to Golden on Dec. 13 because Bravo “loves beer,” she said, and wanted to tour the Golden Brewery. In the brewery’s Hospitality Lounge that day, Bravo enjoyed a Miners Moon, which is a blend of Killian's Irish Red and Blue Moon Belgian Style Wheat Ale. “It’s fun to try new things,” she said. “I never would’ve thought to try that at home.” Heil never was a fan of the taste of beer, she said. She’d sampled a variety of different beers before, she said, but none struck her fancy. But Heil enjoyed sipping on her Blue Moon, garnished with an orange slice, in the Hospitality Lounge. “It might be because we’re here, where they’re making the beer,” Heil mused. “That makes it that much more exciting.”

Top: Sherri Portenier serves beer in the brewery's Hospitality Lounge, where guests can sample a variety of beers at the end of the tour. Below: The tasting room is a highlight of the tour for many guests.

DID YOU KNOW? • Prohibition hit Colorado in 1916, a few years earlier than the rest of the country. Coors survived prohibition largely by producing non-alcoholic beverages, primarily malted milk. • Coors has always been a charitable organization. Today, it supports local organizations such as the Christian Action Guild and Family Tree, as well as national organizations such as United Way and the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

• Coors has a green streak. Its first recycling effort began in 1885, when people received 45 cents when they returned a dozen empty quart bottles. Today, the Golden brewery is just one of the company’s major breweries that is landfill-free, meaning nearly 100 percent of its waste is re-used or recycled.

CLEAR CREEK TRAIL

NORTH TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILS

APEX PARK

EASY 1.6 MILES OF TRAILS 30 MINUTES TO 1.5 HOURS

EASY TO MODERATE 17 MILES OF TRAILS 30 MINUTES TO 2 HOURS

MODERATE 9.5 MILES OF TRAILS 1 TO 4 HOURS

The most popular network of trails in Golden are those that wind along both banks of Clear Creek.

An open space park nestled in the north end of Golden, the nearly-2,000 acre North Table Mountain Park has the uncanny ability to simultaneously make you feel someplace quite wild while still giving you an expansive view of the metro area.

Put simply, Apex Park lives up to its name.

The trails are easily accessed via Vanover Park at Water and Ford Streets, the Visitors Center at Washington Ave. and 10th St., the Library at 10th and Illinois Streets, Lions Park at 10th and Maple Streets and from 6th Avenue Trail. With access to several parks, the Golden Visitor’s Center, Golden Public Library, and Golden History Park the trails make for a pleasant way to access much of what the city has to offer. In the summer, folks looking to wade in the creek, or even inner tube down the rippling water will find designated creek entry points along the path. In December, the creek is aglow every night with thousands of festive lights on virtually every tree. Anglers, goldpanners, and adventuring cyclists may want to go further afield, following the stream upwards into Clear Creek Canyon, or follow paved paths to the east, connecting with the expansive trail networks of Wheat Ridge and beyond.

Wildlife thrives amidst the rocky cliffs of the mesa. There is a seasonal closure of Rim Rock Trail from Feb. 1 to July 31 to allow raptors to successfully fledge along the northern cliffs. Also, an ongoing study is tracking more than a dozen rattlesnakes that call the park home. Not to worry though, give the animals a respectful amount of space, and they will happily leave you alone as well. Follow park rules, stay on the trail, be aware of your surroundings, and definitely enjoy your time hiking, rock climbing, or mountain biking along the park’s 17 miles of trails.

Whether you’re looking for a rugged climb with great views, or want to challenge your technical skills as a mountain biker, this is just about as good as it gets for Front Range fun. It is a popular, accessible foothills experience minutes from downtown Golden, that offers a wonderful variety in terrain. From the Jefferson County Open Space website: A stream runs alongside a trail in part of the park, and a dense forest provides shady areas on the west end. This park is popular for mountain biking as it offers more technical trails and a steep challenge up Lookout Mountain. Be aware, there are directional restrictions for Apex Park’s trails: Apex, Argos and Enchanted Forest Trails are directional-use trails. Bicyclists are required to ride in one direction only (uphill/west) on odd-numbered calendar days. Photos by Shanna Fortier

W

hatever brings you to Golden — a wedding, a graduation, a wellearned vacation — few things let you truly enjoy a place more than spending the night. Golden is no exception. Consider the magic of a moonlit stroll along Clear Creek before bed, followed by getting to see the sunrise over the table mountains. Luckily the city offers some unique lodging opportunities, which are listed on the following pages. If you are looking to stay the night, here are a few tips to make the most of your stay!

First, you have some choices when it comes to nightlife. The Bridgewater Grill at the Golden Hotel features a wonderful creekside dining experience, but also a full bar and often has live musical performers during the summer months. The Miner’s Alley Playhouse, in the heart of downtown, features live theater most every Thursday-Saturday evening. Known for its many live music and entertainment events, the Buffalo Rose at 1119 Washington Avenue is scheduled to open January, 2019. Second, you’ve got no shortage of breakfast spots to wake up to. Cafe 13 has a wonderful selection of baked goods and strong coffee. The Golden Diner is a local favorite for classic

American breakfast fare. Third, a great way to start or end the day is with a drive up Lookout Mountain. Whether it’s to see the stars and the lights of Denver twinkle in the night, or to see the sun rise over the Great Plains and burn off the morning mist, the views are hard to beat. No matter what brought you to town, we hope you enjoy your stay, and make yourself at home!

G

olden is bursting with unique experiences in our one-of-kind western town with activities to charm every age, interest and adventure level. Our community features an amazing schedule of special events and festivals to satisfy almost any interest, any time of year! Just stroll along Clear Creek and you'll see so much. In the spring, the kayakers will be braving the whitewater rapids. Near the history park's old wooden buildings you might catch sight of grade-schoolers participating in a Spring Break history

camp. On the less serious side of things, you might check out the Colorado School of Mines students attempting their annual cardboard boat race across the creek. Things get ... mushy ... quickly. Then there's the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Parfet Park. Moving into summer, and you can see the annual Golden Games take place in and along the banks of Clear Creek, featuring some of the most skilled flyfishers, slackliners and standup paddleboarders in the region. The monthly Golden Bicycle Cruise riders, including quite a few still sporting training wheels, zip by you

in the evening, while the sounds of a live band, and family movie playing in Parfet Park echoes up the creek. During Buffalo Bill Days, you can catch part of the parade procession cross the Washington Street Bridge, then head upstream to see the wild west show at the ballfields.
