HISTORICALSOCIETY HOSTSNCPRESERVATION CEOBENJAMINBRIGGS
The High Point Historical Society hosted its monthly program series on May 15 at the High Point Museum. This month's topic was " Preservation in High Point and Across Our State” by Benjamin Briggs, President and CEO of Preservation North Carolina. Briggs discussed his preservation work in High Point and across North Carolina.
Briggs is a native of High Point and is descended from a family who crafted buggies and later wood furniture. Raised as a Quaker, he earned a degree in architecture and sociology from North Carolina State University. After working briefly in construction, Briggs purchased and restored the fire-damaged Ecker House in High Point. This project led to his recognition by Preservation North Carolina (PNC) through a Gertrude Carraway Award of Merit in 1993.
His second project was a large Quaker farmhouse in High Point, recognized for its owner’s role in the Underground Railroad. As it neared completion, he was accepted to Boston University, where he earned a master’s degree in historic preservation.
He taught historic preservation at Randolph Community College before stepping down in 2003 to serve as executive director of Preservation Greensboro Incorporated. He joined Preservation North Carolina as its President and CEO in 2023.
MUSEUMRECEIVESNORTH CAROLINAMUSEUMCOUNCIL AWARD
High Point Museum is pleased to announce that it is a recipient of the 2024 North Carolina Museums Council Award of Excellence for its exhibition “Fields & Feathers: Hunting at Deep River Lodge, 1895-1935.” The NCMC awards program promotes excellence in North Carolina museums and related institutions. Eight awards were presented for work completed in 2023, selected through peer review.
“Fields & Feathers” was co-curated by the High Point Museum and Shanna Moore. It shared the story of Deep River Lodge, the families who owned it and the many people who worked there. The exhibition featured photos and artifacts from Deep River Lodge, including professional photographs of the prize-winning dogs and the lodge’s visitors out on hunts. Many items left at the estate after its closure were also on view, such as travel trunks filled with clothing and accouterments, dog crates, books and passenger tickets from steamship travel with the dogs.

LIBRARYTEACHING GARDENCELEBRATES10TH
ANNIVERSARY
High Point Public Library celebrated the tenth anniversary of the dedication of the Teaching Garden in April. The garden continues to make a positive contribution to the health and education of the greater High Point community.
From its initial conception of a way to teach people how to grow and cultivate their food
to its expansion into exploring innovative growing methods and expansion to promote habitats for butterflies and bees and providing handicapped accessible garden beds, this program has become an important part of the library’s programming. Produce from the garden has been used in the library’s teaching kitchen to offer children’s and family cooking lessons to demonstrate how to use fresh produce to make delicious meals.
The garden has sought to contribute to aiding the issue of food insecurity in the community by donating produce from the gardens to local food pantries, including the Salvation Army, Triad Health Project, D-Up, and West End Ministries. Produce was also donated to the YWCA for their teaching kitchen for the food-related programs and teaching sessions they offered to families in the community.
Congratulations to the two MVPs from this season’s Adult Basketball League: Skylar McGee, our “BIG 6 Conference MVP” from the Strickland Brothers Team, and Terrell Leach, the “PAC 6 Conference MVP,” representing Team GOATS!

Congratulations, and welcome to our new park ranger! Ranger C.J. Stroupe joins the High Point Parks & Recreation team from the Archdale Police Department. She loves the outdoors and has always had a passion for serving in public safety. The team is happy to have her working with us to help keep our parks and facilities safe.
Special thanks to our local Bojangles for its generous donation of $500 to support the Miracle League of High Point! They also brought some of their delicious new "Bird Dogs" to share with our athletes, volunteers and families.
Miracle League is a baseball program that provides youth, teens and adults
with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball in an organized league. If you'd like to learn more, please reach out to High Point Parks & Recreation's ASPIRE staff at 336.883.3483 or email Timpani Troxler at timpani.lopp@highpointnc.gov.
