2023 has been declared the "Year of the Trail" by the General Assembly and the Great Trails State Coalition (www.greattrailsstatecoalition.org).
High Point Parks & Recreation is joining the NC Recreation and Parks Association and departments like ours across the state in this year-long campaign to raise awareness about the trails in our area and region and the importance they play in our lives. • Seasonal park attendants to operate the train, carousel and concessions at High Point City Lake Park
• Seasonal park attendants to beautify parks and facilities such as Blair Park and Oak Hollow Golf courses, Oak Hollow Tennis Center and in parks maintenance
• Summer camp counselors at our recreation centers and Camp Ann
• Seasonal naturalist at Piedmont Environmental Center
• Assistant pool managers, lifeguards and pool attendants at High Point City Lake Park and Washington Terrace pools

Discovery Sports Camp (Ages 6 - 9 & 10 - 12)
Discovery Summer Sports camp is an opportunity for athletes to learn new skills and sharpen their abilities over the summer. Staff and camp counselors with vast sports experience will facilitate this exciting program!

Summer Day Camps (Rising Grades 1 - 6)
The perfect place to make new friends, try new things and just have lots of fun! Rising first - sixth graders will enjoy favorite camp activities, including arts & crafts, field trips, team sports and much more. Be prepared for plenty of laughs, smiles and adventures! Campers will receive a t-shirt.

Summer Tennis Camps (Ages 6 - 18)
This camp for beginners covers all the basic skills of tennis, enabling each player to move to the next level. Learn how to keep score, learn the rules and etiquette of the game and learn how to rally and play points against one another to make learning the game fun and easy!
Our Intermediate Camp players are near the competitive level. Emphasis on point play will be stressed, as well as proper technique and court movement. These players are beginning to understand the importance of more serious tennis focus and play.

Trailblazers Camp (Rising Grades 7 - 9)
Summer camp for older campers offers opportunities to develop leadership skills and a passion for recreation. Ours is filled with arts & crafts, field trips, team sports and much more. Be prepared to have tons of fun with plenty of laughs, smiles and adventures! Campers will receive a t-shirt. No camp Monday, June 19 or Tuesday, July 4.

High Performance Summer Camp (Ages 14 - 18)
If you are interested in competing at the high school or tournament level, this tennis camp will help prepare you for success! Comprised of drills and competitive play, our focus is on developing footwork, fitness, technique, rallying skills and competitive tactics and strategy.

Junior Bug Camp (Ages 6 - 8)
Learn about insects that dig, crawl and fly, and how to safely catch, examine and release insects using nets, collection jars and other tools of the junior entomologist. Explore six habitats and collect insects to be entered into the "Bug Olympics" events at the end of the day.

Junior Rock Camp (Ages 6 - 8)
Spend the day "hounding" for rocks and minerals on the trails and in a mineral lab. Four activities and three hikes help campers understand the rock cycle and the geology of the Piedmont region. Gather a collection of samples to take home at the end of the day.

Junior Fish Camp (Ages 6 - 8)
Meet at High Point City Lake Park for a full day of learning about the lake environment and fishing. At the beginning of the day, campers will learn how to cast using PEC's fishing poles, then walk to two fishing spots along the shore of the lake. We will help campers learn to identify and measure the fish they catch. Campers will use aquatic nets to collect organisms from the lake.

Junior Bird Camp (Ages 6 - 8)
Learn the tips and tricks of observing birds. Visit five bird habitats and keep a checklist of your observations. Learn how to use binoculars and spotting scopes while participating in a scientific study of birds using the feeders.

Spend the day studying snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, toads and salamanders. Using survey and observation techniques, explore all of the "herp" habitats at PEC and practice safe ways to study reptiles and amphibians.

Summer Nature Camp (Ages 8 - 12)
Campers become junior resource managers of "homeland" territories while playing a land-use simulation game called Common Ground. Adventures on the trails and supporting activities in the classroom give a greater understanding of how plants and animals form communities much like our own. On Wednesdays, camp will meet at High Point City Lake Park for a day of nature study, fishing and swimming at the new pool. Thursdays will offer an optional late pick-up at 8:30 p.m. that will include dinner, evening hike and activities. Camp will conclude at noon on Friday. Middle School Camp (Ages 12 - 15)
Session 1 - Advanced Nature Camp - NC Sandhills
Resembling what the southeastern U.S. looked like 200 years ago, this region of our state still supports many unusual and endangered species. We will radio-track northern pine snakes and eastern coachwhip snakes on the game lands, watch endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers as they forage among towering old growth longleaf pines, wade into a wild Carolina bay where egret and anhinga rookery continue to thrive, canoe paddle a section of the Lumber River and actively observe a controlled burn in progress.

Session 2 - Geo-Chem Camp
From observing rapid borax crystal formation, building a hydrogen-fuel-cell model car to extracting their own DNA using common household supplies, campers gain a greater understanding of geology and environmental chemistry during this experience. Eight geo-chem experiments serve as leads into group activities and hikes on the trails that examine contemporary environmental challenges.

This program teaches youth, teens and adults with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities the foundational skills of baseball through game play, sportsmanship and social engagement with peers. R.E.D. Zone youth football league and cheer teams are back for a fourth season! This partnership between the High Point, Greensboro and Thomasville Parks & Recreation departments focuses on recreation, education & development, or "R.E.D." The new season will offer more teams, new faces, a community-driven focus and minimal travel. Bud Kivett Memorial City Golf Championship (Ages 16+)
Celebrating its 47th anniversary this year, the Bud Kivett Memorial City Golf Championship is a 36-hole, stroke-play event open to the first 216 amateur golfers who enter. Play will take place over the beautiful Oak Hollow and Blair Park Golf courses, which have been rated in the top 75 public courses in the U.S. Championship. Flight winner will receive a beautiful trophy emblematic of this victory. Pro Shop gift certificates will be awarded to the top finishers in each flight.

Celebrating its 35th year, entries in this tournament are open to the first 100 teams of amateur golfers. Seniors (ages 55+) will play from the white tees. This tournament also features a Par 3 Challenge with the closest to the pin on all par threes both days. The entry fee does not include green fee or cart fee. Application and entry fee must arrive by noon on Friday, May 26. Over $14,000 in prizes and gift certificates will be awarded!

Bats & Bugs Night Walk (All Ages)
For the two hours following sunset, there is a "changing of the guard" in the natural world. Giant moths replace butterflies in the search for mates, night-adapted insects forage and fly, while bats hunt them instead of birds. PEC's naturalist will guide program participants on an interpretive wildlife hike around the pond and lakeshore trail, watching for bats as they visit an insect-attracting station to see which of the bats' favorite foods may have been attracted to the scent baits and visual lures.

Community Advance Directive Clinic (Ages 50+)
In honor of National Advance Healthcare Decision Day, this clinic will give older adults the opportunity to receive information about advance directives, complete healthcare power of attorney and living will documents with social workers and a notary to assist with the process. High Point Greenway
The High Point Greenway is a 4.9-mile paved trail beginning at Armstrong Park (305 East Parkway Ave.) and ending at Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).
High Point City Lake Park Trail - 0.5 miles (connects High Point City Lake Park with the Piedmont Environmental Center)
Bicentennial Greenway
The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.
Natural Surface Trails
High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).
Southwest Heritage Greenway
This .44-mile paved trail runs between Vail Avenue and Grimes Avenue, with parking located at the Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave.). From Taylor Avenue to Grimes Avenue, enjoy the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, a helixshaped walkway that combines art with nature.
West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail
A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.
Urban Hikes
In partnership with the High Point Library, we've created an Urban Hikes Map with eight trails starting from the High Point Public Library. All the hikes are accessible by sidewalk.

Aderholdt Track (High Point Athletic Complex): one loop = .25 miles
Allen Jay Recreation Center and Park (1073 E. Springfield Road): one loop = .5 miles
Burnett Park (1051 Montlieu Ave.): one loop = .3 miles
Washington Street Park (738 Washington St.): one loop around playground = .10 mile
Washington Terrace Park (101 Gordon St.): one loop = .3 miles
