SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Letter from Mayor Andy Schor Welcome to Lansing Living, your resource for things to do in Lansing! This publication combines the Lansing Parks and Recreation Activities Guide, the Capital Area Recycling and Trash (CART) Greensheet and other important information. In this Fall 2020 issue, you will find a diverse list of activities throughout Lansing for people of all ages, including activities offered by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department (September through January) and others. This publication serves as your guide for all of the exciting things happening in Lansing from swim classes for youth, water exercise classes for adults, dance classes, exercise programs, martial arts classes, sports leagues and more. Try something new and enjoy one of the many programs offered by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department or our many partners offering activities throughout the City this year.
As we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, I appreciate your continued patience and understanding as we make changes to our programming and events. Safety is our top priority and we are taking all of the necessary precautions with guidance from the Ingham County Health Department, state of Michigan and CDC. If any changes are made to our programs and/or events, updates will be provided at lansingmi.gov/lansingliving.
It’s an honor to serve as your Mayor of Lansing and I thank you for your continued support in moving our great city forward.
Andy Schor, Mayor

Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance
By: Valerie Marchand, Communications Manager The City of Lansing has initiated the development of a long-term Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan. Attorney Teresa Bingman, an expert consultant on racial justice and equity, is leading the process and working with City departments, the Mayor’s Diversity and Inclusion Council and community members. To begin this work, Bingman has created the Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance (MRJEA) to examine policies, practices and biases, and to gain a deeper understanding of how to eradicate racism and violence in Lansing through systematic fair treatment of all. MRJEA will contribute to the development of the community-inspired Racial Justice and Equity Plan.
MRJEA’s Structure
Executive Leadership Team • Mayor Schor • Co-Chair Human Relations and Community Services Director Kim Coleman • Co-Chair Lansing Police Department Chief Daryl Green, Ph.D. • Teresa Bingham, Esq.
Steering Committee • Members of Mayor Schor’s Cabinet • Chairs of select City Boards, Authorities and Commissions Advisory Committee • City representatives and residents Advisory Subcommittees (workgroups) • Subject matter experts from across the community
Phase 1: Research & Community Input The Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance (MRJEA) will conduct research by performing internal and external environmental scans and hosting town hall meetings, focus groups and individual meetings. Information and data obtained will be used to inform the revision of community-inspired police Use of Force policies and to develop a community-inspired Racial Justice and Equity Plan.
Phase 2: Revise Use of Force Policies & Develop a Racial Justice and Equity Plan The Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance (MRJEA) will prioritize data and input obtained during Phase 1 to inform the development of community-inspired police Use of Force policies and to develop a community-inspired Racial Justice and Equity Plan.
Phase 3: Long-term Plan The Mayor, along with the Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance (MRJEA) and the Lansing Board of Police Commissioners will share approved police reforms, including Use of Force policies and a Racial Justice and Equity Plan with the community. Throughout the year, education and training will be provided and community input will be received to inform updates.

Walking Wednesdays
By: DeLisa Fountain, Neighborhood Resource Coordinator/ Mayor’s Community Outreach Walking Wednesdays in 2020 have been transformed into a TV show filmed by the Lansing Public Media Center that will air throughout the fall to allow participants to safely socially distance. Although not in a large group this year, Walking Wednesdays will still be a walk through your neighborhood with City officials, City Council members, Lansing Police Officers and others. Stops will be made at special areas of improvement or interest. Residents can participate by watching the show and/ or following along on the walking route to get outside, get active and enjoy the fall weather.
Registration is available year round, please visit lansingneighborhoods.info for registration information.
Civic Organizations had the opportunity to apply to have a Walking Wednesday event in their area through the Neighborhood Grants Program that was open between October 2019 and February 2020.

Walking Wednesday applications for 2021 will be available at the 2020-2021 Neighborhood Programs Launch Webinar on Saturday October 10, 2020. This FREE webinar will give Civic Organizations a complete breakdown and explanation of all Neighborhood Programs as well as explain the application and process for each application. Applications will be available online to registered Civic Organizations. Civic organizations are primarily place based organizations that serve a smaller defined area of the City of Lansing. Organizations, while representing unique interests and participating in various social activities, generally focus their efforts in a specific portion of the community but also represent a broad range of stakeholders. The organization must be registered as a non-profit entity with the State of Michigan, or, if not registered, organized as an entity or association with a written Charter or Articles of Organization (or bylaws) that state its purpose; subject to review by the Department of Neighborhoods and Citizen Engagement.

Lansing’s climate action & sustainability goals
By: Lori Welch, Sustainability Manager The City of Lansing has a history of leadership in implementing environmental initiatives. Lansing published Design Lansing 2012 Comprehensive Plan, a Master Plan which features a chapter on Green Infrastructure and offers additional guidance on sustainability issues. In June 2017, Lansing’s former mayor joined hundreds of American mayors in signing a pledge to adopt and uphold the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement goals in an open letter from the Mayor’s National Climate Action Agenda. Mayor Schor reaffirmed this pledge in 2018. Today, Lansing is involved with Climate Mayor’s, a bipartisan network of U.S. mayors working together to demonstrate leadership on climate change. Mayor Schor’s Lansing Forward statement leans into these concepts further to state that we shall: • Increase emphasis on sustainability and health efforts • Build on the foresight of the combined sewer overflow project
•
Continue refining our recycling, anti-pollution and environmental stewardship efforts. Prioritize fresh water and habitat preservation
These efforts, along with the strong support of City Council members, have converged to bring forth a more comprehensive strategy. This strategy is one that includes data and measurable goals to guide Lansing towards a more sustainable future. Several sustainabilitiy committees will be formed, including: • An internal team of city employees engaged in implementing a climate action plan for municipal operations • A Mayor’s Advisory Committee • A team of local environmental leaders all working with city staff dedicated to solving these issues to achieve these goals Mayor’s Water Challenge For the first time, the City of Lansing, in partnership with the Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL), participated in the 2020 Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water
Conservation to further efforts towards sustainability. The challenge, which has been going on for nine years now, is a national non-profit community service program that invites residents and city personnel to see who can conserve the most amount of natural resources amongst participating cities across the country. Winning cities are eligible to win from hundreds of eco-friendly prizes including a 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid for donation to a local charity of choice. The Wyland Foundation will announce the winning cities at the end of September. While the challenge was important, the sustainable actions encouraged and taken as a result are far greater. Some easy ways to protect and conserve natural resources include: • Washing only full loads of laundry and dishes • Using a refillable bottle or cup • Turning off sprinklers when it rains • Recycling batteries and electronics For additional information on the challenge and its results, visit mywaterpledge.com.

Material recovery facility coming this fall
By: Lori Welch, Sustainability Manager The City of Lansing is working to develop green policies and initiatives that emphasize the proper use of environmental resources with a focus on sustaining these resources for future generations. One of the ways Lansing has been a demonstrated environmental leader is by operating a robust recycling program, and that program is about to get even better. Recycling changes are on the horizon for the City of Lansing, with the opening of a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) this Fall. A MRF is where recyclable materials go to be sorted into commodity types before they are shipped out to various markets to be made into new products. For over a decade, the materials collected for recycling in Lansing have been hauled to MRFs near Detroit or Ann Arbor, because it was the closest option for processing single
stream materials*. Hauling materials is costly and is not the most environmentally sound process. The new facility, owned and operated by Emterra Environmental, will be located on an old, industrial site on S. Pennsylvania in Lansing. The refurbished center will create around 20 new jobs and keep materials local. Emterra is an experienced, reputable company dedicated to recycling in the most environmentally responsible way possible.
*Single-stream recycling is a system in which all materials are placed in a single curbside bin, so residents do not have to separate materials. They are then transported to a MRF where they are sorted and processed.
While most guidelines will stay the same for Lansing residents, there will be some minor changes when the City starts taking materials to the new site. The most notable change is that bulky rigid plastics, such as crates, buckets and baskets will not be accepted. However, paper cups will be added to the recycling stream. To learn which items can be recycled, see the updated recycling guidelines on p.20.
Stay Informed Follow Lansing Public Service on social media for more information on upcoming recycling changes.
Why Recycle? •
Recycling helps conserve important natural resources.
•
Recycling helps create jobs and boosts the economy.
•
Recycling helps reduce the amount of waste in the community and environment.
