Explore.. Discover... Play Fall is Kamloops’ second summer. It is the best time to be active outdoors. Cooler temperatures and a crisp breeze make it a lot more comfortable than those scorching summer months. Plus, its beautiful out – the trees are gorgeous, the air is dry, the sun shines without being too hot, and days like these are the perfect motivation to get up and get outside! Unfortunately, we tend to have less time during the fall, and with crazy work schedules, demanding classwork that seems to pick up right as the leaves begin to change, and, of course, the shorter days that come with the season, planning your fall activities can be a challenge. But they don’t have to be! Get creative by planning a short walk, run or workout on your lunch break, or before or after work/school. While waiting for your child to finish their activities, take advantage of the surrounding environment. Break up your activity into shorter periods. While it is recommended for adults to accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity, it can be achieved in bouts of 10 minutes. Like the color of leaves in fall, recreation is multi-faceted. It has something for everyone. Programs run inside, outside, are physical and cerebral. The Activity Guide is your tree; don’t be afraid to play with the leaves.

Family The Importance
of Arts
The importance of exposing children to art early in life is often undervalued. But giving young children an appreciation for art encourages exploration, self-expression, logical thinking, self-esteem, imagination, and creativity. Early art experiences also teach children to think openly, create new meaning, be more tolerant of others’ differences, and gives them the courage to take risks.

Early Years Physical literacy
is a journey, not a destination.
Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life. Learning the fundamental movement skills is important so everyone can feel confident to participate in daily activities, sports, vocational jobs such as firefighting, and even grandparents playing with their grandchildren. Look for the Physical Literacy icon throughout our Early Years section for activities that have trained coaches in fundamental movement skills and that incorporate physical literacy into the programs.

Children Taking Risks
in P lay
With the hot weather of summer behind us, fall is the perfect time to play outside. When children are given a chance to participate freely in adventurous play they quickly learn about their own skills and match them to the demands of the environment. Children will ask themselves—how high can I climb?”, or “is this log across the creek strong enough to support me?” They become savvy about themselves and their

environment. Play with measured risk helps children learn how to be safe in their world. Taking measured risks helps children to: • learn about themselves and their own limits • explore their environment • build confidence • develop resiliency • expand their bank of experiences
We often think of play as the opposite learning… But for children play is how they learn and dicover the environment around them. It is the work of childhood.

Youth Parkour
(or parcours)
Originating in France and based on movements developed from military obstacle course training, parkour involves running, climbing, swinging, balancing, jumping, vaulting, rolling and many other energetic ways of moving through an environment. It’s an activity that teaches us to interact with rather than simply observing our environment. It can be practiced alone or with others and is usually—but not exclusively—carried out in urban spaces. Parkour is about seeing the environment in a new way, and imagining the potential for navigating it by movement around, across, through, over and under its features.

Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) - cameras use an internal mirror to direct the actual image seen through the lens to the eyepiece. The mirror is also used in the focusing process and it swings out of the way when the shutter button is pressed. Compact System Cameras (CSC) - have no mirror and electronically send the image from the sensor. The removal of the mirror allows the CSCs to be lighter and thinner. Both have a series of removable lenses and both have the ability to allow the photographer to control many settings such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc.

To stay hydrated, you need about 2 to 3 L (9 to 12 cups) of fluids every day. Depending on the sport or exercise you do, its intensity, the weather, and your individual sweat rate, you could lose anywhere from 0.3 to 2.4 L (about 1¼ to 10 cups) of sweat per hour! This happens in extreme heat but is also a risk in cold-weather sports like hockey and skiing and even in water sports like swimming. ~Dietitians of Canada~

Genealogy Meetings:
Q&A: What do you love about
Tennis? Player: Kim Moshenko Coach: Kelly Hubbard Q: What made you decide to try tennis? I decided to try tennis because I was looking to diversify my workouts, preferably in an outdoor setting, and a friend recommended that I try tennis. Q: How did you hear about the EZ Play Clinic at the Kamloops Tennis Centre? I found out about the EZ Play tennis through an ad in the newspaper. Q: What do you enjoy about playing tennis? I work indoors all day so I love the fact that tennis gets me outside. It’s a fun way to be active and it’s never monotonous as some workouts can be. Everytime I’m on the court there’s a new challenge. Q: How long have you been playing now? I have been playing tennis for just over 3 years. I started with the EZ Play lessons and I was hooked. Kamloops is fortunate to have a terrific club and coach and I was able to enroll in additional group lessons and drills and eventually I became involved with the leagues. Q: Do you have any advice for players thinking about taking up the sport? Don’t hesitate if you’re considering giving it a try but I would recommend lessons if you’ve never played before. The EZPlay lessons taught me the basics in a fun and non intimidating environment and introduced me to a terrific sport!
