SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Letter from Mayor Andy Schor Welcome to Lansing Living, your resource for things to do in Lansing! This publication combines the Lansing Parks and Recreation Activities Guide, the Capital Area Recycling and Trash (CART) Greensheet and other important information. In this Summer 2021 issue, you will find a diverse list of activities throughout Lansing for people of all ages, including activities offered by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department and others. This publication serves as your guide for all of the exciting things happening in Lansing from swimming for youth, water exercise classes for adults, dance classes, exercise programs, martial arts classes, sports leagues and more. Try something new and enjoy one of the many programs offered by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department or our many partners offering activities throughout the City this year.
As we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, I appreciate your continued patience and understanding as we make changes to our programming and events. Safety is our top priority and we are taking all of the necessary precautions with guidance from the Ingham County Health Department, state of Michigan and CDC. If any changes are made to our programs and/or events, updates will be provided at lansingmi.gov/lansingliving.
It’s an honor to serve as your Mayor of Lansing and I thank you for your continued support in moving our great city forward.
Andy Schor, Mayor

During these difficult times if you are facing a hardship, it is important for you to seek assistance. There is help available if you are facing an eviction or shut-off of your utilities because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Please utilize one of the following resources or you can call the Human Relations and Community Services Department at (517) 483-4477 for guidance.
EVICTION ASSISTANCE
For help navigating rental eviction resources in Ingham County, call Holy Cross Services eviction hotline at (517) 657-8145 or evictions@hccsnet.org Current eviction moratoria do not release you from any obligation under your lease. This means you still owe your landlord any rent that becomes due during this period. While your landlord may not file an eviction now, after the emergency passes your landlord can either start or continue your eviction case.
UTILITY SHUT-OFF ASSISTANCE
Michigan Department of Health & Human Services may have temporary heat and utility assistance for eligible low-income families through the State Emergency Relief (SER) program. Apply for State Emergency Relief (SER) from the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services to request help with utility and rent payments. Sustainability in the City
By: Natalie Singer, Communications Coordinator Mid-Michigan Area Welcomes Its First Material Recovery Facility (MRF) A long awaited recycling facility is now open in Lansing. The Material Recovery Facility, or MRF, is a state of the art facility where materials are processed and sorted before getting shipped to various markets and made into new products. The opening of the site means that Lansing will no longer have to send recyclables to Detroit to be processed, saving money, fuel and preventing harmful GHG emissions. Both Lansing and East Lansing will be utilizing the new center. The privately-operated site is owned by Emterra Environmental and is located in a refurbished industrial building on S. Pennsylvania Avenue. There have been several changes to the list of accepted materials and preparation guidelines.
Accepted Materials/Preperation Guidelines •
No bulky rigid plastics (crates, buckets, children’s toys, etc.) • No wrapping paper • No household scrap metal • Yes to paper cups (coffee cups, fast food cups, etc.) • Place shredded paper inside paper bag and write “shred” on the side *Please see page 16 for a complete list of recycling guidelines. Only recycle accepted materials.
Mayor’s Sustainability Commission Climate action and sustainability planning are critical to reducing the City’s carbon footprint, reducing greenhouse gases and achieving goals to reduce waste, manage water resources and work toward carbon neutrality. The Mayor, by Executive Order, has established a Sustainability Commission. The 13 members of the commission will provide expertise and support to the City and will help create awareness of these issues, as well as develop and recommend ongoing sustainability plan performance measures and best practices. The commission began meeting in the Spring of 2021. More information about Lansing’s sustainability program can be found at lansingmi. gov/sustainability.
Safe Streets and Waterways Warm weather is approaching, which means stormwater. One great way to minimize street flooding in your neighborhood is to regularly clean your nearby catch basins.
These drains allow for stormwater to move efficiently through the city and into our rivers while also being equipped to help catch debris and sediment from entering our waterways. It is important to clear the catch basins of their collected debris often to allow for them to function properly.
Tips To Easily Clean Your Catch Basin •
•
•
Safety first! We recommend wearing gloves and using a shovel to remove debris, not your hands. Please use traffic cones if working on a street with traffic. Using your shovel, scoop out leaves, dirt, and trash that have collected near the catch basin grate or drain. Empty the debris into your usual blue trash cart. To prevent debris buildup in the future, remember to sweep around the drain often, especially in the rainy seasons.
Thank you for keeping Lansing’s streets and waterways safe and clean!
Earth Day 2021 celebrate Earth Day 2021 by trying out some of the tips below: • Turn your faucet off when brushing your teeth to conserve water. • Unplug items in your home like lamps, televisions and coffee pots when you’re not using them to save electricity. • Recycle items that are accepted by CART instead of throwing them away in the trash. • Consider using a reusable water bottle instead of buying plastic. Follow the Public Service Department on social media to learn more about how to live more sustainably! lansingmi.gov | SUMMER 2021 | 12

Bike Lockers
By: Natalie Singer, Communications Coordinator In an effort to encourage non-motorized transportation and bicycle safety, the City of Lansing has partnered with CycleSafe—a company that has been specializing in bike parking products since 1980—to purchase and install durable, weather-resistant bike lockers in downtown Lansing. “The grant-funded bike lockers installed around downtown Lansing are a great option for those who want to bike to work or shop and eat local,” said Mayor Andy Schor. “These lockers are placed near the River Trail and bike lanes to provide easy access for those biking the City.” There are 24 bike lockers throughout downtown Lansing. Of those 24 lockers, 16 are open for the general public to use with the remainder being exclusively available to private entities. The lockers are powered by Bluetooth and managed by an app called Movatic. The app can be downloaded on smart phones.
The lockers are located at the following locations: • Ionia Street and Washington Avenue • Lansing City Hall • Davenport University (Washtenaw Street and Grand Avenue) • S. Capitol Parking Ramp (Kalamazoo Street and S. Capitol Avenue) A detailed map that shows all of the locker locations can be accessed in the Movatic app. Instructions on how to use the lockers can be found on the front of each locker door and on the City’s website. The locker rates can be located in the Movatic app. The lockers are available for use MondaySunday and are currently operating from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., however, this is subject to change. Currently, with the exception of the weekend days, the lockers are open for use at times when the City’s maintenance staff is available to assist users when needed.
Additional information, pictures of the lockers and answers to the most frequently asked questions can be found on the City’s website at lansingmi.gov/bikelockers. lansingmi.gov | SUMMER 2021 | 13
