letter from the administrator Greetings Lee’s Summit, Here is a snapshot of some of the great projects Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation currently has in progress. RevUP As a nation and state that has a 30% obesity rate, and with the knowledge that this leads to significant health issues including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, we need to all take a little time for ourselves and the ones we care about and “get healthy”. LSPR is ready to be a part of the solution and is pleased to announce the beginning of our initiative to improve community wellness. Of course we have always been engaged in wellness through our leagues, programs and community centers. However this new effort, called RevUP, was specifically developed for this purpose by our staff and health care professionals several years ago. No program of this magnitude can be successful without significant community support and participation. A major part of that support has been found with Lee’s Summit Medical Center and Centerpoint Medical Center. With these partners we are able to engage the staff and other resources necessary to make RevUP available to individuals, groups of friends, churches, businesses and any organization committed to improving health and wellness. It is a simple program that is based on an individual’s needs and capabilities but can have a dramatic impact on personal health and the quality of personal and work life. Our goal is to have over 1,000 participants by the end of this year. Did You Know For the last two years, LSPR staff has been working to educate our employees and community about the benefits of parks and recreation. It has resulted in over 2,200 “Friends of the Parks” and a community that is gaining a better understanding of how parks and recreation positively impact economic activity, community wellness, conservation, personal development, community development and family development. To our credit the program has been adopted by the Missouri Park and Recreation Association to implement across our state in individual communities. The state goal is to have over 60,000 friends of the parks statewide by the end of the year.

redevelopment of this old tired park that has served literally 100’s of thousands of families for over 40 years. Improvements will include walking trails, open field space, adventure playgrounds, zip lines, slides, parking, shelters, restrooms, and a pond with babbling brook.

Meet our newest full time staff Clayton Foster Gamber Center Custodian

Clayton began full time with LSPR in December 2011. Before joining the GC team he worked with Parks Maintenance for over 6 months part-time. He says the GC is a big change in what he is used to doing but he loves it and really enjoys all the interaction with the patrons. Clayton grew up in Harrisonville and worked construction for 27 years. He loves to hunt and fish and cook.

Shawn Moores Park Specialist

So don’t be surprised in the next couple of months to see light poles coming down and ponds being built, playgrounds being installed and a very new concept for the south side of Lea McKeighan being unveiled. Cultural Arts Facility Needs Study One of the many opportunities for service that your Parks and Recreation Board and staff have is working with our City’s Arts Council. In the month of February a milestone study was completed by Webb and Associates that identified our cultural needs as a community. It is an exciting array of facilities and programs to serve Lee’s Summit for the next 20 years. A presentation of this finding was made to our City Council with a very positive outcome to continue the pursuit of these ideas. Special thanks to our volunteer Arts Council members that have given their time so freely for this cause. Land Acquisition We recently completed the acquisition of 50 acres of land in the southwest part of Lee’s Summit. It is a beautiful parcel of land with acres of open space, lush vegetation, and a creek running through it. It is along our Greenway corridor and connects to an existing trail in the Eagle Creek development. This property is also adjacent to Longview Park. There are no development plans at this time except for the trail.

Lea McKeighan Park South There is something special happening to Lea McKeighan Park South. Community members, staff and designers have been working on the deserved 816.969.1500

Shawn joined LSPR in Nov. 2011. He attended Western Iowa Tech Community College where he obtained a degree in Horticulture and Landscaping. He says he loves working for LSPR and working with such good employees and looks forward to all the growth in the future. Shawn and his wife Lacey are the proud parents of a seven month old son named Austin Mitchel. Shawn enjoys being busy, especially if it’s outdoors.

Michael Morris LPCC Custodian

Michael joined the LSPR team in December 2011. He grew up in Craig, MO, attended College of the Ozarks for a year and then joined the Navy. He says that having the opportunity to travel all over the world has showed him that people are basically the same everywhere.

Tony Nichols Aquatics Coordinator

Tony is the newest staff with a start date of March 12. He has 10 years experience in Aquatics Management with the City of Overland Park. Tony studied Economics at Pittsburg State University. This is a big spring for Tony, besides a new job, he will be getting married in May to Felicia who shares his passion of hiking and camping. When not working they love taking weekend backpacking trips or canoe adventures.

Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery Corner Old Wives Tales About Cemeteries and Death

O

ld wives tales and myths are quite prevalent when it concerns death and cemeteries. As a child I’m sure you took at least one of these superstitions to heart when visiting a cemetery. Here is a listing of some of the most common and some you may have never heard before. Some oldies but goodies include... • Hold your breath when you drive past a cemetery or you’ll breathe in the spirit of someone who died and was recently buried. • You shouldn’t step on a grave but if you should have to, walk quickly and hold your breath so that you don’t inhale the spirit of the person in the grave. • If anyone stumbles at a grave it is considered a bad omen. If you fall and touch the ground, you will most likely die by the end of the year. Other myths outline how to predict death... • A bird in the house is a sign of death. If a robin flies into a room through a window, death will shortly follow. • If a clock which has not been working suddenly chimes, there will be a death in the family. You will have bad luck if you do not stop the clock in the room where someone dies. And of course there are tales for avoiding being haunted... • If a woman is buried in black, she will return to haunt the family. • If dead person’s eyes are left open, they will find someone to take with them. • Mirrors in a house with a corpse should be covered or the person who sees himself will die next. • All windows in the home should be opened at the moment of death so that the soul can leave. • The soul of a dying person can’t escape the body and go to heaven if any locks are locked in the house. The timing of death has significance... • A person who dies on Good Friday or at midnight on Christmas Eve will go right to heaven because the gates of heaven are open at that time. Finally, here are some ways to avoid bad luck • Funerals on Friday portend another death in the family during the year. • It’s bad luck to count the cars in a funeral procession. • It’s bad luck to meet a funeral procession head on. If you meet a funeral you must turn back and walk at least 4 steps with the mourners. The Historical Cemetery Corner is written by Bill Rust, Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery Sexton. Visit www.lsparks.net for an interactive map of the cemetery, a great tool for locating grave spaces.
