Mayor Lord Receives Honorary Degree Congratulations to Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord for receiving an honorary degree from Franklin Pierce University. Mayor Lord received a Doctor of Public Administration in honor of the impact she’s had on creating a sustainable future for Goodyear, one of the fastest growing cities in the country. “I am greatly humbled to serve as a testament to the value of contributing to one’s community and serving in a profession with commitment and compassion,” said Mayor Lord. “This recognition is really an acknowledgement of the city and the councilmembers. I was proud to have accepted under the auspices of the city.” Franklin Pierce University opened a campus in Goodyear in 2008.

I found my passion in local government and hope when you find your passion, you have the courage to advocate for your beliefs.

From the Mayor The community is starting to buzz as a new school year begins and I can already tell that it’s going to be another great year for Goodyear students. As teachers meet their new students and begin enriching the minds of our future generations, I want to remind you of what a phenomenal group of Mayor Georgia Lord educators, support staff and school leaders we have in Goodyear! Our schools are excelling and have so much to celebrate. I look forward to hearing of new accomplishments throughout the school year. Four elementary school districts, two high school districts, and several other dedicated public charter schools serve our community and offer quality education to ensure a successful future for each and every student. We have schools across the city and at various levels, outperforming on state tests, receiving A ratings, and winning national awards.

Council Corner It is hard to believe that summer break has come to an end and our kids are heading back to school. This is such an exciting time as students begin a new chapter in their lives and Council Member continue to flourish and grow Sheri Lauritano developmentally, socially and intellectually. Education is an integral part of our community and a significant component of the city. As a parent and a councilmember, I know that quality education and the academic success of our children is not only vital for their future, but also for the continued growth of Goodyear. It is of the utmost importance to the council, our residents, and prospective residents, that our families have access to great educational opportunities. I am proud that the city is home to six outstanding school districts. We also have many great public charter schools, which offer our families additional

Our schools are important city partners and we value their effort to better our community through education. Each day our kids continue to develop a career path without even realizing it. While in the classroom, they explore their interests and strengthen skills that will contribute to decisions later on in life. I hope one day, they’ll choose Goodyear as a place to grow their future as adults. Goodyear is home to higher education, too. Columbia College and Franklin Pierce University are committed to helping students achieve their goals by offering courses right in the heart of our city. We wouldn’t have the talented workforce we see today without the high-quality education provided by all of our Goodyear educators. A robust workforce allows us to attract new employers which leads to even more development in our city. Overall, our schools help to boost our city’s development! I am so grateful for the essential work provided by all of our dedicated teachers. Their commitment to our community positively affects the growth of our city, and we are here to support their efforts wherever possible.

educational options. With so many different districts and schools impacting our city, residents and students, it’s important that we look for opportunities to collaborate. An example of this ongoing commitment to collaborate, is the annual Goodyear City Council Building Blocks to Great Schools education roundtable. Every spring, representatives from city council, various city departments, and educational leaders meet to discuss ideas and opportunities to work together. The roundtable provides an open forum for relationship building among schools and the city with the shared goal of enhancing collaboration. This great partnership has helped launch a nationally recognized school resource officer program, reading programs, and arts and culture partnerships between the schools and the city. By working together and identifying areas of shared interest, the city and our schools can seamlessly work together to ensure the best educational outcomes for our kids. I am excited about this school year and can’t wait to see what our kids will accomplish next! August 2019

Why

Schools share why they chose to expand into Goodyear

“Legacy Traditional Schools has a strong tradition of building lasting relationships in the communities where our students, teachers, and staff call home. As a Goodyear resident, I am especially proud to be a part of our first-ever Goodyear campus and to help bring an exceptional education and a lifetime love of learning to our community.” BRITTANY KLEINOW

PRINCIPAL AT LEGACY TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS – GOODYEAR

“Somerset Academy is excited to be a new school in the growing Goodyear community. The Somerset family has a high regard for educating our youth and we are not just dreamers creating possibilities with our thoughts; we are doers, creating results with our actions!” JENNIFER CARMICHAEL

PRINCIPAL AT SOMERSET ACADEMY – SKYWAY CAMPUS

Mabel Padgett Elementary School in Goodyear is named after the first teacher in the Litchfield Elementary School District. In 1917, Mrs. Mabel Padgett, wife of John Padgett an Engineer for Goodyear Farms, welcomed 11 students to the first day of school. Enrollment continued to increase and in 2018, the community approved a bond to build Litchfield Elementary School.

Did You Know?

Litchfield Elementary School District now includes 16 schools that span across Goodyear, Avondale, Buckeye and Litchfield Park. Mabel Padgett Elementary School opened in 2010 and today has 625 students.

Campus # Police + Security = 1 PRIORITY Goodyear

Protecting schools is a top priority for the Goodyear Police Department. “I believe children should have a safe school environment where they can focus on learning rather than being concerned about safety,” said Goodyear Police Chief Jerry Geier. That’s why officers are in every high school as part of the School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) program. A Goodyear Police Officer is assigned to each of the three high schools in the city; Estrella Foothills, Desert Edge and Millennium. An officer is also dedicated to the middle and elementary schools.

Mabel Padgett, Centerra Mirage and Westar elementary schools also serve as School Police Substations. The substations serve as an office space for officers on duty. It allows them to complete paperwork and other work-related tasks, while ultimately providing greater police presence at the school.

Goodyear provides a unique opportunity to teens eager to play a role in local government, or to learn more about it. The Goodyear Youth Commission helps students develop leadership skills through involvement in city government and creates a format for students to express their voice on a variety of youthrelated issues. Those include youth programming, recreation opportunities, and special events.

Congrats to the 2019-2020 Goodyear Youth Commission

“These students are the future leaders of our city, and their input on programs and services offered by the city is valued tremendously,” said Mayor Georgia Lord. “It is important for our youth to become engaged now rather than later, and I have great confidence in them.”

A temporary art gallery featuring local student artwork is days away from opening! The students created their pieces, some 3D, in the Goodyear Follow Your Art Junior summer program. The classes were taught by artist and Goodyear resident Gayle Glenn. She encourages students to expand their creative ideas, technical potential, and to create more complex visual statements while studying art and artists historically as well as working one-on-one with other artists. The student art gallery runs from Aug 7-31 at the Goodyear Library.
