ABCDE LEARNING SITE ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP
WHAT IS AN ABCDE LEARNING SITE?
At the City of Launceston an Asset Based Community Driven Effort (ABCDE) Learning Site enables a community to identify their assets, build connections, and create change in the heart of the community with a focus on ‘what’s strong, not what’s wrong.’
WHO IS INVOLVED?
This is a partnership between the City of Launceston as the Community Connector, the Bank of I.D.E.A.S as the creators of the model and motivated local Community Builders.
The ABCDE Learning Site occurred in Invermay from July 2022December 2023. The Big Picture School is based in Invermay and students were invited to participate in the creation of illustrations for Invermay street banners.
This booklet was created for the students to acknowledge their involvement as a crucial part of the big picture.
THE WORKSHOP
The Launceston Big Picture School is located at Inveresk and helps students engage with learning through innovative learning environments and educators.
Big Picture School students of Invermay were invited to become ‘Community Builders’ for a day and participate in an illustration workshop.
The brief was to create a series of illustrations that celebrate the people, places and events that make Invermay such a vibrant and dynamic part of our city.
Facilitated by local creative agency Clever, students worked collaboratively to create illustrations that were in the spirit of the Launceston Place Brand.

THE LAUNCESTON PLACE BRAND
The Launceston Place Brand celebrates our distinctive story and sparks pride.
The brand empowers anyone with an interest in Launceston’s future to talk about their city and tell their stories: artists, makers, growers, thinkers, do’ers are invited to step into the spotlight and share their tale.
There’s something that lies beneath the surface here that defines us as a city. You may not see it at first, but the moment you step foot here, you feel it. You sense it in the architecture, in the streets, out in nature, between the people — an undercurrent — born from generations of hardwork, curiosity, community, resilience, independence.
OUR CITY IS MADE NOT BY WHAT MEETS THE EYE, BUT BY THE STUFF THAT DOESN'T
The meeting place of three waterways, our beautiful city has been a cultural hub and gastronomic centre for more than two thousand generations.
The first to love this land were the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, who have one of the oldest continuing cultures in the world. Today, around 110,000 people call Launnie home. There are no tourists here – just locals and temporary locals still discovering their true north.
Our city is human scale. A series of green and wild spaces linked by heritage streetscapes and thoughtful adaptions. A real blend of old-world and new, tradition and innovation. We’ve honed our craft
and aren’t scared to experiment either – there’s always something exciting bubbling away.
Our natural and built heritage, food, wine (and spirit) have drawn together a diverse community of makers, artisans, storytellers and nature lovers from all over the world. Culture takes many forms, and we’ve made life’s simple pleasures an art.
We aren’t much into big-city swagger, but you’ll find plenty of charm. Our close-knit community always has time for people, time to connect. Here, the farm gate is the local store, nature is our playground, and the cellar never runs dry.

ILLUSTRATION
Illustrations are a great way to add spirit and playfulness to our city. They can be used to add personality to our designs or where we want to be a little bit more unexpected and offbeat.
Our illustration style is expressive, simple and understated, laid-back and loose. Drawn as single line sketches, sometimes with a pop of colour, they capture the spirit of our city: curious characters navigating unexpected and charming scenes.
