Weigh anchor at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands – located approximately 60km off the Geraldton coast, the Islands comprise three major island groups, the Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert Groups stretching from north to south across 100 kilometres of ocean. An archipelago of 122 coral islands with crystal blue waters and an abundance of sea life make a visit to the Houtman Abrolhos Islands a must for all visitors to Geraldton.

THE BATAVIA In 1629 the Batavia was shipwrecked on Morning Reef in the Wallabi Group. Commander Francisco Pelsaert and select crew set off in the ship’s longboat to seek help and those left endured one of the most horrific mutinies in history.

SHIPWRECKS According to the Australian National Shipwreck Database there are 52 shipwrecks recorded off the Abrolhos Islands from the sailing vessel Batavia in 1629 to the Southern Cross trawler in 1971.

SNORKEL OR DIVE Coral reefs, sea life, and the warm waters of the Leeuwin Current make for pleasant snorkelling and diving. The Batavia shipwreck lies in shallow waters and is ‘the’ number one dive spot in Western Australia.

PEARLS The pearls cultivated from the Houtman Abrolhos Islands are becoming increasingly popular. From the Akoya to the Black Lipped Pearl and a variety of colours in between.

LOBSTER A sort after delicacy, the waters around the Abrolhos are an important breeding site for the Western Rock Lobster.

FISHING Recreational fishing is permitted around the Islands within allocated seasons. For regulations and licenses please contact the Department of Fisheries.

MAMMALS, BIRDS, REPTILES, SEALIFE AND FLORA The Houtman Abrolhos Islands mark the northern most habitats of the Australian Sea Lion. Other mammals include the Tammar Wallaby, bush rat, dolphins and migrating whales. The Islands are among Australia’s most important sites for breeding seabirds such as the Noddies Shearwaters and Terns. There are 26 terrestrial species of reptiles, many endemic to the Abrolhos including skinks, geckos, snakes and the Marine Green Turtle. There is also an abundance of sea life including fish and shark species, coral, seagrasses and more. Finally there are over 140 species of native flora on the Islands and all are classified as protected.

S R E W WIL DFLO

There are more than 12,000 species of wildflowers in WA, making our state home to the world’s largest collection of wildflowers. In fact, 60% of Western Australian wildflowers are found nowhere else on earth! Greater Geraldton is in the heart of wildflower country, making it the perfect launch pad to explore these breathtaking fields of colour.

WHEN CAN I SEE THE WILDFLOWERS? Wildflower season is usually between late July to early October.

WHERE CAN I SEE THE WILDFLOWERS? Base yourself in Geraldton as a base to explore north to Kalbarri National Park, and east to experience the excitement of finding the unique Wreath Flowers around Mullewa and fields of colourful Everlastings in the Coalseam Conservation Park.

KALBARRI NATIONAL PARK Kalbarri National Park is home to breathtaking coastal cliffs and deep river gorges. The National Park has roughly 800 species of native flora, many of which are endemic, including the coveted Kalbarri spider orchid. Don’t forget the Coastal Cliffs, where the walkways and trails are lit up with colour.

GERALDTON, CHAPMAN VALLEY AND NORTHAMPTON Take a walk in Geraldton’s Chapman River Regional 14

Park, home to flowers, birds and reptiles. Join the guided walks offered on the weekend. Ask the Visitor Centre for times and dates. Just north of Geraldton is Chapman Valley and Yuna where wildflowers and everlastings abound on the roadside. If travelling on the weekend, stop into Nanson, visit the Burnt Barrel for a gourmet outback barbecue and handcrafted beer. Heading north to Kalbarri? Make sure to stop at Northampton’s Elephant Lookout for a number of wild orchids at Oakabella Homestead.

MULLEWA AND MINGENEW Head to Mingenew and Three Springs for an abundance of unique wreath flowers, everlastings, hakea and more - check with local information centres. Travelling north between Mingenew and Mullewa is a wildflower ‘must-do’ - the Coalseam Conservation Park. The park is THE hot spot for everlasting carpets with stunning white, pink and yellow everlastings as far as the eye can see.

In Mullewa, explore the Everlasting Cultural Trails, rich with blooming flora and history. When entering, look along the highway for bush flowers and orange daviesia (the bacon and egg flower).

East of Mullewa is Pindar where wreath flowers are common along the roadside and Canna where orchids and everlasting fields bloom. West of Mullewa is Tenindewa where yellow gentlemen’s buttons and everlastings grow wild.
