Lancaster ISD Summer Project Information

Lancaster ISD is committed to providing the best education to help our students achieve success. We in the Lancaster Independent School District are striving to keep students reading throughout the summer. Reading for pleasure through summer instills in our children that reading is a pleasurable and life-long activity. All students currently enrolled in Pre-Kintergarten through 11th grade are required to complete a summer reading and math project. This will keep your child reading and will help him/her achieve more in the years to come. All students will be responsible for completing the projects of his/her grade. All projects will be assessed as a major grade the first six weeks of school. Projects are due the first day of school, August 22, 2011.

Civic

Leadership Academy

What is the Lancaster Civic Leadership Academy? • The Lancaster Civic Leadership Academy is a 9 week program that allows city residents to learn more about the functions of city departments and services. Who is eligible to participate? • The Academy is open to all Lancaster City residents 18 years of age or older. How big are Academy classes? • Due to space restrictions, class size is limited to 25 participants. Valid applications that are received after a class is full will be saved until the next Academy. Applicants who have had applications carried over will be contacted prior to applications becoming available and given the chance to enroll. How much does it cost? • The Academy is free to any city resident 18 years of age or older. The only cost to you is two hours a week of your time for nine weeks.

When is the Academy held? • The Academy is held in fall. The 2011 Civic Leadership Academy will begin on September 8, 2011. Sessions last two hours, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and ending at approximately 8:30 p.m.

What is the attendance requirement? • Participants in the academy must attend 7 of the 9 sessions to receive a certificate. We recognize that our participants may experience conflicts over the course of the Academy program. However, the city staff works very hard to make sure that participants get a comprehensive picture of the city. If more than two sessions are missed, this picture is not complete. Extenuating and unexpected circumstances will be taken into account as necessary. What’s in it for me? Why should I give up my time? • Different people have different reasons for participating. While our citizens use city services every day, rarely do they see what happens “behind the scenes” or have access to information regarding why and how things happen. The Academy is a great way to find out more about how the City of Lancaster is working for you. Additionally, citizens who are considering or who may consider applying for an appointment to one of our many boards and commissions will gain insight into our departments and functions. The City of Lancaster encourages all citizens to be engaged in the process of government. The Academy offers Lancaster residents an in depth look into operations and services. 13

Adopt-A-Spot Program The City of Lancaster’s Adopt-A-Spot Program is a joint effort between our residents and city government to keep our rightsof-way and neighborhoods clean and beautiful. This program allows our residents, businesses, clubs and organizations to express their pride and commitment to the community, while providing them with signage recognition for their time and efforts spent beautifying the City of Lancaster. Adopters agree to adopt a section of the city for a minimum of one year. They pick up litter in their section at least once per month using trash bags supplied by the City, which then picks up and disposes of the filled bags after each clean up. The City will provide each adopter with a sign in recognition of the adopted section, with the name of the individual or group displayed. This is an excellent project for school and youth groups, teams, businesses and neighborhood organizations. For more information, contact Parks Superintendent Jodi Griggs at 972-218-2304.
