Active for Life Sport and physical activity play an important role in a child’s healthy growth, development and maturation. Physical activity leads to healthy lifestyle habits, increased social skills, improved mental and cognitive skills and educational success. The City of Kelowna offers programs that support the Canadian Sport for Life model of physical literacy.

Canadian Sport for Life aligned programs will be found in the Children’s 6 & Under and 6 & Up sections. Look for the symbols: Active Start (0Y-6Y) - At this age, physical activity should always be fun and part of daily life. Active play in a safe environment is the best way to keep children physically and socially active. FUNdamentals (6Y-9Y boys, 6Y-8Y girls) - Skill development at this age is best achieved through a combination of unstructured play in a safe and challenging environment. Learning to Train (9Y-12Y boys, 8Y-11Y girls) This is a period of accelerated learning of coordination and fine motor skills. It is a time to develop all fundamental movement skills and learn overall sport skills. There are no prerequisites for any of the programs. Children can start at any stage.

RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES

Coupons and Funding

We believe that access to recreation and cultural opportunities are important for the community. Recreation Opportunities Coupons are distributed through agencies in the community for use by individuals and families in financial need to assist them in accessing facilities and programs on a short term basis. Coupons may be used for admission to Parkinson Recreation Centre Aquatic and Fitness Centre, H2O Aquatic + Fitness Centre, Parkinson Recreation Centre fitness and aqua-fit classes, drop-in basketball, public skating and childminding services. Recreation opportunities funding is available for a discount on membership and program registration.

However, we welcome players of all abilities. Participating in wheelchair rugby will teach you how to move a sport wheelchair, catch and throw, and how to take contact from your opponents. Weekly sessions will be in a ’training format’, where participants will engage in aerobic exercise to increase their heart rate, followed by sport-specific drills, and will end off with a scrimmage. Celebrate Heritage Week DIG DEEPER INTO YOUR COMMUNITY'S HERITAGE FROM FEB. 19 - 25

Kelowna’s heritage is a history tied to the land, natural environment and the people who have long understood the richness of this area. Kelowna's heritage is reflected in the buildings, neighbourhoods and landscapes from these earlier eras. To assist in the preservation of these buildings, the City of Kelowna's Heritage Grants program provides financial support to buildings on the Kelowna Heritage Register. These grants assist with a portion of the costs in maintaining and conserving the building's exterior, including foundations. To learn more about how to apply or for more information on best practices for heritage conservation, attend the Information Session on March 7 at Reid Hall in the Benvoulin Heritage Park. The first 2024 grant application deadline is March 15.

Learn more at kelowna.ca/culture or at okheritagesociety.com.

Heritage is the layering of stories that describes the uniqueness of a community's past and present while informing the future. This year's Heritage Week: Layer by Layer, invites you to dig deeper into your community's past and explore the many layers and stories that your unique community holds. Learn more about your heritage from February 19-25, during BC Heritage Week.
