Community Wildfire Protection Plan Updated
City of Golden Updates Community Wildfire Protection Plan
Jefferson County to Update Emergency Notification System
The Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) was recently updated by Golden Fire & Rescue in 2021 to address the threat of wildfire to the City of Golden based on lessons learned and technology developments since the Plan’s last update in 2007. The Plan identifies fire risks facing the community, and outlines actions to mitigate those risks and prepare for community evacuation in the event of a wildfire. The updated plan can be found at www.cityofgolden.net/city-services/wildfireprotection-plan/.
The City of Golden, nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains, mesas and grasslands, is a city with the convenience of urban life and almost instant access to wildlands. Firefighters call this “wildland urban interface.” This area of transition presents a unique risk to those who live on the edges of Golden and a unique challenge for the Golden Fire Department.
The Community Wildfire Protection Plan focuses on three key strategies to keep the City of Golden safe from wildfire:
1. Mitigation: Taking measures to minimize risk of structure ignition through home features, landscaping design, outdoor storage practices and vegetation maintenance on one’s property. 2. Notification: Educating community members to help ensure they are signed up for Jefferson County’s emergency notification program at Your911.net and that it is activated in a timely manner. 3. Evacuation: Building coordinated neighborhood plans to evacuate community members in an orderly fashion in the event of a wildfire and educating members of the public about those plans.
Implementing the strategies outlined in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan will require coordination among the Golden Fire Department, other key City of Golden departments, Jefferson County, many other stakeholders, and the community at large in Golden. Golden Fire & Rescue and the City of Golden will hold community meetings in Spring and Summer 2022 to review the Community Wildfire Protection Plan in detail, answer questions from residents, and document ideas and feedback submitted for further consideration.
It should also be noted that Jefferson County’s opt-in emergency alerting / notification platform is changing from CodeRed to Rave Alert on April 1. If you have signed up with CodeRed in the past, your information will transfer to the new platform, however you are encouraged to update this information to ensure phone number(s) and e-mail addresses are still valid. Further information related to the 2021 CWPP and Rave Alert can be found on our website at www.cityofgolden.net/government/departments-divisions/ fire.
