Letter from the Interim

ADMINISTRATOR Welcome to the fitness and health issue of the Illustrated. As we move into winter and the start of a new year, many people will be making the decision to commit to a healthier lifestyle. This issue of the Illustrated highlights the many resources and programs provided by Lee's Summit Parks and Recreation in support of those health-related goals. LSPR provides fitness opportunities at all three of our community centers; Legacy, Harris, and Gamber. We know our community has diverse interests and you will find we offer many options including an indoor track, pickleball, racquetball, basketball, group fitness, indoor aquatics, spinning classes, free weights, selectorized equipment, functional fitness equipment, and cardiovascular equipment. Included in your membership is access to over 100 land and water fitness classes weekly. Classes and times vary by location so be sure to pick up a schedule from each facility. One of the best resources provided by LSPR is our excellent personal training staff and our community wellness program, RevUp. Turn to page 16 to meet our trainers, the superstars of our personal training and RevUp programs. "Did you know" research shows a person is more likely to experience success with their fitness goals if they have a workout partner to hold them accountable and consistent. On page 6 we provide tips on finding a workout partner. One of the most popular New Year resolutions is weight loss and on page 9 we provide some tips to assist with your weight loss goals. Also, our patrons at Legacy Park Community Center can look forward to the addition of new strength equipment in the near future including an addition to the Synergy 360 functional fitness unit we currently have. Finally, I'm excited to share that recently Legacy Park Community Center received the Reader's Choice Award for best fitness center in Lee's Summit by the readers of Lee's Summit Lifestyles Magazine. We are proud, humbled, and very appreciative of the recognition. I am a bit biased, but I think Legacy Park Community Center is a special place that provides programs and amenities for "every age and every season." However, the heart and soul that truly makes Legacy special is our staff and patrons! I encourage you to stop by for a workout, enjoy a cup of coffee, engage in some conversation, and experience the best fitness center in Lee's Summit! Enjoy,

for 6 TIPS FINDING a

WORKOUT

PARTNER by Joe Sherman

We’ve all been there: your alarm goes off to get up

for the gym and you keep hitting snooze until it’s too late. But what if you had made a commitment to someone that you would be there? Would you be less likely to hit that snooze because you didn’t want to let that person down? Having a workout partner can be helpful in many ways including accountability, socialization, increased workout intensity due to competition and increased likelihood to try new exercises. With someone else in the gym with you going through the same struggles you are a bond can be developed that can assist both of you in achieving your health and wellness goals. Not sure how to go about finding a workout partner? Below are 6 tips on how to find a workout partner.

#1 JOIN A FITNESS FACILITY

At a fitness facility, everyone is there for the same reason: exercise. Becoming a regular at the facility will allow you to interact with individuals with similar goals. This is the perfect place to begin your search. LSPR offers three facilities with fitness options: Legacy Park Community Center, Gamber Community Center and Harris Park Community Center.

#2 FIND SOMEONE WITH

SIMILAR INTERESTS If you are a fan of lifting weights, find someone who likes to lift weights. If you are a fan of running, find someone who likes to run. Doing this will make it more likely that you can develop a connection with your newfound partner. Friends and family are the obvious choice for where to look. Search your personal network for people who enjoy similar activities. If that doesn’t work, social media is a great place to find individuals with similar fitness interests as your own.

#3 FIND SOMEONE WITH A

SIMILAR SKILL LEVEL This does not necessarily mean someone at the same fitness level. This is simply someone who is at the same point in their fitness journey. If you are just beginning, try to find someone who is just beginning, as well. If you

6

are more advanced, find someone who is also advanced. Working out with someone who is significantly above or below your skill level can become discouraging or even frustrating and could lead to a derailing of your fitness journey.

#4 FIND SOMEONE WITH A

SIMILAR SCHEDULE The main reason most of us have for not exercising is a lack of time. If you can find an individual who has a schedule that mimics yours, you're more likely to be able to help each other find time that works for exercise.

#5 FIND SOMEONE WILLING

TO TRY NEW EXERCISES Doing the same exercise routine day-in and day-out can become boring. Finding a workout partner who is willing to switch up the routine every few weeks will help both of you break through the plateaus.

#6

FIND SOMEONE RELIABLE If your workout partner constantly cancels on you or goes back on their commitment, are they any real benefit to you? Look for someone you know is dependable and willing to keep their commitment on a regular basis. And make sure to keep your commitment in return! ¢

#1 Write it down.

by Joe Sherman

Keep an accurate food log of everything you put into your mouth. Research says that those who keep food logs tend to lose weight effectively. Some great sites to log your food are www. myfitnesspal.com & www.livestrong.com. Also make note of why you eat. Were you hungry, stressed, bored? Include the time of meal and accurate amounts.

#2 Frontload your calories. If you eat a lighter breakfast and heavier in the evening, try switching it to eat a bigger breakfast and smaller dinner. Think about it – you need more energy to help you get through the day.

#3 Eat slowly.

The brain needs about 20 minutes to receive the signal that you’re full, so eating slowly can cause you to save those calories. Avoid eating in front of the computer or television because distractions can cause you to eat more mindlessly.

#4 Eat your favorite foods.

If you deny yourself to eat what you truly want, you’re more likely to binge. Eat in proper proportions and you’ll be less likely to blow your caloric plan.

#5 Avoid temptation.

Out of sight, out of mind, out of mouth! If you spend a lot of free time in the kitchen, consider relocating to the living room where food is less likely to be available.

#6 Make a list of non-food activities.

When you’re bored, check your to-do list on activities that you can do to take your mind off of food. Food is your fuel, not entertainment, and not a reward for having a stressful day.

#7 Make a realistic eating plan.

If you have a hectic schedule, you’ll need energy to cope with the stress. Don’t immediately set yourself up for failure the first week of your healthy lifestyle. Focus on the small changes and progress towards weight loss.

#8 Schedule exercise appointments.

Make it a priority. If you’re serious about exercising and losing weight, you’re likely to have a regular training plan. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-vigorous intensity exercise a week for exercise (30 minutes, 5 days/week).

#9 Make sleep a priority.

Too little sleep can make you hungrier. Tell yourself that you need to “snooze to lose”.

#10 Think fit and healthy.

Every morning, visualize yourself being leaner and healthier. This will help you start your day with a positive attitude. Positive self talk is so important in healthy lifestyles. Remind yourself of how much better you feel when you eat well and exercise, and avoid those fad diets that sound too good to be true, because they are!

Volunteering: GIVING BACK HAS MANY BENEFITS

W

by Eric Hamp

hat comes to mind when you think of volunteering? Dedicating your time to a noble cause? “Giving back” to your community? Helping others? One usually thinks of the benefit derived by the recipient of the effort, but in fact there are dozens of ways volunteering can help you. In addition to being personally rewarding, volunteering is an excellent way to expand your professional network. By working with others toward a common goal, you form relationships and connections with others who care about the same things you do. These relationships often pay dividends down the road when you are looking for a trusted source to ask for advice, provide support or just brainstorm around an idea. The connections you make with fellow volunteers can become friendships that last far beyond the volunteer opportunity that brought you together. Some years ago, I was talking with a board member in my organization at the time, and he said something that struck me. He said he gained leadership experience through volunteering long before becoming a leader in his own workplace, and the experience he gained through volunteering was a catalyst for his professional ascent. Leadership in a volunteer setting can help develop skills needed to become a leader in your organization. In an article in Forbes Magazine, contributor Richard Pound writes, “The type of leadership at the top is akin to being a leader of volunteers; it is not about carrots and sticks but about persuasion and getting people to grasp and follow your vision.” In a volunteer setting, you do not have compensation and organizational authority to keep your team moving forward, therefore tactful motivation and consensus building is essential to reaching your goals. These skills can be improved through meaningful volunteer leadership and they will serve you well professionally. There are still many additional benefits to volunteering beyond strengthening your professional network and leadership

skills. These include improved interpersonal relationships, self-confidence, self-esteem, problem-solving ability and even improvements in your health. Part of finding the right volunteer opportunity is being honest about what you hope to learn and accomplish. While the altruistic nature of volunteering is more than enough benefit, keep in mind the many positive effects it’s also likely to have on you. ¢ Eric Hamp is NRPA’s Director of Member Relations and Professional Development. Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation is an extraordinary team of employees and volunteers dedicated to providing quality, innovative, and comprehensive recreational services, facilities and parks.

CAPRA Accredited

The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) administers a rigorous program based on self-assessment and peer review using national standards of best practice to better promote the quality of agency services and delivery systems. LSPR was initially accredited in 2003, re-accredited in 2008, and again in 2013. Only five Missouri agencies have achieved this standard of compliance (Chesterfield, Clayton, Kansas City, and Lee's Summit), and 153 nationally.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE In order for LSPR to ensure all residents have an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the many programs offered, a special work program has been developed. The Work Program offers a trade in service hours to the department for financial assistance to participate in programs and activities. If circumstances prevent a patron from participating in the Work Program, a request can be made to utilize funding from the Angel Program, which is made possible through private donations and grants. Call 816-969-1500 or visit any of our locations for more information. INCLUSIVE STATEMENT LSPR provides recreation programs which are open to all residents in the city and seeks and supports participation by all citizens with a variety of interests and abilities. If you or a family member needs accommodations or support to participate in LSPR programs, please contact us during the enrollment process. WHY KEY FOBS? For your convenience! The Key FOB is easy to carry with you, as it slides onto your key ring. In addition, the Key FOB allows LSPR to better track attendance, to know who is using the facilities and saves time when registering for programs or swiping in at facilities. Stop by anytime to pick up your free Key FOB at any of our facilities so you can start carrying your Key to Fun! Replacement FOBs are $1. SAY, “CHEESE!” LSPR staff may take photos of activities. These photos may be used in future issues of Illustrated, on the website, social media pages, brochures, articles, ads, etc. Thanks for saying cheese! Camera Policy: No person shall use a camera, cell phone, or PDA in any changing room or washroom in LSPR facilities. Please report any actions to the contrary. USE OF DRONES IN PARKS The operation of radio-controlled motorized aircraft in a park within LSPR jurisdiction is not permitted without prior approval from the Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department. Permission to use a radio controlled motorized aircraft may be granted on a case by case basis if request demonstrates a specific public need for the radio controlled motorized aircraft usage and does not constitute an infringement on the public’s use of the parks, a danger to patrons within the parks, or violates park user privacy. The operator of the aircraft will be expected to follow all FAA guidelines including contacting the Lee’s Summit airport. LSPR is committed to providing a safe environment for patrons who choose to enjoy the park system.
