A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR… Dear Citizens, What a great year we had in the City in 2018! We were able to sustain our low crime rate, keep the city clean, continue a high level of services for you, our citizens, and maintain financial stability. Just think what Jonesboro could be if YOU become active! Join us as we work toward improving our City. We need people with special interests, talents, and expertise to serve on boards and volunteer. More than that, we need people with a passion for Jonesboro and seeing it shine... I know there is a great deal of untapped genius out there. The amount of commitment would be just a few hours (sometimes 1-2) per month. No involvement is too small...You will meet new friends, contribute to a better community (yours), and learn what makes Jonesboro tick! Information about joining the J-TEAM is contained in this newsletter. Give it a shot...I look forward to seeing you! Joy B. Day, Mayor METRO ATLANTA SPEAKS Survey Reveals Priorities for Planning and Decision-Making

Each year, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) and its partners conduct the METRO ATLANTA SPEAKS survey of metro Atlanta residents to help guide the region’s planning. The 2018 survey showed the following: •TOP CONCERN: Transportation (28%). Second was Crime (22%) and Public Education (9%) •Nearly half the respondents (48%) said expanding public transit is the best long-term traffic solution., with improving roads and highways (28%) a distant second. •Metro Atlanta’s improving economy was also reflected in this year’s survey. Only 6% said economy is the biggest problem facing the region, compared to 9% last year and 24% in 2013. •Nearly 90% of respondents said they are paying more than they should be for housing. The top reasons given include quality of location, quality of neighborhood, and lack of affordable housing. •Half the respondents said they’d be willing to pay more taxes to expand public transit. GOLF CART REGISTRATIONS IN CITY David Allen, Community Development Director

In October 2018, the Mayor and City Council revised registration procedures for golf carts operating in the City. A new $25 annual registration fee was adopted for City residents, and a new application was prepared. Registration decals must be affixed to the sides of golf carts. Golf cart owners need to have their registrations completed by February 15th. Golf carts must be demonstrated to be in good working order, including exhaust systems for gas-powered carts. The Mayor and Council also included a provision in the Cart Ordinance for non-City residents to be able to register their carts for use within the City limits. Questions about cart usage within the City can be answered by calling City Hall at (770) 478-3800.

The Clayton County Humane Society Animal Shelter provides a home for animals who have been abandoned. As animals come to the shelter, they are checked by a veterinarian and given all necessary vaccines and any other treatment that’s needed. At the shelter they are well loved by staff and a great group of volunteers. Dogs are taken outside for playtime and for walks. When you adopt your dog he/she will be well socialized. Cats have visitors who sit in the cat room with them playing with toys or providing a lap to be petted in. It is a very good temporary home for the animals who just want to be loved. Charlemagne is a beautiful cat with distinctive markings! She loves to be around people and wants a special home. All her siblings have left and she needs to be loved. Cordelia is a cute little terrier mix who really wants a home and someone to love just her. She is the perfect size for an apartment. Could you be her forever family?

City Council Votes at January Council Meeting to Approve Launching of Arts & Entertainment District With approval of an Arts & Entertainment District in the central downtown area, the designation will enable the City to expand permitting for businesses or organizations seeking to move into the area, restrict construction of incompatible operations such as gas stations, or auto repair shops, and establish a zone for food trucks in the downtown area to attract diners. Creation of the new district comes as Jonesboro seeks to revive its downtown and provide a walkable community with amenities for its citizens.
