Discovery Summer Sports Camp is an opportunity for athletes to learn new skills and sharpen their abilities over the summer. Staff and camp counselors with vast sports experience will facilitate this exciting program!

The perfect place to make new friends, try new things and just have lots of fun! Trailblazers Camp (Rising Grades 7 - 9)
Summer camp for older campers offers opportunities to develop leadership skills and a passion for recreation. Ours is filled with arts & crafts, field trips, team sports and so much more. Campers will receive a t-shirt.

Summer Tennis Camps (Ages 6 - 18)
This camp for beginners covers all the basic skills of tennis, enabling each player to move to the next level. Learn how to keep score, learn the rules and etiquette of the game and learn how to rally and play points against one another to make learning the game fun and easy!
Our Intermediate Camp players are near the competitive level. Emphasis on point play will be stressed, as well as proper technique and court movement.

Junior Nature Camps (Ages 6 - 8)
Junior Bug Camp
Campers spend the day learning about insects that dig, crawl and fly! Campers will learn how to safely catch, examine and release insects using nets, collection jars and other tools of the junior entomologist.

Junior Rock Camp
Campers spend the day "hounding" for rocks and minerals on the trails and in a mineral lab. Four activities and three hikes help campers understand the rock cycle and the geology of the Piedmont region.

Junior Fish Camp
Campers will enjoy a full day of learning about the lake environment and fishing. Campers will learn how to cast using PEC's fishing poles, then fish along the shore of the lake.

Junior Bird Camp
Campers spend the day learning the tips and tricks of observing birds from the staff naturalists at PEC. Campers will visit five bird habitats and keep a checklist of the observations they make.

Junior Herpetology Camp
Campers spend the day studying snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, toads and salamanders under the supervision of PEC's staff naturalists. Using a variety of survey and observation techniques, campers will explore all of the "herp" habitats at PEC and practice safe ways to study reptiles and amphibians.

Summer Nature Camp (Ages 8 - 12)
Piedmont Environmental Center's summer nature camps are specifically designed for children who have a sincere interest in nature and the environment. Campers become junior resource managers of "homeland" territories while playing a land-use simulation game called Common Ground. Hiking adventures on the trails and supporting activities in the classroom give campers a greater understanding of how plants and animals form communities much like our own. On Wednesdays, camp will meet at High Point City Lake Park for a day of nature study, fishing and swimming.

Aqua Camp (Ages 12 - 15)
Aqua Camp is an opportunity for middle school students to get hands-on learning through an environmental education field experience at PEC. By the end of the program, participants will have gained an understanding of their impact on water resources and learn their responsibility for water resource stewardship.

After School Program (Grades K - 5)
Our after school programs offer a variety of activities, including homework time, gym games, arts & crafts, outside play and other planned activities. Parents are responsible for daily snacks. All after school programs follow Guilford County Schools traditional calendar and schedule for inclement weather-related closures.

School bus transportation is provided from Allen Jay Elementary and Allen Jay Prep (fifth grade). Parents need to arrange school bus transportation at their child's school. Transportation is provided from Triangle Lake Montessori, Union Hill Elementary and Jamestown Elementary Schools. We accept drop-offs from home or other schools.
Deep River Recreation Center
Transportation is provided from Southwest Elementary, Phoenix Academy, Florence Elementary and Colfax Elementary. We accept drop-offs from home or other schools.
Oakview Recreation Center
Transportation is provided from Oakview Elementary, Shadybrook Elementary, Johnson Street Global Studies, Montlieu Academy of Technology, Northwood Elementary and Kirkman Park Elementary. We accept drop-offs from home or other schools.

Sports After School Program (Grades 1 - 5)
The Morehead Discovery Sports After School Program is designed to develop and improve the all-around sports skill sets of each participant. Through drills and practice, participants will learn the fundamentals of a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional sports and games, as well as teamwork and sportsmanship. The result will be an ability to play sports in pickup or recreational play settings and sufficient instruction to try out and play for an organized team.

The practice of yoga offers a multitude of benefits. It can help lower blood pressure, increase relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety levels. Learn a new sport or sharpen your skills! Pickleball is easy for beginners to learn but can develop into a fast-paced and competitive game for experienced players. Participants need to have good balance and agility and be able to move quickly on the court. Preregistration is required.

Chair Yoga (Ages 50+)
Participants will work on improving flexibility and strength, focus on improving balance in standing poses and developing mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Participants should be able to maintain both seated and standing positions with the assistance of a chair.

The practice of yoga offers a multitude of benefits. It helps with breathing and posture, as well as meditation to integrate your mind. Stretching, bending and balancing help align the head, neck and spine. Yoga can also stimulate the circulatory system while keeping muscles and joints strong and flexible. Studies show that yoga may help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure and anxiety levels. It induces relaxation and can be useful in pain management. Registration is required for this program. Beginners are welcome!

Youth Fishing Derby (Ages 1 - 15)

International Migratory Bird Day (Ages 13+)
One of the most fascinating miracles in the natural world is bird migration. No mention of migration is complete without recognizing the tremendous migratory feat of the arctic tern. Flying 60,000 miles each year, this Olympian migrates from one end of the earth to the other and then miraculously returns to its exact location of departure. This program takes place on International Migratory Bird Day and highlights the extraordinary feat of bird migration. Heading into the woods to identify migrants and resident bird species will conclude this engaging event.

Cicada Slumber: The Great Emergence (Ages 13+)
Have you heard about the big emergence? After spending 13 years living under the ground, this summer, the 13-year cicada (referred to as Brood XIX) will claw its way to the surface by the thousands and change into a quite bizarrelooking adult. Often they create an almost deafening sound as they make this amazing transition. Discover what factors led to this very unusual life cycle as we learn more about Brood XIX cicadas through a presentation and hands-on activities, including an outdoor walk in search of some cicadas to catch and examine more closely.

Zipping around ponds and lakes and flying with great speed and agility over fields and through the woods, dragonflies are a marvel of nature. They spend their first months as nondragonfly looking larvae and then transform into impressive adults capable of great speed as they effortlessly snatch other insects out of the air. They also come in an astonishing range of sizes, colors and behaviors. We will discuss the natural history of the dragonfly, then head to the field to catch and examine them closely.

At the height of birds singing, flowers blooming and insects humming, it is a great time to take a discovery hike on the trails to discover the spring season. The morning hike takes place on the trails of the South Preserve, while the afternoon hike will explore the trails of the North Preserve. Advance registration is required for these walks. Invasive plants have become a serious threat to intact ecosystems, and a threat to many of our native species. These introduced plants often become difficult to eradicate, and they can seriously alter balanced, intact ecosystems. Participants will learn to identify 20 invasive species and understand how they became a part of our landscape.

Over three dozen species of wildflowers have been sowed, and many have germinated in PEC's greenhouse. Purple coneflower, milkweed and black-eyed Susan are just a few of the many seedlings that will be available for 75 cents each. Friends of PEC members are welcome to purchase early on Friday, May 10 from 1 - 5 p.m. Any leftover seedlings will be available for sale at our event on National Trails Day, June 1.

What’s that animal track? Do you ever wonder who left a track behind in your yard or along a trail? This family-friendly tracking adventure will take you onto the trails in search of tracks, where you will create a mold of the discovered track to take home. Juneteenth Jubilee (Ages 10 - 13)
Juneteenth is a time for reflection, remembrance and celebration. We will meet at Becky's and Mary's, one of High Point's oldest black-owned restaurants and located in a historic black community, for lunch as we discuss the hard history of slavery and the fight for freedom. There is no fee to attend, but participants are asked to purchase their own meal and to respect the thoughts and input of other attendees.

High Point City Lake Park Trail - 0.5 miles (This trail connects High Point City Lake Park with the Piedmont Environmental Center)
Bicentennial Greenway
The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.
Natural Surface Trails
High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).
Southwest Heritage Greenway
This .44-mile paved trail runs between Vail Avenue and Grimes Avenue, with parking located at the Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave.). From Taylor Avenue to Grimes Avenue, enjoy the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, a helixshaped walkway that combines art with nature.
West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail
A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.
Urban Hikes
In partnership with the High Point Library, we've created an Urban Hikes Map with eight trails starting from the High Point Public Library. All the hikes are accessible by sidewalk.
