Jerry Graham 1952-2020
IN MEMORY of Lucy Cline Huie A Life Well-Lived (1921-2020) Lucy Cline Huie, a longtime resident of Jonesboro died peacefully on September 27 at age 99. She first lived in Jonesboro at age 12 when her father, a Methodist minister, served the Jonesboro church. She was a graduate of Wesleyan College and Emory University. She worked as librarian at Agnes Scott College until WWII when she served in an army hospital throughout the war. Lucy married Arthur Huie, a local farmer and artist, in 1946 and settled in Jonesboro. Over many decades Lucy was active in community service taking leadership roles including Scouts, League of Women Voters, Toastmasters, Historical Jonesboro, Pen & Pica Writers Group, Great Books discussion groups, and Alexandrian Institute. Over her lifetime in Jonesboro, she participated in the Presbyterian and Methodist churches and the work of the Salvation Army. Lucy had a key role as Chair of the Library Board in the 1960s in establishing libraries in Jonesboro, Riverdale, and College Park. With her husband Arthur, she was active in the Georgia Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s as an organizer of HOPE (Help Our Public Education) which advocated keeping public schools open for all people during desegregation. Because of these activities the Ku Klux Klan repeatedly burned crosses in her yard and scholar Philip Callaway interviewed on tape many of those who had been involved in Civil Rights conflicts. Those recordings are archived in the Special Collection of Emory University. In the 1950s Lucy learned to fly a small airplane. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, she joined a group devoted to researching parapsychology, earned a degree in Nutrition, became a public speaker and helped to develop The American Heritage division of Historical Jonesboro. She started a travel agency which allowed her to fulfill her love of world travel. Lucy Huie donated land for the Jim Huie Aquatic Center in Jonesboro and donated resources for Mental Health in memory of her son Henry. All her life, with great integrity and hopefulness, Lucy lived her belief “do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The Clayton State University Lucy Huie Film Studio stands as a tribute to her varied interests and love of our community. Lucy Huie was the daughter of Rev. Earl Cline and Eunice Lovett Cline, and sister to Edgar, John and Pierce; beloved mother of John Patrick Huie, Jim Huie (deceased), Mary Rebecca Huie-Jolly, and Henry Huie (deceased), five great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
