Active for Life
Sport and physical activity play an important role in a child’s healthy growth, development and maturation. Physical activity leads to healthy lifestyle habits, increased social skills, improved mental and cognitive skills and educational success. The City of Kelowna offers programs that support the Canadian Sport for Life model of physical literacy.
Canadian Sport for Life aligned programs will be found in the Children’s 6 & Under and 6 & Up sections. Look for the symbols:
Active Start (0Y-6Y) - At this age, physical activity should always be fun and part of daily life. Active play in a safe environment is the best way to keep children physically and socially active.
FUNdamentals (6Y-9Y boys, 6Y-8Y girls) - Skill development at this age is best achieved through a combination of unstructured play in a safe and challenging environment.
Learning to Train (9Y-12Y boys, 8Y-11Y girls) This is a period of accelerated learning of coordination and fine motor skills. It is a time to develop all fundamental movement skills and learn overall sport skills.
There are no prerequisites for any of the programs. Children can start at any stage.

Lifeguard Training Programs
Bronze Medallion
Bronze Medallion, as our flagship certification, teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness-the four components of water rescue-form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Assistant Lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. There is a 100% attendance policy in place for this course, which is not flexible.
Prerequisites: Candidates must be 13 years of age by the last day of the course or have Bronze Star Certification.
Required Course Material: The Canadian Lifesaving Manual is the required text available for purchase at the time of registration.
26133 Su Jan 8-Feb 12 1:00 PM-5:00 PM $180
Bronze Cross
Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safety supervision.
The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as Assistant Lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. There is a 100% attendance policy in place for this course, which is not flexible.
Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion (need not be current) and 14 years of age is recommended.
Required Course Material: The Canadian Lifesaving Manual is the required text for this course (same text used in Bronze Medallion) and a whistle.
26134 F Jan 20-Feb 24 5:00 PM-9:00 PM $180
National Lifeguard-Pool Option
The National Lifeguard Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principles and practices, and the decision-making processes which will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. Airway Management and Oxygen Administration (AMOA) is included. There is a 100% attendance policy in place for this course, which is not flexible.
Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid with CPR-C (need not be current) from one of the following agencies: Lifesaving Society, Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Ski Patrol or St John Ambulance. Candidates must bring proof of prerequisites on the first day of the course. 15 years of age by the last day of the course.
Required Course Material: The Alert Manual and Lifeguard Tool Kit are required for this course and can be purchased at the time of registration for an additional fee.

National Lifeguard-Pool Precert & Recert
The objective of the NL Precert clinic is to provide candidates an opportunity to review NL skills and knowledge and to provide education on new information before the start of the Recert clinic. Although not a requirement, the BC and Yukon Branch highly recommends that candidates attend an NL Precert to promote professional development and success.
Prerequisites: Proof of NL Pool Option (need not be current). You can recertify your NL at any time. We recommend after 10 years, to take the full course again. Recommended a current CPR-C and NL Pool Option.
