Explore.. Discover... Play Spring… a time when nature resumes its beauty. As residents, we seek rejuvenation and discovery. Our seasonal climate, abundance of parks and back country, along with beautiful lakes and beaches provide us with opportunities to discover our natural environment. Whether you choose playing in your backyard; hiking or mountain biking in Kenna Cartwright Park; walking the Rivers Trail; or swimming at Riverside Park, there are many options for you to get a dose of Vitamin “N” – nature. Digging your fingers deep into the rich soil of your garden offers gentle exercise, relieves stress and can improve your mental health. Time spent planting vegetables and flowers and moving about your garden will feed your soul. Here in Kamloops the growing season is long with every reason to grow a vibrant garden. This spring we have programs introducing you to community gardens, growing your own garden, or taking your garden to the next level. “I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden.” Ruth Stout

Lifeguards have changed but the hazards remain the same. Our Riverside Park Lifeguards hope that every person in Kamloops will be River-Safe this summer. Here are some important tips: • Don’t jump from bridges or piers; there may be debris under the surface that you can’t see • Stay within arm’s reach of young children • Don’t drink and drown; save the drinks for later • Rivers have currents, undertows and steep drop offs; even strong swimmers can get into trouble • Wear a Lifejacket when boating or tubing • Swim between the Red & Yellow flags where Lifeguards are on-duty, 1-5, daily July-August 14

Family We want our children to grow up happy and healthy. We register them for classes and activities. We drive them where they need to go. We cheer them on and revel in their energy. But when was the last time you played together?

Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we’ve stopped playing.

Play is not just essential for kids; it can be an important source of relaxation and stimulation for adults as well. Playing with your family members is a fun way to fuel your imagination, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and mental health. Actively playing with your kids will not only improve your own mood and well-being, it will make your kids smarter, better adjusted, and less stressed.

How to play with your child • Make time - remember, time spent playing together is benefiting both of you. • Give your child your undivided attention - it makes your child feel special. • Get down to your child’s level – that may mean getting down on your knees or sitting on the floor. Match your intensity and skill to your child’s level during play. • Let your children take the lead - become part of their game rather than trying to dictate the play. • Don’t force play or try to prolong a game when your child is tired of an activity, it’s time to move on to something new. • Make play age-appropriate and consider safety - help your child find age-appropriate activities and understand any safety rules for play.

Early Years

Explore and Discover through the Five Senses Each child responds differently to sensory experiences. These experiences can be therapeutic, improve motor skills, raise awareness of how the world works, and contribute to language development. Toddlers, Preschoolers and Kindergarteners act a lot like scientists when they learn through their senses. Take time to plan activities with your child and rediscover what is around you.

Sensory P lay. .

Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates your young child’s senses: touch, sound, sight smell, and taste.

TOUCH: Rolling play-doh, finger painting, tearing paper SOUND: Bang kitchen pots, create a chart of sounds that you hear outside SIGHT: Shadow puppets, I Spy or Peak a Boo SMELL: Create a chart of all smelling outside: fresh cut grass, flowers TASTE: Cooking/Baking, exploring different taste (sweet, salty, bitter and sour)

Children

A child at play discovers. A child who discovers will learn. A child who learns will grow with confidence.

Physical literacy and play is essential to childhood discovery, learning and growth! Kids were made to run, jump, throw, kick, hop, skip, roll, balance, and fall! Unstructured play is a great way for your child to discover how to move his or her body through space, allowing them to experience physical literacy. Children who develop the confidence and competence to discover their own creative passions – how they move, how they think, how they feel - have limitless potential. In this new season of spring, let’s encourage our kids to explore, play and discover the skills and abilities that lie within.

P hysical Literacy lives here!

Look for this icon throughout the Activity Guide to find programs that encourage kids to play, discover and master fundamental movement skills!

Youth

Explore the world outside the screen. It’s a digital era and teens seem to know everything about technology and how it works. But these tech skills come from spending hours every day glued to screens and can cause a lot of problems for some youth. It raises their risk of obesity, interferes with social activities and family time, and can even lead to an internet addiction.

Going outside, getting involved with groups or activities and exploring the natural environment has many benefits for youth. Stepping away from the screen means more time for hanging out with and making new friends. Putting down the phone and getting active is linked to more energy, better immune health and getting a good night’s sleep. Unplugging and connecting with nature gives teens the opportunity to experience life instead of watching it. This spring and summer re-discover the world outside the screen.

5 Ways to help your teen unplug and play:

1. Role Model Healthy Habits Be a good role model by limiting your own screen time. 2. Discourage Multitasking Discourage your teen from doing two things at once and discuss how it can actually interfere with productivity. 3. Encourage Physical Activity Going for a walk, playing a game of catch, or even doing some yard work can ensure your teen will get in physical activity. 4. Create Screen-Free Days Every once in a while it can be helpful to have a screen-free day. 5. Schedule Family Activities that Don’t Involve Electronics Whether you play a board game or go for a family hike, make it clear that during your time together there won’t be any electronic use. In 2015, KCKC athletes succesfully reached all the goals set - BC Bantam Championship in U15 and U11 categories. In the U16 and U19 categories, local athletes placed first at BC Provincials, first and second at Western Canada Summer Games, and took medals at Canadian National Championship. Competitive Teams Programs Four different teams based on skills, performance, and age.
