Parents & Toddlers: The Tiny Natural World (Ages 3 - 5)
Parents and toddlers will explore nature’s tiny natural world with a PEC naturalist, examining and learning about micro-ecosystems using hand lenses and magnifying glasses. Afterwards, we will create a small terrarium to take home! Piedmont Environmental Center Saturday, Sept. 10, 9 - 11 a.m. $5 per participant Twilight Hike (Ages 6+)
Beat the heat of the day and join a PEC naturalist on an evening hike through the forest. We will listen for hooting owls and barking bullfrogs and look for nocturnal mammals such as raccoons and beavers. The full moon will light our path, but participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes for safety. Summer is winding down, birds have finished molting and many have begun their southern migration. Take a hike with a PEC naturalist and discover the birds in late summer that call the Piedmont home, or are just passing through. PEC bird hikes are open to all beginners and experienced birdwatchers. Binoculars are available to those that need them. Community Garden @ Morehead (Ages 18+)
Community gardens provide opportunities for people to work side by side towards improving food security, increasing fruit and vegetable intake and leading healthier lives. Participants will donate 10 percent of their harvests to food organizations. Morehead Recreation Center Monday - Sunday, July 1 - Nov. 30, 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. $20 per plot Fall Leaf Kayak Tour (Ages 16+)
Enjoy a guided kayak tour of the lovely Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. City Lake during its most scenic season. On our tour, facilitated by PEC Park Supervisor Dick Thomas, we will see an abundance of beautiful seasonal colors with the changing of the leaves; we may even see some wildlife! Sunset Paddles (Ages 16+)
Enjoy a guided sunset tour by kayak, with the light of the bright summer moon as a guide. Dragonflies are among Earth’s oldest living insects, inhabiting the planet for over 300,000,000 years. As expert predators, they capture and eat gnats, flies and mosquitos on the wing, and are also cannibalistic. Diverse and beautiful, these insects are fascinating! We will have a brief slide program highlighting aspects of their biology, then venture into the field for a firsthand, up-close and personal look.
